The media strikes (out) again on Jones resignation

posted at 11:45 am on September 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If people relied on the mainstream media, especially print media, to keep up to date on the government, then they must have quite a shock this morning with the resignation of Van Jones.  For instance, the New York Times makes its first mention of the Jones controversy this morning — by reporting his resignation:

In a victory for Republicans and the Obama administration’s conservative critics, Van Jones resigned as the White House’s environmental jobs “czar” on Saturday.

Controversy over Mr. Jones’s past comments and affiliations has slowly escalated over several weeks, erupting on Friday with calls for his resignation.

Did the Times report it on Friday?  On Saturday?  No.  Their first print report of any controversy at all over Van Jones came today, in reporting his resignation. The Times does a credible job laying out the more substantial accusations against Jones, but there is a problem here as well:

Appointed as a special adviser for “green jobs” by President Obama, Mr. Jones did not go through the traditional vetting process for administration officials who must be confirmed by the Senate. So it was not until recently that some of Mr. Jones’s past actions received broad airing, including his derogatory statements about Republicans in February and his signature on a 2004 letter suggesting that former President George W. Bush might have knowingly allowed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to occur in order to use them as a “pre-text to war.”

Mr. Jones’s involvement in the 1990s with a group called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement prompted recent accusations by conservative critics that he associated with Communists. The group, according to a post-mortem written by some of its founders, was an anti-capitalist, antiwar organization committed to achieving “solidarity among all oppressed peoples” with “direct militant action.”

When did the 9/11 Truther connection come to light?  Jim Hoft reported it Thursday, and it flew through the blogosphere.  Even more Truther connections came out the next day.  When did the New York Times — and to be fair, most other newspapers in the country — get around to reporting in print that a paranoid conspiracy theorist had a job as a White House czar?  Today, after he quit.

Byron York gives us the round-up:

Coverage of the Jones controversy was a case study of some of the deep divisions within the media. Fox News’ Glenn Beck devoted program after program to Jones’ past, and a number of conservative blogs were responsible for finding some of Jones’ most inflammatory statements. Yet even as the controversy grew — and even after Jones himself apologized for some of his words — several of the nation’s top media outlets failed to report the story. As late as Friday, as the Jones matter began to boil over, it had not been reported at all in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the evening newscasts of ABC, CBS, and NBC. Although the Post and CBS went on to report the Jones story on Saturday, the Times did not inform its readers about the Jones matter until after Jones resigned.

So much for speaking truth to power, eh?

This reminds me very much of the lack of coverage given to Eason Jordan’s accusations of deliberate journalist assassinations by the US military in early 2005.  Jordan, a vice-president at CNN, made those accusations at a conference in Davos, Switzerland, where he thought Americans would not learn of them.  After all, if CNN doesn’t report it, does it really happen?  A reporter quoted Jordan and started a firestorm … in the blogosphere and on talk radio, which dug out more outrageous accusations and statements from Jordan.  Newspapers couldn’t be bothered to cover it, however — not until Jordan’s resignation from CNN forced them to do so.  In that case, the LA Times didn’t report it until almost 48 hours after Jordan resigned, and the New York Times only ran one wire-service report on its website prior to the resignation.

With Jordan, the assumption was that the media didn’t want to eat its own.  That same assumption could be made about their reluctance to report on Van Jones.  They have beclowned themselves a second time, and now have to answer for their silence in defense of a government official.

Blowback

Just goes to show that the internet, the blogosphere, and talk radio are actually the ones driving news and events in this country. Eventually, grudgingly, the decaying remnants of the MSM are ultimately dragged to the story and forced to note it just to retain any modicum of respect.

Oh, and some dude named Charlie somethin’-or-other said he wasn’t going to do the news on some alphabet channel the other day. Meh….

Beck has called everyone out here and not a damn moment too soon, either.

Now that there’s real journalistic and political blood in the water, the alphabet media has to either “double down” on their little protection racket, and risk being humiliated like this over and over and over, or they’ll have to throw Obama et al under their own stinkin bus.

