Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on September 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
One of the first tasks in solving a problem is determining its scope and size. Barack Obama has spent the last several months trying to create a sense of crisis by insisting repeatedly that the nation has 47 million people without health insurance. Earlier this week, I pointed out in another OOTD that this number from the Census Bureau — which is actually 45.6 million, not 47 million — included 10 million non-citizens, almost 6 million of which are here illegally, as well as about a third of the remainder who could buy insurance from employers but choose not to do so. Perhaps Obama reads Hot Air, because as Byron York noticed, that number sounded much different last night:
In his speech tonight, the president introduced a new number in the health care debate. Remember all those statements from Democrats, including Barack Obama himself, that 47 million Americans are without health insurance? That’s no longer the operative number. “There are now more than thirty million American citizens who cannot get coverage,” the president said in tonight’s speech.
But on August 10, at a town hall meeting, Obama referred to the “46, 47 million people without health insurance in our country…” And on July 23, he said, “This is not just about the 47 million Americans who don’t have any health insurance at all…”
Unfortunately, Obama still didn’t get it right. Twelve million of that 47 million are eligible for Medicaid and S-CHIP but haven’t enrolled, so the government already has a solution in place for them. Combined with the 10 million legal and illegal immigrants and those who make enough money to buy insurance but choose not to do so, that leaves us with no more than 14 million Americans who can’t afford to buy it. That’s a far cry from 47 million or even 30 million … but 14 million doesn’t make for good crisis-mongering.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Nice post, Ed.
As discussion and debate continues, conservatives need to emphasize that some amount of insurance reform is necessary–increased competition across state lines, elimination of state mandates for items to be covered, tort reform. But as far as the rest of what Dems have proposed (death panels, 53 new bureaucracies, and the like), there is no reason to justify all that for 14 million people.
Repeat it often: the number is 14 million.
BuckeyeSam on September 10, 2009 at 8:19 AM
Since 1993 the left has been bleating about 45 million uninsured. So they’ve been lying all that time?
Figured as much. Recently I noticed they jacked it up to 50 million. Now it’s down to 30 million? No wonder nobody trusts them.

Barack H. Obama is one of two things.
He is the most math challenged and dumbest president ever.

He is the most disingenuous and devious repetitive liar to ever hold the office of president.

I have a 25 year old without insurance because $60 a month is highway robbery. In his mind, I must ad. But the really funny part is that he resents the heck out of the possibility that he may be forced to carry insurance. I guess in a crazy sort of way, freedom still shines in our younger folks.

Beyond this blatant re-jiggering of numbers of the uninsured that Prez Obamao and his mighty minions toss around with carefree abandon, Stephen Sprueill at NRO points out another economic whopper in the historic speech. For Dr. Obamao, profit is part of the overhead of insurance companies.
Uh, no, profit is what is left over after overhead is paid for.
What is it with these fascist-socialist Regressives that profit is such a dirty word? Who would start up or maintain a business without the motive of profit?

Why is no one focusing on the SEIU connection to all this?
The reason Japan can produce cheaper cars is because their (semi) NATIONALIZED health care system takes the burden off the car makers.
The SEIU wants this public option because IT WILL KEEP THEIR PENSIONS HIGHER AND LASTING LONGER if they can offload all THEIR helfcare promises off on to the rest of us.
This is only the SECOND part of Obama’s Union payback.

14 million? Well, then who cares? 14 million people is nothing. Let ‘em die poor and penniless. They should have worked harder to be able to afford health insurance. What’s actually important is that someone has their facts wrong. That is what should be discussed. Not whether or not 14 million people can’t live in fear of getting sick. The founding fathers would most certainly agree – f*ck those 14 million guys.

I think most Americans resent the idea of mandatory health insurance. Especially when they realize it gives the IRS even more influence as they set up the reporting mandates of HR3200. That being said, if you are going to force private insurers to drop pre-existing conditions, you pretty much have to have mandatory insurance. Otherwise people will simply drop all insurance until they get sick and then sign up for a plan.

