Obama: National dialogue “coarsening”

Barack Obama is concerned about the “coarsening” of our national debate:

President Barack Obama said in an interview to be aired Sunday night on “60 Minutes” that he sees “a coarsening of our political dialogue.”

“The truth of the matter is that there has been, I think, a coarsening of our political dialogue,” Obama told Steve Kroft in an interview taped at the White House on Friday evening.

“I will also say that in the era of 24-hour cable news cycles, that the loudest, shrillest voices get the most attention. And so one of the things that I’m trying to figure out is: How can we make sure that civility is interesting?”

Bob Schieffer, who played the clip on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” said Kroft had asked the president what he thought of all the anger that had erupted over the summer.

Coarse dialogue bothers the president? Is it safe to say he’s getting “all wee-wee’d up” over it?

Or, perhaps, it’s the scare tactics that bother him?

Or maybe when Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer called town-hall feedback “un-American”? Or perhaps this moment when John Dingell compared the protesters to the KKK?

I’d say “Physician, heal thyself,” but Obama would probably propose a new bureaucracy for that. Disdain, indeed.

Dear President Obama,

Coarsening? You want to see COARSENING?

How about this: STFU!

And, oh, just go away.

Oh, and there’s an ARSE in the middle of “coarsening”.

“…highly motivated GOP base confused PISSED OFF by the president’s proposed health care plan and angry at what they consider reckless spending and high debt.”

I have a recurring dream….Obama is giving a press conference, his tone coarsens, his face bears the Obama signature contemptuous smirk, when suddenly someone in the audience yells “YOU LIE!” throws a big shoe right at his face…a shoe with cleats.

And the SS would shoot the thrower, unlike they did when a shoe was thrown at Bush.

Liam on September 13, 2009 at 4:29 PM

Barack Obama has no choice but to belittle and marginalize the opposition because he is unable to force his will on them, like he can in person by virtue of his office. Which is why, I believe, we are seeing more and more of his frustration leaking through…referring to the opposition as, ‘they’, for example, and using harsh scare tactics. He admonishes the opposition for coarseness because it’s all he has left…to be coarse.

The only way to deal with a narcissist is to refuse to play. Ironically, Alinsky’s methods might actually work on him!

The Strange Case of Professor Obama and Mr Hussein is a real life drama playing out in the aftermath of the Presidential election of 2008. It is about the dilemma of the American citizen who sees strange dissonances between the new found Messiah, Professor Obama, and the ever more emerging misanthropic, pyromaniac (reference note #1) Mr. Hussein. It is a vivid portrayal of a split personality, split in the sense that within the same person there is, or was, both an apparently good and an ever more emerging evil personality each being quite distinct from the other. In mainstream culture the very phrase “Obama and Hussien” will come to mean a person who’s words are vastly different in moral character from his actions.

Reference note #1: Such individuals who lack ulterior motive have traditionally been referred to in layman’s terms simply as a variation of a pyromaniac. Most such maniacs lack conscious motivation although they are fully aware of the acts they are failing to stop or they themselves are committing. Typically they will feel intense pleasure, gratification, or relief when causing destruction or when witnessing or participating in the aftermath. Motivation is also classified as pathological and non-pathological. Some research suggests that feeling such joy at horrific situation is pathological. Other research suggests that some motivation for this comes from rational thought. Taking joy in horrific situations for envisioned gains in political power and/or the concealment of the imposition of devious plans are examples of supposed rational decision making.

Hell, even if this clod was a charismatic, conservative president, I would be sick of him. Now, he is beyond tedious and I feel like he’s already been in office for about 14 yers.

That’s all he’s got — the media. They’re more deserving of wrath than he is.

Without the media, his cult of personality ceases to exist. It’s a mutual symbiotic relationship, and they are far from being “sick of him.”

Awwwww. You’re makin’ me cry.

It’s amazing how it’s only “coarse” when it’s not someone fawning over him, or slamming someone who disagrees with him.

And so one of the things that I’m trying to figure out is: How can we make sure that civility is interesting?”

This from the former candidate who flipped off 2 of his opponents, HRC and JM…in a civil passive-aggressive manner, of course???? His civility made an interesting and lasting impression on me. I changed party affiliation.

Yah know “ola” I have a soft spot in my heart for that homey colloquialism “wee-wee” …My momma used to use it all the time; when I was a kid some seventy years ago.

I find it somewhat ironic; that so many good olde, down home, conservatives here, have jumped on the CIC for his very effective use of that familiar, familial expression.

Wrong, Mr. Hussein Obama, it’s you, your administration and your party as a whole, who depicts any and all dissenters as racists, that are coursening the debate.

Stop lying and pitting everyone against each other based on race and class.

Now, on top of being School Principal in Chief, the Surgeon General, the CEO of AmericanCars, and all his other roles, he wants to be the Head of All Debate Anywhere.

Is there no limit to this totalitarian-wannabe nag’s endless, pompous hectoring? Apparently not. Effete moralizing is the Progressive’s life mission and this guy’s got a severe case of Carter’s disease.

On the upside, couple that with his continual pouting because Congress won’t instantly pass his every wish, and you have a guarantee of continually falling ratings.

“I will also say that in the era of 24-hour cable news cycles, that the loudest, shrillest voices get the most attention”

Interesting comment from Obama, who is on national tv almost 24/7, loudly, shrillingly chiding anyone who opposes him!

TN Mom on September 13, 2009 at 7:04 PM

Narcissists are the least likely of the mentally ill to seek help or receive when it’s offered. Arrogance is a pillar of narcissism…an entrenched confidence that one (the narcissist, himself) has the only valued (or existing) reference point.

Narcissists are incapable of compromise because they refuse (or are unable) to elevate any other option to the level of plausible. BO’s meme of being one who seeks consensus is a farce. He is verbally gifted and uses his wiles to dominate the will of the opposition. The wider the circle of those who must me convinced, the more likely he will encounter a Joe Wilson, who is willing to risk embarrassment to state the obvious: the emperor has no clothes.

VoyskaPVO on September 13, 2009 at 3:52 PM

Isn’t that the truth? It seems like he’s been President forever. I can’t take him anymore.

Then sometimes it feels like a bad dream. Like it can’t possibly be that this radical, arrogant, inexperienced nobody came out of nowhere and practically overnight became our President. Not even a year before the election everyone – EVERYONE- didn’t think he had a shot. Maybe 8 years later, but no way this time. We all know how it happened, but it still seems unbelievable to me.

And it’s only been about half a year. So much damage to come. The people are motivated, but will the Republicans get their act together? Who knows.

Elisa on September 13, 2009 at 7:17 PM

You started it Mrxist Alinsky boy

bill30097 on September 13, 2009 at 7:18 PM

Maybe I’m just cynical and maybe someone has noted this already, but has anyone noticed that he is mentioning the “24 hour news cycle” and the “media” a lot more?

Call me a conspiracy theorist if you wish, but I’m starting to think that there may be a plan for the White House to seize control of the media in the future. I mean the media is already in his pocket and they simply spew talking points as it is, but he’s still whining about them.

I think his whining about the media is to condition people that it would be in everyone’s best interest if there were only 2 tv news channels (1 network and 1 cable) and 1 radio news channel. That way things don’t get all wee-weed up in the translation of other channels and stations.

I mean we know the White House hates Fox News and they just jumped all over CNN about misreporting the drills. That leaves MSNBC as the only “righteous” cable network right now.

Hmmm… I think we need to focus on his whining a little more. It’s when someone whines that you find out their true feelings and/or motives.
