Left very, very excited that Joe Wilson’s challenger is getting donations now
posted at 5:15 pm on September 10, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’ve been watching them breathe heavily all morning and into the afternoon about how much money Rob Miller, Wilson’s Democratic opponent last year, has pulled in since last night. The latest figure is $400,000 — a “shattering amount,” according to one Democratic mouthpiece. How stupid is this? Let us count the ways:
1. Wilson’s become an instant political celebrity and grassroots love object. He’ll make big bank off this too.
2. His district’s been Republican for fully 44 years. He beat Miller by eight points in November while Republicans all over the country were getting wiped out. Given the way the political winds are blowing for the midterms, with Harry Reid’s own seat now rated a toss-up and one GOP pollster predicting big gains even if ObamaCare passes, he’s a mortal lock.
3. Like Moe Lane said on Twitter this morning, every lefty dollar that’s dumped into Miller’s lost cause is a dollar that won’t go to a Blue Dog who’s in trouble. Pour it on, suckers.
4. Wilson’s biggest advantage: He was right. The One does lie, and never more so than when he’s talking about health care. Even the GOP House leadership, while scolding Wilson for shouting, is using it as an opportunity to tout the Congressional Research Service report on ObamaCare’s impact on illegals. Goldfarb reads my mind in drawing a parallel between what happened last night and the uproar over Palin’s “death panel” comment: The left keeps kidding itself that the public’s paying more attention to the messenger or to the way the message is delivered — which was the whole rationale of Obama’s speech, after all — than to the message itself. They’re not. They’re worried about rationing and they’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the president is, in fact, lying to them, especially about how much this is going to cost. By all means, have Miller take that windfall of his and plow it into attack ads with the theme “Joe Wilson thinks Barack Obama’s being less than honest about health care!” See what that gets you.
Watch this clip, via Greg Hengler, of Lindsey Graham going off on Obama this morning and vowing to support Wilson wholeheartedly in his re-election bid. If even Grahamnesty’s this fired up, you can imagine what Wilson’s constituents are feeling right now.

Wilson better not have any career ending skeletons in his closet, they will come out soon if he does.
jp on September 10, 2009 at 5:21 PM
Absolutely. They’re worried about the legislation and the short- and long-term effects of it and not whether Obama is a liar or bad guy.
Focus on the stupid – and dangerous – policy and leave the stupid – and dangerous – man behind the curtain alone.
Defeat his policies and the curtain will drop on him (to mangle my metaphor).

Once the “furor” of this incident calms down in a few days, the question will be asked what was all this about. When will be quietly admitted is that the President was not telling the truth. This is Palin’s “Detah Panel” remark redux.
WashJeff on September 10, 2009 at 5:22 PM
It’s almost as if they really do believe that it is just a bunch of rightwingers that are against this plan. Even if that were true, I doubt it would hurt Wilson since he seems to be in a friendly district.

As Rush Limbaugh said, Wilson’s opponent only had $45,000 in cash on hand, and over $400,000 in debt from the last campaign. These emotional idiots are only retiring this guy’s debt. Nothing more.

Congressman Wilson, by his Freudian slip, interrupted a very nicely prepared and scripted bedtime story (Rahm and Axrod)
Just about when the nation was going to fall asleep, the good congressman blurted out “Wake up America, your president is lying through every breath and sentence”.
This is what irritates the lefties and the media. Their One’s fairytales were interrupted, by a huge reality check.
Schadenfreude on September 10, 2009 at 5:29 PM

And yet the MSM had nothing to say about Van Jones, who said things far worse over an extended period of time. Statements that were not spur of the moment emotional reactions, but were calculated for maximum effect to stir up racism in America.
But Rep. Joe Wilson is worth countless headlines and thousands of words of print ….. and it will go on for days and days.
Despicable.
fogw on September 10, 2009 at 5:32 PM
It’s a typical emotional reaction by the left without thinking things out. Had they done two minutes research they’d know Wilson would never be defeated next year. Second, if they could think clearly they might do a another two minutes research and conclude that illegals indeed are covered. But no, all it takes is someone to dare question The Won and off they go.
I surmise seeing all the video today of the churlish behavior directed toward Bush from over the years may have tempered the enthusiasm.

