ACORN: Big Apple, Big Pimping
posted at 8:48 am on September 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It was just a fluke, ACORN insisted the first time that James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles published their undercover video showing their office in Baltimore helping a pimp evade taxes and get a mortgage by deceit for a brothel. They fired a couple of “bad apples” in that office, and a couple of more bad apples in Washington DC when that office got caught on hidden camera doing the same thing. In fact. ACORN went so far as to brag that the pair had tried the same thing and failed in “San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia to name a few places.”
Really? New York’s ACORN office was too sophisticated to fall for that scam? The video at Big Government today indicates that ACORN’s Big Apple office is equally as heartless and corrupt as DC and Baltimore, as two of their staffers advise O’Keefe and Giles how to cover up a child-prostitution ring and evade taxes:
When you get a house with a backyard … you get a tin and put the money in it … and bury it.
ACORN has access to billions of dollars in federal funding through Porkulus, and already gets hundreds of millions a year in federal funding through other programs, mainly through HUD. It’s time — it’s well past time — for Congress to suspend any payments to ACORN for any purposes.
One incident may have been a fluke, and two a coincidence, but three times makes a pattern. These aren’t offices in the sticks, either, but offices in some of the most important American cities. Does ACORN train its people on how to screw the American people on income taxes while getting federal funds, or just look to hire the most heartless people in the world to help pimps hide child prostitution rings?

Objectively, anyone with a mouthpeice/bully pulpit who does not decry this as immoral and illegal is, at the least, morally complicit.
The virtual silence over has much to do with Obama. They cannot say a damn word about it because everyone KNOWS this organization is his baby. It’s a massive blow to his credibility. NO ONE wants to deal with this.
I wonder when HE will say something about the very group he helped train?

What are the chances that a random sampling of big city ACORN offices would produce the same results? I go with what Ed said…this is a case of corruption at the level of ‘troops on the ground’, but suggests at a minimum that employees at this level are not trained to deal truthfully and with integrity. That is a management problem.

Holder and Obama may be able to stop a full scale RICO investigation but they have also set the precedent of going after former Presidents people in court. Hopefully this will be dealt with someday. Although, Republicans do show so little courage when going after the left. Too much fear of the smear machine.
Speaking of smear machine… with all Beck’s past drinking he no doubt has one or two skeletons and they are likely being magnified even now to show what a untrustworthy man he is… We simply cannot let what ever they come up with shock us because it will only be a distraction.

Jeff from WI on September 14, 2009 at 11:17 AM
If this were an instance of one ACORN office getting burned, I’d agree with you but this is a systemic problem and suggests the opposite to be true. Specifically, ACORN trains its employees to be dishonest without any sort of ethical standards in what they are doing. Their mission is to get that brothel up and running and beholden to ACORN so that in 2012 the “HO’s for Change” will be out there registering the vermin of society to vote for the filthy liar in the White House.
highhopes on September 14, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Exactly! And the only thing on Obama’s resume for the years prior to the Illinois Senate was:
Training ACORN
These people learned how to put brothels of child sex slaves into our neighborhoods directly from our illustrious President himself.
This IS bigger than Nixon or Clinton. Yet I don’t know how you touch him.
I guess that is the difference between really well thought out criminal enterprises and sloppy sex addicts and over zealous paranoids.

It’s not simply the connection to Obama — it’s the credo of the MSM itself: people of color can do no wrong. So it is written. So shall it be.
As long as the visible face of ACORN is black or brown, so shall it remain, for the media.

I have had such a bad feeling about Obama from the minute he stepped on the national stage. He is just a regular crime wave all by himself. Now we see that he has attatched himself to ACORN with far reaching illegalities all over the country, and most probablly the entire world. This is bigger than Watergate and it is impeachable.

I think it certainly should be but I don’t think anyone can directly connect Obama to doing these acts himself. Just encouraging others. And I think he has had to create some kind of arms length record to be able to funnel all the money to them. I think he has protected himself legally.
Popular opinion should be another thing. I personally don’t think anyone I know of any political stripe would think this kind of thing is what they want for this country. Even the deepest kool-aid drinkers have to have pause over this.

