Pelosi and Reid to Obama: We’ve got the votes to pass ObamaCare; Update: Snowe iffy?

posted at 8:21 pm on September 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

Didn’t Madam Speaker tell us this six weeks ago, shortly before the plug was pulled?

I’m skeptical.

The president told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that it is important for them to pass health care reform bills soon, the sources said.

Both leaders told the president that despite the difficult rough and tumble of the legislative process in the last few weeks, they are optimistic that both the House and Senate can pass health care reform legislation.

So they had a private meeting, on the eve of Obama’s big speech, at which no one really knows what was said … and came out afterwards preaching victory? Quite a bombshell. One minor detail that’s omitted: Which proposals, precisely, do they have enough votes to pass? The public option? A “trigger” for the public option? Health-care co-ops? A mandate to buy coverage? The One might have lowered his demands to the point where only the barest bones reform plan is still on the table; assuming that they do have the votes, the fact that he wants something passed immediately only proves how fragile the coalition must be. Indeed, one of the top Blue Dogs called the public option a “dealbreaker” yesterday — right around the same time that lefty Obama supporters were threatening to abandon The One entirely if he doesn’t cram the public option down America’s throat.

I think this is a bluff, but it’s serious enough that now might be a good time to phone your representatives. Exit question: Is The One going to turn it all around tomorrow night? Hmmmmm.

Update: Is even the RINO-iest RINO having second thoughts?

I met with the Senator personally during the August recess back here in Maine when she spoke with dozens of Maine folks in a series of health care talks throughout the state. Here is what I learned: She is worried about costs and the impact on the deficit, the public option plan is “off the table”, she wants more private insurance companies in Maine (we have 3), and she doesn’t support higher taxes – especially during a recession.

Those concerns and opinions were not from “unnamed sources,” they were straight from Senator Snowe…

So, my suggestion to the White House: put away your shovels, there is no Snowe in the forecast.

Blowback

He really thinks this speech is going to do it? This we have the votes thing is a giant bluff. His poll numbers are diving. Does he think that by chairing the security council (God save us) and proclaiming himself the king of the world that he can flip the flipable?

The History Channel ran a segment on the Anti-Christ this weekend. I don’t believe in any of that stuff but it did say that the anti-christ legends had the anti-christ coming out of the UN. Interesting.

http://www.american.com

The budget deficit for fiscal 2009 is estimated to be a staggering $1.6 trillion, larger than the entire national debt as recently as 1984. It is the largest peacetime deficit (measured as a percentage of federal revenues) since 1936, when the country was still in the throes of a far worse economic downturn. The deficit will cause the ratio of debt to GDP to rise to over 80 percent by the end of fiscal 2009. That will be the highest it has been since 1950.

Worse, the Obama administration is projecting unprecedented annual deficits over the next ten years if its political agenda of cap and trade, universal healthcare, and other expensive programs is enacted. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, these programs will average more than 4 percent of GDP each year and total $9.3 trillion over the decade. That would mean a doubling of the national debt in absolute terms and at least a 50 percentage point rise in the ratio of debt to GDP, taking us back nearly to where the debt was at the end of World War II.

And that, of course, assumes a quick recovery from the current recession and an economy expanding at a rate averaging 2.5 percent a year beginning in 2010. If the economy were to continue to lag or the country face a serious crisis, such as a major war, or if the Obama agenda is enacted and turns out to be more expensive than estimated—as government programs usually do—the result could be a debt load that not even the United States could sustain. The only alternatives would then be a tax rate that would cripple the economy, radical reductions in government spending, or a deliberate policy of inflation that would send interest rates soaring.

And Simplex thinks we are on the right track?

WallStreetJournal:

For starters, $1 trillion of extra debt-financed spending would cause the government to pay about $300 billion of extra interest in the next decade. Moreover, the CBO’s method of estimating the cost of such a program doesn’t recognize the incentives it creates for households and firms to change their behavior.

Gosh why are we upset with obama? /sarc

Also from the WSJ:

The deficits projected for the next decade and beyond are unprecedented. According to an assessment released in March by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the president’s budget implies that deficits will average 5.2% of GDP over the next decade and will be 5.5% of GDP in 2019. Without the president’s proposals, the budget office forecasts a 2019 deficit of only 2% of GDP.

