Breaking: Major terror bust in New York City? Update: Ideology “aligned with Al Qaeda”; Update: WMD concerns

posted at 4:21 pm on September 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

Maybe it’s because I live so close to where it’s going down, but the early details on this one make me uneasy.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne confirmed that searches were conducted in the borough of Queens by agents of a joint terrorism task force. He would not discuss the matter further…

Two U.S. intelligence officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly, said the target of any purported attack — or who would carry it out — remained unclear.

Authorities have not found any weapons ready for use — such as a bomb — that would indicate an attack was imminent, they said. Nevertheless, one of the officials called the threat very real and emphasized the urgency of the threat.

They’ve just started briefing “a series of senior lawmakers in Congress.” Is that normal for U.S. intel in an average terror bust — to grab hold of the congressional leadership and get them up to speed ASAP?

Some mighty interesting timing to this, too. Stand by for updates.

Update: One possibility that occurs to me: Was this a plot against Obama? He was in downtown Manhattan today for his speech at Federal Hall and lunch with Bill Clinton.

Update: A few new details from CBS:

WCBS TV’s John Slattery reports the federal search warrant spelled out all manner of possible bomb-making components, including powders, gels, TNT, and fuses…

Building resident Assad Niazi told WCBS, “I don’t know [the other residents]. They are roommates – they go to work in the morning, and at night they come back.”

Update: Ace points to this ABC News video from Friday on counterterrorism in NYC noting that the cops are paying close attention to Iranian-backed Hezbollah agents these days. No surprise, either: If Israel attacks Iran, U.S. intel will expect instant reprisal attacks here from Iranian proxies and will have to move quickly to roll them up. Doesn’t mean that’s related to today’s bust but it’s worth noting.

Update: Schumer tells the AP that the plot was unrelated to Obama’s visit and that nothing was “imminent.” Good luck distinguishing that from the law enforcement claim that the threat was “urgent.”

Update: Not sure if “aligned with Al Qaeda” means jihadist generally or linked to AQ specifically, but here you go:

A senior law enforcement official said authorities had not detected a specific plot or target of any planned attack, but had uncovered a small group of people who espoused a militant ideology aligned with Al Qaeda and whose activities had aroused enough suspicion to obtain warrants for the searches and arrests, which began late Sunday night.

The official said authorities had only a hazy view of the group, its operations and goals, but decided to act fearing that undercover surveillance had failed to detect plans that might be developing.

Update: More bits and pieces. Did they jump too soon?

FBI agents have been monitoring a man from the western part of the U.S. who had recently driven to New York, federal sources said. The man met with several people in Queens, and the activities aroused enough suspicion to obtain warrants for the searches, the sources said.

The man the FBI had been watching has since flown home and is not in custody, the sources said.

Update: No wonder they were briefing congressional leaders.

[A senior official] said some counterterrorism officials were concerned that the individual at the center of the investigation may have had access to, or an interest in acquiring, materials that could be used for a chemical, biological or radiological device. One aspect of the probe involves whether the person had some contact or connections with suspicious individuals overseas, the official said. He stressed that the investigation was still at its earliest stages.

Law-enforcement officials are aware of the person’s whereabouts, but the individual isn’t in custody, according to the senior official. Items taken in the searches were still being processed and sorted through early Monday afternoon, the official said.

Huh? Liberals love terrorists. Everyone knows it. Whether that applies TO YOU is something else, but it is true of liberals.

The rest of your post was nothing but a wacky distraction to not have to address the fact that DHS called conservatives and Constitutionalists “terrorists” but warned their people not to use that term for jihadis and the people who support the jihad. I guess there’s no point in you trying to slink the liberals out of what they say and what everyone knows they are.

And you don’t like to update us on the liberals’ CIA witch hunt. Why not? Are you not proud of the liberals foaming at the mouth to decimate our spy and interrogation capabilities? Or, are you against the special prosecutor looking into the awful crimes of getting hardened jihadis to spill the info they have?

I think I’ll just pray we’re actually on top of this.

AnninCA on September 14, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Hmmmm….now I thought once THE ONE was elected and completed his apology tour all would be right in the world and no one would hate us anymore, so why the need to pray AnninCA? I mean after all according to the left all we had to do was apologize to the world for all the mean and terrible things we’ve done, then we can all hold hands and sing koom-baya…!

