Kos: The public option is the nutroots’ Waterloo

What they really want is ruinous single-payer, but they’ll accept a road-to-ruin public option in lieu of that — in the name of compromise, mind you. He’s still pushing the idea that last year’s election was an electoral endorsement of big-state Hopenchange, despite the tanking polls over the last month, despite the fact that the public is lukewarm at best about a public option, despite the resounding predictions even from lefty pollsters — including Nate Silver, speaking at Yearly Kos — that The One’s insane expansion of government will mean major pick-ups for the GOP next year. Oh well. Listen to him, Barry! Public option or bust, baby.

I agree with Kos that I hope Barry does the right thing.
However, I expect Barry will do the Left thing.

What was Kos doing there at all? There’s no way Ed Schultz has a bigger audience than Daily Kos.

Here’s another one:
After many victories, Queen Boudica’s army of Celts goes in for the kill against the Romans. But the Legionaires have chosen the battlefield and Obamacare is Boudica’s wagon train blocking the Celt’s escape when they’re beaten.
(I hate to compare Boudica to the Dems, but it seems applicable here).

Which one? Probably well-versed on China’s or the USSR’s. The US Constitution? Not so much.
I am continually amazed and awed at the wisdom of the Founders and what they were trying to implement. They truly feared a strong federal government for all of the reasons that we are seeing come to fruition with our current government that has disregarded and discarded the letter of Constitutional limits. The Constitution deliberately set limits “Congress shall not”, “Congress shal make no law …”, etc. Look at where we are now, having disregarded the admonitions of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist authors and how close we are coming to losing the final elements of our liberties and freedoms.

Mel Gibson did the real battle no favors with his acting….
Daniel Morgan knew that he should use the unique landscape of Cowpens and the time available before Tarleton’s arrival to his advantage. Furthermore, he knew his men and his opponent, knew how they would react in certain situations, and used this knowledge to his advantage.[27] To begin with, the location of his forces were contrary to any existing military doctrine: he placed his army between the Broad and Pacolet River, thus making escape impossible if the army was routed. His reason for cutting off escape was obvious: to ensure that the untrained militiamen would not, as they had been accustomed to do, turn in flight at the first hint of battle and abandon the regulars. (The Battle of Camden had ended in disaster when the militia, which was half of the American force, broke and ran as soon as the shooting started.) Selecting a hill as the center of his position, he placed his Continental infantry on it, deliberately leaving his flanks exposed to his opponent. Morgan reasoned that Tarleton would attack him head on, and he made his tactical preparations accordingly. He set up three lines of soldiers: one of skirmishers (sharpshooters); one of militia; and a main one. The 150 select skirmishers were from North Carolina (Major McDowell) and Georgia (Major Cunningham). Behind these men were 300 militiamen under the command of Andrew Pickens.
Realizing that poorly-trained militia were unreliable in battle, especially when they were under attack from cavalry, Morgan decided to ask the militia to fire two shots and then retreat, so he could have them re-form under cover of the reserve (light dragoons commanded by William Washington and James McCall) behind the third, more experienced line of militia and continentals. The movement of the militia in the second line would mask the third line to the British. The third line, composed of the remainder of the forces (about 550 men) was composed of Continentals from Delaware and Maryland, and militiamen from Georgia and Virginia. Colonel John Eager Howard commanded the Continentals and Colonels Tate and Triplett the militia. The goal of this strategy was to weaken and disorganize Tarleton’s forces (which would be attacking the third line uphill) before attacking and defeating them. Howard’s men would not be unnerved by the militia’s expected move, and unlike the militia they would be able to stand and hold, especially since the first and second lines, Morgan felt, would have inflicted both physical and psychological damage on the advancing British before the third line came into action.
Additionally, by placing his men downhill from the advancing British lines, Morgan exploited the British tendency to fire too high in battle. The downhill position of his forces allowed the British forces to be silhouetted against the morning sunlight, providing easy targets for Patriot troops. With a ravine on their right flank and a creek on their left flank, Morgan’s forces were protected against British flanking maneuvers at the beginning of the battle. Morgan insisted,[28]“the whole idea is to lead Benny [Tarleton] into a trap so we can beat his cavalry and infantry as they come up those slopes. When they’ve been cut down to size by our fire, we’ll attack them.”
In developing his tactics at Cowpens, as historian John Buchanan wrote, Morgan may have been “the only general in the American Revolution, on either side, to produce a significant original tactical thought.”
There’s a reason the liberals won’t teach about our Revolution…the ideas are dangerous and the results show that motivated Free Men can work miracles.

