Breaking: Major terror bust in New York City? Update: Ideology “aligned with Al Qaeda”; Update: WMD concerns

posted at 4:21 pm on September 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

Maybe it’s because I live so close to where it’s going down, but the early details on this one make me uneasy.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne confirmed that searches were conducted in the borough of Queens by agents of a joint terrorism task force. He would not discuss the matter further…

Two U.S. intelligence officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly, said the target of any purported attack — or who would carry it out — remained unclear.

Authorities have not found any weapons ready for use — such as a bomb — that would indicate an attack was imminent, they said. Nevertheless, one of the officials called the threat very real and emphasized the urgency of the threat.

They’ve just started briefing “a series of senior lawmakers in Congress.” Is that normal for U.S. intel in an average terror bust — to grab hold of the congressional leadership and get them up to speed ASAP?

Some mighty interesting timing to this, too. Stand by for updates.

Update: One possibility that occurs to me: Was this a plot against Obama? He was in downtown Manhattan today for his speech at Federal Hall and lunch with Bill Clinton.

Update: A few new details from CBS:

WCBS TV’s John Slattery reports the federal search warrant spelled out all manner of possible bomb-making components, including powders, gels, TNT, and fuses…

Building resident Assad Niazi told WCBS, “I don’t know [the other residents]. They are roommates – they go to work in the morning, and at night they come back.”

Update: Ace points to this ABC News video from Friday on counterterrorism in NYC noting that the cops are paying close attention to Iranian-backed Hezbollah agents these days. No surprise, either: If Israel attacks Iran, U.S. intel will expect instant reprisal attacks here from Iranian proxies and will have to move quickly to roll them up. Doesn’t mean that’s related to today’s bust but it’s worth noting.

Update: Schumer tells the AP that the plot was unrelated to Obama’s visit and that nothing was “imminent.” Good luck distinguishing that from the law enforcement claim that the threat was “urgent.”

Update: Not sure if “aligned with Al Qaeda” means jihadist generally or linked to AQ specifically, but here you go:

A senior law enforcement official said authorities had not detected a specific plot or target of any planned attack, but had uncovered a small group of people who espoused a militant ideology aligned with Al Qaeda and whose activities had aroused enough suspicion to obtain warrants for the searches and arrests, which began late Sunday night.

The official said authorities had only a hazy view of the group, its operations and goals, but decided to act fearing that undercover surveillance had failed to detect plans that might be developing.

Update: More bits and pieces. Did they jump too soon?

FBI agents have been monitoring a man from the western part of the U.S. who had recently driven to New York, federal sources said. The man met with several people in Queens, and the activities aroused enough suspicion to obtain warrants for the searches, the sources said.

The man the FBI had been watching has since flown home and is not in custody, the sources said.

Update: No wonder they were briefing congressional leaders.

[A senior official] said some counterterrorism officials were concerned that the individual at the center of the investigation may have had access to, or an interest in acquiring, materials that could be used for a chemical, biological or radiological device. One aspect of the probe involves whether the person had some contact or connections with suspicious individuals overseas, the official said. He stressed that the investigation was still at its earliest stages.

Law-enforcement officials are aware of the person’s whereabouts, but the individual isn’t in custody, according to the senior official. Items taken in the searches were still being processed and sorted through early Monday afternoon, the official said.

These people need lawyers…

Call the ACLU!

Khun Joe on September 14, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Do you think this has anything to do with trying to improve Obama’s poll numbers?
immigrantchick on September 14, 2009 at 8:35 PM

Absolutely. I also think that calling Dowd for her obsession with racism, and calling Kenye a “jackass” are all efforts to rack up his poll numbers.

He can get away with it with the lefturds – they’ll give him a free pass on anything – even with insulting them.

Must be feeling the heat.

ACORN STORY TOMORROW.

I’m with blatantblue on this one. This has the potential to be serious. This is not about Obama. Get a grip.

blatantblue on September 14, 2009 at 9:35 PM

The important thing to remember here, of course, is that we do not do anything to make any suspects uncomfortable and that we are extremely careful in protecting their constitutional rights. Some suggestions;

1) Ask them if they need a nap, or if they are getting enough sleep. Don’t bug them with a lot of questions over a long period of time, like over ten minutes.

2) Make sure they are eating right and taking vitamins. Ask them if they have any special physical or religious dietary needs.

