HuffPo: Another Glenn Beck target resigns from Team Barry?

posted at 2:55 pm on September 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

Well, not exactly: HuffPo says yes but it sounds like he’s merely been reassigned within the NEA. Anyway, it wasn’t Beck who took him down: He spent some airtime on it but all the legwork was done by Big Hollywood and the Washington Times. Progressive media won’t get the same Two Minutes Hate mileage from blaming those two as it will by blaming Beck, though, so expect the narrative to congeal very quickly around this being another coup for GB and Fox. When, oh when, will our president stop caving to pressure from the right-wing mob by firing Truther nuts like Van Jones?

We were remiss in not covering Big Hollywood’s story when it broke but you probably saw it at Ace’s place and elsewhere. In a nutshell, the National Endowment for the Arts decided to hold a conference call with artists to encourage them to “promote a more civically engaged America.” Among the four civic-y topics urged upon them: Health care and “energy and environment,” which coincidentally dovetail perfectly with The One’s agenda. Anything untoward about a supposedly nonpartisan agency pushing Democratic priorities on artists to benefit a guy who already has his own iconic cult of personality? I can’t imagine why, but funny thing: When Big Hollywood followed up and asked the NEA why they had initiated the call, communications director Yosi Sergant denied that they had — even though BH had e-mail proof that that wasn’t true.

HuffPo’s take, of course, is that Sergant was just a pro-service grassrootsy kind of guy sacrificed on the altar of Glenn Beck’s ego:

Glenn Beck has struck again.

Yosi Sergant, who recently popped up on Beck’s radar for his involvement in a conference call on national service, has been asked to resign as communications director by the National Endowment for the Arts, sources familiar with the move tell the Huffington Post.

At issue was an August conference call in which the NEA encouraged select artists to participate in an administration project dubbed “United We Serve” and led by the first lady…

The White House did not come to Sergant’s defense but says it was not involved in asking him to leave. “The White House did not ask for Mr. Sergant’s resignation,” administration spokesman Shin Inouye told HuffPost…

The Times published an invite [to the conference call] that Sergant had sent out, saying it had caught him committing “official dishonesty.” It’s a nice gotcha, but would the Bush administration have cut such an aide loose?

Lest you doubt that Sergant has an eye for propaganda on behalf of Our Leader, note that he “led the media effort for Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic ‘Hope’ portrait that Obama has credited with helping him win.” Exit question: Why would the White House reassign him at this point? Beck’s spent far more time on people like Jones and Holdren; it’s not like he or the rest of the right is clamoring for Sergant’s head. And removing him as communications director won’t quell suspicions about The One using all available means — like, say, school speeches — to indoctrinate people. Isn’t this just going to rattle progressives’ cages and make them hate Beck more? Or is that the whole point?

He [Beck] reminds me of a dorky history teacher I once had, he’s annoying at first but he makes learning fun.

It seems like they’re building an opposition by pushing folks in his direction. Wouldn’t it serve them better to give him no credit on anything unless absolutely necessary? Strategically, this whole line of attack seems ill-conceived.

But if the WH strategy is to pour gasoline all over the place and push somebody to strike a match, so that the WH can put it out, and take total control in the process, and look like a hero to the Commies, it’s perfect.

Between Beck and Palin, it’s like two dogs fighting over a carcass.

The carcass, of course, is the Soetero administration.

I mean this as a compliment to Beck and Palin.

tsj017 on September 10, 2009 at 3:53 PM

Perhaps credit for getting the ball rolling goes to Big Hollywood or Washington Times (I’m not sure) but you should dig up the Beck videos, Allah.

Beck, while not spending a lot of time on Yosi, did spend a lot of time, for a few days, covering the whole NEA scandal, including having the whistleblower on revealing emails and recordings. The most staggering parts were where the conference call host speaks of how to do this “legally”, etc.

RightWinged on September 10, 2009 at 3:54 PM

What’s the chance this guy has more dirty laundry than Jones, but it just hasn’t been made public? If he goes away, they hope, the digging stops. I hope people keep digging into his associations and affiliations.

Glen Beck = new Rush Limbaugh for the left

honestly I wonder how Rush likes all the attention Beck is getting?

jp on September 10, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Not speaking for Rush, he does it well enough for 3 hours per day.

But Rush just appeared on Beck’s show 2 weeks ago. Rush promoted the show On Air. It appears that Rush has decided to “Help” the FNC people by appearing on a bunch of their shows. Greta did her best numbers in forever when she did a 2 night exclusive with Rush.

