A Labor Day tribute to the troops
posted at 9:34 am on September 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Andrew Malcolm has this posted at his LA Times Top of the Ticket blog, and it’s a winner. Labor Day celebrates the working men and women of this country, but we can’t forget the men and women who work to keep this nation and others free and secure. A big Hot Air thank you to all our fighting forces, and especially those on the front lines:
Happy Labor Day to all of our Hot Air readers!

I know it can be disappointing and depressing at times, but these men and women are fighting and putting their lives on the line for all U. S. Citizens to keep their rights, freedom, and way of life from lethal oppression.
THANK YOU, AND GOD’S SPEED!

Wow. Hard to see the keyboard. Where did all this sea water come from? Need a P-250 pump, the house is listing.
My admiration for those currently serving is boundless. I don’t think ~52% of Americans realize just how good, how noble, how effective our forces are. Russia and China certainly know; they’re changing their entire military structure to keep up with the US of A. The US military reinforces success daily.
Here’s to all those serving – my heros.
Shout out to Hawkdriver! Crew rest and good maintenance for you and your fellow warriors.

..and a moment of deeply reverent silence for Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, USMC, who lost his life in Afghanistan and had that horrible moment violated by the sensationalistic publication his picture by AP, insensitive to the wishes of the Lance Corporal’s father’s wishes.
Prayers for his family and prayers in fervent hope that all involved with that fiasco — from the idiot photographer to the editor — end up without a job starting today.

To those who chose to risk it all: There are no words that can ever really express how unutterably proud we are of you. You are the very best we have, and the success of your mission and your safe return to us are always in our hearts.
There is more to be said here, however. While the very finest of our neighbors and friends have chosen to put life and home and family, and all that life might become, on the line, we also have a job to do. We here at home are charged by their sacrifice to do everything we can do to make our country worth it. To win the battle on the far away field and loss it here at home, would be a catastrophic betrayal of epic proportion that would follow this generation to the end of time in ignominy and shame. Lincoln’s poetic admonition dogs our every step to this day:”Fellow Citizens, we cannot escape history.” And so it is today!
So while we justly praise those who stand at the tip of the spear, let us not forget the duty that their sacrifice demands of us.

I’ve never known what to say when people thank me for my service; I’ve always felt as if I’ve gotten more out of it than I’ve put in. Where else would I be able to work with, let alone be made responsible for, the finest young people in the world?
I suppose the answer is “You’re welcome.” You certainly are, but the answer seems inadequate. Especially these days, as I come close to returning to my family after an 18 month deployment, I am tremendously grateful to those of you at home who are doing so much to ensure that the Constitution I swore to defend will still be in effect when I get home.
Thank you also for remembering our families. I’ve long said that it’s my wife who deserves the thanks. My job is interesting and satisfying, and I am recognized for what I do, but my wife, who homeshools our two youngsters is the one who really sacrifices so that I can do this. The spouses are the ones who deserve your gratitude.

Ronald Reagan once said “Some men go there entire lives wondering if they made a difference in the world…Well, the Marines don’t have that problem”. I think the Gipper would gladly add all our fighting men and women to that quote as our military have performed superbly in Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other unmentionable $hitholes around the world where they have been sent to fight and spread freedom…
