Video: DeMint challenges Obama to line-by-line review of ObamaCare
posted at 8:48 am on September 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Jim DeMint gave Greta van Susteren a preview of Barack Obama’s speech tonight in front of the joint session of Congress, and a failing grade almost 24 hours in advance. Why? DeMint explains that Obama thinks he can fix everything with “just words,” but that Congress needs something a lot more substantial than just another sales pitch. DeMint’s tired of pitches, generalities, and ambiguities. It’s time to get down to specifics, which DeMint believes Obama cannot defend — and perhaps doesn’t even know (via The Right Scoop):
But I want to hear him defend his bill. I want him to open up the house bill that was passed and actually point to sections…and say it is in there, read it… I don’t want to hear any generalities, I don’t want to hear any more false promises… He needs to defend his plan and not just criticize those of us who are presenting alternatives.
Van Susteren mentions a promise Obama made to take Congress through the health-care reform bill line by line, and asks DeMint if he’d do that with Obama. DeMint says he’d gladly do it, but one has to wonder who would be the sherpa and who would be the novice in that arrangement. Will Obama speak in generalities tonight in order to make a sales pitch or just out of ignorance of the details?

I’m voting for generalities. He has been very consistent with being vague.
therightscoop on September 9, 2009 at 8:50 AM
oops. I meant generalities for both sales pitch and ignorance. That’s just his style.
therightscoop on September 9, 2009 at 8:51 AM
“Now let me be clear…..(insert platitudes and the salesman pitch)”
The majority of the people don’t have an issue with the concept of tweaking our health care system to make it better. We have a fear of another government takeover of our liberties. Why do we have that fear? BECAUSE IT’S IN THE DAMN BILL. Maybe Obama will read it someday.

That would be wicked awesome. Pay per view worthy.

I wish that tonight, the Republican party, when they disagree with him or he starts telling his lies, turns the room into the British House of Commons and tears him up. I want to hear booing, heckeling, and see someone stand up and challenge him on his lies. That would be worth watching.
Other than that I am looking forward to the live open thread. See y’all there!!!
milwife88 on September 9, 2009 at 8:54 AM
Line-by-line is exactly what is needed. It doesn’t matter what Obama says, the only things that matter are the words that are written within the currently proposed legislation. Obama will lie, obfuscate, do a soft shoe dance then implement the same socialist healthcare manifesto he’s been pushing since the beginning. Agree with nothing he says until you see it in writing or have it explained to you. If you do otherwise, you do it at your own peril.
rplat on September 9, 2009 at 8:54 AM
I would like to see every page of this bill read into the record….every last word of it.

Every time obama opens his mouth, it is clear that he knows nothing about healthcare and nothing about the bill(s) he’s trying to ram through.

I think I can summarize the speech tonight:
kingsjester on September 9, 2009 at 8:55 AM
“As I’ve said before, and uh uh, let be clear on this, duh uh, I am going to be as vague and ambiguous as possible. If you don’t understand me, well, C’MOWON! I MEAN… IT’S LIKE… YOU KNOW… ah hah hah.. it’s because I don’t look like those other presidents on dollar bills.”
bloviator on September 9, 2009 at 8:56 AM
Well, finally.
I was wondering when SOMEone would require Obama to provide that “line by line” (so-called, review) rendition of this monster.
Which, by the way, really should be covered live by national news. For as long as it takes.
Lourdes on September 9, 2009 at 8:56 AM
The President must speak in generalities. All the specifics are ugly. According to the plan, Americans will be forced to buy coverage or pay a penalty. Who would vote for that?!
ROCnPhilly on September 9, 2009 at 8:57 AM
Yes.
KS Rex on September 9, 2009 at 8:57 AM
Generalities, without a doubt.
The only time he ever gets specific is perhaps when choosing which photos of himself to publish on his website that day.