You can’t rake a few leaves and presume to have cleared the ground of the corrupt root cause that yet stands as a huge tree covering more corruption, producing more corruption.
ACORN should systematically be taken down whole, prosecute the entire organization for having permitted so much illegal activity, knowingly or not. It doesn’t require federal tax dollars or federal agents to privately investigate local ACORN members and produce records of local ACORN corruption where you all live. With our own local records uncovered and produced to authorities, we then demand ACORN MEMBERS be prosecuted for corruption in our locales. Nationally, we need to take on Holden and Loretta King who’ve been enabled by Obama to completely corrupt our Department of Justice. As part of their personal and professional responsibility to uphold our Constitutional Government, it would be within the rights of our Supreme Court Justices, AS PRIVATE CITIZENS, to clarify legal means to oppose the corruption running our nation from the Office of the Attorney General, and the Acting Assistant Attorney General charged to protect our civil rights.
maverick muse on September 14, 2009 at 11:31 AM
To start this, we are publishing an internal quasi-employee manual Big Government has obtained. Given to all ACORN employees, it isn’t your normal manual. It doesn’t discuss things like sick leave or vacation time, but, rather, as the title states, the “Principles and Foundations of ACORN.” How an organization communicates with the public is important. How it communicates to its own employees, however, provides a richer understanding of an organization’s nature.
The whole thing is worth a read. I draw your attention to just one sentence (ACORN emphasizes it with italics):
ACORN’s lifeblood is conflicts with targets outside the organization.
Think about that. ACORN’s lifeblood isn’t empowering disadvantaged communities nor lifting people out of poverty. It isn’t concerned about increasing economic growth to improve the lives of its members. It’s lifeblood is conflict. Conflict with targets. It actually thinks of the world outside itself as targets.
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/11270423/Principles-and-Foundations-of-Acorn
———————————-
This is a close to a mob manual as you can make! They should retitle the sections as follows:
____Section 1: Exploit the vulnerable. (ACORN “must” bring new membership each month)
__Section 2: Exploit the poor for your wealth. (You’ve got to get good at bringing in money so you can have the wealth you deserve)
__Section 3: Don’t get Caught. (Coordinated autonomy allows the top to deny any wrongdoing in what its subsidiaries do.)
__Section 4: Include everyone [even prostitutes] (A multi-issue organization with “diverse” members)
__Section 5: Act… Or Else! (They speak of cardiac arrest. What methods do they use as the analagous defribillator?)
__Section 6: Act like a leader, even if you can’t. (Most of our members have no leadership experience)
__Section 7: ACORN now owns your life. (Not having enough time is no excuse for not working and ensuring others are working)
__Section 8: Lie, Lie, Lie (Every ACORN member must learn to “improvise” when knocking on doors.)
I hope this was an adequate analyzation…

Supreme Court Justices lifetime appointments were so designed in order to protect them from political backlash, including progressive backlash, or backlash from either/both of the other branches, Executive and Legislative. It is the responsibility of the Supreme Court Justices to do their part to keep their own Judicial Branch clean, to promote and preserve our citizens’ Constitutional Rights within the Judicial Branch, and to call out the Attorney General for subverting the Justice Department.

Excellent question. “Community Organizing” should be banned. I have always questioned the wisdom of busing people to the polls. There is just something crooked about the whole idea of pressuring people to vote who would’nt normally do it on their own.
This should cause everyone to stop anything more than educating people about where to find forms on their own and fill them out. Voting should be completely voluntary and it isn’t with ACORN breathing down your neck.

Statement from Bertha Lewis, Chief Organizer, ACORN Regarding Recent News Reports
September 12, 2009
The relentless attacks on ACORN’s members, its staff and the policies and positions we promote are unprecedented. An international entertainment conglomerate, disguising itself as a “news” agency (Fox), has expended millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, in their attempt to destroy the largest community organization of Black, Latino, poor and working families in the country. It is not coincidence that the most recent attacks have been launched just when health care reform is gaining traction. It is clear they’ve had these tapes for months.
We are their Willy Horton for 2009. We are the boogeyman for the right-wing and its echo chambers. If ACORN did not exist, the right-wing would have needed to create us in order to achieve their agenda, their missions, their ideal, retrograde America. This recent scam, which was attempted in San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia to name a few places, had failed for months before the results we’ve all recently seen. I am appalled and angry; I cannot and I will not defend the actions of the workers depicted in the video, who have since been terminated. But it is clear that the videos are doctored, edited, and in no way the result of the fabricated story being portrayed by conservative activist “filmmaker” O’Keefe and his partner in crime. And, in fact, a crime it was – our lawyers believe a felony – and we will be taking legal action against Fox and their co-conspirators.
We will not be intimidated by this international conglomerate, which has made as its mission the destruction of our organization. ACORN members are committed to the empowerment of their communities – Black, Latino, poor, and working families – at the deepest level. We are an organization committed to halting the foreclosure crisis and keeping people in their homes. We are an organization committed to ensuring quality, affordable health care for every American. We are an organization that will not be stopped in our commitment to our members and our communities which has included:
Helping hundreds of thousands of African-American and Latino voters register to vote and get to the polls in recent years;
Preparing, since 2004, approximately 150,000 free tax returns totaling $190 million in refunds and increased earned income tax credit participation;
Providing effective foreclosure prevention advocacy saving thousands of American families from losing their homes to foreclosure.

I admire the way BigGovernment.com releases these videos one by one, at intervals. One can see the progression from Baltimore, to Washington, D.C., and to New York. I wonder if Chicago is the size-13 EE shoe, waiting to be dropped. Look up, Mr. President, look up!

Two of the five members of the board of directors are former teachers.

Hillary is warning about the depredations of ACORN today! :)

I predicted at my DC ACORN scandal post that there would be at least one more and probobly more than one; not that that was a difficult prediction. I stand by that same prediction in my NY ACORN scandal post despite another one coming to light. The constant ‘drip, drip, drip’ is putting ACORN in a tough spot, but it is one they have gotten themselves into.

Mr. O’Keefe and Ms. Giles should get a Pulitzer prize for journalism. Give all the so called journalists in all the liberal rags something to which to aspire. The brillance of this escapade is something short of stunning. They obviously knew that they would be accused of baiting their targets so they release one tape to the excuse of ACORN that it is isolated. Then the release of the second – again ACORN excuses and righteous indignation – THEN THE THIRD – brilliant! Thank you James and Hannah you should make these other journalists ashamed of themselves.

Why is no one talking about the fact that the Brooklyn office is where Bertha Lewis works. How did she not know what was going on with employees that have been there for years.
Yes the teachers union paid ACORN $1.3 million since 2005 – WE have paid ACORN $1.4 million (through FEMA) since 2008!