What’s the over/under on czar resignations before the drive-by media really turns on him? For that whole crowd, Obama’s blowing it, you know.

zmdavid on September 6, 2009 at 12:00 PM

They purposely ignored the story hoping it would go away. Their sole intent was to support Van Jones. Now with his resignation they are forced to cover it with the customary “vast right wing” smear.

The question that should be asked of the MSM, why is it socially/politically acceptable to be affiliated with an ideology that killed over 70 million and enslaved over a billion while it is abhorrent, rightfully so, to be a Nazi sympathizer. Castro, a current favorite, might be per capita among the world’s greatest mass murders–all for political purposes that so many Van Jones’s agree with.

Oh, and meanwhile, Charles “Ramesses” Johnson, commenting on the resignation, doubles down on his insistance that Jones didn’t sign the Truther letter, because the Truthers said he signed it, and he doesn’t believe Truthers about anything. And if you believe what a Truther says about anything, you’re a Truther-believer, which is pretty much the same as a Truther.

Just to head off the howling mob:

As I wrote yesterday, I’m no fan of Van Jones, and won’t shed a tear if he’s forced to step down from his post.

No tears here. Just a weary disgust at what’s become of politics in America.

Another little thought. This story did not get a mention in NYT, CBS, NBC, etc. until he resigned. THEY do watch Glenn, read Michelle, and other right wing fanatics.

Herb on September 6, 2009 at 12:02 PM

I suspect the lesson the big media outlets is going to take from this is far from that they have to do a better job covering Obama’s non-vetted czar appointments, but that they have to do a better job in discrediting people like Glenn Beck or Jim Hoft.

As much as the big media has been after Beck since his move to Fox News, expect him to get the full Sarah Palin treatment after this one, with Democratic operatives probably assisting with any opposition research they can dig up.

The bottom line is – the msm didn’t report and yet he resigned. The world is too big -the internet to strong for the msm media to control what we hear and know. The big question that some brave republican in congress has to ask (if there is such a person) is how did he get appointed to the WH to begin with. As best as I can tell – Obama wasn’t deaf or 8 years old a few months ago. Will we let them get away with these were racist attacks against a brilliant man and he only resigned not to hinder the presidents important work. Or finally hold Obama’s feet to the fire for his and his appointees radical views?

Ed, you don’t have to be fair to the NYT by noting that other newspapers missed the story, too. No word from the LMSM how either the Secret Service or the FBI or the WH approved Mr. Jones despite his extremist communist activities. That is the real story underneath Mr. Jones’ being hired by Valerie Jarett and Pres Obama. Also deplorable is Howard Dean’s calling Mr. Jones a great ecoscience advisor. He was nothing but a propagandist who did nothing to create a single green job in his entire life, but the democraps are trying to make Van a martyr.
As for precursors of the lamestream media’s deplorable non coverage of Mr. Jones, we have only to go back to John Edward’s affair and love child non coverage for one year, even after the National Enquirer broke the story. When you’re a radical commie symp the lamestream media will bend over backwards to protect you. Hence their protection afforded to Pres. Obama and his cabinet and employees. I give kudos to this site, Gatewaypundit, verumserum, to Glenn Beck and to Fox News. The only thing disappointing about Fox’s Reportage is that they seem to believe that Jones is an aberration who ‘slipped under the radar’ of the WH (despite Valerie Jarett’s June 2009 DKos video to the contrary), rather than Van Jones being representative of Pres. Obama’s and his Administration’s real world view.

The question that should be asked of the MSM, why is it socially/politically acceptable to be affiliated with an ideology that killed over 70 million and enslaved over a billion while it is abhorrent, rightfully so, to be a Nazi sympathizer. Castro, a current favorite, might be per capita among the world’s greatest mass murders–all for political purposes that so many Van Jones’s agree with.

patrick neid on September 6, 2009 at 12:01 PM

Yes indeedy, Mr. Neid… why is it acceptable for “The Butcher of La Cabana” to be emblazoned on t-shirts? Why do our youth know nothing of the famine in China that Mao caused – so severe that people resorted to cannibalism? Why do we no longer teach history in our public schools?