I detest labeling CoIn that, but will use the modern terminology for it as it is immaterial and the younger soldiers will recognize it.
The irony is of course they fashion themselves “revolutionairies” but cannot see that they are in fact the superstate they feign antipathy towards….

sven10077 on September 8, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Good points, and I do think that the essential problem is that they always assume that the government’s activity in the domestic arena will be benevolent and always under their control; that it cannot overstep its bounds–unless they wish it to do so. Now, naturally they do fear certain portions of the government, but then they turn around and think governmental expansion in other areas will never turn out ill for them or beard their liberties. Foolish. Men are not angels.
In the movie I thought it was funny the Carolina back-country had a stone house, and a ancient one at that…
I’ve been to the real battlefield…as with all of them, the smallness of the site is what hits you.
And for the record, I screwed up–it was the Continental line that turned on the pursuers, and the reformed militia flanked from the sides, which leads us to…
Cannae! Overly strong charge into causes envelopment from both sides…
Horatius on September 8, 2009 at 10:27 PM
Well, that would solve a lot of problems for a lot of folks. But I don’t think he has near enough gonads for it. He is just a talker who has to keep talking faster and louder to keep his following. Mel Gibson did the real battle no favors with his acting – Sven
Good movie, but I don’t like when Hollywood takes a real life charcter like Tarleton, changes his name (”Tarrington”) and then changes what happened to him. Tarleton survied the war and went on to become an M.P.
Same goes for ‘Gladiator’ … Great movie, but Commodus did not die in the arena, he was murdered in his bath. C’mon Holyweird!
Tony737 on September 8, 2009 at 10:35 PM
also Greene, Morgan, Marion et al each had enough story to them that they didn’t need amalgamated….Mel Gibson decided to make the Cowpens into “Braveheart with Tri-Corns” and the film suffered for it….
Gladiator on the other hand while awesome popcorn seller failed for me on several levels in a way that I, Claudius though also of wobbly history did not….
I, Claudius embellishes and adds to prove universal truths that were evident in Rome….Gladiator used them to make a Hollywood film.

Markos is, when you boil it down, a mushy moderate. You can see in this clip he’s already working on his “we must stand with Messiah” if there is no public option. I remember reading on daily Kos the night their guy was getting creamed by Leibermann and Markos was trying to put a positive spin on it and many of his loyalists were very angered and asking his what “*&*&$%” planet he lived on.
Marcus on September 8, 2009 at 10:41 PM
Methinks Markos is a little right, though I am pained to admit he knows anything, but if Obamacare (note that it has been labeled that regardless of the source of the plan). Congress put Barry out front and hope, I think, to avoid the shrapnel when the initiative fails epically. Pelosi will deny everything and push it onto Hussein. He is the rookie, after all, this is his role.
Welcome to hardball, newbie. Even Pelosi could throw a strike, I think. You ain’t driving the bus, you are a hired hand…Michelle will need those arms to dig you up out of your grave, if she hasn’t had a better offer, clod.

I don’t know how many “Waterloos” Obama has left in him. Has anyone noticed lately that he looks like something the cat dragged in? I don’t think he’s ever worked this hard in all his previous part-time jobs
long days as a hard working community organizerBarry-O’s looking more haggard than Bush did in the days & months following 9-11..
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot one more thing, the “birthers” & Orly Taitz won a huge victory in Santa Ana Federal Court today. But of course, that’s probably got its own thread here on HotAir. Oh, wait…
.
Finally, a judge who respects the Constitution, is at least willing to force Obama to prove his eligibilty- notice I didn’t mention his birth certificate. I’m not a “birther” or a “bliefer” (blind believer in Obama) but I’m a “dualer” (as in Obama’s dual citizenship makes him not natural-born). Color me happy tonight.

I think horseteeth recognized the fact democrats have a problem with his “They are not even negotiating with republicans. They are negotiating with eachother.” comment, but Jabba continues to disparage “blue dogs” who hold a lot of the key votes they need to cram a public option down a throats.

It doesn’t matter what number of people show up in DC on 9/12; the fact that MANY do so will be sufficient for now. We have gotten no PSM (piss stream media) support on this so it is as Grassroots as it comes. The steadily increasing number of anti/tax anti/spend patriots appearing at each event is a strong sign that we will not be ignored any more.
Keep showing up at your local tea parties. Call down your current elected reps/sens and make them take a stand. Bring your video cameras. The PSM cannot keep spinning it all.
This is not a sprint but a marathon. Be in this for the long haul as your opponents are too. This victory will go to the most dedicated….that must me us. We have 100 years of Progressive policies to overcome & roll back….or we can try and learn to live with 7th century Sharia policies. I would rather put up a spirited defense.

From Wiki:
He moved with his family to El Salvador in 1976, but later returned to the Chicago area in 1980 after his family fled threats placed on their lives by communist insurgents during the Salvadoran Civil War.[2] As an adult, he has recounted his memories of the civil war, including an incident that occurred when he was 8 years old, in which he saw communist guerillas executing students who had been accused of collaborating with the government.[4]
And yet his sole purpose in life is to bring communism to the USA. Anyone here a psychiatrist that can tell me the name of his condition?
