Axelrod: Tea Party protests don’t represent “mainstream” view of ObamaCare

posted at 1:36 pm on September 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

How does one define “mainstream”? The WaPo/ABC poll shows, even with its skewed sample, that ObamaCare is opposed 48%-46% by adults overall, let alone registered or likely voters. That’s slightly better than the 50%-45% a month ago, but it took a presidential speech and an even bigger Dem-Rep gap in the sample to get it. Strictly speaking, the mainstream view was out on the street, not in the Oval Office, but don’t expect David Axelrod to admit that on Face the Nation:

SCHIEFFER: Mr. Axelrod, what do you make of this demonstration yesterday on the streets of Washington? Do you, do you think it’s indicative of the nation’s mood, and what message do you have this morning for those people who were on the streets here yesterday?

AXELROD: Well, first of all Bob, I don’t think it’s indicative of the nation’s mood. In fact, I don’t believe that some of the angriest, strident, most strident voices we saw during the summer were representative of the thousands of town hall meetings that went on around the country, that came off peacefully, that were constructive, people voicing their points of view. But this, you know, one of the great things about our country is that people can express themselves, even if they’re not representative of the majority. Your own poll, taken after the President’s speech, suggests that they don’t represent a mainstream view of this health-care plan, and so, you know, I don’t think we ought to be distracted by that.

My message to them is: they’re wrong. The President made it very, very clear that he wants to build on the system that we have, that he wants to fix what’s wrong with it, so that insurance company bureaucrats can’t rule arbitrarily over the lives of their customers in ways that are very significant, that people don’t go broke because of out-of-pocket costs from the insurance companies, and we want to make sure that people who can’t afford health care today because they’re, they don’t get it from their employer, can get health care at a price they can afford. Right now, they have to pay three times as much as anyone else. So that’s what this is about. We ought to focus on what it’s about and not on distortions of it.

The poll to which Axelrod refers surveyed those who watched the speech. It started with a sample of 648 adults, only 53% of whom watched the speech, or 388 adults. CBS weighted them down to 345 for their analysis, and a poll of less than 400 adults in either case is hardly a reliable sample.

But who watched the speech? Not surprisingly, a lot more Democrats than Republicans. The sample had a 15-point gap between them, 42% Democrat to 27% Republican. This makes it no more useful than a website poll for its predictive value. The fact that Axelrod latched onto it demonstrates his desperation more than anything else.

As far as “peaceful” protests go, it’s worth noting that the only significant violence at these town-hall forums came when union thugs acted as enforcers for ObamaCare. Until they beat an ObamaCare opponent to a pulp in St. Louis, the meetings had been peaceful, if loud.

Barack Obama sent Axelrod out to spin for the White House, and Axelrod spun hard enough to show their desperation. Despite their protestations, the administration is well aware that the town-hall demonstrations and the march on Washington this weekend represent “mainstream” views.

A massive protest march is totally outweighed by a single poll which shows Obama has barely crept back into a bare majority on an issue that he has polled as not having a majority on for weeks and weeks now?

Rasmussen gets his results by telephone polling, and they’re usually pretty accurate, but Rasmussen himself tends to label weekend polling as skewed. Many exit polls during elections show that married voters with children tend to be more conservative than single voters, but married voters with children are less likely to be near their phones on weekends than on weekday evenings.

This past weekend’s polling is likely to be particularly skewed due to the massive protests in Washington DC. How many ObamaCare opponents who might ordinarily have told Rasmussen of their opposition were away from their phones this past weekend, after which Rasmussen would have called someone else, more likely to be in favor?

When the Tea Party people go back home to work, their opinions will show up in Rasmussen polls again. Rasmussen polls use rolling averages over the three days prior to the release date of a poll, so that today’s poll is an average of polls taken Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Prediction: Support for ObamaCare should remain steady tomorrow, as Friday’s polling drops out of the average and Monday’s polling is included.

On Wednesday, Saturday’s polls (somewhat depleted of opponents) drop out of the average and Tuesday’s polls are included, and support for ObamaCare should drop. On Thursday, Sunday’s polls (when Tea Partiers were out in force and away from their phones) drop out of the average and Wednesday’s polls kick in, which should show a precipitous drop in support for ObamaCare.

We won’t really know until Thursday if Obama’s speech actually increased popular support for his health-care plan, since samples taken over the weekend were depleted of the plan’s most vocal opponents.

While it is true that less than 50% of people support ObamaCare, 98% of funeral directors do and Axelgrease does rather look like a funeral director.

I was fortunate enough to be able to make the trip to march up Pennsylvania Avenue with thousands of others who are concerned with the direction this administration and its illegal czars are taking us. We are not Republicans. We are not Democrats. We are not of any ethnicity or creed. We are Americans. Each of us there represented the views of many. We are not, as one pundit quipped, ‘a vocal minority’. We cannot be stopped.

It seems the fate of Mr. Axelrod and myself are intertwined.

I shared an elevator with him when I was in DC a couple months back.

And now they showed me in the footage with my sign front and center RIGHT BEFORE he started talking (:08 to :10 mark)

I hope we cross paths again. I hate this slimeball.

