Video: California pol literally in bed with lobbyists; Update: Duvall resigns
posted at 2:58 pm on September 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Nothing says family values like sleeping with two lobbyists, neither of them your wife, and bragging about your sexual conquests at a California Assembly committee meeting. Michael Duvall (R), who represents conservative Orange County, not only is one of the most indiscreet politicians in recent memory, but he’s not too bright, either. The affairs came to light yesterday because Duvall bragged about them in front of a microphone that turned out to be live:
Freshmen legislators arriving in Sacramento receive advice from veteran politicians about the intricacies of working in California’s capital. One of those tips is to remember that microphones broadcasting legislative debates can also capture embarrassing, career-ending personal admissions if a politician isn’t careful. Michael D. Duvall, Orange County’s 72nd Assembly District representative, must have forgotten the warning.
In July–two days after Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Republican leader Sam Blakeslee put Duvall on the Rules Committee that oversees member ethics–the second-term, conservative, Republican assemblyman sat in a public hearing and vividly described lewd details about his trysts with a female lobbyist whose clients had business before another committee on which Duvall sits.
How explicit did Duvall get with his colleague? Way past the “ick” stage, all the way to “summer-camp liar,” except it is apparently true:
“She wears little eye-patch underwear,” said Duvall, who is married with two children. “So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And so, we had made love Wednesday–a lot! And so she’ll, she’s all, ‘I am going up and down the stairs, and you’re dripping out of me!’ So messy!” …
“So, I am getting into spanking her. Yeah, I like it. I like spanking her. She goes, ‘I know you like spanking me.’ I said, ‘Yeah! Because you’re such a bad girl!’” …
But Duvall wasn’t content to just share one adulterous tale at the July 8 committee hearing. He referenced a second, simultaneous affair with another woman. He seemed amused that he was cheating on both his wife and a mistress.
“Oh, yeah, Sher, Shar, Shar,” Duvall said. “Oh, she is hot! I talked to her yesterday. She goes, ‘So are we finished?’ I go, ‘No, we’re not finished.’ I go, ‘You know about the other one [Barsuglia], but she doesn’t know about you!’”
Good Lord.
The video above shows Dave Lopez of KCAL-9 (not KCBS, as the OC Register erroneously reported) chasing Duvall through the capital building in Sacramento. For a man who likes to share intimate details of his sexual conquests, Duvall got suddenly shy when he saw Lopez. I suspect he won’t be able to avoid his wife, and his other mistress, for that matter, with as much alacrity as Duvall shows here.
This is about as corrupt as it gets. Two lobbyists who do business with Duvall’s committees share sexual favors with a married man, who then brags about it to his buddies as though it’s no big deal. It’s corruption on both a personal and public scale. Duvall needs to go, regardless of which party he represents in the Assembly, if for no other reason than the basis of sheer stupidity in thinking that the microphone inches away from his mouth might not be live.
Addendum: As an aside, one of the most embarrassing tasks as a manager for me involved this kind of idiotic indiscretion in a call center. One of my female employees had a very audible conversation with a friend on the phone (on a recorded line, no less) with graphic descriptions of her sexual activities from the previous weekend, graphic descriptions of her own genitalia, and so on — for more than ten minutes. It’s difficult to understand what prompts people into these kinds of conversations, but they do occur, to the discomfort of everyone around them.
Update: I didn’t mean to play Name That Party, but Duvall is a Republican. Sorry about that.
Update II: Never has a man more needed to spend some time with his family:
I am deeply saddened that my inappropriate comments have become a major distraction for my colleagues in the Assembly, who are working hard on the very serious problems facing our state. I have come to the conclusion that it would not be fair to my family, my constituents or to my friends on both sides of the aisle to remain in office. Therefore, I have decided to resign my office, effective immediately, so that the Assembly can get back to work.
It wasn’t the comments that was inappropriate, Mr. Duvall.
Update III: The LA Times covers the story here. One reader e-mailed me and asked the following question:
Is it not relevant and is it also not worthy to note in your Hot Air post that the CA Assembly-man whom Mike Duvall was speaking with should also be subject to an Ethics Committee investigation?
That’s not a bad point. Duvall admitted to his colleague (er, bragged) in July that he was bedding lobbyists with business before his committee. That should have prompted a report to the Assembly’s ethics committee immediately, not two months later after the media broke the story. The other Assemblyman in that video should be facing an inquiry as well.

Blowback

What’s with the reporter talking about protecting his source so they blurred the guy out and wouldn’t say what meeting it was at- wouldn’t it be fairly easy to know what meeting it was based on the room and then go from public records to get a seating chart to find the guy’s identity?
I doubt that’s doing much to protect their source! That seemed rather odd.

