CBS poll: Support for ObamaCare up 12 points since last week
posted at 10:48 am on September 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
Enjoy it while it lasts, champ, because no one — including liberal Democrats — thinks it will. Last week it was 40/47, today it’s 52/38 with 85 percent of Dems approving of how he’s handled health care. And yet, even in an otherwise upbeat poll, only 22 percent think O-Care will end up helping them. 27 percent think it’ll do more harm than good and 42 percent think it’ll have no effect. Such is the state of excitement about solving the great “crisis” of our time.
CBS sampled 648 adults randomly. What do you get when you sample likely voters, as Rasmussen does? Something … different:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national tracking survey shows that 46% favor the plan and 51% are opposed. The survey was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The previous two-day sample, conducted Tuesday and Wednesday nights, found that 44% favored the plan while 53% were opposed…
Eighty percent (80%) of Democrats now support the health care plan, up from 72% in the previous survey results. Support among Republicans declined two points while support among those not affiliated with either major party rose by a single percentage point…
The speech also increased enthusiasm for the plan. Thirty percent (30%) now Strongly Favor the legislation and 39% are Strongly Opposed. In the previous survey, 27% Strongly Favored the plan and 41% Strongly Opposed. In August, those numbers were 23% and 43% respectively.
He got a small bounce in the number of people who “strongly approve” of him too, but he’s still below 50 percent overall. So there you go. Figure on him picking up another two or three points over the weekend as the media hype settles, which means at a fleeting moment when support for ObamaCare is at its strongest among people who’ll decide the midterms next year — i.e. likely voters — The One’s struggling just to pull a bare majority. Soon liberals and moderates will start freaking out anew over the public option and then the erosion will begin again. The only thing he can do now to keep Democrats from tearing each other’s throats out is to give them some Republican throats to tear at instead, which, as Karl noted yesterday, is why his speech was so partisan and why the media will continue to wet itself over Joe Wilson for as long as it can. The longer this Two Minutes Hate goes on, the more unified Democrats will stay. Hooray for “angry mobs” and their congressional ringleaders!

No Whole Foods around here! Just Brookshire’s, Wal-Mart, Sam’s, and one Albertson’s about 20 minutes from here. I know you’re joking, but yeah. I’d have to drive two hours to find a Whole Foods. :)

Hence, the HURRY HURRY HURRY nature of this boondoggle.
It’s no secret that he’s trying to cram this down everybody’s throat because the more you look at his like, brilliant, awesome, totally deficit-neutral-dood plan, the more they see what a gigantic piece of horsesh*t it is.
It’s a powergrab from Washington, and nothing more.
We were told if this didn’t pass by August that calamity would ensue. Well, it didn’t. We’re not told by the fearmonger-in-cheif that “more people will die” if we don’t just shut up and approve of the government takeover of 1/6 of the US economy. Just like if we didn’t shut up and support the stimulus that’s giving 8 billion dollars to ACORN, unemployment wouldn’t go above 8%. Here we are at 9.7% after his “brilliant plan,” and rising.
Sorry, chump, but Americans aren’t as stupid as you think they are. Hence, the resistance your Dear Leader has experienced. He’s used to crowds of fainting lemurs that will follow him anywhere, and having 80% of the voting block already in his pocket like it was in Chicago.
He’s finding out that hard way that America ain’t Chicago.
The polls will go back down once we resume focus on the particulars of his “plan” (that he hasn’t offered yet even though he said he would Wed. night), and when people are reminded of the costs to their own wallets, their childrens’ wallets and to individual freedom in this country. And we will. Deal.

Ogabe is doing it AGAIN here today in Minnesota, though one can only wonder why he would feel the need to convince voters from a high-tax blue state.

Let’s be clear about one thing. Obama is interested health care reform to establish a single payor system and that only. whatever spin, compromise etc. it is all geared towards his ultimate goal of single payor. The bill and everything about it must be stopped in it’s tracks.

I disagree that Joe Wilson hurt the Republicans cause. I think he called attention to the fact Obama was lying.Sort of like the one person who had the guts to tell the emperor he had no clothes.

