Quote of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on September 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Now look at one way Mr. Obama wants to eliminate inefficiency and waste: He’s asked Congress to create an Independent Medicare Advisory Council—an unelected, largely unaccountable group of experts charged with containing Medicare costs. In an interview with the New York Times in April, the president suggested that such a group, working outside of ‘normal political channels,’ should guide decisions regarding that ‘huge driver of cost … the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives…”

Given such statements, is it any wonder that many of the sick and elderly are concerned that the Democrats’ proposals will ultimately lead to rationing of their health care by—dare I say it—death panels? Establishment voices dismissed that phrase, but it rang true for many Americans. Working through ‘normal political channels,’ they made themselves heard, and as a result Congress will likely reject a wrong-headed proposal to authorize end-of-life counseling in this cost-cutting context. But the fact remains that the Democrats’ proposals would still empower unelected bureaucrats to make decisions affecting life or death health-care matters. Such government overreaching is what we’ve come to expect from this administration…

Instead of poll-driven ‘solutions,’ let’s talk about real health-care reform: market-oriented, patient-centered, and result-driven. As the Cato Institute’s Michael Cannon and others have argued, such policies include giving all individuals the same tax benefits received by those who get coverage through their employers; providing Medicare recipients with vouchers that allow them to purchase their own coverage; reforming tort laws to potentially save billions each year in wasteful spending; and changing costly state regulations to allow people to buy insurance across state lines. Rather than another top-down government plan, let’s give Americans control over their own health care.”

To what avail? When have Republicans actually reduced government?

True_King on September 9, 2009 at 7:22 AM

Sarah Palin reduced the size of Alaska government when she was governor. See dub dub dub conservatives4palin.com/2009/06/governor-palins-budgets-pointing-out.html

She’s right about the multiple ways in which insurance could be improved without the centralized government-driven approach of the Dems.

In sports when one player or team prevails against another a greater majority of the time it’s called “having one’s number.”

Sarah has the Messiah’s number in spades; unfortunately no other Republican comes close to the mark.

Great article.

Look, im not saying Obamacare is an ideal solution, or a solution at all…but a lot of the opposition arguments seem to bring up potential issues that actually seem very similar to what we all already put up with…

ernesto on September 9, 2009 at 9:40 AM

If it’s similar, then why pay another $1.5 trillion and add to the deficit for it?

You didn’t read Palin’s article did you?

It helps that they consistently underestimate Sarah Palin. Everyone does, even fellow Conservatives.

They think her a rube, a hick, an idiot and the like.

Holger on September 9, 2009 at 12:14 PM

There can be no reform under this administration. Give an inch and lose.

Wait and try sensible reform later.

Wrong. It is the marxist crap. But since you don’t care about liberty, I brought up the disconnect you possess regarding the cost.

Marxism doesn’t scare old people — they’ve been beating it back all their lives. It’s the spectre of rationing and being tossed into the bio-waste bin that has them reaching for the shot gun this time.

changing costly state regulations to allow people to buy insurance across state lines.

Here is the real solution. It will increase competition ten fold at least and it is so very simple to do….even a caveman politician can do it.

If only six health insurance options are available to you in your state and suddenly you have hundreds of options from a nationwide pool of providers…cost will drop dramatically. Isn’t this really the only problem we have with health care in this country…the cost? The quality is unsurpassed.

The left is really not concerned with reform of health care and never has been. They are concerned with collectivism in ALL things.

Tyranny is what gets people. It isn’t Marxism it is the Tyranny that comes easily with it, tyranny that is very nearly a requirement for Marxism to function…

Perhaps Hitler did not write Mein Kampf. He did dictate the book to Rudolf Hess.

Perhaps Mark Levin did not write Liberty and Tyranny; Rush Limbaugh was his ghost-writer.

JFK did not write Profiles in Courage; his brother Bobby did.

All this talk about Sarah Palin not writing the WSJ op-ed is bogus. Her name is on the article. And so were the names of the above gentlemen on the jacket cover of their book.

If you think Sarah didn’t write it, prove it. But if you can’t, butt out; you or I have no business accusing Sarah Palin or any writer of wrongdoing without valid evidence.

If he mentions her by name, it’s a sign of utter desperation. It means he’s got nothing but his Alinsky tactics and the only target he can come up with is a private citizen.

Exactly. He needs someone to personalize as the problem and then destroy. SP better ready for a political war because it is coming. She has political instincts of the highest order but Obama has a massive smear apparatus at his disposal with a lot of underlings to carry out the second public raping of Sarah Palin.

Yeah, but she’s not even in public office anymore. To try to make her the public face of the opposition would go over as well as labeling Rush the leader of the GOP.

Hmmm, maybe her resignation wasn’t such a bad move after all.

Bring it on. She knew he would react this way. After all the garbage that’s been thrown at her for a year now, she is bullet proof. Citizen Palin is leading the attack for we “angry mobbers”!

atheling on September 9, 2009 at 4:02 PM

If Obama carries through with this plan of action the road to political LEGITIMIZATION for Sarah Palin just got a little bit easier.

technopeasant on September 9, 2009 at 4:07 PM

I love the pic that Drudge has up right now. That says it all. Obama will use Palin as the butt of his stupid punch drunk fratboy jokes, but sensible people will see right through it. This joker makes my blood boil.

mike_NC9 on September 9, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Well she’s a little late to the party on the inter-state competition part (GOP Senators and Reps as well as pundits have been talking about that for weeks now) but I am glad to see that she’s finally mentioning it. Glad that it’s in the WSJ, too and not just a Facebook posting.