Well praying is good and all AnninCA but the fact remains this administration being run by liberal dems is taking us back to a pre-9-11 mentality when it comes to doing what is necessary and prudent to protecting our nation and its citizens and this administration doing so will cost us dearly, it’s only a matter of time because you see AnninCA fascist Islam is much like the Terminator, it cannot be negotiated with, it cannot be appeased, it does not feel pity or remorse, it doesn’t give a rats azz about the rule of law or human rights, fascist Islam only wants all those THEY BELIEVE TO BE INFIDELS (that would be you, me and the entire western world) to be DEAD!!!

Just as the verse from the Zep song When the Levee Breaks says “crying won’t help you, prayin’ won’t do you no good” praying will help about as much as being in denial of what fascist Islam is all about, something the left is stillin denial about!

As long as the left keeps denying the truth and continues to mischaracterize the necessary tools that are needed to continue to keep us safe; such as the Patriot Act, GITMO, and/or enhanced interrogation techniques as being “unconstitutional” and “evil” and “war crimes” we will not be safe like we were under Bush and our being hit again is inevitable!

If you really want to help keep us safe from fascist Islam perhaps you can start by getting you and your liberal lefty buddies to not distract and punish (e.g., the “torture” witch hunt against the CIA) those that are working hard to protect you and me from the task at hand with all of your lefty “war crimes” and “torture” and “unconstitutional” political/ideological BS memes so the adults can to continue to utilize the Patriot Act and enhanced interrogation to protect the US and its people from the fascist Islam animals that could give a rats azz about the rule of law or human rights, and especially could care less about you or me!

One question for you AnninCA, is it now ok support the Patriot Act and enhanced interrogation techniques, Gitmo, et al now that THE ONE is POTUS and not Bush?

Just curious…

Back about 8 years ago I e-mailed Bill Keller of the NY Fishwrap with a few questions, noting that I had as a former NYC resident been a daily reade rof the paper since the mid 1960s.

To my surprise, he e-mailed me back, and graciously answered all of my questions except for 1.

The one he refused to answer?

“For decades, your paper used the word Terrorist regularly on the front page to describe murderous acts by the bad folks who want to hurt us. Suddenly, in the mid 1990s, the T word disappeared from your paper. Why did you stop calling them that?”.

You are an idiot. The DHS report —

a companion piece to a similar report about left wing domestic terrorists

– did not in any way lump all right wiongers into a terrorist boat. It merely said that there are some wackos out there, who might be enraged enough by immigrants, black presidents and unfounded fears of gun control to do something stupid. And there are. Also, it was commissioned by the Bush Administration, hardly a liberal bastion.

And you’re in favor of secret aganecies being unaccountable for possible crimes and violations? You think Obama’s agencies should be above the law, too?

When I heard the news about the raid, this article came to mind. It is worth the read:

Is another 9/11 set to unfold?

By Lee Benson

Deseret News
Published: Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 9:32 p.m. MDT

Earlier this year, quite by happenstance, I read a book written by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter James B. Stewart.

“Heart of a Soldier” tells the story of two men who, well before it happened, foretold not only of the terrorist attack of 9/11 but also the 1993 bombing in the World Trade Center parking garage that preceded it.

One of the men, Rick Rescorla, was chief of security for Morgan Stanley with an office in the World Trade Center. He died on 9/11, but not before he shepherded all but six of Morgan Stanley’s 2,700 employees to safety because of a well-prepared and well-executed evacuation plan. He’d have made it out, too, had he not gone back in the building looking for those six.

The other man, Daniel J. Hill, is still alive.

With another Sept. 11 approaching I wanted to talk to The Man Who Predicted 9/11.

Although the primary focus in Stewart’s book is on Rescorla — a bona fide hero for his actions on 9/11 — I found Hill to be an even more fascinating character.

It was Hill who converted to Islam as a young U.S. Army paratrooper stationed in Beirut in 1958. It was Hill who learned fluent Arabic. It was Hill who joined the Mujahedeen Freedom Fighters in Afghanistan and fought the Soviet invasion there in the 1980s. It was Hill who personally met Osama bin Laden. It was Hill who used information from Islamic extremists to warn Rescorla that terrorists would use the underground parking garage for a car bomb attack on the World Trade Center. It was Hill who asked the U.S. government to assist him in an assassination attempt on bin Laden in 1998 (the request was rejected). And it was Hill who warned the FBI just weeks before Sept. 11, 2001, that his Mideast contacts told him “something big” was about to happen in the United States, in New York, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia — maybe all three.

Through the Internet I managed to contact Hill at his home in Florida. He’s 71 now. I asked him if his reputation as a terrorism prognosticator without parallel has changed his life much.

“Oh, that blew over pretty fast,” he said. “Most of the people even in my hometown don’t know any of that stuff.”

He didn’t want to talk about the past. He wanted to talk about the future.

