Breaking: Senate votes to cut off federal funding for ACORN; Update: Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance 7 identified; Update: Brooklyn DA “taking a look”; Update: ACORN disappointed

posted at 6:03 pm on September 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) introduced an amendment to the HUD and Transportation appropriation bill to strip ACORN of all federal funding.  A week ago, Johanns wouldn’t have gotten the amendment to the floor.  Today, however, after three straight days of BigGovernment.com’s video exposés of ACORN offices in Washington DC, New York City, and Baltimore offering assistance to pimping, tax evasion, and trafficking in underage Salvadorean girls, Johanns not only got his vote — but he got an impressive bipartisan showing.  The Senate passed the Johanns amendment 83-7.

At the beginning of the vote, it appeared that Democrats might resist.  Initially, a half-dozen Democrats cast votes in opposition to the amendment.  A few more cast votes against it as the rest of the Senate voted, but the tide appeared to shift.  More and more Democrats signed onto the amendment, and votes started changing.  One male voice could be heard in the chamber saying, “I want to change my vote!”  Among those who changed their votes: Tom Udall (D-NM), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Herb Kohl (D-WI).

I do not have the official roll call record of the vote yet, but three of the seven Democrats voting against the bill were Dick Durbin (D-IL), Roland Burris (D-IL), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).  I’ll get the rest in a few minutes, but it’s worth repeating what Jim Geraghty said on the Twitter stream: “Who were the seven Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance Program defenders?”

The big question will be whether the House follows suit.  Nancy Pelosi may not be inclined to let an amendment come to the floor, but James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles may not be done yet, either.  A few more of these videos and even Pelosi will have little choice but to slam the door on ACORN. The big test will be whether the Johanns amendment survives a conference committee.  This isn’t over yet.

Update: Thanks to Sean Hackbarth, we have the list of seven nays on the amendment so that the Child-Whoring Pimp Assitance 7 can be publicly identified:

  • Dick Durbin (D-IL)
  • Roland Burris (D-IL)
  • Robert Casey (D-PA)
  • Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
  • Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
  • Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
  • Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

So can we assume that Illinois and Vermont are especially sympathetic to child-whoring pimp assistance?

Update (AP): Man, this house of cards is toppling fast:

Meanwhile, Jerry Schmetterer, director of public information for the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, told FOXNews.com that officials will be “taking a look” into Brooklyn’s ACORN office.

“We are going to be taking a look at the situation,” Schmetterer said Monday.

A spokesman for Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said ACORN’S tax status as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization should also be probed.

“We’ve already seen the Census Bureau severe its tie with ACORN,” the spokesman, Kurt Bardella, told FOXNews.com. “Certainly, as an organization being subsidized by taxpayer dollars, their relationship with other government entities should be called into question, and whether or not it’s appropriate for them to receive taxpayer dollars.”

Has The One opened his mouth yet to say anything about his pals being in such dire straits?

Update (Ed): The vote has been posted and can be found here.

Update (AP): So much heart-ache.

“We’re disappointed that the Senate took the rare and politically convenient step of supporting eliminating some federal funding for a single organization, one that has been the target of an historical political assault stemming variously from the Bush White House, Fox News, and other conservative quarters,” said Bertha Lewis, CEO of ACORN, in a statement after the Senate vote. “Fortunately, ACORN derives most of its income from its members and other supporters, so the decision will have little impact on overall operations. Tonight’s vote will burden the families who benefited from ACORN’s important work to improve housing conditions in the United States.”

Hope AND change

The ACORN girls are on the way to intern with Van Joans at Soros sewers for green jobs and then hopefully the Teddy care will be enacted and they train to be proctologists for obama care. They will keep the scope outside in the cold and dip it in sand to save on lubricant. There is a lot of pent up revenge in the left.
When ACORN broke into foreclosed homes and got by with it, i knew they were creating havoc.

The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair housing education and outreach

Oh noes! Wherever shall they live??