Do you ever gain any?

No, you can’t. Pelosi is what you wished your real Mom to be.

Your mom had no real power but she was a strong woman. Your dad beat her down, and that dichotomy left you with no choice but to argue everything you saw, whether right or wrong. Even common convention became an enemy to you; you’re not capable of properly discerning right from wrong.

‘Wrong’, as you define it, means not getting what you want at the moment.

‘Right’ means making the world the way YOU delusionally feel it should be.

God, your profile is getting easier all the time!

Some got it, some don’t. People tell me I’m full of it but, realistically, you ain’t got none of it.

I just read Baucus that proposal suggests a 35% fine on plans costing over $8000 per year.
Now remember congress and Unions are exempt from most of these schemes.

I know for a fact my Boss pays $1000 per month for my and my families heathcare!
Do I get taxed 35% of $12,000 or 35% of $4000 per year?

Most family plans cost approximately 12,000 per year and they are not the Cadillac plans the Congress and Unions have.
Why are they exempt if its such a good idea that the taxpayer pay for this fantasy why don’t congress and Unions pay also?

Why doesn’t the Pinnochio HealthScare bill go into effect until 2013 if its’ such a great idea and so badly needed that we have to pass it right away?

The real trick is going to be maintaining the attention span of a majority of Americans. If the President wants to pass health care all he has to do is put it on the back burner for a few weeks and let something else come up. Then slam it through when people are focused elsewhere. Reconciliation may only be an option until Oct 15th, but where there’s a will there is a way. They have been working for socialized health care for over 100 years – maybe longer. For those libs who think this is a free ride – guess again:

Baucus Plan Allows for Fines Up to $3,800 for Failing to Get Health Insurance The plan from Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana (sucks) would make health insurance mandatory, just like auto coverage. (That most illegals don’t have)

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/08/baucus-plan-allows-fines-failing-health-insurance/?loomia_ow=t0:s0:a16:g2:r1:c0.199806:b27592236:z0

Families who fail to get health insurance could be fined up to $3,800 under a health care reform plan proposed by a top Senate negotiator.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., who as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee is leading talks among the “Gang of Six” senators to hammer out a bipartisan compromise, offered what he described on Tuesday as a “framework” and not a “final product.”

But the detailed proposal comes just days ahead of a self-imposed Sept. 15 deadline for such a deal. Baucus is pushing his committee members hard to hammer out a bill, and those details come as strong suggestions.

Baucus has set a deadline of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning for fellow members of the bipartisan group to offer “specific proposals” for a compromise bill. He made clear “time is running out” to get a deal.

“The rubber is starting to meet the road….We’re not going to dawdle,” Baucus told FOX News Tuesday evening.

THE ONLY THING HITTING THE ROAD SHOULD BE SEANTOR *UCKUS….

Nevadans favored Tarkanian over Reid 49 percent to 38 percent and Lowden over Reid 45 percent to 40 percent, according to the poll.

Oh… 37?

So if she loses two more votes its over… and we haven’t worried about the undecided; these are 37 stated “no” votes on record. How many more aren’t on record yet?

All we need is two for this to die.

I assumed this thing would die in the Senate; if the Dems have it die in the House, where they have a commanding majority and no filibuster exists… that will have to leave a mark.

What I think they are talking about is Sen. Reid using reconciliation to ram it though the Senate, but the have an Oct 15th deadline to use that. This what I think they mean when they say they have the votes, not that it would be a normal vote in the Senate.

if Harry thinks he can play games to get it he’s right…if he thinks he can do it without getting his hand bit off like the Fenris wolf did Tyr he’s wrong…and 15 Oct could come and go if the GOP suddenly wants to hear every page, every footnote to every bill….

“change”

sven10077 on September 9, 2009 at 8:10 AM

Snowe is iffy? Are you serious? She’s merely found herself in the same position AARP found itself. Outed while making secret deals with the opposition. She can say whatever she wishes; talk is cheap. She’ll vote for Government Health Control. Bet on it.

