AP: 52% disapprove of Obama on health care; Update: More from poll internals
posted at 12:55 pm on September 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama will address a joint session of Congress this evening in an attempt to rescue his health-care overhaul, but he will face a much more skeptical audience with the voters. After all, Democrats have wide majorities in Congress, but Obama now has a majority of the electorate opposing him on health care, according to the AP:
Public disapproval of President Barack Obama’s handling of health care has jumped to 52 percent, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll released hours before he makes his case for overhaul in a prime-time address to Congress.
With his health revamp moving slowly and unemployment edging ever higher, Obama’s overall approval rating has also suffered a blow. The survey showed that 49 percent now disapprove of how he is handling his job as president, up from 42 percent who disapproved in July.
The grade people give Obama on health care also has worsened since July, when just 43 percent disapproved of his work on the issue.
But what about the proposals already in Congress? Voters oppose them as well, by a wide margin:
Forty-nine percent say they oppose the health overhaul plans being considered by Congress, compared to just 34 percent who favor them.
That’s not the limit of the bad news, either. Obama’s marks on the economy and on the deficit have suffered big blows, with majorities of 52% and 56% disapproving, respectively. On taxes, 52% disapprove as well, perhaps setting the stage for a real meltdown when cap-and-trade hits the Senate floor later this month.
Worst of all, the AP survey took place among American adults, not registered or likely voters. That sampling technique usually produces the most sympathy for liberal policies and politicians. If American adults have majorities opposed to Obama on these issues, the more predictive surveys of registered and likely voters will show more erosion and greater political danger for Democrats.
It’s safe to say the honeymoon is over, and that Americans have begun realizing that Obama is both more radical and far less competent than his presidential campaign projected.
Update: Interesting internals from the AP poll, including overall approval rating among adults being at 50%, with 49% disapproving. Strongly disapproving beats strongly approving by 11 points, 35%-24%. Obama has lost five points in six weeks on the overall approval number, and the gap closed from 13 points (55%-42%) to one point in that time.
Congressional disapproval has jumped six points to 69% in the last six weeks, and 14 points since the end of May, when ObamaCare became a priority. Only 28% approve, and only 3% strongly approve.
Obama’s internals on issues look very bad indeed. On economics, Obama’s disapproval is 52% over 44% approval — but those strongly disapproving are at 41%, compared to 20% strongly approving. That is a 12-point shift in six weeks, with the overall gap sinking 14 points in that period. On health care, it’s even worse. Obama has lost 19 points in the last six weeks on the overall approval gap.
On taxes, Obama now trails by a whopping 22 points, 50% disapproving against only 38% approving.
This is a meltdown, which makes the speech tonight a Hail Mary. His presidency is collapsing in terms of mandate, and this is among adults, not registered or likely voters. (via Geoff A)

That’s insane. If he really goes out there and regurgitates the same talking points, he’s driving the final nail in the coffin of his one-term Presidency.
This is not the 2008 campaign where he can go from one stop to the next and read the same words off a teleprompter to adoring crowds. If he wants Americans to side with him on a government takeover of 1/6 of the economy, he better have damn good reasons why. And making false promises won’t work after the failure of Porkulus.
Doughboy on September 9, 2009 at 1:34 PM
I have no interest in what this guy has to say because nothing he says means a damn thing.
The guy ran on being post-partisan, while he lied about and slandered President Bush, which he’s continued to this day.
His White House and his Democrat Party continually slander and lie about people who don’t agree with health care policies and he does nothing to stop him.
He ran on being a fiscal conservative and maintains that he is to this day, yet rammed through a trillion dollar “stimulus” package which by any reasonable measure, has completely crapped the bed and should be repealed.
He continually uses carefully chosen weasel words to make his arguments, which leave him enough wiggle room to do a 180 at any given point and still say he hasn’t changed position.
Barack Obama is a fraud and his speeches are an insult to our intelligence.
Once a man has established himself as counterfeit, what’s the point of listening to a word he says?

