Can Obama do math?
posted at 10:50 am on September 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I’m not asking this to be snarky, or at least not entirely. Barack Obama twice this week made an argument that he can squeeze $4 trillion in deficit reduction “over the long term” from an industry that generates a total of $2.3 trillion a year — by slowing the rate of cost inflation through his overhaul prescription. Put aside for the moment whether ObamaCare will slow the rate of growth at all, and how Obama plans to make that happen without rationing. How can he claim to get $4 trillion out of a $2.3 trillion stone, especially since the government’s portion in that is only somewhere between a third and a half?
And as I have said over and over again, I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits – period. This plan will be paid for. The middle-class will realize greater security, not higher taxes. And if we can successfully slow the growth of health care costs by just one-tenth of one percent each year, it will actually reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over the long term.
According to Pacific Research Institute, Medicare and Medicaid cost slightly over $800 billion in 2008, or just about 35% of the entire gross product of the US health-care industry. PRI also notes that government costs have risen faster than the health-care system as a whole, which calls into question whether government programs are the actual cause of the rate of growth in health-care costs. Those numbers appear to correlate with the latest figures of the Census Bureau, which puts the government coverage of the American people at around 34% of the insured population.
But the problem goes further than that. How can Obama claim that he can get $4 trillion in deficit reduction from reducing the growth rate in health-care costs? I posed this question to King Banaian, everyone’s favorite economist, who produced a spreadsheet using data from the HHS on the entire industry, outlining the entirety of cost savings to the industry as a whole (and not just the deficit) by slowing down the cost curve:

In a ten-year window, even if Obama delivered what he promised twice this week, it would save a grand total of $33 billion dollars — and that’s for the whole industry. If the government covered a third of the costs, the total deficit reduction over ten years drops to a mere $11 billion dollars over 10 years. At that rate, how long will the “long run” need to be to save $4 trillion dollars in deficit spending? It would have to be 3,634 years.
Either Obama needs a remedial math lesson, or he’s lying through his teeth.
Addendum: I reserve the right to use this as an OOTD later this week.
Update: Actually, I made a math error here. The $11 billion was over ten years, not one year, which makes the actual time 3,634 years — or about the same period from Moses to now. One reader says that I’m not considering compounding, and he puts the overall savings at $220 billion over ten years and the government savings at less than $80 billion, but that still makes the payoff to $4 trillion hundreds of years off.

Perhaps you don’t mean to be snarky, but I certainly hope your question is rhetorical. You know Obama is lying. Everyone, including the left, knows this, which is why they went so berserk when Wilson pointed it out on national television. Yes, America, our president lies. Knowingly. Cynically. And often.
So could we please dispense with the giving-Obama-the-benefit-of-the-doubt niceties? Gosh, does Obama know math? Hmm, do you think he can add? He’s lying. He’s a liar. He just doesn’t think the full measure of his lies will become apparent until he’s long out of office. Any discussion of his policy priorities needs to start with this fact.

Don’t run the numbers. That just complicates things. As Thomas Sowell shows so profoundly in Applied Economics, liberals are short-term thinkers, unable to visualize the long-term consequences of their policies. They also neither understand what wealth is nor how wealth is created – only that someone else will create it for them so they can redistribute it.
Overdrawn checking account balances and maxed credit cards are almost the exclusive property of liberals.

It’s not Barry’s fault. Socialism 101 didn’t cover any math other than “take from the rich and give to the poor”. It also didn’t cover what would happen when there were no more “rich” to take from.
GarandFan on September 12, 2009 at 11:21 AM
It’s Obamaspeak. It’s Rich Lowery’s Rule #7:
7. Dissemble as necessary. Don’t hesitate to brazen it out as needed. The House plan authorizes the secretary of health and human services to include abortion coverage in the public option. But Obama insists reform won’t cover abortion, and accuses his opponents of lying when they say it will. Shamelessness has its advantages, especially if a compliant press will overlook it.