3) Don’t make them feel like they HAVE to answer any questions. They have the right to remain silent.

4) If the CIA insists on doing any aggressive interogation on somebody, pick up Bill Maher. I would suggest they do something to his testicles, but he probably doesn’t have any.

This Obama thing is really a needed education for the blind followers of a person in power. The MSM has been the teacher for decades that edited video, photos and script for years. Now with cell phones that can take a picture and send it to the internet without the editors of MSM has caused a melt down in the news business or should I say an absence of power in the MSM. The crumbling of the news media is so sweet that we as a nation can see something that is not edited to their liking that basks in the truth.

blatantblue on September 14, 2009 at 9:35 PM

I’m with you on this one – can’t possibly be politics.
Thinking the current administration capable of this is akin to thinking the prior administration could have been complicit in the September 11th attacks.

I have a very low opinion of the current powers that be in Washington, but no way could they do something this low.

massrighty on September 14, 2009 at 9:47 PM

I’m with you [blatantblue] on this one – can’t possibly be politics.

massrighty on September 14, 2009 at 9:47 PM

I wouldn’t say that it can’t possibly be politics, but I doubt it is, since catching jihadis in the act (just the existence of jihadis, actually) is not something that goes with the narrative this administration is trying to force on everyone.

However, this administration does not have the security interests of the US in mind and is perfectly happy to harm us just to score political points – as the CIA witchhunt, mirandizing detainees on foreign soil, publishing security secrets, apologizing to the muslim world for us causing them to be lunatics (which just whets their appetite) …

The idea that this administration doesn’t take US security seriously is clearly the case, and that The Precedent has been working to see the US harmed is without a doubt, though I don’t think that politics is part of this particular set of arrests. We’ll find out if they interrogate these jihadis the right way or if they let them go.

progressoverpeace on September 14, 2009 at 10:00 PM

This is not some ginned up threat. Its there and we have the vigilance of our security services to thank for our safety. A job I remind everyone that Obama has made almost impossible.

If we are hit again, the first person that will be held responsible for spilled American blood will be Obama. There will be NO rallying around Obama if that happens. Count on it.

progressoverpeace on September 14, 2009 at 10:00 PM

I think you’re right, up to a point.
Clearly they don’t have the US best interests at heart. But, when the rubber truly meets the road, I just can’t go to where they’d ignore a real threat in some way, for any reason.

It’s way too cynical to think that they’d do anything other than play this one straight.

It’s one thing to speechify about changes in policy, etc.

But, confronted by the real thing, I think they’ll play it right.

massrighty on September 14, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Perhaps if Obama went on one more world apology tour, people wouldn’t hate us so much and all these problems would go away.

Star20 on September 14, 2009 at 10:21 PM

It’s way too cynical to think that they’d do anything other than play this one straight.

massrighty on September 14, 2009 at 10:15 PM

It’s the people at the lower levels who are playing it straight. The policy makers at the top have not done anything to help US interests or US security and The Precedent, himself, has been clearly trying to stifle our ability to defend ourselves.

You cannot be too cynical with The Precedent, particularly, and the Washington junta. They support Zelaya’s marxist coup attempt. That tells you all you really need to know about them and what they really want. Their interests are clearly not the US’ interests and they have all shown how far they are willing to go to harm the US to get their way.

It’s okay. The Washington junta will probably drive us to monetary armageddon before the terrorists get another large attack off – and monetary armageddon is going to be much worse.

Has the white house raise the terror alert to Frowny Face yet?

TN Mom on September 14, 2009 at 10:26 PM

“There was nothing imminent, and they are very good now at tracking potentially dangerous actions and this was preventive,” said Charles Schumer, a U.S. Senator from New York who was among those briefed by FBI officials.”

I HOPE to God this doesn’t mean we were violating anyones right to privacy and listening in on phone calls!

elduende on September 14, 2009 at 10:08 PM

Everyone needs to read that again and let it soak in. Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of their ilk have made it a career since 2001 to build a hatered of America’s efforts to protect herself. The next attack may as well have been done by them personally. You want to see riots in the streets, watch that unfold if we get hit again.

And by the way, who would blame the CIA for calling in sick about now.