If not, then yes, secession is the next step.

NoDonkey on September 9, 2009 at 1:44 PM
It wasn’t the polarizing hideously deformed Speaker of the House, it was the method. She essentially shut the GOP out of the negotions and sat down with Waxman and other radicals to codify decades of leftist frustration at not getting single-payer healthcare instituted. The result was and is an over-reaching proposal that completely ignores such concerns of conservatives and moderated. For example the Waxman bill provides for federally funded abortions (bypassing the Hyde Amendment by a convoluted manner that co-mingles public and private dollars). The public option is present in some form even if it is called co-ops or other euphamisms. Most importantly it is not possible to acheive without higher taxes and/or less services to the vast number of Americans who are happy with the coverage they are getting now.
Bottom line, HR3200 is irresponsible legislation that only a socialist could love or support. If the filthy liar in the White House is serious about reform, he needs to toss out the proposals on the table and go back to square one- this time making the effort bipartisan, reasonable in scope, realistic in costs, and inclusive of tort reform.
highhopes on September 9, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Even if the GOP got majorities in House and Senate (not going to happen, but even if), bills to repeal this junk would just be vetoed by the Traitor-in-Chief. Sadly, once this stuff is passed, that’s it.
Keep in mind, it might not even have to be a willful secession, as these policies will probably lead to the disintegration of the federal government, anyway. Without strong economic growth, this government is doomed, and the dems are working to kill growth while building up huge obligations. That will not go on for very long, at all.

I’m not sure I would declare him down and out if he does the predictable tonight but he isn’t going to win the day by doing so. He’s acting as if the public doesn’t understand his message when they do in greater detail than he does! He can’t get away with claiming that the whole thing is deficit neutral paid for by “eliminating inefficiencies” because the public knows this is a bunch of hokum (not even the idiot Obama shills here defend that claim).
If the whole purpose of tonight’s speech is to sway the public, the filthy liar in the White House cannot do so with the same old talking points that have not convinced the public to date. Exhorting the Congress to pass his scheme or thinking that his speech will cause the public to rise up and demand that Congress immediately seize healthcare from the evil private insurance companies are pipe dreams from whatever Robert Gibbs is smoking.
The only effective way is for the filthy liar to get up and declare the debate hopelessly gone awry to the point it is time to hit the reset button.

Pure incompetence comes to mind but what I think it is really the normal socialist playbook tactic of worrying about fixing the damage after you’ve destroyed that which stands in your way. The filthy liar in the White House doesn’t want healthcare reform. He wants to seize the portion of the economy represented by that industry and “for our own good” reapportion the resources for his radical agenda. There will be no more room to fight against embryonic stem cell research, or federally funded abortions, or death panels once the government controls the dollars behind such efforts. HR3200 is simply a means to the real goal of replacing healthcare with single-payer deathcare.

Since Obama’s speech is to Congress, not to the American people who might not agree with him, within the Capitol building Obama will get rousing applause from liberal Democrats, while Republicans will probably “respect the office of the President” and simply not applaud, without booing or interrupting, as people at townhall meetings did.
A well-delivered speech in a relatively friendly hall might sway a few Blue Dogs who may be wavering, if the memory of angry protesters at home has faded from their minds, or they hid from their electorate and never held a townhall meeting. No doubt that the TOTUS will be resplendent in all its glory, expertly handled by Obam-ochhio’s puppetmaster, further adding to the feel-good atmosphere in the Capitol, far from the crowds of protesters in flyover country.
ObamaCare isn’t “toast” YET. The true test will come in the next few weeks, after Obama’s leg-tingling voice has left the Capitol, and wavering Dems are contemplating a vote for or against, comparing their memories of one magical evening in the Capitol with those angry people whose votes they will need in 2010, trying to answer the question, “Whom do you serve?”
Tonight’s speech will be like that of Saruman in the Lord of the Rings, whose voice charmed the ignorant masses to follow evil, from the tower of Orthanc.
In the Lord of the Rings, his power was overthrown by the words of greater wisdom from Gandalf, who gave strength to the doddering king of Rohan to resist Saruman’s threats and charms.
We don’t have a wizard like Gandalf to lead us, so that the people of America, like that of Rohan, must raise themselves in fierce resistance. Gird your loins, the Battle of Helm’s Deep is upon us.

