Reid: That Obama speech was a big, wet kiss to the Right
posted at 10:12 am on September 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I have a theory about this clip from Harry Reid describing Barack Obama’s speech on Wednesday to the joint session of Congress. Obama must have given two speeches, one publicly, and then a later one in private after all 535 members snuck back into the chamber. The one we saw featured a President who got angry, called his opposition liars, and said he wouldn’t listen to anyone who didn’t want to overhaul the health-care system along the principles he’s already espoused. Harry Reid must be referring to a different speech when he recounts the one that lauded Republican ideas on ObamaCare and offered an “olich branch” to his opposition (via Greg Hengler):
Allow me to point out the “olich branch” moments:
But what we have also seen in these last months is the same partisan spectacle that only hardens the disdain many Americans have toward their own government. Instead of honest debate, we have seen scare tactics. Some have dug into unyielding ideological camps that offer no hope of compromise. Too many have used this as an opportunity to score short-term political points, even if it robs the country of our opportunity to solve a long-term challenge. …
There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally. …
Everyone in this room knows what will happen if we do nothing. Our deficit will grow. More families will go bankrupt. More businesses will close. More Americans will lose their coverage when they are sick and need it most. And more will die as a result. We know these things to be true.
So it has to be another speech, in another reality, to which Reid refers in this clip. It’s the reality in which putting tort reform in the hands of a former executive director for the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association sounds like compromise. It’s the alternate reality in which “olich branches” come with instructions on where to stick them.

Reid is either really cunning or cognitively dissonant….
he seems to be trying to mainstream the Blue Dog’s being able to come home to the casual observer if you use whacked out logic….or he’s insane….

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will, eventually, go down in history as textbook examples of how NOT to be a House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader, respectively. I will celebrate the day when they, either individually or by Party, are defeated.

Why can’t Reid be honest, and say that he needs to take over private insurance so he can cut benefits and raise rates, because Medicare and Medicaid are bankrupt, and he needs the cash?

Politicians that that turn to the “partisan bickering” attack are, in most cases, just do so to avoid confronting some elses ideas. It is like neither side can come to the conclusion that they have different ideas and that some ideas cannot be reconciled. Some one needs to win, and someone needs to lose in the arena of ideas.
May Obama be the Detroit Lions in this fight.

I guess it’s official. The libs didn’t hear a damn thing we’ve been telling them this summer.
That popping sound was Reid pulling his fingers out of his ears, where they’ve been lodged since the end of July. He can’t pronounce “olive” because his tongue needs more rehabilitating after saying “LA LA LA LA LA” for six straight weeks.

The only way Reid and Pelosi can hope to get enough Democrat votes for this monstrosity is if they can bring some Republicans on board for cover.
That’s why they keep going after the GOP even though Democrats don’t need their votes. The only bi-partisan thing about this bill is the opposition.

Dingy Harry has been a dem so long that he has no idea when someone is insulting and demonizing the opposition. He has been embroiled in it for so long the obviuos escapes him, it’s kind of like a fish not knowing that it’s wet.
milwife88 on September 11, 2009 at 12:14 PM
Come on, guys. He didnt call “his opposition” liars. He called liars liars. Factcheck agrees. Politifact agrees. There are no death panels and there is no coverage for illegal immigrants. It’s okay for a President to say that people are lying when they are lying.
And he did bring in several Republican ideas. John McCain’s catastrophic insurance and tort reform. Considering the guy was elected largely on a platform of healthcare and he has large majorities in both houses of Congress, I think that’s pretty good.
What would “compromise” look like to you? It seems to me that places like this view “compromise” as “do everything we want, even though voters have rejected us”.
The left has given up single-payer and may give up a public option, even though their party has strong majorities. That’s called compromising. What have you got? What are you willing to give up?

Really? This is his version of extending an olive branch to his domestic opponents?
Isn’t this the guy (I mean Obama) bowed to the Saudi king, had a real cozy and friendly relation with Chavez, and couldn’t wait to personally greet Ahmedinerjack/Khadafi for their unclenched fists?
Can I treat Obama contemptuously, as obnoxious/outrageously as I can be? Maybe I will be better regarded by this guy. Geesh!
Sir Napsalot on September 11, 2009 at 12:40 PM
This speech was hyped as the presentation of Obama’s REAL plan… well… that’s what Biden said. Maybe the veep’s not in the loop.
Then again, maybe Obama hasn’t presented his own plan, and hasn’t read the others because he knows this isn’t about “healthcare reform.”
itsacookbook on September 11, 2009 at 12:45 PM
I can always count on Harry Reid. Like many leftists, but to a distinct degree, he serves as a 100% reliable meter of truth-antithesis. For example, what should have been gleaned from his comment that the “Iraq war is lost” was that we were just beginning to win. The reason he said what he said when he said it was to choke off the threatening and imminent narrative of good news.
If he says the speech was an “olive branch” then we’re only confirmed it was not only an utter attack (beneath its rhetorical flourishes and deflections) but meant to be, and equally meant to be sold as an “olive branch.”
