“Meet the Press” finds the big lesson in the Van Jones story: You can’t trust the Internet

posted at 6:24 pm on September 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

You have to see it to believe it. The singular lesson of the past week, after big media failed to uncover Jones’s Truther past and then actively suppressed it when it broke online, is that they can’t be trusted to chase stories that are inconvenient to The One — especially if doing so would burnish Glenn Beck’s credibility. And yet here they are, through two of their priestlier representatives, warning the public that only a fool would play in the “open sewer” that is the Internet, where lies and smears and video clips that the networks won’t show of Obama administration officials calling Republicans “assholes” flow insidiously onward. Plenty of viewers will believe them, too: Remember, for many, their first taste of the Van Jones story came this morning, and no sooner did they hear about it than a trusted figure like Tom Brokaw appeared to dismiss it as a smear campaign. You couldn’t script a more Orwellian ending. Friedman actually goes so far as to call this a cautionary tale about how everyone’s a potential target in the age of mass media. Hey, Tom? He’s a Truther in charge of $60 billion in taxpayer money. We’re not talking about some alderman here who got caught saying something off-color at the Dairy Queen. Quoth Jonah Goldberg: “What a tragedy that fewer people will support cop-killers and anti-American conspiracy groups because of poor Van Jones chilling effect on the culture.”

Oh, and speaking of whitewashes, the White House wants you to believe that they didn’t know about any of it.

A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a personnel matter, said Sunday that Jones’s past was not studied as intensively as other advisers because of his relatively low rank.

Jones’s position, for example, did not require Senate confirmation. So he avoided the kind of vetting Cabinet officials were subjected to…

“He was not as thoroughly vetted as other administration officials,” the official said. “It’s fair to say there were unknowns.”

Valerie Jarrett seemed pretty excited about him, so presumably she had an inkling about his past. But even if they’re telling the truth and somehow the multiple-page questionnaire all administration officials are required to fill out wasn’t broad enough to catch, ahem, Trutherism, this is nothing less than a confession by the White House that its czars might very well be unsavory characters with skeletons in their closets. Why vet them if they don’t have to pass the Senate, right? And if you do vet them and conclude that they can’t pass the Senate — as almost certainly happened with Jones — then just make them a czar and the problem is solved. It’s not like Tom Brokaw or Tom Friedman is going to hassle you. Exit quotation from Glenn Beck: “The American people stood up and demanded answers. Instead of providing them, the Administration had Jones resign under cover of darkness.” Click the image to watch.

I’m ashamed of these elder , so called journalists. Shame on them, for derelect of their duties, and the need for them to keep on top of Washington, for the people.

You are a miniscule of what you once were, Tom. As are all those once apon a time journalists. You reap what you sow, and one day, it will come back to haunt you. It already has, since their numbers of viewers are tanking.

Yes, some will watch, but most don’t believe, and know they can no longer trust the msm’s, to bring them honest news, that protects them, and not the White House.

Exactly, the point to this story is not who brought it up first or who dragged it across the goal line. The point to this story is who the subject of the story was and what he was.

thomasaur on September 6, 2009 at 7:08 PM

NBC, CBS and CNN have been taken over by left wing radicals. Real journalists no longer work there.

Some journalists still survive at ABC, but they are relegated to blogs and online versions. I suspect they imagine they are still working for real news outfits.

Radicals have assumed power at most universities, and newspapers as well.

Is this OK with everyone?

faraway on September 6, 2009 at 7:08 PM

Well, yes, you see, if information isn’t properly fact checked by trained, professional journalists supervising interns doing the actual research then the unreliable information can not be broadcast.

In fact, it is such a difficult task that just holding a BS degree from one of those farm schools in the Midwest isn’t enough. At least, not without years of experience under the close supervision of another, older, wiser trained and experienced journalist.

Look how they react to the Van Jones nomination as a czar.

Remember the media outcry when they claim that Palin was not properly vetted?

Antagonist on September 6, 2009 at 7:11 PM

It’s just like them to claim that real journalist must attend school to get the basics like propaganda 101,201 and brainwashing 300 and 400 level courses so that one can properly vet the facts.

Same thing when it comes to lawyering, they force you to go to special schools to become captive audience for their retarded view of the law and how it should be used to change society.

Just how long have these propagandists been filtering the facts to the American public prior to the internet?

Good thing I ate prior to watching but of course I’ll have to swalllow some Pepto to prevent it from coming up.

larvcom on September 6, 2009 at 7:12 PM

Remember Brokaw and Charlie Rose on the lack of vetting of Obama by the media?

CHARLIE ROSE: I don’t know what Barack Obama’s worldview is.

TOM BROKAW: No, I don’t, either.

CHARLIE ROSE: I don’t know how he really sees where China is.

TOM BROKAW: We don’t know a lot about Barack Obama and the universe of his thinking about foreign policy.

http://speaknowamerica.org/2008/11/01/tom-brokaw-theres-a-lot-we-dont-know-about-obama.aspx

Apparently, Brokaw is not only a “see no evil” monkey, but he doesn’t want anyone else to see it either.

applebutter on September 6, 2009 at 7:12 PM

THEY want to be the vetters, and until the internet, the MSM had the power to filter out anything that didn’t fit their narrative.

Wethal on September 6, 2009 at 7:04 PM

True, but only to a point. They still have enough power, as evidenced by how they got O’bama elected in 2008.

They also, despite the internet, managed to brainwash a majority of Americans into believing that Katrina was all Bush’s fault. They brilliantly shifted the blame from the inept Democrats in Louisiana to Chimpy in D.C.

huckelberry on September 6, 2009 at 7:14 PM

“…Tom Brokaw appeared to dismiss it as a smear campaign.”