Not only do they think they are deceiving the American people – they are acutally deceiving themselves. That is the hallmark of a good liar – you start believing your own lies.
The ONLY thing that will make them see the truth is in 2010 when we clean our house of all the muck raking bottom feeders – Democrat and Republican alike – leaving Obama all alone to his own delusions.

I think if the Dems take a big beating in 2010, Axelrod will be gone, right along with Robert Gibbs and some of the most liberal czars/advisors in the administration. It will be an obvious rejection of the left wing of the Dem party if they take a beating, so President Obama would do well to get a clue next year…if it happens. Judging by how government-handout hungry a lot of the electorate is, I wouldn’t rush to judgment.

Honestly, what ever happened to the president rising above this and acknowledging that he represents all of the people – not just those that agree with him, and also acknowledging that those that disagree may have a valid point or two. Instead, we get only name calling, disgust, and lame attempts to marginalize millions and millions of American citizens. Disgusting.

Steve, even if there were 500,000 people in DC all of whom were considered likely voters, no one else were at home when called and no cell phones were used in the Rasmussen polls, it would affect the results by less than .5%. There were 231 million registered voters and 132,000,000 actual voters in 2008.

Just last week’s fiasco of BO addressing the school kids should be a wake up call for his team of cretins. I don’t recall anytime where American families would NOT trust a president to speak to their kids. I mean, man, several school districts cancelled the whole speech. That is an amazing testiment to what is happening at the grassroot level.

But Axlegrease and you Chicago thugs, keep believing the LIE…you’ll be slammed in 2010.

MaryO, I was there too. Did we march UP Pennsylvania avenue or DOWN it? ;-)

But seriously, I share your sentiments on the march. I was listening to Andrew Wilkow’s show today on XM, and a caller said that he was driving home to San Antonio TX from the DC march. He described himself as a black guy, 6′ 2″ and 300 lbs. He was literally in tears, sobbing, describing how friendly and hospitable everyone was to him, and that 2 of the strangers he met at the rally called him on his cell phone to make sure he was alright driving home. He deeply resented the charges of racism against the good Americans who participated in this march.

I got a bit choked up myself just listening to the guy.

F**k anyone who says that this has anything to do with race.

Terrye on September 14, 2009 at 3:04 PM

What is being missed is that the resason the Dems want this is that it is the fix to the Medicare fiscal problem. They can’t fund Medicare going forward as it currently is operated and the boomers are coming. What to do? Cut services under the new prorgam. Death panels are implied under the bills. It is a sneak attack on everyone over 40. Being well over 70 makes this very personal for me. I paid in at max. I want my health costs paid per the contract. So what to do?

Require everyone to be covered. Let’s get some diversity in the pool.
Cover the real poor, and near poor, under a revised Medicaid.
Cover the uninsurable pre-existers in a ” subsidized high risk pool” run by the insurance companies.
Let people buy insurance across state lines.
Pass a realistic tort reform bill.
Leave my health insurance alone.
Stop parsing words and lying to us.

How to become an Obamacrat in five easy steps:

1. Start by erecting a straw man argument(s) that nobody made and attribute it (them) to your political opponents.
2. Viciously attack the strawman argument(s) that nobody made and destroy it (them).
3. Claim victory over strawman argument(s) that your political opponents never made and wouldn’t make because they’re actually smarter than you and wouldn’t be stupid enough to make such idiotic arguments.
4. Ignore people who point out to you that you’re attacking an argument(s) that nobody made and hence you’re avoiding addressing the actual argument you’re pretending you’re making.
5. YAY OBAMA!

How does one define “mainstream”?

In the gospel according to Axelrod, the “mainstream” these days are the disciples who, without question or hesitation, love and adore Lord Obama with every beat of their hearts, every blink of their eyes and every breath in their souls.

The rest of us are just a bunch of racist, bitter clingers who are standing in the way of the Utopian dream.

constitutionally ineligible for office

This is a not-yet-disproven statement. Simply releasing the totality of his records would end argument (one way or the other) for all time. Absent those records, there is room for dispute. Your leader could put this to rest, and has chosen not to.

ABC released another sad poll for Obama today. He really hasn’t moved the dial a bit with his speeches.

The left is now painting the tea party in DC as a “fake photo.” They are in defense mode. Didn’t help that the turnout for the DC healthcare reform on Sunday fizzled, of course.

I’m thinking that the real story is that Obama painted a false picture of populism, backed by huge and authentic rallies in the election.

But this was, as many pointed out, a very young base. They really are pretty lazy, politically speaking. He’s carrying the load right now. Pundits are doing all the talking.

The actual populism is like watching yeast bread rise. It’s pretty impressive.

I’m thinking that the real story is that Obama painted a false picture of populism, backed by huge and authentic rallies in the election.

I would argue the use of the word authentic. It is impossible for authentic support when the thing they are supporting is in fact a lie. All Obama’s pretty talk has proven to be one big lie. There are many who don’t accept that yet. But I think it is only a matter of time now before the realization hits.

Everything Obama has touched has blown up in his face. It has only been a few months… He shows no signs of improvement.
