Videos: ACORN advising on tax evasion for pimps and prostitutes?
posted at 11:36 am on September 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
ACORN offered an undercover investigator for BigGovernment extensive advice on how to evade federal taxes. Not just tax evasion, but also welfare fraud and advice on how to cover a conspiracy to traffic in underage hookers, as the conversation continued to develop. Fox News has a headline blast on this story:
Officials with the controversial community organizing group ACORN were secretly videotaped offering to assist two individuals posing as a pimp and a prostitute, encouraging them to lie to the Internal Revenue Service and providing guidance on how to claim underage girls from South America as dependents.
The videotape was made public Thursday on BigGovernment.com, a political blog launched by Andrew Breitbart as a companion site to his BigHollywood.breitbart.com blog.
In the videotape, made on July 24, James O’Keefe, a 25-year-old independent filmmaker, posed as a pimp with a 20-year-old woman named “Kenya” who posed as a prostitute while visiting ACORN’s office in Baltimore. The couple told ACORN staffers they wanted to secure housing where the woman could continue to maintain a prostitution business.
ACORN denies everything:
A spokesman for ACORN, Scott Levenson, when asked to comment on the videotape, said: “The portrayal is false and defamatory and an attempt at gotcha journalism. This film crew tried to pull this sham at other offices and failed. ACORN wants to see the full video before commenting further.”
That’s a little contradictory. ACORN calls it false without having seen the video and says that the film crew tried this before and failed. Well, apparently they succeeded on this occasion. The video and the transcripts make this very clear:
Complete ACORN Baltimore Prostitution Investigation Transcript –
How do these ACORN community organizers express their concern for the downtrodden Salvadorean teens impressed into prostitution by this would-be madam and prospective politician? “They don’t even exist.” “Call them ‘exchange students’.” “Train them to keep their mouths shut.” Neither of the two bat an eyelash at human trafficking while advising them to evade taxes and prosecution for their crimes.
Despicable.

I’m not able to get the biggovernment.com web-site to open, and I’ve got a funny feeling that those videos are going to be up on youtube for less time than it takes between when the light turns green and the NYC cab driver behind you honks his horn at you. I’ve been trying to capture them with realplayer but for some reason it’s not working. Anyone who can capture them–do it quickly–they won’t be there for long.

Exactly. It’s called a “sting op,” right? If you aren’t doing shady, illegal things, then, it shouldn’t matter if taxpayers are concerned about the money they’re being forced to give you and test your character.
Unfortunately for ACORN, they failed. Boon for liberty and justice, though.

You have a valid point, but every generation thinks that they are living in the worst period of moral depravity. Man is by nature sinful, there are no surprises.
But – have hope in that like Michelle says, start bringing things to light – sunlight is a good disinfectant. I liked the cockroach analogy earlier in this thread too – except I want to use a cigarette lighter and can of hair spray on them.

Not to worry; Breitbart and Beck both have them and will keep posting them as long as necessary. Beck’s going to play them on his show tonight. Fox News will probably have them on its website forever. ACORN won’t be able to sweep this one under the rug.

But the MSM will sure try, don’t you think? That’s why I think it’s important for individuals to capture them. That way you can circulate them on FB etc. Because if youtube pulls them, and individuals don’t have them digitally, it’s much harder for them to go viral, which is what needs to happen.

y’all have got to be joking…RICO charges? Let me lay out the scenario and you tell me if I have it right. A couple of undercover journalists scour multiple ACORN offices, get turned down repeatedly (clearly a sign of absolute corruption) and the one place that falls into the trap is indicative of the whole? Let me ask you a question: do you seriously believe that the higher ups encourage illegal underage prostitution? That “let’s exploit young illegal women” is their misson statement? For people who run small businesses the idea that the people below you might not do their job right is a shock? Especially when they look to hire uneducated underpaid employees? C’mon.

Last I checked, that wasn’t a part of the UN mission statement either, but it seems to happen just fine within their forces too.

Shira’s attitude, that anything not run by the government is illegal, or that anything the government is not making money off of is illegal, sounds like an ideological position that Van Jones would probably agree with. If you think that your mission is helping people evade “the Man,” generally speaking, then I would not be a bit surprised to find activities of this kind to be prevalent in ACORN. Look, they’re all just victims of capitalism, anyway right? Bottom line–the organization is one big rat’s nest of fraud and corruption–in how many states are they under investigation for voter fraud? So we’re supposed to give a bunch of scum-bags the benefit of the doubt? Why on earth would we do that?

Don’t be shocked. This is just them getting caught in the act. ACORN has been well known to be a descpicable tool of the Democrat vision for America for a long time.
Over and Over again ACORN has been ‘busted’ by John Q. Public. Yet, under Democrat rule, absolutely NOTHING has been done about this sham organization of whores whom are pimped by the biggest pimp of all… Barack Hussein Obama and the Democrat leadership of this country.
Also, YouTube has disabled view counts on both video’s. Go figure.

well, pick up the ol’ pitchfork, buttercup. Between this, the illegal registering in Pennsylvania, the voter intimidation, and all the other varied and sundrie illegal activities by ACORN, it’s past time to join the actual grown up table.
And your insurance comparison is flawed. Last I checked, Blue Cross wasn’t offering to help you set up a brothel or sell young women into prostitution. Or anything else completely and utterly illegal.

