Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on September 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama tried to do some mythbusting two weeks ago in his weekly radio address, but two months earlier, the President himself used numbers that at the very least lent credence to what he called a myth:
But it also should be an honest debate, not one dominated by willful misrepresentations and outright distortions, spread by the very folks who would benefit the most by keeping things exactly as they are.
So today, I want to spend a few minutes debunking some of the more outrageous myths circulating on the internet, on cable TV, and repeated at some town halls across this country.
Let’s start with the false claim that illegal immigrants will get health insurance under reform. That’s not true. Illegal immigrants would not be covered. That idea has never even been on the table.
June 11, 2009, at Southwest High School in Green Bay, Wisconsin:
Now, how this debate is evolving in Washington, unfortunately sometimes kind of falls into the usual politic. So what you’ve heard is some folks on the other side saying, “I’m opposed to a public option because that’s going to lead to government running your health care system.” Now, I don’t know how clearly I can say this, but let me try to repeat it: If you’ve got health insurance that you’re happy with through the private sector, then we’re not going to force you to do anything. All we’re saying is for the 46 million people who don’t have health insurance, or for people who’ve got health insurance, like you, who are self-employed but the premiums and the deductibles are so high that you almost never get prevention services — you’ve put off going to a doctor until you’re really sick because of the out-of-pocket expenses — let’s change some of those incentives so that we get more people getting prevention, more people getting health care to keep them healthy, as opposed to just treating them when they get sick.
August 15th, 2009, in Grand Junction, Colorado (not in the videotape):
So just to recap here, if you’re one of nearly 46 million people who don’t have health insurance, you will finally have quality, affordable options. If you do have health insurance, we will help make that insurance more affordable and more secure.
46 million without insurance? Hot Air readers already know this, but just to remind everyone, that number includes illegal immigrants:
For the record, according to the latest figures from the Census Bureau, 45.6 million Americans currently lack health insurance. This is actually down slightly from the 47 million that were uninsured in 2006. However, those numbers don’t tell the whole story.
For example, roughly one quarter of those counted as uninsured — 12 million people — are eligible for Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP), but haven’t enrolled. This includes 64 percent of all uninsured children, and 29 percent of parents with children. Since these people would be enrolled in those programs automatically if they went to the hospital for care, calling them uninsured is really a smokescreen.
Another 10 million uninsured “Americans” are, at least technically, not Americans. Approximately 5.6 million are illegal immigrants, and another 4.4 million are legal immigrants but not citizens.
The actual bottom line number of people who cannot afford to buy insurance amounts to 14 million, not 46 million. Without immigrants, including almost 6 million illegal immigrants, it’s no higher than 36 million. If Obama wants to reassure us that he has no intention of covering illegal immigrants, he should stop using them to inflate the numbers of uninsured Americans to stoke a sense of crisis that doesn’t exist. (h/t Bob S)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

the 47 million talking point is so common these guys don’t even bother to look at it. I think the best example of that is not illegal immigrants, but the people who refuse to purchase health insurance but now Obama and the left are going to force them for their own good.

We have to take any of the democrats’ legislation in the same vane that they try and view the constitution. They think if something is not expressly forbiden then it is ok. Therefore since rationing care, abortions, death panels, and providing health care to illegals is not expressly forbidden then we must assume they will do it in deed if not in word.

There is no other explanation. There can be no other explanation, unless one is ready to consider that he possibly has a mental condition that has not been addressed. No amount of spin can change his own diametrically opposed words.

On my Vista desktop there’s a little feature that runs headlines. One of them this morning said, “Emerging from an angry August recess, Obama is weakened politically and faces growing concerns, particularly from within his own party, over his strength as a leader.”
I clicked it to read the whole story, and it took me to MSNBC where I read, “The page you are seeking has expired and is no longer available at msnbc.com.
However, it may be available at The Washington Post.”
I looked around on WAPO but didn’t find it.
I wonder if someone at MSNBC got fired for posting such a scurrilous observation about Dear Leader. “Who posted that story?! Are you trying to get us all fired?!?!”

re. uninsured illegal immigrants. Why would someone have to be a citizen, or even in the country legally, to buy health insurance? Like food, flat-screen tv’s, cell phones, and most things, anyone can buy health insurance. All you need is the desire and the money.