One wonders why DeMint is not giving the GOP response?
DeMint points out that Obama’s ego thinks his handy TOTUS can absolve all the doubts on health care in one speech. I say the HOP should walk out on Obana midway through the speech. They know it’s going to be BS anyway.
cubachi on September 9, 2009 at 8:57 AM
Ogabe won’t be speaking out of ignorance of the facts, he will be stone-cold lying. Don’t tell me that the circle-jerk he had with the Congressional ‘rats yesterday was to inform himself, it was a strategy session to find the best way to subvert the will of the American people.
The problem for Ogabe is that he really does think that all Americans are as deluded and stupid as the people who voted for him and still support his dope-headed schemes.
Bishop on September 9, 2009 at 8:59 AM
Obama will get right on that, right after he “goes through the federal budget with a scalpel”.
LibTired on September 9, 2009 at 9:01 AM
Yes, only it’s the DNC and the Obama campaign dolluhhhrrs that should pay the audience to watch it. Though that’d likely establish yet another money-laundering rig for ACORN, unfortunately.
Seriously, no citizen should be charged to watch this but it SHOULD be televised. And Obama should be required to engage in this, for as long as it takes, just stand there and answer questions “line by line” as to this legislation, if it even exists or doesn’t, because so far, when criticised about it, he and Pelosi, et al. have denied there is even A bill. But they’re going to pass “it”!
Lourdes on September 9, 2009 at 9:01 AM
It will be all “I, me, my” and empty rhetoric, driven by an inflated belief in his own eloquence and grandeur.

bloggless on September 9, 2009 at 9:01 AM
Let me try to channel my inner Obama:
“To be perfectly clear, some might say that we need to examine this crucially important legislation line by line. But I say we must not become bogged down by these mere distractions at a time when the unemployed are losing their health insurance every day. We must pass the Democratic bill immediately or else our poor will be drowned by surging sealevels of overheated medical costs.”

Of course he’ll be speaking in generalities. And any specifics he goes into will be complete BS. What I do hope is that the GOP without being overly obnoxious or rude jeers him whenever he smears them(and you know he will). If Obama dares to repeat the lie from his Labor Day speech that Republicans have offered no alternatives, don’t let him get away with it.

In his message tonight Obama will say whatever his focus groups have told him that people want to hear. Then he will continue to pressure Congress behind the scenes to pass the far left version of “health insurance reform” and attempt to convince the American people that the bill corresponds exactly with what he said he wanted.
Remember that all the talk about rationing, death panels, illegal immigrants being covered are just lies from radical right-wing conservative terrorists being paid by the insurance companies. I don’t know about you, but I’m still waiting for my check. Has anybody out their received their check yet?

