NFL Open Thread: Week 1

posted at 11:14 am on September 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We’re back to the regular season of the NFL, which means I get to have my Sunday football posts again in 2009.  The first week got off to a great start, as the Steelers jumped to the lead in the AFC … because they played on Thursday, which I almost missed until someone on Twitter wondered why I was so quiet about the game.  I tuned in during the second half and watched Pittsburgh beat Tennessee in overtime, 13-10.  Hopefully, the defending Super Bowl champs won’t make the rest of the season so … exciting.

I’ve spent the last few weeks watching Hard Knocks on HBO, the show that follows one team through training camp.  This season, HBO chose the Cincinnati Bengals, Steeler rivals, which made it difficult for me to cheer for anyone in that camp.  It’s a good show, though, and if nothing else it reminded me why I dislike Chad Johnson Ochocinco.  Cincinnati plays Denver today, and I’ll take Denver for lots of reasons, including divisional rivalry.

Other key games today:

  • Minnesota at Cleveland – The Browns are about as hapless as anything south of Detroit.   They’ll start Brady Quinn, the former Notre Dame star, but don’t expect Quinn to rescue the Browns from a tough Vikings defense.  Brett Favre could take half of this game off, too, and the Vikes should still clobber the Browns.  Big question – will the Browns score their first TD in regular play since last November?  Big answer: No.  Vikes, 24-6.
  • Philadelphia at Carolina – Donovan McNabb returns, with Michael Vick as backup.  Carolina will be tough this year, but so will Philly.  I’d guess at a close game, with some decent scoring.  Philly wins, 30-24, with the Panther home crowd barking at Vick about 600,000 times.
  • Washington at the NY Giants – A grudge game so early in the season?  Giants win this one fairly easily.  Eli Manning will have a big game, 28-14.
  • San Diego at Oakland – Oakland sold out its Monday night game, which is great for television viewers in the bay area, since they can watch San Diego thrash them from the comfort of their own living rooms.  35-17, San Diego.
  • Detroit at New Orleans – Can Detroit win its first game in almost two years on the road against the Saints?  They don’t have a prayer.  27-10, New Orleans.

Blowback

I’m not a big Cincinnati fan but Denver sure got lucky. A fluke win

That last catch was spectacular.

It was a fluke catch not a fluke win. Cincy’s offense should have scored far more points and is the real reason they lost….not this catch.

Boo, Washington lost.

Condolences to Lions fans. They just can’t buy a miracle to end this streak. As for the Cardinals (I did listen to the game) I hate to see them lose, but I’m more upset with the atrocious officiating early in the game.

Did these guys skip referee school in the off-season?

I think so. Did you watch the beginning of the Steelers game? They need to be taught the definition of holding and defensive pass interference.

CWforFreedom on September 13, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Why was this posted today? It should have been posted Thursday when the pro football team played and won. Today was for the also-rans.

bill30097 on September 13, 2009 at 9:06 PM

Say it ain’t so, Ed! I deeply respect your political opinion, but now I find out you’re a damn Steelers fan? Well, nobody’s perfect, I guess.

I had the pleasure of listening to my Bengals crap away the game on a last second touchdown tip. The defense played pretty well, but the offense is … ineffectual, to put it kindly. I hope they get some sort of spark, otherwise this will be yet another long and disappointing season.

This was an added bonus after watching my Buckeyes lose on the last drive to USC! Why do I bother rooting for teams?

Same old Rams.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on September 13, 2009 at 7:08 PM

They did not look very polished today. They had opportunities in the first half to put Seattle in the hole and kept mucking them up. The Seahawks 28-0 win could have been a lot more and a lot less.

I was just glad to see Hasselbeck get the offense going in the second half. I was also glad to see the second team defense keep the Rams out of the end zone at the end of the game to preserve the shut-out.

In the first half, the Hawks ran a play where Seneca Wallace took the snap, threw a lateral to Hasselbeck, who was playing in the right slot. Hasselbeck took the ball and threw back to Wallace, who had drifted to the left flat. Wallace took the pass 20+ yards down field. It was a great play that caught everyone in the stadium off guard. The next play…..Hasselbeck threw his third interception. That was how the first half went.

Bears lose.

Jaibones on September 13, 2009 at 11:44 PM

What an awesome win for the Packers. Way to get the “can’t win close games in the 4th quarter” tag off of Aaron Rodgers. And I’m very excited about the Packers defense. Also very nice to see the egomaniac Cutler cut down to size.

packsoldier on September 14, 2009 at 12:10 AM

Packers suck. Bears handed them the game.

Jaibones on September 14, 2009 at 12:56 AM

Chiefs looked good though we lost. We will crush oaktown and if your not a chiefs fan then you are a obama voter. ;)

bessex on September 14, 2009 at 6:42 AM

damn. What a game for Tony Homo. 353 yds and 3 TD’s.

Oh well. Cowboys still suck and every other pigsh#@ team in the NFC East.

Price of my new tv to watch NFL……3000
Price of the meal I always fix on first NFL Sunday….40
Price of watching Cutler throw 4 interceptions….PRICELESS.

(Broncos fan here!)

proudteadrinker on September 14, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Can I just give another “Thank You’ to San Diego for thinking that Drew was unsalvagable after his shoulder injury?

6 passing Td’s… 1 that he underthrew that was int and should have been another.. and then Reggie had one called back on a holding penalty…

Yes indeed, I like my Lions roasted over hot-coals.. next on the menu.. Declawed Eagles!
