Breaking: Senate votes to cut off federal funding for ACORN; Update: Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance 7 identified; Update: Brooklyn DA “taking a look”; Update: ACORN disappointed
posted at 6:03 pm on September 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) introduced an amendment to the HUD and Transportation appropriation bill to strip ACORN of all federal funding. A week ago, Johanns wouldn’t have gotten the amendment to the floor. Today, however, after three straight days of BigGovernment.com’s video exposés of ACORN offices in Washington DC, New York City, and Baltimore offering assistance to pimping, tax evasion, and trafficking in underage Salvadorean girls, Johanns not only got his vote — but he got an impressive bipartisan showing. The Senate passed the Johanns amendment 83-7.
At the beginning of the vote, it appeared that Democrats might resist. Initially, a half-dozen Democrats cast votes in opposition to the amendment. A few more cast votes against it as the rest of the Senate voted, but the tide appeared to shift. More and more Democrats signed onto the amendment, and votes started changing. One male voice could be heard in the chamber saying, “I want to change my vote!” Among those who changed their votes: Tom Udall (D-NM), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Herb Kohl (D-WI).
I do not have the official roll call record of the vote yet, but three of the seven Democrats voting against the bill were Dick Durbin (D-IL), Roland Burris (D-IL), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT). I’ll get the rest in a few minutes, but it’s worth repeating what Jim Geraghty said on the Twitter stream: “Who were the seven Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance Program defenders?”
The big question will be whether the House follows suit. Nancy Pelosi may not be inclined to let an amendment come to the floor, but James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles may not be done yet, either. A few more of these videos and even Pelosi will have little choice but to slam the door on ACORN. The big test will be whether the Johanns amendment survives a conference committee. This isn’t over yet.
Update: Thanks to Sean Hackbarth, we have the list of seven nays on the amendment so that the Child-Whoring Pimp Assitance 7 can be publicly identified:
- Dick Durbin (D-IL)
- Roland Burris (D-IL)
- Robert Casey (D-PA)
- Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
- Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
- Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
- Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
So can we assume that Illinois and Vermont are especially sympathetic to child-whoring pimp assistance?
Update (AP): Man, this house of cards is toppling fast:
Meanwhile, Jerry Schmetterer, director of public information for the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, told FOXNews.com that officials will be “taking a look” into Brooklyn’s ACORN office.
“We are going to be taking a look at the situation,” Schmetterer said Monday.
A spokesman for Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said ACORN’S tax status as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization should also be probed.
“We’ve already seen the Census Bureau severe its tie with ACORN,” the spokesman, Kurt Bardella, told FOXNews.com. “Certainly, as an organization being subsidized by taxpayer dollars, their relationship with other government entities should be called into question, and whether or not it’s appropriate for them to receive taxpayer dollars.”
Has The One opened his mouth yet to say anything about his pals being in such dire straits?
Update (Ed): The vote has been posted and can be found here.
Update (AP): So much heart-ache.
“We’re disappointed that the Senate took the rare and politically convenient step of supporting eliminating some federal funding for a single organization, one that has been the target of an historical political assault stemming variously from the Bush White House, Fox News, and other conservative quarters,” said Bertha Lewis, CEO of ACORN, in a statement after the Senate vote. “Fortunately, ACORN derives most of its income from its members and other supporters, so the decision will have little impact on overall operations. Tonight’s vote will burden the families who benefited from ACORN’s important work to improve housing conditions in the United States.”

Nope..not Burris. I know someone who knows one of the two very well(O’Keefe and/or Hannah)and the person who told me was told this past weekend that the best was yet to come. It involves another state that is NOT in the NE (which is where all the visits have been thus far)and this video shows some connection to a Senator.

Exactly. Reminds me of the story Rush tells about the NY Times headline on the Apocalypse.
World to end tomorrow. Women and minorities hardest hit.

Perfect description.

Bought and paid for. The DNC sent some heavy money into PA to assure his win. Given what we know re DNC funding, are you surprised?

I am a faithful Rush listener but I must have missed this one. You have snickering! However I may have to call Rush tomorrow and bring down his 99 percent right all the time status. Don’t you know that women are so yesterday? This is all about the minorities now.

Thank you for the information.
It will be interesting to see how much money the bottom tier members will be willing to chip in once the bountiful teat from Uncle Sam is ripped from their freeloading mouths.
This economy, seen by some state run media outlets as improving, will challenge even the most die hard devotees of the Obama Jones followers who drank the Kool-Aid.
FYI: During Beck’s radio show this AM (and probably during his 5pm TV show) he mentioned that tomorrow will blow your mind. While he does say this often, he did not give as much air time for the latest ACORN sting in Brooklyn. The first two undercover video/audio operations received lots of play, but the third one, not so much. Should be another exciting day for ACORN.
Stay tuned.
VibrioCocci on September 14, 2009 at 11:37 PM
Beck does have a tendency to hype it up, but he did say he has the entire hour blocked tomorrow so I don’t think we are talking about sex trafficking 4.0. Also, Breitbart said it will be devastating and he’s not really one to oversell from my experience. I think people have also said Megyn Kelly said something big is coming too and she isn’t one to overhype. So I’m thinking tomorrow is going to be a big day.