10,000 US Physicians Appeal Directly to Their Senators
Today, All 100 US Senators Will Be Listening to Physicians When They Deliver The “US Physicians Appeal” to Capitol Hill
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As Congress returns to session this morning, physicians will don their white coats and deliver the “US Physicians Appeal,” signed by over 10,000 physicians from across the US, directly to all 100 Senators at their Capitol Hill offices. The Appeal requests that policy makers include frontline working physicians in national healthcare strategy and pledges physicians’ commitment to true healthcare reform focused on the real sources of spiraling costs. Physicians leveraged the power of social media by using Sermo, the largest online physician community to make their voices heard and take an active role in the debate.
US physicians have a unique perspective on the systemic changes needed because they are on the forefront of care every day – in between patients, hospitals, Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance companies. Physicians more than any stakeholder group understand the need for pragmatic reform, not politically negotiated reform; and they aren’t wasting any time in telling lawmakers they must be included for solutions to work.
The Appeal will be hand delivered by physicians directly to all 100 Senators on Capitol Hill today, September 8, with A PRESS AVAILABILITY to include doctors and Dr. Daniel Palestrant taking place in Senator Tom Coburn’s (R-OKLAHOMA) office – Russell Senate Building/Room 172-at 230p EST where doctors will formally hand over the “US Physicians Appeal” for lawmakers’ consideration. Media is welcome*
“With the Appeal physicians are seeking participation from every member of the US Senate to work with us on bridging a communication gap dominated by the influence of special interests. Through an online forum lawmakers can discuss ideas and developments in the healthcare reform debate, in real time. If the physician voice is loud enough, it will be heard,” states Dr. Daniel Palestrant, Sermo CEO.
Senator Tom Coburn, (R-Oklahoma) a practicing physician himself, is the first to engage with physicians on Sermo, posting about tort reform and the establishment of expert panels to review medical disputes; and on the formation of independent health courts to determine penalties rather than a trial by jury. “My desire is to receive and pass on concerns and ideas to the politicians who are shaping the direction of our profession,” said Dr. Coburn.
Sermo is where over 110,000 physicians are using the power of social media to drive better patient care and have their voices heard by supporting the “US Physician’s Appeal”. By utilizing the Sermo platform, the physician community and lawmakers can dialogue to work together in bringing about meaningful, effective change. Lawmakers are invited to post questions, enter discussion topics and provide updates directly to the largest physicians-only online network.
Real time polling of physician opinion is a trademark of Sermo’s technology and provides insight for participants who engage. More than 2200 physicians have weighed in on Dr. Coburn’s post last week with their thoughts and ideas on how to make health care reform possible.
After the Appeal delivery, Senators will receive a call asking them to engage directly with their own physician constituency in the largest online physician community on Sermo – and address the real issues driving the healthcare crisis. With so much at stake, getting every perspective is critical to having an informed debate. The media and the public can follow doctors and lawmakers progress with the “US Physician’s Appeal” on http://www.sermo.com/reform.
According to recent polling on Sermo, true healthcare reform will only succeed IF:
1. Tort and malpractice laws are reformed;
2. Billing is streamlined and pricing made transparent, ending systemic support of the AMA owned billing codes (CPT Codes);
3. The insurance industry is reformed;
4. Payment systems are simplified so they align with the growing need for preventive medicine.
About Sermo:
Founded in 2006, by Dr. Daniel Palestrant, Sermo represents the US physician’s community and is the largest, physicians-only online network where doctors go to ask and answer questions of each other, and share medical observations from their daily practice, revolutionizing the way doctors collaborate across the United States. Sermo is a key source of exclusive physician information, especially as the US health care reform debate continues.
Dr. Palestrant is a recognized, nonpartisan voice who speaks on behalf of physicians nationwide. Modern Physician recently named him one of the country’s “50 Most Powerful Physicians”, and BusinessWeek has named Sermo one of the “Top 50 Tech Startups” globally. He is an active participant in the Sermo community and he brings a unique voice and the unparalleled opinions and views of the Sermo network of doctors to interviews.

By foolishly trying to reduce all objections to healthcare reform to the malevolence of obstructionist Republicans, Democrats have managed to destroy the national coalition that elected Obama and that is unlikely to be repaired. If Obama fails to win reelection, let the blame be first laid at the door of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who at a pivotal point threw gasoline on the flames by comparing angry American citizens to Nazis.

The problem is that there are five different HC bills running around out there, and they all share the same characteristic of having very ambiguous language describing how things will work.
Then of course you have the President himself getting ready to offer up his own version. Of course no one will be allowed to fully read or debate any of these bills because the ‘rat-controlled Congress has decided to exercise the Nookyaler Option and vote on something ASAP.

One reference in this speech saying those who oppose the bill arent smart enough to understand the bill and have been fed misinformation and disinformation and he fails for the entirety of his administration.
Present your case Obama. If Obamacare is good enough the people will want it. Do not continue to use the elitist rhetoric on Americans and send your attack shills into the media to bash conservative ideology. There is no turning back from the damage Obama has already caused by this behavior. We will not let it be forgotten.

Both. He can’t speak intelligently about the details but, more importantly, he loses support when the discussion gets into specifics. Everybody is for good healthcare just as they would generally support puppies. It’s only when the details get exposed and one finds that the bill adds trillions in debt, funds abortions, and creates government bureaucracies (aka death panels) that things erode.
Tonight’s speech is a sales pitch to make us so enthralled with Obamacare that we march on the Capitol and demand they immediately seize the healthcare industry for the good of poor Americans. He can’t do that while explaining the mechanics of the proposal.