Not “great” like “I have a dream” immortal great, but like someone comes off the podium and you say “great job.”
It was personal, passionate, articulate, punched all the right buttons and touched all the right bases, it unified his base, spoke sensibly to the middle and was delivered as well as I’ve seen Obama speak.
And it was, apparently, effective.
You may not have liked it, but saying it was a bad speech is simply sour grapes,
Bleeds Blue on September 11, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Not reading too much into it, but Obama did what he had to do and he — at least briefly — changed the momentum.
Bleeds Blue on September 11, 2009 at 11:27 AM
If The One is forced to get into a side issue and give people like Joe Wilson street cred, he doesn’t really have momentum. And he might want to stop elevating Sarah Palin to his level.

Just wondered if anyone else has the same thoughts I’ve had recently… Obama is in a huge hurry to pass his ObamaCare but it won’t take effect until 2013! AFTER the next presidential election. Meanwhile, I’m sure he will start collecting taxes during this time to pay for his ObamaCare. So…if he’s collecting taxes for the next 3 years but not providing a service with the money the effect will be that it will APPEAR that he has cut the deficit during his first term. Just like he “promised”! All smoke and mirrors!

Um..no. Sorry BB but the filthy liar did not change the momentum, that pathetic rant against the GOP was not a gamechanger as far as healthcare reform goes, the public is not clamoring for the Congress to seize the healthcare industry and deliver it to the filthy liar and his corrupt party. That’s all wishful thinking on the part of small-minded idiots who are too easily distracted whenever shiny objects appear.

CORRECT. It’s all part of the stage craft. Axelrod needs to portray him as being “liked and supported and popular”. He knows the media will say that he is, and for most imbeciles, perception is reality. Axelrod HAS to do it, they’re desperate, but what they don’t realize is that Obama’s lies have crippled his credibility. He’s toast.

It is ALWAYS about feelings with the left. Logic, common sense, and values are outdated ideals in the context of feel good legislation. Every society that goes down the road to socialism, whether it be NAZI Germany, communist Russia, or the Roman empire, eventually ends up destroying itself from within. It’s up to me, and you, to stop Obama and his Marxist followers from changing the fundamental values that brought us to be the greatest nation on the face of the earth.

So Obama claims that 87% of Alabama is served by one health isurance company and needs more competition. I would venture to guess that the public school system serves more than 87% of the kids in that state, and in all states. Don’t they need more competition?
WashJeff on September 11, 2009 at 11:55 AM
The fault lies with the repubs who have not come up with a plan of their own. they need ONE plan, ala Newt Gingrich, and shout it from the roof tops. The longer the repubs wait to have a plan of their own, the more BO’s plan will get more support because repubs are seen as the party of no and no plan of their own. And don’t tell me they have several, blah blah blah, no, they need one and push it, this is wimpiness to the extreme. I thought in August repubs will come up with a plan and change the talking from is BO’s plan OK to which one is better and people will side with the repubs. But no, the GOP is not taking advantage of this amazing opportunity. For all those expecting huge gains in 2010, with a bunch of wimps and pathetic cowards like the GOP, don’t hold your breath.

People, the general public, want reform, so they liked what he said…
But they won’t like that actual bill.
Everyone wants a unicorn in their front yard…I would love free health care, everyone to be taken care of…
But, when you see what you have to sacrifice, what is taken forcibly from you, and even worse, who is exempt (like unions, attorneys, drug companies, etc.) then their will be a different reaction.
Everyone loves a parade…except the guys who have to clean up after the parade.
Obama is a parade, balloons, clowns, patriotic speeches, but we have to clean up after him…