How can they look their grandchildren in the eye when they ask “what did you do today, grandma?”.
ACORN Woman: Well, I helped a pimp and a prostitute import underage girls so that they can live the American dream here and become sex slaves. I also gave them tax advice and tips on how to conceal their underage sex slaves, but I did insist that the sex slaves go to school.
Grandchild: Wow grandma, can I be an underage sex slave too?
ACORN Woman: Of course you can, but you have to stay in school!

GunRunner on September 10, 2009 at 12:48 PM
The folks at the far-left radical activist group ACORN are embroiled in a financial corruption and cover-up scandal that they managed to keep hidden from their donors and political partners for eight years.
Now their deception has been uncovered for all to see.
But is ACORN’s leadership apologetic? Not in the slightest. “We did what we thought was right,” said the group’s president, Maude Hurd.
ACORN’s founder – whose brother perpetrated the fraud – also defended the cover-up, saying publicity would have given the group’s critics a “weapon.”
As if there wasn’t enough ammunition already to discredit ACORN.
The New York Times reports that Dale Rathke – whose brother started the group back in 1970 as a vehicle to help low-income people “take back what’s rightfully theirs” – embezzled nearly $1 million from ACORN back in 1999 and 2000.
How did ACORN handle the crime? By disguising it on the books as a loan from one of its contractors and letting Rathke’s family make restitution at the rate of $30,000 a year. (An anonymous donor reportedly has agreed to pick up the remaining $800,000 tab.)
Incredibly, ACORN kept Rathke on the payroll as a $38,000-a-year employee until as recently as last month – and only let him go when word of his fraud leaked to donors.
And, the Times reports, most of the people who covered up the embezzlement are still working for ACORN.
Actually, none of this really should surprise. After all, “fraud” has practically been ACORN’s middle name.
As Michelle Malkin wrote on these pages last month, the group recently settled the largest case of voter fraud in Washington state history – having submitted thousands of bogus voter-registration forms.
ACORN has been implicated in similar schemes in 14 other states – including Ohio, where a worker traded crack cocaine for fraudulent registrations.
Back in the ’80s and ’90s, ACORN’s tactics included trespassing, illegal seizure of private property, physical harassment, intimidation and outright extortion.
For example, in 1985, ACORN illegally seized 25 abandoned buildings owned by New York City and installed squatters as residents. A weak-kneed City Hall eventually gave the group title to the buildings – proving that crime can pay.
Amazingly, a large chunk of ACORN’s budget is provided by taxpayers.
Much of the rest comes from gullible foundations and groups like the United Federation of Teachers – which has partnered up with ACORN in efforts to kill Mayor Bloomberg’s school reform.
The Times reports that many of ACORN’s philanthropic benefactors have begun taking a close look at the group’s finances.
It’s long overdue.

Let’s go one by one.
Illegal registering: Now what ACORN’s problem was is that they created financial incentives for turning in paper and sent out poorly trained workers to do their work. Some idiots thought they wouldn’t get caught and they did. Again, go here: http://pajamasmedia.com/richardfernandez/2009/09/09/the-short-arm-of-the-law/. When somebody is making 8-9 bucks and hour and they get hired because no one else will, that most likely won’t lead to the best of situations
Voter intimidation: I haven’t heard anything about this one. I would love to hear more but I can’t find it on the internet. I did hear about black panther intimidation, but I’m sure you know the difference.
and my favorite, “varied and sundrie illegal activities”: yep, I love it when criminal activity becomes charges based on emotion. “I just know it, I don’t have any proof or anything but I just know it.”
Oh and if you didn’t get my analogy about the insurance, it isn’t directly literal. I’ll spell it out for you: just because I know there might be a few cases where things don’t work they way they should (insurance, ACORN workers being enablers) doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work in the other 999,999 times.

You have a great comment, and trust me, I’m not one on the minimum wage bandwagon. The point I was making with my “underpaid” mention leans more towards “under-motivated”. When a person doesn’t feel a passion for their work, doesn’t feel like they are paid enough (which for walking around and getting people to sign up to vote isn’t the pinnacle of trained expertise) and a financial incentive is created to cheat, well the answers speak for themselves. The higher-ups in the voter registration have no incentive to create fake registration cards, because there is no benefit to invalid registrations since they don’t become real voters come election. There were no fake votes in the last election. Only the workers on the bottom benefit.

BS. Fake registrations are open slots for people to vote fraudulently — either via absentee voting or by simply showing up and claiming to be the fake person. There’s a reason Democrats consistently block ID checks for voters, and it ain’t because poor people can’t get IDs.

