Carlson: When did the Hopemeister turn bitter?

posted at 12:55 pm on September 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Tucker Carlson marvels at the transformation of Barack Obama from candidate to rookie President to … grumpy old man.  Nothing about last night’s speech reminded Carlson of the man who ran for the office on a promise of Hope and Change.  Instead, Carlson saw a man who has already turned bitter, paranoid, and inflexible after only the first serious challenge of his administration:

Never has a president been warped by Washington quicker. At times tonight, Obama sounded like an embattled second-termer with a 35 percent approval rating. What percentage of his speech was spent lashing out at his enemies, real and imagined? Radio and cable-television pundits, George W. Bush, former Congresses, unnamed ghouls employing “scare tactics,” whose “only agenda is to stop reform at any cost”—they’re all against him, Obama said. And they’re lying.

This isn’t how confident leaders speak. These are the complaints of a man on his way to bitterness. So soon?

Usually, a president has gone through a number of political battles before assuming the highest office in the nation.  Most hold executive office at another level before running for the office, and have to deal with policy battles and at least occasional defeats before entering the Oval Office.  They build a thicker skin, get a better sense of their strengths and limitations, and these experiences make for better presidents in the long haul.

Obama, on the other hand, has never held executive office in politics.  He has spent his short political life as a legislator, and not even a particularly bold legislator.  Obama was much more of a bandwagon man as a legislator, offering rhetorical instead of political leadership, and for the most part receiving nothing but warm praise bordering on tongue-baths from the media.

What Carlson sees is a man completely unprepared for the fact that he can’t sell refrigerators to Eskimos.  Whether that comes from a narcissistic personality or just plain inexperience, the fact remains that Obama has reacted poorly to the rapid disintegration of his own popularity and that of his policies.  Like a petulant child, Obama has assumed that the problem is that he hasn’t spoken often or loudly enough, which is one of the reasons that his speeches on health care have not changed an iota in substance but have gotten louder and angrier in tone.

Obama couldn’t sell ObamaCare, and now he wants to scold America for not agreeing with him.  Carlson is right to call this bitterness, but it’s the bitterness of a man who may have been told no for the first time in his political life, and clearly doesn’t know how to react to it.

Pretty soon Obama is going to need to start a war in order to distract us, and make him feel in control again.

Understand the sentiment, but that’s kinda like the whole birth certificate issue. At this point, Obama’s downfall is only truly helpful insofar as it repudiates liberalism. If he has a “personal” issue, he can still be martyred– the last thing we need. So let’s see him hold on as each one of his cherished community-organizer shibboleths are demolished.

I think Obama should start going after TOTUS. Afterall, TOTUS is the real cause of the lies, paranoia, and bitterness.

Cicero43 on September 10, 2009 at 1:01 PM

He loses this, he will have earned the sobriquet “Old Yellowstain”

But who will be the true author if this mutiny? A “Blue Dog” to be sure.

(My favorite book, BTW. The only one I’ve read cover-to-cover in one sitting. Twice)

JeffWeimer on September 10, 2009 at 1:28 PM

Watching last nights infomercial I noticed he looked positively evil gaze at the only point at which he looked srtaight at camera 1 and his eyes strayed from TOTUS. It was when he made the point “and seniors, you will not experience any reduction in services..” or something to that effect. Wish I had an exact time point in the speech to refer you to, I’ll take a peek at the vid and see if I can pin-point it.

Back in a minute.

Archimedes on September 10, 2009 at 1:28 PM

They were all disloyal. I tried to run the ship properly by the book, but they fought me at every turn. If the crew wanted to walk around with their shirttails hanging out, that’s all right, let them! Take the towline – defective equipment, no more, no less. But they encouraged the crew to go around, scoffing at me and spreading wild rumors about steaming in circles and then ‘Old Yellowstain.’ I was to blame for Lieutenant Maryk’s incompetence and poor seamanship. Lieutenant Maryk was the perfect officer, but not Captain Queeg.

Ah, but the strawberries! That’s, that’s where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with, with geometric logic, that, that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox did exist. And I would have produced that key if they hadn’t pulled the Caine out of action. I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officer…

Naturally, I can only cover these things from memory…

Obama has a tough goal. He needs to collapse the dollar and trash the economy and national security fast – preferably before 2012.

Any defeat — Obamacare, Cap-and-Tax — will make it nearly impossible to meet that goal quickly enough to eliminate elections and rip up the constitution. So he takes every piece of his agenda very seriously.

The fact that our president was 15 minutes late for a speech to a joint session of congress then he speaks for 50 minutes. Geez, I would love to have been at the Alphabet Networks Executive Offices this morning. Can anyone remember anytime that Bush was late for anything? I remember Bush’ staff ran like clock work.

I bet we don’t see Prompterbama on network television again until the SOTU in 2010. If we do, it better be important.