Wow is that really all lobbyists do these days?
“I’ll f*ck you good if you support x”
And these desperate f*cks take it!? How desperate do you have to be to sleep with a lobbyist that’s lobbying your own committee? And how desperate do you have to be to do your ‘lobbying’ on your damn back?
ernesto on September 9, 2009 at 3:36 PM
I don’t beleive it is true. I think he made it up. The reason is because he states she was dripping while going up and down the stairs. Well, I question that because don’t they have an elevator? Why would she be going up and down the stairs, when I am sure anyone would use the elevator. I think he is fantasizing here.

At least McGrevey and Spitzer had the decency to resign. When are Sanford, Ensign and Vitter going to go?
And, as long as we’re talking about dead Senators, how about your favorite statutory rapist Strom Thurmond?

Put them in a room with a lobbyist and when they come out their term is over. Term limits.

Blech.
This guy’s 54? He looks like he’s pushing 70.
What woman in her right mind would have sex with such an ugly, fat, obnoxious loser? If everybody else in Sacramento knew what type of guy he was — a gross blowhard who’s always boasting about his sexual conquests to anybody who’ll listen — what were these women thinking? No job is worth lowering yourself that much.
I hope he loses his seat — both literally and figuratively. He should be booted from the legislature and his wife should divorce his sorry a$$.
AZCoyote on September 9, 2009 at 3:41 PM
High mileage.
Mary in LA on September 9, 2009 at 3:43 PM
The lobbyist runs around and brags to her employer and other lobbyists that she has special influence with Assemblyman X. Assemblyman X is a jerk who probably hasn’t slept with his wife in 10 years, so he gets happy. These relationships get cultivated over time, sometimes two or three years pass before the “favors” get called in, and by that time Assemblyman X doesn’t even realize he has traded his vote for sex. Then the lobbyist gets a fat bonus check from her employer for delivering the vote they wanted.
Of course this is tantamount to prostitution, but it’s never that blatant and they all rationalize it as being part of the job, or power being the ultimate aphrodisiac, or some other bullshit.
rockmom on September 9, 2009 at 3:43 PM

There wasn’t anything decent about either one.
McGrevey dragged his poor wife up to the podium with him and had her stand there like his supportive wife as he described his awesome gayness to the folks in New Jersey.
Doesn’t get any lower than that.

pcpower1 on September 9, 2009 at 3:45 PM
One of his lobbyist consorts appears perhaps to be Heidi Barsuglia. Her photo is on google images and she is connected with Californians against Waste, an environmental group.
She’s a cute young blonde and just proves that while the packaging may be nice, the contents may be putrid. These two women, who have no soul and sell their bodies for political payoffs, are really no different than prostitutes, and the Duvall politician guy is worse than a john cuz he will probably go against the wishes of the citizens he represents, just so that he can get more sex. Disgusting all the way around.

Jper on September 9, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Not that you don’t have a point, but McGreevey put his boyfriend on the state payroll as director of homeland security. I don’t recall Sanford or Ensign or Vitter putting their mistresses on a government payroll. Eliot Spitzer was using prostititutes, which is a crime in New York, while he was Attorney General.
That being said, I think all those Republicans should resign too. I knew David Vitter’s chief of staff when he was in the House and she would never have put up with that crap.

fogw on September 9, 2009 at 3:50 PM
People who speak of philandering cheaters in terms of their political affiliations are really twisting the issue to fit their paradigm. If someone resigned, GREAT! That’s the least they can do. But it matters not if they’re Democrat or Republican. It’s not as if their resignation reflects “better” on either party. A cheat is a cheat.
EarthToZoey on September 9, 2009 at 3:50 PM
Love how the station put the (R) before his name. Just to make sure nobody missed it.
That said, if I were that scumbag’s wife I doubt I’d be as classy as Jenny Sanford.

Yet another reason why Sacto needs a political enema.
The Ugly American on September 9, 2009 at 4:00 PM
The guy is beyond disgusting, and must go. A little context might add some flavor to this.
The Democrats controlling the CA legislature are hamstrung by state constitution rules requiring a 2/3′s approval on budget and taxes. They always need a few Republicans to cross over in order to pass the bills. Usually the Dems use bribes in the form of money for their districts or plum office space.
More recently the Dems have been pushing a change to open primaries. I wouldn’t put it past the Dems to be leaking unsavory information to the liberal press about certain legislators that the Dems would like to “pick off” in the primaries through crossover voting in the primaries. They could advance more “compliant, bipartisan” candidates with an eye to easier passage of critical bills in the future.

This should be a dual lesson for Republicans and Women alike.
(1) Republicans it is not enough to espouse values you must live them and vote for them and the voters need to hold them to those values.
(2) Women when are we going to finally stop using sex as a power tool? Did women really march for equality so that they can place their talent/merit between their legs?
I want to say sorry for his family but more times then not the wives know about their husbnds behavior and allow it to continue for the sake of the children. Again demaining and demoralizing for all involved except Mike Duvall he somehow comes out looking like a ladies man.

As the grand assemblyman (and congressman) of them all, the late Phil Burton said,
“If ya can’t take their money, drink their whiskey, screw their women, then look them in the eye and vote against them, you don’t belong here.”
But that was in an era that treaded less lightly.