The very near future.

The man who predicted 9/11 is worried that its sequel is imminent.

“Muslims that I talk to say things like, ‘America thinks they’re safe now. They’ve forgotten about 9/11. But watch, Daniel. Stay near your TV. It’s going to be bigger than 9/11,’ ” he said.

Hill said the next terrorist attack will involve suitcase nuclear bombs that will be detonated in small, low-flying two-seater private airplanes manned by men hanging onto the belief that, like the 9/11 hijackers, they are about to die as martyrs and enter paradise.

He is not alone in suggesting such a scenario. A 2007 book, “The Day of Islam,” spells out the details, as do any number of Internet sites about a plot called “American Hiroshima.”

The nukes, he said, will be detonated over New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

I asked Hill, “Why now?”

“Eight years from 1993 to 2001, eight years from that 9/11 to this 9/11,” he said. “Symbolism. They’re big on symbolism.”

“Ramadan started two weeks ago Saturday,” he said, referring to the Muslim holy month of fasting. “It always hits around Ramadan.”

Eight years ago, Hill predicted the attack would come on Oct. 16 — almost in the middle of that year’s Ramadan (the timing of Ramadan varies from year to year). He was about a month off.

“I don’t know the second, hour or day. I just know they have the means, will, motivation and desire to do it,” he said, noting that it’s believed that years ago the suitcase nukes, acquired from former USSR operatives, were smuggled into America across the Mexican border.

Hill said he has warned the FBI, the CIA and others in government. For the past two years, he’s sent out proposals for a book on the subject. All he’s gotten back are rejections.

“To most people, I am a deviant personality,” he said.

But there’s no arguing his credentials.

“I’m a Muslim,” he says. “I’m a special ops expert, I’m a terrorist and I’ve lived among Muslims. I fought the Russians with the same guys we’re now fighting in Afghanistan. I met Osama. I volunteered to assassinate him. I know (the enemy) so well because I’ve worked, slept and prayed alongside them for years. I’ve become one of them. I know their nature, I know their culture, I know how they think. I can quote the Koran like a Southern Baptist minister can quote the New Testament. I know these are people who do not tire, who do not quit. There are odds this won’t happen, but they aren’t big odds.”

“I hope you’re wrong,” I told him.

“Yeah. I hope so, too,” he said.

But B*tch never tells us what Chimpy could have done to prevent those attacks.

I’m curious where you live. Did you have to get your children out of school while your city was being evacuated? COuld you see the smoke rising from the Pentagon? Do you drive past the sensors that are supposed to pick up radiation from a dirty bomb as it enters the city, and wonder how you’ll get hold of your kids if one goes off?

Or do live in some nice suburban community in a quiet county in a red state, where all this terror stuff is abstraction that lets you channel your inner Bircher and rage about the commies?

If this country ever collapses, it will be because of people like you.

I’m not complaining. I like where I live. But terrorism isn’t an abstraction to me.

Dumbass. I was in Boston on 9/11. You know the place where 2/4 9/11 flights originated. I was friends with someone whose cousin was on one of the planes. I personally flew on one the exact flights BOS-LAX 10-12 times that year as I was working on a project in SoCal. I very well could have been on that flight if the project had gone on a little bit longer. One of my co-workers was at the WTC on 9/11. Nobody knew where he was for the whole morning and we all assumed the worst. My parents couldn’t get a hold of me initially since I was in a meeting and had my cell phone turned off. They never really know where I am any given day since I travel as often as I do. All they knew was that I fly a lot and from Boston and sometimes I go to NY and sometimes I go to California and they too assumed the worst, because that’s what parents do. And when my mom finally did get a hold of me she was crying.

So go f**k yourself and your holier than thou bullshit.

It certainly tried its best. And to compare their analysis of Constitutionalists, who have the law on their side, with morons like ELF who run around blowing things up is crazy. Lefties love terrorism.

It merely said that there are some wackos out there, who might be enraged enough by immigrants, black presidents and unfounded fears of gun control to do something stupid.

LOL. This is another instance where a lefty (I can assume you’re a lefty?) denies something that the adminstration had to rescind. Too funny. You guys love that maneuver. It doesn’t exist … but we’re taking it out, anyway.

And there are. Also, it was commissioned by the Bush Administration, hardly a liberal bastion.

It was not a Bush piece. It came from this administration. You probably think that Bush told the Missouri cops to issue their warning about threatening bumper stickers, too. You’re nuts, man.

And you’re in favor of secret aganecies being unaccountable for possible crimes and violations?