And for the future I hope that Dems change their mind on the ID checks, because I agree that if IDs weren’t checked (like they are now), then it could open the flood gates to REAL corruption of the election process.

You want to be this naive, you go right on ahead. You believe the ACORN is just sitting there and Oops, these things accidentally happen. You believe that everything is just wonderful and lovely and that nothing bad ever happens. Over and over again.

Hamilton County election officials will meet this morning to discuss 19 voter registrations for people who may not exist, which would be a rare case of election fraud.
Board of Elections Director John Williams subpoenaed those named on the voter registration cards after similar handwriting and false addresses raised election workers’ suspicions. The sheriff’s department could not find them, he said.
The cards were turned in, Williams said, by someone affiliated with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), a group that represents low-income people.

elderberry on September 10, 2009 at 1:33 PM
And there never will be. Because the fraudulent registrations that don’t get caught can be voted just like it was a real person!
Unless measures are taken to prevent multiple-site voting (which requires eliminating/curtailing absentee and by-mail voting) and to require positive identification, then every fraudulent registration is a potential vote. That’s a simple fact, and declaring that no one was caught is just a way to say that the fraudulent voters got away with it.
Not all the false registrations were caught. It’s simply impossible to do so.
There are only a few states that check IDs at the polls. Why are you stating “like they are now” as if it’s done everywhere across the US?
Guess what? Since IDs aren’t universally checked now, those flood gates are wide open! And ACORN is one of the groups making the most of it.

I hope it wasn’t staged in order to get Glenn into a trap then use it to portray him as a fool. And I’m only saying that because this video is so outrageous, that it’s very hard to believe it’s real, even in post obama era… then again my middle name is Naïve.

weilbourbaki – Holder’s DOJ filing RICO charges against ACORN?
Let’s see…three minutes to get the coffee to stop coming out of my nose.
Another five to stop rolling on the floor laughing.
Then five more to find another keyboard to replace the one that’s soaked in coffee and snot.
And another minute and a half to wipe the tears out of my eyes before I could post.
That’s probably the best laugh I’ve had in twenty years.

You want proof?
I’ve sat across the table from ACORN while they conducted one of their shakedown operations. Pay them protection money and they won’t send a busload of people to your CEO’s house to threaten him and his family. Every single major bank in the U.S. has paid them off to keep them from protesting. Wells Fargo held out the longest and ACORN held protests at dozens of WF offices around the country until they finally gave them 2 million dollars. I know the person who negotiated that deal.
I’ve seen them show up for a state banking department hearing with their slick young white organizer leading chants by the poor black folks, and coaching the elderly witness “victim” on what to say. I saw them at a Senate Banking Committee hearing coaching a witness to blatantly lie about her own mortgage (my employer held her mortgage and had already modified it, but she cried that she was in foreclosure and about to lose her home).
ACORN was recently found to have registered and paid lobbyists, even though it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is legally prohibited from lobbying. Congress has refused to investigate.
There are a whole bunch of white people who are rich and others who have nice cushy jobs because of these shakedown operations and “housing counseling programs” and illegal lobbying operations run by ACORN, which always use the poor black people as props. And that’s only a small part of the whole ACORN network of organizations.

I feel sorry for the poor girl that had to dress like a tramp. Guess it was a necessary evil.

I absolutely agree with you. Surprising, huh? Now, we both agree that this is not a black and white issue. What I think is that ACORN is just like any other company or organization, but where instead of taking pens or taking a lunch break an hour too long, they cheat at their job. Which is illegal. ACORN has their problems but what they need is to restructure who they hire and how those people get rewarded for their job. I bet that a lot of salespeople given the chance would invent fake buyers if their commission would be bumped up. I hope that they do something to fix the incentives, but right now what they do is that they catch people who invent voters and report them to election boards. ACORN isn’t a perfect organization, and I do think you would be hard-pressed to find one, and I don’t think that they should be funded by the government as we plunge into more and more debt, but the sensationalist press about ACORN is getting a little ridiculous.

Clearly the answer to all of this is a pimp union.

Except that ACORN was founded, and exists, to collect political power through fraud and abuse. It is not around to serve people, at least not in anyway that requires sacrifice from its employees, founders, or benefactors.

What will upset our President is not what they said or how they advised this person, it will be that they got “fooled” and didn’t have the proper security in place to ensure that this wouldn’t happen. Our commander in cheif cited “Community Organizer” as his qualifier for President. He knows exactly what goes on, approves of it, and funds it with tax payer dollars (8 Billion!).
Question: If they are willing to do this, then how willing are they going to be to steel the next election? Don’t bank on a fair fight come next presidential cycle. The Dictatorship is in full swing.
MichiganMatt on September 10, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Are you sure about that? And…
Why do you think an ACORN director would copy voter registration forms?
Also, if more people register than vote, then the Dems cry foul and claim that racist Republicans prevented all these registered voters from voting.