ROCnPhilly on September 9, 2009 at 8:31 AM

The public option? A “trigger” for the public option? Health-care co-ops? A mandate to buy coverage?

Could someone explain these options?

Merci,

americanfrenchie on September 9, 2009 at 8:39 AM

So Reid and Pelosi ‘have the votes’, but they don’t have a bill? Don’t know what will be in the bill? What’s wrong with that picture?

Skandia Recluse on September 9, 2009 at 12:44 AM

Disgraceful and outrageous

You know the one you wanted to be equal in power to our military…

Snowe is not iffy. She does this same wee wee step every time, just before voting Leftist liberal, as if she’s convincing anyone that she isn’t Obama’s tool.

CNS News reports Obama’s address to Freshmen @ Wakefield High, VA

Obama told the students that in the 1940s and 50s, “most of the wealthy countries around the world decided to set up health care systems that covered everybody. The United States — for a number of different reasons — organized their health care around employer-based health insurance.”

That is neither accurate nor is it impartial reporting of historical fact. The United States in the 1940s and 50s did not organize health care around employer-based health insurance; that did not occur until entering the 1970s. In the 1940s and 50s Americans bought catastrophic insurance policies should hospitalization be required, but paid out of pocket per doctor visit and for injuries like broken bones. It wasn’t until Congress padded its own ass with gold plated health insurance coverage that other government workers started to demand employer based health insurance that began being serviced by Blue Cross Blue Shield, but ultimately the insurance industry decided to go the HMO route for purposes based upon their own profits, not based upon servicing either the patients best interests or doctors modus operandi at the time. That did not begin happening until government employees demanded similar consideration on a lower scale to what Congress gave itself. So you have state employees and later county and municipal employees demanding what Congress provided itself. Of course huge corporations used benefits to draw employees.

For all of the above to have manipulated events to the detriment of small businesses and entrepreneurs is bad enough. But to go to the HR3200 length to strangle the businesses into bankruptcy by mandating that small businesses provide every benefit package that Congress deems the IRS can coerce, regardless of the business’s income and inability to purchase mandated coverage for all employees regardless of employment status, proves the malicious intent of the Bill’s sponsors and supporters.

If you submit to the IRS a minor error, obviously by accident, the IRS will refuse you any leniency, no consideration to be tolerated by the IRS under any circumstance, and the IRS will charge 40% penalties, twice the current rate.

And that doesn’t even begin to address the thousands of dollars fined from families earning too little to pay for what the Democrat/Obama HR3200 mandates. As if that’s going to help provide those who can’t afford to buy what it is that they can’t buy. Families have modest mortgages and utilities, but because they manage to get by, they aren’t given any consideration. I told you all that Obama would tax low income families just like Clinton took 1/3 out of a subsistence family of four income of $24K/year for the IRS Federal Income Tax (not counting state and local taxes), and Carter burdened the lower income bracket. Our interest rates for debt to pay for the loans to pay the taxes will be worse with Obama than the 24-32% interest rates the self righteous Jimmy Carter blessed us with.

KEEP BIG GOVERNMENT AT BAY

I’m from Maine and I have no doubt that Olympia Snowe and probably Susan Collins will vote for this thing. They are more liberal than many Democrats. They’re not holding out because of their principles, they’re just waiting for political cover like the Blue Dogs are.

This quote is taken from the book Liberty and Tyranny by Mark Levin-

“In 2006 the Census Bureau reported that there were 46.6 million people without health insurance. About 9.5 million were not United States citizens. Another 17-million lived in households with incomes exceeding $50,000 a year and could , presumably, purchase their own health care coverage. Eighteen million of the 46.6 million of the uninsured were between the ages of eighteen and thirty four, most of whom were in good health and not necessarily in need of health-care coverage or chose not to purchase it. Moreover, only 30 percent of the non-elderly population who became uninsured in a given year remained uninsured for more than twelve months. Almost 50 percent regained their health coverage within four months. The 47-million ” uninsured” figure used by Pelosi and others is widely inaccurate ” ( Levin,2009 p.107)