The instances were all previously investigated. But, then, liberals wanted to try the whole Bush administration, so I guess that would be your answer to that. You people are like a third world junta. No wonder you all support Zelaya’s attempted coup.

You think Obama’s agencies should be above the law, too?

No. I think The Precedent and much of his administration belong in jail. This nation has seen action by this adminstration that is unprecedented in American history … North American history.

And, yeah. We’re America. we have to hold ourselves to the highest standards — that means obeying laws, Constitution and international agreements,

“international agreements”? Like the ridiculously unrealistic Geneva Conventions that no one in the world has ever followed? Is that what youmean? You know that our strategic nuclear arsenal, designed to instantly incinerate tens of millions of men, women, children, and pets stands in contravention to the Geneva Conventions. Do you think we should unilaterally dismantle it, to be in full compliance?

You people pick and choose ridiculous pieces from international treaties and go after Americans with them. It is nothing less than attacking the US, which is what liberals are all about. Just listen to The Precedent and he’ll tell you all about how bad and evil America is. But you know, already. Don’t you?

even when it’s inconvenient. Because when we stop doing that, we stop being America.

Yes. We were not America in WWII, when we incinerated whole cities. What country were we? Do you think we were mirandizing non-americans on foreign soil? No … that’s a new attack on America by the left. You guys can’t find enough ways to weaken our military.

right2bright on September 14, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Of course liberals don’t believe what they say in public…they use phrases like “follow the constitution” or “defend it”, but then they do everything to undermine it, deny freedom of speech, or right of gun ownership.
He stated one thing, but we all know he believes another…Senator Wilson knows the right word for them…

right2bright on September 14, 2009 at 6:27 PM

When liberals say “Constitution”, they don’t mean the whole document, just a few of the amendments and only to be used in liberal-approved contexts. The rest of the document they don’t even bother with.

Thanks, Del. Liberal abuse of the Geneva Conventions has been pet peeve of mine for a long time. I can’t stand people who think that international treaties are like international law, instead of whole contracts that must be adhered to in their entirety, especially if they have no actual enforcement/punishment mechanisms, or are rendered void.

Wait until the liberals figure out that all spy organizations are designed to specifically go out and violate the laws of other countries. They’re going to be really mad about that. “The CIA picked a lock in Amsterdam? PROSECUTE THEM ALL!!!”

Funny thing about the UN sanctions against Iraq was that the Left had absolutely no problem with Iraq ignoring them-even though many of them were the direct result of surrender documents signed by Iraq after we liberated Kuwait-another military action many on the Left opposed.

They had no problem with Saddam’s troops raping and killing, and had absolutely no problem with those same troops setting all of those oil wells on fire and dumping all those millions of barrels of oil into a marine ecosystem.

Yet at the same time, they regularly condemned the evil Joos in Israel for ignoring UN sanctions.

Del Dolemonte on September 14, 2009 at 7:00 PM

I wonder what we did to make them do whatever they wanted to do.
We should really stop doing whatever that was and apologize! If we do that, then I’m sure they will stop doing whatever it was they wanted to do.
But thats only common sense. When is America going to get a major clue??

Itchee Dryback on September 14, 2009 at 6:07 PM

Unfortunately the leftists will never get a clue. This war has been going on since about 700 AD when the leader of it all stopped loving his nine year old bride long enough to declare jihad on the world.

We need leaders like Jan III Sobieski whom the jihadists feared with every fiber of their bodies, not the jug eared Nevil Chamberlain that doofus americanus put into our white hhouse. BTW Sobieski was not against muslims, just jihadists. His life was saved by one of his Tatar (Muslim) troops at the battle of Parkinay which was right after he crushed the Turks at Vienna and killed about 20,000 of them plus another 15-20 thousand at Parkinay.

Anyway, under this administration it isn’t a matter of IF, but WHEN we will suffer another strike. I listened to a speech by a former SECNAV discussing the possiblities and didn’t sleep right for a couple of days. I almost NEVER have problems like that.

We are playing for keeps and the leftists are playing “Junior commie camp”

Bleeds Blue on September 14, 2009 at 5:34 PM

I don’t know what you are full of but I sure want to be upwind of it.

Nice Suburban Communities??? I drove by and FBI armored vehicle in our neighborhood the other day and they sure as heck weren’t stopping for $tarbucks. I never did find out what was going on but a vehicle that is 50 cal and 20mm resistant makes me nervous when it’s in my neighnorhood.

Also, as a typical liberal, you probably have very little understanding of the military and terrorist thought. There was evidence that the jihadis were practicing on schoolbusses. Ever heard of Beslan?? The typical terrorist looks for the softest targets possible. They are like the pita freaks who throw paint on old ladies for wearing fur but would never have the male genitalia to throw paint on a bunch of bikers for wearing leather (Yep, I’m comparing liberals to terrorists, how bout that??)