1) Yeah, four paragraphs in an 8-page (NYT transcript)speech. The truth must hurt, even a thimbleful makes you guys howl.
2)What, you expect him to deliver a 45 minute from memory? You think Reagan didn’t use one? This teleprompter stuff is idiocy.
3) Nice. Says a lot about you.
Whether you like the Obama proposal or not, those are simple facts. Rising medical costs drive the deficit, cause bankruptcies, hurt businesses. People lose coverage because they or their employer can’t afford it or because insurance companies weasel out on them. And people die as a result, 18,000 a year according to one study.
Again, you may not like his approach, but he has his facts straight here.
Whenever judging the effect of a public political appearance by the way, it’s not the number of people watching, it’s the coverage and spin that really magnify the effect — not just with Obama, but with everyone. Relatively few watched the speech, but everybody heard about it.
You think that people are as passionate and ideological about every issue as you are. In fact a huge chunk pay less attention and are working on a much more pragmatic level than you or I: “does this kinda make sense?” and “what will it do for me?”
What you saw as a massive populist uprising these summer, most people thought of as a bunch of ranters on TV, but yeah, “death panels sound bad. I’m against this.” Now they’re all “Look, the president says its good, and my friend Joe just got laid off and lost his coverage. Maybe this is good after all.”
Bleeds Blue on September 11, 2009 at 12:26 PM

Now is when conservative/libertarians need to hammer on details. Quote them chapter and verse of their manifesto. More of the GOP need to pick up on Palin’s points about IMAC, about mandatory coverage, about fines, about new agencies.
Drive it home.
Fighton03 on September 11, 2009 at 12:26 PM
You’re right, Bish. (shakes head shamefully) And the most compelling of all reasons–the passing of Ted Kennedy. I really think this got the American people into seriously thinking about how they can sacrifice for their politicians like Mary Jo Kopechne did. While many of us aren’t willing to give our lives outright like she did as Teddy swam like a squid to the surface, giving up our health, our private medical information and yes, our senile old Granny to their cause is the right thing to do.

Dana P. was right. The media were itching to write a comeback story, and as soon as they noticed one whiff of changed momentum they decided they’d manufacture the rest. They’re going to drag this thing across the finish line if they have to use their bare inkstained hands. The Dems were prepared for this, hence the oft-repeated “game changer” and all the other ridiculous assertions about that child’s tantrum of a speech.
The speech was meant to create a presumption of invalidity around the previous weeks’ collapsing poll numbers. “Oh, his numbers were falling? But that was Before The Speech.” Even if the numbers revert to trend in a week or two, it bought him that much relief.
DrSteve on September 11, 2009 at 12:30 PM

Rasmussen makes since. The speech was directed to the left. Check the independents. This shift is on thin ice and the majority is very weary, until a true document comes out of committee the numbers should stay right where they are +or-5. How long will Pelosi/Reid give everyone to digest the bill? 5 days like Obama promised?
One thing is for sure, the lawyers papering this thing up will write a bill so convoluted no one will know what’s really in the bill for a few days. Can the Democrats allow, the most important piece of legislation in decades, to sit on the shelf for long? I see a cram down a coming!
Atlanta Media Guy on September 11, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Maybe some conservative writers (obviously not Allahpundit) could fact check Joe Wilson’s statement. Even if some disagree with the delivery (debatable), the validity is indisputable. That’s why Obama’s original figure of 47 million went down to 30 million; Obama thought it would reassure Americans they wouldn’t pay for illegal immigrants abusing the system. It actually pointed out the lie that Joe Wilson couldn’t let go unanswered. If this point is driven home, healthcare as proposed by the Democrats is dead.
I also think Glenn Beck going after ACORN is helping. We all know the reason they and other Democratic activist groups are conducting the Census now is sampling, which is unconstitutional. I wonder if these were the arrests he was talking about.

the GOP has offered several plans. The MSM just isn’t covering them. Hannity has had a few people on who have read the bills they would submit if allowed. Ideas like tort reform, crossing state lines insurance, various health savings accounts and tax benefits. Many of the ideas won’t cost the taxpayer anything.
The liberals have blinders on and and refuse to listen to any of these ideas. It is single payer or nothing, no matter how you dress the pig up.
And no way was Obama’s speech great. Only the koolaid drinkers think that. It was an ok speech, didn’t offer anything new or really any specifics. Also fact checking showed he was basically ignorant of what actually was being presented to committees as a bill.