I still think if he wanted to be effective he would have sat in the Oval Office and looked directly into the camera at the Americans and explain to us why he wants to change an entire system for a small percentage of people who do not have healthcare.

Instead we got a whiny ass lecture about the inability of him and his administration that is incapable of selling a piece of legislation that he let Pelosi and her “dirty knee’d” Democrats write and are about to ram down our throats!

JiangxiDad on September 10, 2009 at 1:33 PM

I absolutely believe he wants it, though whether he can get it now is certainly open to question. It’s the whole point of all this. This is not about health care! He wants to run up the deficit so high that the solution has to include drastic defense cuts, as well as tax increases on producers and job creators. Once he gets the public hooked on government health care and the costs skyrocket, he will have ordinary citizens demanding to cut defense spending in order to avoid massive rationing of health care.

He wants an America in which every dollar the government takes in from “the wealthy” is redistributed to “the poor and middle class.” He wants college to become an entitlement and massive “national service” programs so young people won’t want to join the military as a means to get an education and a start on a career.

And of course, he needs to prevent the military from being strong enough to do anything about the erosion of freedom.

BO worshippers have their own revisionist history to lean upon.
100 yrs from now people will learn of the country-wrecking narcissist AKA Obama.
He will appear in the same paragraphs in history books along with the others we have mentioned here.

Why do Democrats have such a problem when you quote them using their own words? They call it smear I call it the truth.
Atlanta Media Guy on September 10, 2009 at 2:07 PM

I notice that narcisists deny their own words quite profusely, even when shown video of it.
They always have some other explanation for why they said or did what they did.

Badger40 on September 10, 2009 at 2:10 PM

TOTAL FAILURE! The headline of the night was Joe Wilson and he spoke the TRUTH! Hey O! The truth shall set you free! maybe you should read the bible sometime, it’s a pretty good book! – Atlanta Media Guy on September 10, 2009 at 1:45 PM

How dare anyone tell the truth about the BS that Obama was spewing? The emperor has no clothes.

SC.Charlie on September 10, 2009 at 2:10 PM

Try not to bash Joan Rivers. She’s actually a Republican.

Lanceman on September 10, 2009 at 2:04 PM

She may be, but her fake lips are firmly planted on Barry’s arse. She drank the KoolAid.

Wow. That’s even more cynical than I what have thought, but I am afraid you are probably right on target.

Never even occurred to me about the military angle.

I need to read some more.

tru2tx on September 10, 2009 at 2:07 PM

The one thing no one seems to understand is all of this stuff presupposes their ability to take our guns away.
I truly believe blood would run in the streets the minute they try to enforce any bullsh!t law ordering us to turn our weapons in.
Just sayin’.

Atlanta Media Guy on September 10, 2009 at 2:07 PM

This has been Beck’s point for some time now. If all you are doing is qouting the crap that comes outta their mouths, how is that a smear/lie/distortion?

The only way I can get there from here is, If you hurl their crap back at them and it sticks to their $3000 suits, that they’ve been smeared with their own excrenent.

Just sayin!

She Did?
She and Melissa are supposed to be strong Republican contributors.

Go easy on Obama. This is his first job.

Pretty soon Obama is going to need to start a war in order to distract us, and make him feel in control again.

My guess, Israel.

MarkTheGreat on September 10, 2009 at 1:23 PM

Under his inept, bungling tutelage he’ll make a mess out of that and be worse off than he is now. His best bet would be to cut his losses and avoid even greater problems.

As a Mississippi State University graduate and a proud cowbell owner / ringer – I respectfully ask that you never use that name in conjunction with my beloved cowbell. Use ‘artificial noisemaker’ instead.

Barry’s presidency is fascinating to watch unfold. It was obvious from the beginning that he suffers from an enormous, malignant, all consuming ego, but I really thought he would do whatever it took to keep his popularity in check. Now it would appear that he plans to handle HCR with the maturity of a ten year old- he may get some version of reform passed but he’ll never get back the center, let alone the right.

How will he square his failure in the 2012 election with his ego? How will he manage to blame it on Bush?

Yeah, I know- the “Martyred Messiah”.

Man his mom really did a number on this guy. He’s definitely an angry, bitter man. By the way…anyone ever notice how bitter Michelle looked too? Every time the cam panned on her, her face was a look of anger, and disgust.

Rush said something yesterday and used the words “…in his first term.”
That does not portend well.

Icarus looked to his father and screamed, “I shalt go to the sun and pluck it and mock you. For you are foolish to think my wings would burn.”

There was no father, but emptiness.

He said to no one in particular, “Father, look how I mock those who challenge me! I shall pluck the sun and then you shall see what you have withheld from me!”

After listening to his pitiful tribute to Ted Kennedy at the end of his speech, the same thought occured to me…

The emperor has no close.