Also, as a liberal, you probably have no idea of the effect of various nukes detonated at various altitudes or the things that can be added to poison the landscape for millenia. I’m in one of those ‘suburban communities you scoff at’. True a 10k airburst at 5000 feet might not have an immediate effect on me. However, my family would be at risk from the fallout depending on how dirty the explosion was and the prevailing winds.

The difference between liberals and conservatives/libertarians is that the latter of us

1. have a much clearer understanding of the psychological and physical threat

2. We know who the real enemies are and it ain’t Joe Wilson Einstein

3. We believe in taking care of ourselves, not waiting for nanny government to help us. Your conservative neighbors are the ones with the bug out bags, the ones who don’t have the metrosexual skills like getting manicures and pedicures but who know how to cook and kill game.

4. The election of Obmamama has done more to put us at risk than anything else could have. Liberals forget history like Neville chamberlain and a certain charismatic leader. Appeasement doesn’t work. That mistake was paid for in billions of gallons of blood.

Let’s suppose as an intellectual exercise the jihadis do pull the old ‘suitcase nuke in small airplanes stunt’ off? What do you think Obama will do?? I can tell you. He will clamp down on the citizens of the US. He will NOT go after the jihadists in any meaningful way.

We need to go back to a version of MAD. ie. “Hey you jihadist mongrels. if you try that Crud here, we will ladder strike the middle east until every one of your cities is razed to the point where a 10 Millimeter high hill will be an anomoly”. “If you try a Beslan Style attack we will hunt the perps and their families down and butcher them.”

We need Machiavelli, Sobieski, Churchill and Martel. Instead we got the Chicago thug machine. At least the Chicago machine was effective in whacking the witness against Blago to protect Ozero.

Have a nice day :))

Del Dolemonte on September 14, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Yeah. Typical for the left. They want the heads of Exxon execs, when Exxon never wanted to have their oil spilled (as they lose the money and have to pay for the clean up) but Saddam goes out of his way to become the greatest “eco-terrorist” in history, all as he was being allowed to retreat in one of the most humiliating defeats of all time, and that same left has nothing to say about it. I used to tell lefties that they should want Saddam out more than anyone, if they really believed their own claims of caring about the environment. But, most lefties didn’t care what Saddam did and most probably don’t even remeber the gulf spill (4 times the size of the Valdez spill and only kept from being bigger because our troops stopped the flow) or the burning Kuwaiti fields. Meanwhile, they go apesh!t if I want to light up a cigarette.

In an interesting related note, just after the first gulf war, Kuwait ejected 400,000 Palestinians, because Arafat supported Saddam. But no one ever heard of that because the media was concentrating on 212 Hamas members that Israel ejected, temporarily, and were living on the Lebanese border with something like 500 members of the media.

The despicable, lying nature of the left is really something to behold. It’s amazing they can live with themselves, but not such a big surprise considering that they are emotional basket cases who would be more at home in an insane asylum than free on the street.

Nope, not funny at all. Jugears Ozero has shown his contempt of this country and disregard for it’s safety repeatedly. Let’ throw a couple of things out. I’m sure others can add to this list

1. He grabbed his package instead of saluting during the national anthem.. That might seem like a small thing (pun intented) But it does speak volumes

2. His preacher of 20 years repeatedly yelled “GOD D*MN AMERICA”.. yep, gives me the warm fuzzies

3. He deliberatley sought out marxist professors according to his own admission

4. He was more than casually involved with Billy Bomber Ayers… A guy who trampled on the American flag and whose group planned the cold blooded murder of noncoms and their dates.. THAT speaks volumes

5. He flipped the bird to our closest allies and a short time later bowed to the islamic Saudi King to the point where it looked like he was knob gobbling the king

6. He allowed his campaign to deliberately mock a war hero’s wounds.

7. He ignored the prayer breakfast but happily celebrated Ramadan.. Nothing to see there, move along.

8. His economic policies are poised to wreck our economy. Heck, you could have taken any of the Jihadists out of Gitmo, put a suit on them and stuck them in the oval office and they would have inflicted less damage on this country.

So, the argument in your statement is lame. There is no contradiction.

A. Islamic terrorism is a huge threat

B. We don’t trust ojugears to put America first and not play games with the situation for his political gain

Statements A and B are not exclusive

BTW – I seem to remember a certain president, the guy who inserted cigars into a girl a year older than his daughter, who did a Wag the Dog when he was having some PR problems.