Congress is a “Chernobyl on the Potomac,” with The Won in charge of managing the meltdown, and we can’t hit the SCRAM button for another year yet. Great. Just, great.
A tip to the Republicans: The ObamaCare bill is set to start demanding payment into it in 2011, and isn’t set to start paying out until 2013 (and gee, why do you think they picked those dates? If you sorry lot in the RNC can’t figure it out then you’re not worth voting for!). I suggest that if ObamaCare does somehow manage to pass and get signed into law, you run in 2010 on a platform of repealing it, as swiftly as possible. And returning the money taken in taxes for it to those who paid for it, while you’re at it!

I don’t think his “leg tingling” oratory gifts will work this time. The bloom is off the rose. I think a lot of independents and even some gullible Republicans have learned a valuable lesson about supporting a politician simply because he delivers a great speech and looks good on TV. The far left radical policies aren’t winning him any fans either.
If he doesn’t deliver some substance tonight, Obamacare is finished.

I saw one analysis that said much of this will be forgotten and the poll numbers will rise if the filthy liar in the White House is able to sign something called “healthcare reform” which is still probable before the end of the year. I’m not so sure that this is an accurate assessment.
The negative poll numbers and the anger is not limited to just healthcare reform. It goes well beyond that and ramming through yet another trillion dollar IOU on a strictly party line vote is not going to help close the divide that has developed. This isn’t just about healthcare or the economy. It is a much bigger discontent with government.
As an aside, the absolute quote of the day I saw was somebody who claimed that all this anti-healthcare opposition was really nothing more than whites still upset that a black man is President! Really.

This level of disapproval now guarantees losses. People will not forget. The longer the Congressional level of approval remains in the 30′s or lower, the greater the certainty that the liberals will be completely swept from power in both the House and the Senate.
We must continue to focus on what unites us on the right and what the overwhelming majority of Americans dislike about liberal ideologues in Congress and those that go along with them.
Please keep your eyes on the prize. It’s not 2012 and defeating Obama. It’s 2010 and retaking Congress. That comes first. A successful national campaign in 2010, district by district, state by state, is the first step of our journey to seeing Morning in America again.

I have been trying to think of what the Big O could possibly say that would be new, different, credible, convincing, hopey-changey… Can’t think of a single thing.
Is he putting himself center stage to look ineffective and incompetent? Making a big production in order to say the same old stuff with minor word changes seems more risk than it’s worth, from his perspective. I’d anticipate lots of Dems who are perplexed by recent events to watch, hoping for reassurance. After all this, how can he pull them together with rhetoric? Is there any other result that would seem like a positive outcome that he could expect? Why do this at all?

Does anyone else think that there’ll be some little kid with cancer sitting next to Michelle Nobama during this charade? There’s no way the Dims can make their case on healthcare with out using a prop. I’m guessing….Jimmy. Six years old. Bald from chemo. Worried single mom sitting next to him. Doesn’t have health insurance. Do it for him. Please. Clap clap clap…

Well, yah, my thoughts also. Everything the man is doing will create damage and come level of chaos. I cannot buy he and his cadre are so dumb all this poop is due to ineptitude. NOBODY can be this inept without trying.
Creating total chaos is a long-used tactic of spreading La Revolucion. It’s what Che was supposed to do in South America, what the VC were doing in South Vietnam….Germany was in chaos when Adolf stepped in and brought order.
Will we be stronger when things get really crazy? I dunno. People are polarizing and getting beyond the talking stages. It isn’t just conservatives buying guns and ammo, I suspect.