We’re going to give you a pass since you aren’t from around here, but we have a system in place already for the poor. It’s called Medicaid. And along with that many states have there own programs. In Florida, children can go on a state insurance policy. Stop pretending that these people are denied health care.

Obama also repeats the canard that 14,000 Americans lose their health care coverage each day…never a word about those who might obtain health care coverage during the same period. [Which many more would if the economy wasn’t tanking under the strain of over $10trillion, perhaps well over that, in commitments and spending under the Obama Hope and Change Express.
Want to get people health coverage, Mr. O?
Get the hell out of the way, and allow the economy to grow itself, with less not more government interference. Maybe make it less costly for those who actually employ people to actually employ people. Your job, and that of Congress, is to set the conditions for economic growth…like less government spending, less taxation, protecting our borders, a strong national defense, and sound fiscal policies across the board, things that are sorta in the Constitution. That’d be a helluva good start.
But, I still have to wonder where those 17 million people went…they seem to have simply disappeared. Soylent Green vats in hidden factories? Camps out in the desert? Economy got so bad all the illegals went back home? It is all a numbers game, like Reverend Ike used to run back in the day.

myrenovations on September 10, 2009 at 8:35 AM
I love how people compare it to car insurance, where you are actually insuring the other person and their property from your own possible mistakes. I am amazed at how many people fail to look into what is possible for themselves in the way of health insurance. But I am also amazed at states that only have two or three companies that can sell insurance. How the heck does that happen?

This an asinine strawman argument. No conservative has argued to abandon these people. Free market solutions–real free markets unencumbered by absurd state mandates and little interstate competition–and direct solutions are the way to go for these people.
Right now, Obama and the Dems are the ones who are issuing the all-or-nothing diktats. The problem that Obama has created is that he’s offering a Hobson’s choice, which, as we know, is no choice at all–a choice between a hag or nothing at all.

Obama and the Obamatrons still maintain that there is a mythical one-size fits all medical insurance plan out there, and a cheap one, too.
I pay about $300-$400 a month for health insurance. My former employer pays the other half. It is full coverage, $10 co-pay for office visits, 100% of all the rest, a $300 annual deductible, and includes catastrophic care, no questions asked. I could have gone for the generic $100 or so a month, with a huge deductible, and limited catastrophic care for myself and my kids up to age 25. Lots of folks do that, try to get a cheap policy and then hope and pray they never have to use it. Or try one of those cheap plans that have a huge deductible, or limited coverage. Had surgery recently, over $45k in costs, I paid $200 out of pocket. You get what you pay for or choose not to pay for.

I file insurance policies in the states for my company (we don’t sell medical, but we do sell life and disability). I can tell you that the Northeastern state insurance departments are incredibly picky. Yes, they are bogged down by crummy laws and regs, but they could certainly push to change them for the good of their citizens. If one NE states revises an insurance law to make things more difficult, inevitably, 10 other NE states will do the same. We simply cannot get some policies approved in the Northeast. If it’s that difficult for us, I can only imagine it’s 47 million (oops, I mean 30 million!) times worse for medical insurance companies.

Insurance is primarily regulated at the state level and each state sets it’s own coverage requirements, specifically setting out which medical procedures must be covered at minimum.
Depending on the risk pool a particular insurance company has, it decides whether to accept these requirements and sell insurance in a given state.
Saying it another way, it’s illegal to sell insurance in a state unless you are an approved insurer in that state.
Hence, we can only buy insurance from a company authorized to sell it in the state where we reside.

Insurance is indeed portable from state to state as it applies to coverage, thus one state’s providers will be paid on a policy issued in another state, even if that policy could not be sold in the state where you were treated.
The restrictions thus only apply as to in which state a policy can be bought/sold.
I’m sure one or more organizations have done studies along the lines of what you’ve described, and that would be interesting info.
You’ve got to figure that the tighter the regulatory environment and/or the more medical ailments/procedures a company must cover in a given state, the more uninsured you’ll have in that state.
Likewise, there should be fewer uninsured in states with more relaxed regulations and more restricted malpractice litigation rules.