And liberals wonder why they’re always broke and demanding free things and help from the government. They throw their money away to political campaigns anytime someone makes them feel an emotion (happy, sad, anger, etc).
It’s really sad.

I was listening to Rush this afternoon and he mentioned that based on the last report, Rob Miller’s campaign had a piddling amount of cash and about $400k in debts.
It’s possible that Miller was in for another run at the seat just to bring his debts down. This quick infusion could help him change his mind.

Frankly, I wish that when he was told to apologize for rightly calling B.O. a liar, Joe Wilson said that he would apologize just as soon as B.O. and the rest of the Democratic party apologized to his constituents for wasting their hard earned taxpayers dollars on idiotic things like Porkulus, Cap and Trade, and Cash For Clunkers, not to mention the untold higher taxes and additional burdens that are attached to Obamacare.
As soon as they apologized for that, he would then apologize for calling B.O. a liar, even though he is one anyway.
At that point, you would have something of a Mexican standoff. And with the way things stand right now, that would be a good thing.

I also thought the Wilson remark worked out for the best, as it is now drawing attention to the Congressional Research Service report. Whether or not Wilson apologized, I think the focus on the report is great. I am glad to see that others see it my way.

Of course, if we are going to mock the lefty’s for sinking their limited funds into a lost cause here, then we shouldn’t be celebrating our sinking of funds into a won cause either.
I’m just saying…I support Wilson and if it turns out his seat is in jeopardy then I’ll kick a few bucks his way but not right now, not just as a trigger instinct. I can only help a handful and so I want to pick some that actually might need a nudge over the finish line. Guys like Adam Kinzinger in Il, to name one I can personally endorse.

I had much the same thought and I’d hate for an individual’s ability to contribute locally is thwarted by sending a donation to Wilson. But, Wilson said what many of us were thinking. Wilson brought the town hall anger into the Congress when all of his colleagues were simply sitting there and mindlessly clapping along to the filthy liar in the White House. If people can afford it, they need to support individuals like Wilson. If he has more than enough for his own campaign he can donate to other political campaigns.
highhopes on September 10, 2009 at 6:28 PM
Not to pick nits here but you are using the past tense. The filthy liar in the White House has continuously lied since he started campaigning. “Obama you are a liar” may be more factually correct. Whichever course you take, I’ll look for your sign on Saturday.
highhopes on September 10, 2009 at 6:30 PM
I don’t know about all that, Allahpundit.
Sure, the road is still tough for Miller but if he closes in on a half million in cash that is more than enough to run a solid month in an all-out media blitz.
On top of that, this is all predicated on the failure of the bill. Should the bill pass, that’ll be all the D’s sing about in 2010. Even if the Bill is shitty we will here nothing but how the D’s have been successful in getting work done vs. the “You lie” meme of Wilson.
In short, Rep. Wilson will need to still hope for Obama’s failure before he can safely not worry here.

Without going into too much detail, let’s say I’m familiar with Joe Wilson’s district. He’s fine. That part of SC is dominated by Lexington, an affluent rural suburb of Columbia that may be the epitome of GOP voters. (In fairness, HHI is in his district too, so he’s got money all over the district.) Think of Lexington as well-educated farmers. What Joe Wilson said has been echoed non-stop by those I know that live there and he’s being applauded. He’s genuinely loved by most in his district — he’s so friendly, he will talk to you like you’re the most important person to him. And most importantly, even in the worst of circumstances (2008), Miller still couldn’t beat him. If Miller couldn’t beat him then (in a heavily Democratic year), he never will.