It’s my playmate! Hi, Skippy. You’re confused. Thousands of Patriotic Americans are gathering in Washington tomorrow to stand up for their rights and freedoms, like the Colonists did during the Boston Tea Party. It’s nothing like the game your buddies play. By the way, what’s Mom cooking for lunch today, Spaghettios? She’ll be calling you up from the basement anytime now.

I’m not crazy about the Repubs either, but be fair to them, a little, they have a bill and were waving it at Pinnochio as he said they didn’t have one. It has not been widely published, but is free market and tort reform driven and makes sense thats’ why you never see it.
Just like you don’t see video of Pinnochio calling Rush, Sarah and the American citizens Liars about two minutes or less before Wilson returned the favor.
I would have thought someone on Fox at least would have shown that but for some reason its Whitewashed.
What is worse the President of the U.S. calling American citizens who disagree with him liars or a congress critter catching him lying and calling him on it. Notice the Dims quickly put in the language they had rejected for months disallowing illegal aliens free healthcare?
they did it after Wilson called Pinnochio on it and after the Dims in House and Senate had repeatedly rejected the same addition.
Pinnochios’ words “they are lying”!

How could we possibly know if any momentum has changed? A sample of 648 people. We don’t even know if said 648 momentum has changed. Was the same sample polled earlier and that the percentages were different? And if so, why are we to conclude that 648 is indicative of a couple hundred million? That is insane. As are any and all polls done to forecast the thoughts of over 200 million adults.

There is the actual quote. Pinnochio calling American citizens liars by saying It is a lie and he’s right there’s a lie there HIS!
To cut cost care will be rationed and panels are advocated for just such a thing.
My mistake he did not say they are lying but,”it is a lie plain and simple”
It is not!

Wow- his supporters are more supportive now? Rally around the flag, boys. At least they are getting their stalwarts back, that must have been troubling to them.

He can’t make it to NYC for 9/11 services but he can make it to MN for a campaign stop. Classy as usual.

Obama always says that Republicans and his health care reform opponents don’t have a plan. He says that we want the status quo. This is patently false. The Republicans have issued a proposed framework and they have been batting around reform proposals.
Now, it’s true that doing nothing would be better than the Democratic proposals. But Republicans think they can do even better than that, by making individual plans tax deductible (just like employer-bought plans) and by making them portable.
For fun, I’ll point out Obama is using two Alinsky rules here.
The Republicans are a minority, so they cannot push through an alternative plan. In fact, this debate is decades old. Ironically, Ted Kennedy recently died, showing how old it is. But, truly, there is nothing new under the sun.
People will die. Foots will be amputated. Tonsils will be stolen. Families will go bankrupt. The world will end. Blah blah blah.

I feel for you. I live on the coast in California, touchy-feely brain-dead capitol of the USA. The only good thing I can say is that all the people closest to me hate Kool Aid.

Anyone can make polls show whatever numbers they want.

Three fundamental problems I have with Obamacare that is never brought up in the mainstream media (Rudy didn’t even bring them up today on The View):
1. New workers. New workers first entering the workforce from college or the military, not having an “existing” plan they can “keep” are forced by law onto the public plan. It is against the law for their employer to put them on any of their private plans according to the current draft legislation in the House.
2. Workers changing jobs. If you change jobs, you do not have the option of selecting from your new employer’s private options. You must go on the public plan. As 50% of Americans will be working a different job within 5 years, this is guaranteed to “ensnare” 50% of the workforce in the government option.
3. No way out. If you get on the public option and find out that it does not meet your needs, there is no way out. You can not go back to your private plan once you are out of it.
The entire legislation makes the government plan like flypaper. Once you touch it, you are there for the rest of your life.
All Obama and others talk about is “if you already have a plan you like, you can keep it”. In the overall context, this is very little comfort.

A “random” CBS survey? Did they survey 75% random Democrat party members and 25% random Republicans?
If so, I believe the poll results!

meant: this is guaranteed to “ensnare” 50% of the workforce in the government option within 5 years.

LOL… naw… they called ACORN for a list of “random” phone numbers… but all they could get was the Tax Help Desk…