Even if Brokaw thought this is true, a real journalist wouldn’t have stopped there. He would have at least asked what made it a smear? And why didn’t the Obama Administration fight the smear? After all, if they are only smears then such attacks will not stop until they are proved lies. No matter what the situation, serious journalist don’t stop questioning and searching until they are satisfied the complete story is known. They don’t simply jump to defend an administration’s position unbidden. But then again there haven’t been true journalist on NBC in decades.

JiangxiDad on September 6, 2009 at 7:34 PM

Brokaw’s and Freidman’s predecessors, about 500 or so years ago, were no doubt bemoaning the invention of the printing press. Instead of the written record being limited to the scholarly elite (not that the upper class was always that literate), now any vulgar burgher with a primary school education and some money could read books just like the scholars. And start thinking for himself.

The MSM is losing its credibility at an ever increasing rate. This fiasco just highlights their rank hypocrisy when it comes to using the Internet as a source for leads and information. On one hand you have them chiding the public about listening the storey’s and news that come form the Internet and blogosphere when its about a cause or group that they support, like claiming that the likes of Van Jones were smeared with rumor and innuendo propagated by partisan bloggers. Yet they are perfectly happy to report as fact the wildest tales and straight out lies about someone like Sarah Palin on a regular basis using the flimsy excuse that if she didn’t want this sort of thing to happen she should never have run for national office.

aikidoka on September 6, 2009 at 7:50 PM

In the state-run media, it isn’t true unless it is first released by the ministry of propaganda.

highhopes on September 6, 2009 at 7:51 PM

The MSM wants us to listen to media darling Levi Johnston for insight to a family he disowned; yet admonish citizen journalists for uncovering facts about cabinet-level officials?

Which more resembles an open sewer?

Ah, but you seem to miss their point. It was an end-run around the MSM, and therefore there’s a flag on the play.

JiangxiDad on September 6, 2009 at 7:52 PM

Real lesson of the Truther Jones story:
The traditional media have lost all credibility with the American public and are rapidly becoming irrelevant.

I had my dog vetted and he bit me.

huckelberry hound on September 6, 2009 at 7:16 PM

Fixed!

Del Dolemonte on September 6, 2009 at 7:54 PM

Just how long have these propagandists been filtering the facts to the American public prior to the internet?

Good thing I ate prior to watching but of course I’ll have to swalllow some Pepto to prevent it from coming up.

larvcom on September 6, 2009 at 7:12 PM

Since the early 60′s when they began teaching aspiring journalists that is was their obligation to not just give the facts but to also properly interpret the facts.

chemman on September 6, 2009 at 7:55 PM

They actually believe it is not the truth unless THEY are the ones who say it.

Elizabetty on September 6, 2009 at 7:51 PM

Not only that but we’re fools if we don’t take them at their word.

Agree, but doesn’t the secret service have to protect the President. Isn’t there some secret service and or FBI agent who cares enough about his country to explain how it is that dangerous people are consorting with the President? Surely the Pres. was told by his security detail. What was the President’s response?

We’re looking at Texas and Tennessee. No income taxes and warmer climes, the latter the missus’ preference.

You are a miniscule of what you once were, Tom.

Well, he was a hugely partisan hack, so now he’s a miniscule one. Yes, I can agree to that.

DrAllecon on September 6, 2009 at 7:56 PM

You know, I want a job as a White house vetter. You obviously don’t have to do much work and the pays great. Great benefits too!

You’re missing a crucial point here. Van Jones, the radical racist was not filling a cabinet-level position. He was one of the many unconfirmed staff hires made by the filthy liar in the White House. They don’t have to be vetted and confirmed by the Senate. Their only loyalty is to the rat bastard traitor who hired them. With the czars, the filthy liar has essentially created a shadow cabinet whose only interest is pleasing the boss. It is decidedly Unconstitutional.

Van Jones next Gov of NJ I can see it now! God help us

Yup and yup. Nashville too. Texas would be good too, but I’m not sure we’d choose such hot weather, all other things being equal (which I realize they may not be.)

JiangxiDad on September 6, 2009 at 7:57 PM

“Meet the Press” finds the big lesson in the Van Jones story: You can’t trust the Internet

I agree that you can’t trust the Internet. You also can’t trust the MSM. And you can’t trust anyone who’s closed minded about an idea or a person, especially when there’s lots of power or money at stake, and most especially when they’re in politics or one of its subsidiaries.

So, you have to actually think in each case, and examine the reporters and the evidence, regardless of whether they’re in the MSM or alternative media. In the case of Van Jones, the evidence was overwhelming and easily verified. The fact that most in the MSM chose to spike it, then attempt to rationalize it after his resignation, speaks volumes about their own lack of credibility and trustworthiness.

This case needs to be kept nearby at all times to evaluate reporters for years to come. What did you report? And when did you report it?

Loxodonta on September 6, 2009 at 7:58 PM

The MSM is WORSE than Pravda during the height of the Stalin years in the Soviet Union. The Soviet press wrote obsequious lies about Staling because they had to. Our press is writing oseqious lies about our current tin pot dictator because they want to.

This President’s political career started in the living room of a domestic terrorist and cop killer. If you were to eliminate all the unsavory anti-American people, the filthy liar would be all alone save for his spoiled kids, the racist wife, and Bo.

SC.Charlie on September 6, 2009 at 8:00 PM

OK . . . now, let’s see if I have this right . . . Van Jones is driving the bus . . . Van Jones gets off the bus and throws himself under the bus . . . Yep! That’s right! That’s all it took. I watched just about every YouTube there was about Van Jones and he didn’t think anyone would notice? Americans are a great bunch of people! I love us!