Hey, here’s an idea, AP: Maybe if you’re so low income that you have to get “counseling” on where and how to get a mortgage instead of walking in the door of any fair-dealing bank and applying for one, perhaps you don’t need to be buying a house! I can guarantee you if you walked into my bank and didn’t have proof of your income and a credit score above 700 you would be turned away. No amount of leaning from ACORN thugs would change that fact. Not for nothing, my bank is solvent — enough so they aren’t afraid to put their financial statement right on the front page of their website for anyone to see.

Don’t these people get it? These folks they purport to be helping are being used and abused by the likes of ACORN, Freddie and Fannie, and other proponents of CRA. These folks get them into a house they can’t afford, they get whatever it is they’re getting skimming off the top, and basically they end up enslaving their charges to a lifetime of debt they have no hope of paying off.

I have two reactions:

1. Great news in the Senate! Congratulations to O’Keefe and Giles for forcing even about 40 Democrats to vote for cutting funding to ACORN. Two weeks ago, who could have foreseen that?

2. I live in Illinois. Both of my senators voted to retain support for child sex slavery. Can any other state match our level of filth and corruption? I say no.

Ed and Allahpundit, many thanks for staying on top of this story.

Next stop for these clowns: Planned Parenthood.

I’d like to see O’Keefe do the same thing to the mainstream media. They need exposed for the fraud they are as well!
A young man and a young woman with zero funds, a cheap camera, cheap costumes just did more investigative work than the entire mainstream media conglomerates have done in years. With all mainstream media boasts of,, massive budgets, big names, international name recognition and an entire world wide network,,,, they have been outdone by average citizens with cameras and a passion for the exposing the truth!!

The mainstream media could not find what was right in front of them. They are not even looking. It is no longer their job. It is no longer what they do!

cane_loader on September 14, 2009 at 10:09 PM

Don’t know if anybody has said it here, yet, but they are coming out with ANOTHER undercover video of the “pimp and the prostitute” going into ANOTHER ACORN office, tomorrow!

Ohhh, great point!

I think it has something to do with that NYT spiked story thing, election fraud and heavy duty problems for lots and lots of people.

ted c on September 14, 2009 at 10:04 PM

Please correct me if I’m wrong:

But doesn’t the basic law of logic indicate one of two things, both damning?:

1. Each office independently was schooled enough in corruption that they knew how to instruct neophytes in how to establish a brothel

OR

2. The word flew up the ACORN grapevine fast enough that these two were coming around, and to “get the story straight” so that everyone would be protected…

You know, suspects do that while murmuring in back of the police cruiser…..

cane_loader on September 14, 2009 at 10:13 PM

Heh! I didn’t know they were voting on it and I wrote my congressmen and senator today requesting that ACORN be investigated and funding cut off. Awesome!

AP News. US Senate cuts funds to ACORN. Low Income people hit hardest

The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair housing education and outreach

William Amos on September 14, 2009 at 6:57 PM

I just read the AP News link. Apologies if someone else has already posted this (too many comments to read).

AP News says nothing about the smuggling of underage girls into America for child slavery and prostitution!

“The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on house-buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.”

Sorry, Sparky, can’t help but feel you’re a better friend-to-your-friend. I don’t recall you calling him any names when you gave him the info, but boy, oh boy did you get vitrial back!
That’s what’s typical and sad. You tried to make very reasoned points and your “friend” lashed out, not against the substance, but based on dem talking points.
Keep fighting Pats…They are doin’ their dangdest to turn up the heat.
Repeat, repeat, repeat the Lord’s Prayer!

I want my $498.00 tax back that I stupidly paid to the state to register the used 1976 truck that I just bought because I didn’t lie on the bill of sale.

The ACORN people were negligent in not educating me in how to avoid it.

*Snap*

That’s it – I’m SUING those sons of bitches!!!

Hey Senators: What took you SO long?

TN Mom on September 14, 2009 at 10:16 PM

The connections between ACORN and the Obama campaign would have violated federal election law. McCain-Feingold specifically prohibits coordination between campaigns and outside groups during an election. In Obama’s case, the coordination would have been a little strange, anyway, as Obama was raising tons of cash and organizing well on his own. ACORN certainly helped, but explicitly tying his campaign to an organization under investigation for fraud in several states could have done more damage than it was worth.
