Great news: Federal deficit hits $1.38 trillion in August, a new record
posted at 5:17 pm on September 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
And believe it or not, that number’s “better than anticipated.” Much like how it’s “better than anticipated” that we’re “only” losing 200,000 jobs a month these days, after we were assured back in February that the stimulus would cap unemployment at eight percent.
The government in August took in $145 billion in receipts, but $256 billion in outlays led to an overall monthly deficit of $111 billion. That number is better than anticipated — most expectations were that the government had added $162 billion to its tab last month.
The record deficit stems from increased government spending to stop the recession and financial crisis combined with lower government tax revenues.
In late August, the Obama administration projected that the deficit for the full budget year will eventually hit $1.58 trillion.
Imagine how grim the future would look if not for the fact that our new health-care program will be entirely deficit-neutral. Via Greg Hengler, here’s Krauthammer posing a good question last night: If there are so many potential savings to be had in streamlining Medicare, why doesn’t The One start streamlining it now, prove that he’s right about hidden billions just waiting to be unearthed by more efficient management, and then demand passage of ObamaCare? It reminds me of the amnesty bill two years ago, which simply had to be “comprehensive”; asking the feds to prove their commitment to enforcing the border first, before talking about legalization, was simply unthinkable. We were being scammed then and we’re being scammed now, needless to say.

250 billion buck deficit under Bush was a sign of impending doom, that we were all going to die, that the nation was a hair away from folding up forever.
Now? Well this is no problem, we just raise the minimum wage and enact OgabeCare and soon we will be swimming in money.

I do not expect the September deficit numbers to be huge since September is a quarterly estimated tax poayment month. We will probably be below the $1.58T estimate, that is good in the overall scheme of things. Bad, if Obama starts talking about he is already reducing deficits and people believe him.

Generally $2-3. You might get a sale when it is 99 cents a loaf. I remember my mom buying bread for a nickel when I was a kid.
When cap-and-tax really gets going I expect bread will be at least 5 bucks, if anyone really buys it at the store anymore. We’ll all be growing wheat and corn in our backyards and making our own flour before too long.

And there won’t be a tomorrow because they keep printing money.
Its a viscious cycle of hyperinflation, stagnation, ever increasing taxation and stimulus.

You’re looking at this the wrong way. Since it was less than the “experts” expected, Obama saved us $40.6 billion last month.

Do you know how pissed Barry has to be right now… When he started campaigning to become Dear Leader, there was a huge push against the incumbent party despite the fact that W tax cuts had the economy rolling and flowing money into Fedzilla… Then he gets nominated, the Fed allows Lehman to fail, and the economic machine cracked before he could push his socialist nightmare past an American people who would have been too fat, dumb and happy to complain
Poor Barry, now you have to work…

Wow $2-$3 for bread. I was paying $3.50-$3.80 for the ‘quality’ bread 4-5 years ago. It has to be more than that now. I’ve never shopped at the specialty bread store, don’t know what it is there. (University town)
Oh dear, that might have been before WalMart came to town. Memory is failing, but I do remember the day that bread went from 20c to 25c ‘cuz my quarter wouldn’t buy the bread and 5 pieces of penny candy, and I needed another penny for tax.
I learned about inflation and taxes at a very early age.

It’s gotten even worse in these last few weeks
He’ll kiss me on the cheek and he’ll made a magic sign
He’ll say “What you need is Obama Potion Number Nine”
He’ll turn around and gave me a wink
He’ll say “I’m gonna have my Michelle make it up right here in the White House sink”
It’ll smell like Chicago, it’ll look like socialist ink
I’ll hold my nose, I’ll close my eyes, I’ll take a drink
I won’t know if it is day or night

But when there’s nothin’ left to grab
It’ll break my little bottle of Obama Potion Number Nine

It is against international law, and our laws for them to determine the price of their products, based on our dollar.
What they have done is say that their RMB is 70% of ours, that is they are 30% less then us.
No matter what the product is, they will always be 30% less then us. Even if they buy it from us for $1, they will sell it to another country for $.70, thus cutting out our chance to sell internationally and compete.
They have done this for decades to introduce products into our country…thus the steel industry, wood industry (yes they buy our wood and convert it to plywood and resale it back to us), many products. Once our businesses have gone “under” or lost so much money, they then have the market.
Their government has supported this predatory pricing, and ours has turned a deaf ear (lobbying money helps).
We have basically subsidized their businesses at the cost of ours.
And yes, it is illegal…their RMB should be tied to their monetary system, not ours.
right2bright on September 11, 2009 at 6:53 PM
…and any truth coming out of the legacy media/DC is also “UNexpected.”
leftnomore on September 11, 2009 at 8:05 PM
And except for several millions without jobs, the country’s still operating. How?
If these deficits keep going up, and not much else bad happens I guess I’ll join both the Democratic Party and the Daily Kos, as everything I know about free enterprise and the effects of monetization on the economy are all wrong.
I can only wonder if Dear Leader is pacing the WH floor asking Rahmbo and Aholerod “When is the economy going to crack? When?”

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: “Comprehensive ___________ Reform” means you’ll get maybe 10% benefit, and 90% garbage that nobody could otherwise propose with a straight face.
Comprehensive ANYTHING should only be plausible if incremental changes have already done as much as they can. There is no reason to say, “we must take this subtle bad with this obvious good” if you’ve been stifling the good.