LGF has turned into the laughing stock of blogs in the past couple of weeks.

Charles has double downed on the ban hammer this week.

Why is HA still linking to the echo chamber known as LGF?

They have beclowned themselves a second time, and now have to answer for their silence in defense of a government official.

They are above answering and beyond hope. They have terminal Obama Arrangement Syndrome. Don’t give these clowns your hard earned money, or time.

TexasJew on September 6, 2009 at 12:22 PM

I can play a troll if that helps.

-Dubya made him do it!

-Cheney made him do it!

-Palin made him do it!

-Give me my free stuff already!

-Don’t disagree with me or I’ll bite your finger off!

-Gubbermint, gubbermint, gubbermint!

-Obama’s got a pretty mouth when he’s speechifying.

Does that help any?

JoeinTX on September 6, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Now let’s get the FCC dork out of there.

Kudos to Beck.

aikidoka on September 6, 2009 at 12:23 PM

If people relied on the mainstream media, especially print media, to keep up to date on the government….

The good news is that people are relying less and less on the MSM, with ratings for ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, as well as subscriptions for the NYT, Time and Newsweek are virtually in the toilet now because people are sick of the left-leaning slant on the news and the complete lack of coverage on things like the Van Jones controversy.

Meanwhile, ratings for Fox News are through the roof, indicating that people want to get the full story on important events that affect them, instead of being fed the pablum that networks like MSNBC have to offer them.

Don’t delink it, put it in a category for unintentional humor. His Christian theocracy conspiracy theories are a riot.

zmdavid on September 6, 2009 at 12:25 PM

The mainstream media has long ago jettisoned any credibility as regards speaking truth to power. They think they are the power. “Vetting, we don’t need no stinkin’ vetting!” Whatever Obama proposes the mainstream media disposes. The mainstream media, FOX excluded, is irrelevant. They unstintingly, and continue unhesitatingly and uncritically, to champion Obama’s transformational revolution no matter what the cost because they abetted the creation of this leftist administration.

I agree.I don’t know what is going on over there lately, except that LGF getting more and more away from the stance they used to take and are now sounding more and more like HuffPo.

Jones screams “smear campaign”. Please, someone like Beck brings truth to light, Jones doesn’t like it and has his ColorofChange group boycott Beck’s sponsors, so Beck turns up the heat by giving us more facts found right off the internet. Jones lives a life of radical thinking and associations, now more people know about it and that’s a “smear campaign”?

He’ll write a book now on being a victim…….again.

pjean on September 6, 2009 at 12:27 PM

Beck needs to expose Obama and Michelle 24/7.

marklmail on September 6, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Appealing as this may sound, I don’t think it’s the right strategy. That would come off as petty. Better to go after the czars as well as the nut-job liberals in Congress, the communists in our educational systems and the dirty money behind it all (Soros, etc.).

HIT DA ROAD,BABY/BUDDY!
Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s main advisor, said the the White House was blessed to have been able to recruit this guy to their team.
What really pisses me off is the use of the line“thank you for your service”.
I reserve that line as a greeting to SOLDIERS,Sailors,Airmen,Marines,USCG, and TEXAS Rangers.

Yeah its time for HotAir and others to de-link from LGF.He hates Beck,Palin,Tea partiers,Health care opponents, etc etc.He turned on a dime after obama won…showing he’s a total fake. And the way hes gone after ACE,among others, shows what a turncoat he is.And now hes trying to compare some guy, supposedly a truther(and a nobody),who was one of 20 speakers at a cincinnati tea party,to Van jones.

THIS from Juan Williams this morning on Fox News:

“He was a mid-level appointee. He doesn’t matter. Why are we talking about him on a Sunday morning?”

Am I wrong in remembering reading this man had a 30 BILLION DOLLAR budget?
