Senate to close ObamaCare loophole for illegal immigrants that media claims doesn’t exist
posted at 3:53 pm on September 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
I don’t get it. The modern-day Murrow told us last night that Joe Wilson was wrong, wrong, wrong.
If a man can’t trust Keith Olbermann to tell him the truth, who can he trust?
The controversy over Republican Rep. Joe Wilson’s shouting out “You Lie!” at the President over his claim that illegal immigrants wouldn’t benefit from health-care reform apparently sparked some reconsideration of the relevant language. “We really thought we’d resolved this question of people who are here illegally, but as we reflected on the President’s speech last night we wanted to go back and drill down again,” said Senator Kent Conrad, one of the Democrats in the talks after a meeting Thursday morning. Baucus later that afternoon said the group would put in a proof of citizenship requirement to participate in the new health exchange — a move likely to inflame the left.
Why would the left be inflamed? Putting laws on the books about illegal immigrants and then studiously ignoring them is a longstanding American tradition. Meanwhile, as expected, Wilson’s starting to rake in big dough from his outburst; a flash poll shows him actually trailing Rob Miller by a single point while the national media throws everything they’ve got at him, but expect Miller’s lead to go the way of The One’s bounce in the next few weeks as things calm down.
Pelosi’s going to try to extend the Two Minutes Hate by another minute next week with a floor resolution punishing Wilson for not apologizing profusely enough, I guess. A cynic might see it as an attempt to manufacture Democratic unity while war is waged over the public option behind the scenes; good thing I’m not a cynic. Oh, and on the very day that an unnamed senior White House official is calling Wilson “a pimple on the ass of progress,” former McCain aide Mark McKinnon is promising to donate to Wilson’s opponent because, see, he just can’t stand incivility. Exit question: Have he and Meghan McCain collectively uttered one unkind word about the torrent of “political terrorist”/angry mob rhetoric that’s been pouring from the mouth of the Democratic river this past month? Maybe they have and I’ve just missed it.
Update: Proving once again that Wilson’s entirely right to be suspicious of the left’s plans for illegals under ObamaCare, TPM sounds decidedly miffed that, ahem, “undocumented residents” won’t be allowed to buy health insurance. Fun Orwellian bonus: Aside from directly quoting Kent Conrad, the word “illegal” doesn’t appear in the post.

I keep wondering why ANYONE voted for McCain. Oh, wait. I know. Sarah Palin. That was MY reason. Prior to her, he was road kill. Still is, apparently. Clueless, and time to retire.
bradley11 on September 11, 2009 at 3:56 PM
I think Joe Wilson will end up being better off for what he said. I gave him some money and I might give him more.
BTW, I don’t care what Meghan says and I really have to wonder why it is even a topic of conversation. In the real world, most people have no idea who she even is.

So Palin and Joes “lies” lead to changes in the bill .
Orwellian.

Well? Liberals? Going to tell us how this is completely unnecessary?

So what does the Hispanic caucus have to say? Will the bail out on the bill if a verification procedure is included?
I don’t think this will survive the conference committee if it makes it into the final Senate bill.

They are playing games. The reason for this whole mess is to cover Illegals.

So when the left screams about the exclusion of illegals, how will they try to spin the ‘liar’ moment?
Vashta.Nerada on September 11, 2009 at 3:59 PM
I’ll reiterate: Joe Wilson doesn’t need someone to show him where his nads are and he’ll be easily re-elected.
John McCain, OTOH, can get Cindy to point at his since he seems to have lost track of things.

Congress can attempt to close the “loophole”, but the COURT’s will open it back up.
Its already been to the Supremes (who if memory served chose not to look at it), that if you make services available for citizens, you CANNOT exclude illegals…
California tried to do it, and it got struck down by the courts… same thing will happen here.

Seriously, this looks just like the “death panels” provision — deja vu all over again, complete with the same media denials that the original text had problems even though it was edited specifically to fix those problems.

This is not a victory, until they put the money up…

I think some people over rate the importance of the whole civility thing…I know Ed Morrisey said that Wilson was right to apologize, but he also supports Wilson. But I think the last few years in DC have just pretty much done the whole notion of civility in..I really do. I would be happier to see people less hostile and all that, but that is not going to happen anytime soon.
The important thing is that Wilson was right, he was telling the truth.

SKYFOX on September 11, 2009 at 4:10 PM
This doesn’t matter in the long run. Dear Leader will push for amnesty for illegal aliens and “presto” no more illegal aliens. And even if that doesn’t make it through Congress, just wait until the “we must provide health care for the least fortunate among us, regardless of their immigration status” stuff starts.

One minute before the bill is voted on, a junior ‘rat senator no one has heard of will insert a single sentence deep inside the bill that invalidates the closing of the loophole.
There is no way Ogabe and his pet morons will ever allow themselves to lose a few Hispanic votes by actually excluding illegals, and to be doubly sure they will press on with legalizing everyone early next year.
Bishop on September 11, 2009 at 4:10 PM
As much as I dislike our current President and what he stands for, I still thank the good lord every day that he won and not that pu**y McCain.
My advice to Wilson however is to not cave in and give the groveling apology they are demanding. He apologized once, not for the content but for the forum and the timing, that I can respect (although I doubt very much I would have even done that)and that should be enough. Stand firm and bring up the fact that they are fixing the problem they said didnt exist at every oportunity.

That’s correct, and probably what the Democrats are counting on — especially if Obama gets to replace one of the conservatives on the SCOTUS. Two federal courts invalidated California’s attempt to restrict taxpayer-funded services to U.S. citizens/legal residents on the grounds that such restriction violates the Equal Protection clause of the U.S. Constitution. The SCOTUS denied cert. on the cases, letting the decisions stand.

I’m no Palinite, but I’m really starting to hope Sarah Palin unloads on Johnny Mac and his fat kid soon. It’s time. This guy is — and always has been — part of the problem. He’s Ted Kennedy without the boat. I think he and his ignorant child are feeling the sting that even though the country has soured on Obama big time, no one is saying “I wish McCain had won.” They wish someone else were president, but not McCain.

These idiot lefties don’t really understand the fire they’re playing with in their effort to push illegals on the nation. Just touching the illegal issue is what killed Shrillary’s Presidential hopes.
If they try to pass anything that gives illegals any sort of benefits or legalization, this nation is going to absolutely explode. The Precedent wants that sort of chaos, but the useful idiots in the Washington junta are in for a very rude awakening.