It boils my blood whenever I see a GOP officeholder or conservative talking head allow a Dem officeholder or liberal talking head get away with this ridiculous talking point. It should be the first thing clarified in any discussion because it helps to define the problem and, in turn, helps to frame the discussion about how to solve the problem.
Conservatives can moronically respond only by saying that the Dems’ approach is about nothing but control–and that’s true–but it matters not what they say, it matters only what they prove. So any time this nonsense talking point surfaces, a conservative should immediately insist on breaking that 46 million (or whatever) figure into its component parts.
In short, 6 million are illegal aliens, so they’re health care is a law-enforcement matter (deportation) not a health-coverage matter. Another 6 million or so are legal aliens, so we should debate what should be done with them. Another 12 million are eligible for existing programs, so get them enrolled. Maybe Sec. Kathleen Sebilius should stop yammering and begin devising an enrollment drive. Why make such great hay over enacting S-Chip and then not follow through? It’s absurd. Still another good chunk of the often-cited number are people who can afford insurance but forgo it. Here, the Dems are talking about imposing insurance coverage on them. I’m a little indifferent on this group because I think arguments go both ways: why force them, but then why should be shoulder their burden when something catastrophic occurs? But in all events, Dems should be required to be honest about this group–we wouldn’t be “saving” them, we’d be forcing them into the system.
Finally, we’re left with the 14 million who are uninsurable or who somehow can’t obtain coverage though they want it. Here’s where much of the debate lies. And it’s my impression that we don’t need to overall the system for these people.
Of course, those who are insured would benefit by reform of health care insurance to the end of reducing medical costs and insurance premiums, but nothing Dems prescribe will actually solve those problems.
In the end, to define our problems, the mythical 46 million figure needs to be repeatedly debunked. Then, we can have a sensible debate.
BuckeyeSam on September 7, 2009 at 8:53 AM
Guys, the devil is in the details. He does not say that illegals will have health insurance. He says they will have “options”, not insurance coverage. It’s really quite simple, it is a shell game , and we lose.

All you people insinuating that Obama is lying are missing a clear fact. It is impossible for a liberal/progressive/Marxist/socialist/Democrat to lie.
With them, there is NO FIXED TRUTH. Truth is whatever they say it is at the moment, and therefore whatever they say can be contradicted the next moment without hypocrisy. With Obama, there is double protection from being deceitful; messiah’s simply never lie, never deceive, and never seek to do harm to their creation (just ignore all that false abortion, infanticide, and death panel talk)
Evil, on the other hand, is all who disagree with them.
It’s a different paradigm (until Judgment Day)

The HC bills circulating in the House specifically prohibit health care providers from asking patients for ID before they render services. So yes, anybody from anywhere could get health care services in the U.S. under the Dim bills, regardless of their citizenship status or ability to pay for the services, and U.S. taxpayers will end up paying the bill.
BTW, there are SW border towns where Mexican women cross over into the U.S. to have their babies so they’ll get U.S. citizenship (and all the welfare benefits that go with it), and the moms will get “free” (for them) maternity care, then they go back home to Mexico. There was a story in the paper last year about a bunch of Mexicans who walk across the border once a month, just to go to the post office and pick up their U.S. welfare checks.

That’s a good joke. But I was really speaking re. the point-of-view of Obama and the Dems. Why is there a preumption that an illegal alien is any less likely to have health insurance than anyone else? Would they say the same about food? Or cell phone service? There’s nothing stopping an illegal from obtaining health insurance, so for the Dems to use them as some sort of abused minority who don’t have insurance because of their status, is a red herring. If they don’t have insurance, it’s because they didn’t buy it, for personal reasons of all kinds. The conflating of illegal immigrants and lack of health insurance is a trick in my mind.

Just a personal note re: health insurance. Our son joined the Air Force in January but wasn’t scheduled to leave for basic until June. He turned 19 in April and was dropped from our insurance plan since he wasn’t a full-time student. We bought him a “major medical” insurance plan which covered 100% after meeting a $2000.00 deductable. Cost to us, $250.00 for 6 months of coverage. That’s a little more than $40.00 per month. For people who are in our position or who are “between jobs”, something like this plan would hold them over. Why change the whole system? Help the people who need help and leave everyone else alone!