I teach Sunday School. We talk in a couple of classes about Man’s Math vs. God’s Math. Man’s Math = there is one pie, for me to have enough, I have to take it from someone else. Man’s Math uses division and subtraction. Another term for Man’s Math is Satan’s Math.
God’s Math. There is enough. There has always been enough. There will always be enough. If you simply work on being the person God made you to be, you will be whole and you will not have to beg, steal or borrow from anyone to make you whole or to get more because you will know that you are enough. God’s math is predicated upon addition and multiplication because my job as a whole individual is to simply help you to see that you are a whole individual and give you the tools and skills to teach others that they are also whole individuals.
Which kind of math does Barack Obama use? Which did Reagan use?

Obama can’t be bothered doing the math or any other detail of legislation that might require him to stop talking long enough to truly understand the issues at hand. He’ll hire a math ‘czar’ to do it for him. I can’t decide just how he views his job—apparently he sees it as his duty to just sell the ideas put forth by other branches of government or his advisors. He doesn’t seem to want to take a direct hand in formulating policy or even to bother truly understanding it—just delegate it to others and then go out and try to talk the people into approving whatever results. There’s something really, really remiss about his approach to the job of President.

I, on the other hand, have a plan that will save the taxpayers at least $4 trillion over the next few years: remove Osama Obama and all the self-centered, arrogant, totalitarian thugs from Congress.
Once we fill D.C. with patriotic, sensible people, the deficits will drop, big-time.
As it stands now, we are looking at bankruptcy. Not to mention a total loss of national security and freedom.

Obama must be acquainted with Schleich’s Constant.
Schleich’s Constant is unique in the world of mathematics. It is simultaneously a constant, a variable and an operator. It is used by taking the number you have and by the proper application of Schleich’s Constant you can arrive at the number you want. It was invented by a college friend of mine, Fred Schleich. Fred was a sociology major.

Define ‘savings’
income minus expenditures equals ‘net’
where is the income part of this equation in this article cited?
Washington budget (zero based)
spend 100 percent this year
next year spend 110 percent with this year as ‘base line’
110 percent becomes the new base line
year three, increase spending by 10 percent of 110, so
spending year three is 121 which becomes the new base line
now, suddenly, costs have to be reduced…so year four
we will only increase spending by 8 percent rather than ten.
121 (base line) increased by 8 percent (rounded) 130.7 and suddenly we have ‘saved’ 132.1 (baseline times 10 percent) minus 130.7 for a net 1.4 savings.
again, where is the income part of the equation? we’re still spending money we don’t have. We still spend more every year.
Remember, this is ‘budget’ just projected spending.
Actual spending is another subject entirely.
Federal debt continues to grow at an increasingly accelerated pace because of the compounded effects of spending increases.
So how does Obama intend to reduce actual expenditures? Simple, just don’t pay the bill.
Doctor, hospital, drug company sends in the bill, just don’t pay it. Instant Cost Reduction.
Senior Citizen needs hip replacement, just refuse to pay the cost ‘take two aspirin and call back later.
Skandia Recluse on September 12, 2009 at 11:33 AM
Maybe when he decided to run for Prez he reasoned that he did not know much about anything concrete but that it didn’t matter…he could surround himself with people who did. This might not have been bad approach if he had planned to carefully look over and understand the policies put out there by these ‘experts’. He doesn’t, and he doesn’t plan to ever do so. The end effect is that no one is at the helm and the country is being run by people we never elected and whose ideologies are far from main stream.

Obama can (and will) bend, twist and torture the facts until someone calls him on it, which will come eventually. His problem going forward is that he’s on the record constantly and his own words will be used against him at some point.
I know it doesn’t feel like it, but O hasn’t been in office long enough for most of his blunders to bounce back onto him. From 1/10 and beyond though, O will be judged on what he’s produced, which will be (IMHO), well, not much. The econ. will still stink well into next year and an int’l incident is most likely right around the corner – and we all know how well Obama handles foreign policy.
Remember, one of the reasons (if not the only reason) that Billy Jeff survived politically was b/c the econ started humming along and because he had the House Repubs to kick around.
I’d say that O will have a tough time following WJC’s lead, since he’s primarily and idealogue first and politician second. His political pinnacle came on 1/29/09.