I’ve been reading this at Big Hollywood and wow, people at Team Obama are breaking rules on a daily basis. There is talk that laws (Hatch Law?) were broken by Yosi Seargent and that tv star Kumar played a role.

Cass Sunstein’s “regulatory” agenda goes way beyond the animals issue. For example, talk radio will be attacked through regulations issued by the FCC.

That’s the beautiful thing about the right. It’s a shared struggle for principles.

John the Libertarian on September 10, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Rush knows that Glenn always recognizes that Rush is the one that broke into talk radio and started the whole thing. Sean also knows that, but I don’t understand why he never mentions Glenn. Glenn is a humble guy, always telling people about his past and his redemption. He is a self made man, but so is Rush. He reads continuously. I think he has trouble sleeping and so spends hours reading instead of drugging himself.
HE’S THE GUY! His radio show, as he says is #3. He is acknowledging that Rush is 1st and Sean is 2nd.
Some don’t like his presentation – I love it! He gets through to people. He makes it easy to understand with his blackboard, his diagrams etc.
Please stay safe Glenn, I don’t trust the left.

What is Bill O’Reilly going to do when he discovers that Glenn Beck is the left’s newest Bogey Man? For that matter, what will Keith Olbermann do when he realizes that Bill O is no longer the left’s Bogey Man? patriotparty1 on September 10, 2009 at 5:50 PM

Has the world gone completely mad? I think so.

FerfeLaBat on September 10, 2009 at 5:54 PM

This just proves that the Obama administration appears to have a bit of a chink in its armor centered around the types of people it is giving jobs to. I think up until now they were relying on a compliant media to not dig to deeply into the backgrounds and actions of the people they have working for them.

Unfortunately for them however the emergence of the new media like Drudge and Breitbart and the continued intransigence of FNC and commentators like Beck and Hannity seem to be upsetting the apple cart somewhat because they are doing the job that the legacy media wont when it comes to keeping the administration honest.

The result of all this is that the MSM continues to lose credibility with the public and the administration is being forced to take actions that make it look suspect, especially when it is forced to re assign controversial staff in the middle of the night in order to head off any potential bad press.

What is LGF and who is CJ?

Ltlgeneral64 on September 10, 2009 at 5:37 PM

Charles Johnson (CJ) is the owner of Little Green Footballs (LGF), which used to be a decent conservative blog, but has pretty much degenerated into the Cult of Charles.

Charles has decided that Christian conservatives are the greatest threat the world has ever faced, and is on a mission to drive them out of politics entirely. He has a special hard-on for the likes of Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and anyone else he deems a “hater” (i.e. anyone who doesn’t 100% agree with Charles 100% of the time).

Charles was outraged about the “death panels” being exposed in the ObamaCare bill because Sarah Palin did it. He was outraged over Van Jones’ firing because Glenn Beck exposed him as the communist tool he was. He and his crew are rallying around ACORN because he thinks Beck is leading the charge. Start to see a pattern?

He claims to be against extremists on both sides of the aisle, but he never seems to get around to criticizing the loons on the left.

It’s actually kind of sad to see.

Gator Country on September 10, 2009 at 6:04 PM

You’ve been remiss or dismissive about covering much of what happens on Beck — kinda like O’reilly was, till Van Jones resigned that is (claimed he thought Jones was a small fish).

Almost a beltway/big media mentality.

LifeTrek on September 10, 2009 at 7:08 PM

It’s a nice gotcha, but would the Bush administration have cut such an aide loose?

Are they implying that the Obama Administration is less loyal than the Bush Administration to those it appoints to public leadership posts?

Or are they saying that Bush people all did what this guy did, and none were cut loose?

I’m certainly at a loss here to understand them.

Glenn Beck describes himself in a similar manner.

I am amazed at all of the fans Glenn now has on HotAir. Considering all of the detractors who snarked on his style for months and refused to comment once on the substance of his work. Now that corrupt heads are starting to roll Glenn gets lots of love here.

I am surprised at myself tuning into Beck everyday lately! I am somehow less weary of his style than O’Reilly’s. I have never watched or listened to any of the other commentators as regularly.

I think it is the content. There is something new and shocking every day. It is unbelievable that Obama could do so much damage in such a short time. It is truly frightening.

I hope the rallies on Saturday have a strong turn out.