I’ll start popping corn tonight for the show tomorrow!

Like many other New Yorkers, I didn’t vote for the colossally inane Ms. Gillibrand to her former congressional post, and we had absolutely no choice in the matter when our POS Gov. Paterson appointed her. She has zero chance of winning a second term in 1012, but that’s little consolation for most of us who live here now.
It’s truly hell on earth being a red girl in a blue state.
anXdem on September 14, 2009 at 11:47 PM
LOL. That’s for sure not the answer that I will get if I call Casey’s office tomorrow. I’m wondering if I should even bother now.

Gang-of-One,
Thanks for the wise words. I’ve already decided to just forget it. It’s just hard, knowing that for all my years and time spent learning things, that my self-righteous, completely politically ignorant best friend cancels out my vote each election with robotic political idiocy. This is really hard to swallow that my vote means nothing. And it does means nothing, as long as he votes. And I don’t know any way to mend it.

Sad to see a president trying to stay ahead of the “hip” curve.
It’s hip to call West a jackass. But it’s definitely not presidential.
God bless the thug-in-chief.

I called Kanye West worse than that last night on a British website. But the comment didn’t make it past moderation.

Does anyone know if Kay Bailey Hutchison from Texas was out of town, and if that is the reason she was a no vote? It better be, because if Republicans get the word out that she was there and voted this way, she is toast in the upcoming Gubernatorial election. I wasn’t planning on voting for her anyway, because she is running against Rick Perry in the primary and because of her the Republican vote is going to be split and we could lose her Senate seat and the Governor seat to the Dems.
She probably was afraid to vote “yes” against ACORN, because she does not want to offend all those Democrat hispanics and illegal aliens in Texas. She’s a RINO if ever there was one.

Just for grins and giggles, check out the NYTimes websites’ “coverage” of the vote:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/14/senate-says-no-funding-for-acorn/?scp=2&sq=acorn&st=cse
Check out the embedded links. Since they’ve totally ignored the story up to this point, they had to link to google and, get this, the NYPost in order to give a history of the story of the ACORN activities in the Brooklyn office.

WOW! What a victory! 8DD
Burris and Durbin I can get, being from Obama’s state. Burris is already on the outs, but is Durbin insane?! These seven must be so secure in their positions they don’t care what they vote for! Shame about Gillibrand. I had moderate hopes she would be a good one, being fiscally conservative and for gun rights. Guess not. But wow; Schumer, Boxer, Franken, et al voted for this? Or were they abstaining? Amazing!!!

On Watch on September 15, 2009 at 2:43 AM
In nine pages, I’m sure this has been brought up, but just a few of questions to drive home the point:
With these votes, did Durbin and Burris just give the Illinois GOP a massive hammer with which to pulverize whoever the Illinois Dems run in 2010?
Did Gillibrand just dig her own political grave, especially seeing as how recent events are going down in New York specifically?
Seriously, if she can even get the nom at this point, how badly is her GOP challenger going to batter her with THIS vote into early retirement?
In Vermont, they barely bother with to lock up child abusers, particularly pedarists, so, frankly, Col. Sanders and that piece of excriment Leahy don’t surprise me and they’re entrenched in safe seats no matter what lunacy they advocate.
I don’t know about Whitehouse and how it’ll play in RI, but something tells me Casey didn’t do himself any favors with this vote in PA.
Time will tell, I suppose…

NOw things are starting to make sense. Beck on 9/12 had an unusual show. Almost like he was warning us to be prepared for what we will soon know. All these references to something big is a little scary. I wonder how deep the corruption goes? How deep are the roots? And to think, all from one little ACORN in Chicago.

Casey’s phones/faxes will be burning up this morning. PA has far too many gun clingers and Bible huggers for this to go down easily.
ACORN’s mission is to bring down the system by overwhelming it. What if someone, maybe an al Qaeda operative, asked ACORN for a little cooperation? In the news today they’re saying that “Jafar the Pilot,” leader of al Qaeda’s post-9/11 ambitions for another attack on a number of American cities, is on the move again. Is the enemy of our enemy our friend? If asked for a little help, what would ACORN do?

The roaches are not dead. Now that the lights are on, they will simply scurry to a new house.
Rafke (sp) will just open up “Peanut” and will employ the same people to write the same grants, probably in the same offices. The only people that will win are the sign makers.
Unless there is an investigation in the top folks, nothing to see here. We will see that prosecution the day after the Black Panthers go to jail for their voter intimidation… never.