Ideology “aligned with Al Qaeda”; Obama

Western_Civ on September 14, 2009 at 10:34 PM

We must be careful here folks! Eric Holder should provide some of the 150 new civil rights lawyers to these folks along with proper health care! Obama must show an open hand to these folks so he can get cooperation since the CIA can’t be trusted to interrogate them! Rev. Wright and Van Jones may be of assistance also! They can convince them that this administration is on their side and that they will take the country without firing a shot! Obama will talk us into surrender! Problem solved! Sing Kumbai and praise muslims! No terrorist threat here!

Marco on September 14, 2009 at 10:54 PM

But, they’re not terrorists anymore, are they? They’re “man caused disaster causers” or something . . .?

starboardhelm on September 14, 2009 at 11:08 PM

There is no such thing as terrorism, until ofcourse Glenn Beck is coming at this regime with something and they want the attention diverted away from Beck . I’m surprised these raids have not been demonised by Pelosi-Reid-Holder yet.

macncheez on September 14, 2009 at 11:46 PM

I ditched the Donks because they were unable to separate partisan politics from issues of national security. I won’t have any trouble saying sayonara to the GOP if they pull the same bullshit.

Jeez Louise, I can’t take another 4 years of normally rational people coming unhinged.

Maybe Pelosi and Reid will stop playing this game and start protecting the country.
The “blues” are finally waking up and seeing that terrorism is a real threat.

right2bright on September 15, 2009 at 1:58 AM

My entire paridigm has been altered since Obama took office and I tend to believe the worse in everything related to this man. Perhaps it was his arrogant attitude in demanding infanticide that exposed his soul, but I look at things like this raid as a ordered distraction from the failures he is suffering–ACORN, Obamacare, March on Washington etc.
Why if it keeps up, we may even see a few cowardly republicans crawling out from under their hiding places and start asking questions. one would think that Glen Beck is doing their job for them, that they might not take risk to save the nation, and save their cushy jobs.

Don L on September 15, 2009 at 5:03 AM

I think this information passes through the President’s hands, yes. But, just as Bush wasn’t “responsible” for 9/11 directly, so this is not Obama’s fault or to his credit.

Where we give credit is the degree of latitude the current admin gives our intelligence agencies, military and law enforcement. There was need for expansion and revision prior to 9/11 which, sadly, was not done until after. Now, the current administration seems bent on reversing much that was beneficial to us while criminalizing the intelligence community. So, yes, if something does happen or if we are hamstrung by new legal restraint, it will be O’s fault.

Now, however, it’s good to know we still have strong intelligence and can stop them, hopefully.

So; What’s with the use of the mug of the man-child for this article? Why isn’t this photo used in a more appropriate place, such as every ACORN article?

right2bright on September 15, 2009 at 1:58 AM

What? Since when has blatant not gotten it? Despite his name, he isn’t a “blue”.

I’ll admit that I’m still expecting something, especially in the first year of the new president’s term. It happened with Clinton and then Bush. So even if this threat isn’t what it seems to be, it doesn’t sound like a ploy by Obama to me. If anything, news of terrorism isn’t helpful to his agenda anyway.

How’s that “smart power” working for us theses days?

Hard to believe that those “misunderstood” people haven’t been swayed into loving Obama’s new apologetic nation.

katiejane on September 15, 2009 at 9:10 AM

No one is saying they created the story. It was there all along and they knew about them and were watching, but just as missles were fired into camel tents and aspirin factories were blown apart the day Monica was to speak and possibly destroy a presidency, it became convenient to act at a certain momentin time for distraction. That’s all I see as a possiblility.

These are people that slaughter innocent babies completely outside the womb – what else is below them that they would’t do, is the only question remaining in my mind.

Yep, sadly reminds me of a time when Bin Laden was available for capture, but another Donkey POTUS was in orafice and didn’t want to be bothered. This current terrorist might soon be caught and offered up, but the One will not be bothered because there are more pressing domestic matters.

From what I hear…
there’s nothing to worry about while Obama’s in, the terrorists are coming at going freely on visas, gathering intel, setting up cells, networks throughout US and SAmerica. They don’t want to mess up this access. The Arab govts. are digging in their heels and will be able to deliver on the threats they perceive they’ll need later.

I predict…
We all wake up one morning to find out Iran is severly crippled. Obama will faithfully condemn despite having advance notice. The Saudis will allow the Israeli overflights since they are #1 on the Shia target list.
