Obama theme: incompetence?

posted at 11:20 am on September 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Mark Tapscott picks up the thread of yesterday’s Obamateurism and follows it back through the first seven months of the Barack Obama presidency. The failure to check with school districts on start dates before scheduling a national address to “schoochildren” is not an isolated fumble by the administration headed by the novice executive. It’s becoming a pattern of incompetence, which can be seen at all levels:

Now, the school speech was poorly thought out, both in concept and execution. The same can be said of Obama’s recurring unsuccessful attempts over the summer to “reframe the health care reform debate,” and the multiple mis-steps in responding to his Town Hall critics, beginning with the spectacularly inept branding of them as an “angry mob.”…

The lesson here is that the political ear that warns of potential mis-steps in a campaign is not the same one that works once you are elected and have to make the thousand decisions that come with daily governance of a central government that long ago become far too big and expansive to be effectively managed. This is why administration officials approach projects like the school speech without anticipating the explosion of negative public reaction.

So expect in coming months a growing theme in the media questioning the competence of those around the president. For liberals in Congress and the media, such a theme will provide a handy way of diverting blame from Obama’s shoulders for the succession of blunders, misteps and embarrassments that is surely coming.

How has this theme surfaced?  It would be impossible to count them all, but we can get them into broad themes:

  • Personnel – Barack Obama’s appointments have been a continuing source of embarrassment.  His Treasury Secretary blamed Turbo-Tax for his tax evasion, but several more appointments also had tax problems.  Obama nominated Bill Richardson to Commerce knowing full well of the pay-for-play probe in New Mexico that forced Richardson to withdraw his name a few weeks later.  Van Jones, the Green Jobs Czar, is just the latest example of fumbled vetting that has plagued this White House since the transition.
  • Economics – Remember when Obama told the nation that a $787 billion stimulus package would keep unemployment from getting above 8%?  Remember when Obama told the nation that his administration had shaved $2 trillion off of the projected ten-year deficit?  Remember when Obama promised that he would speed up stimulus spending this summer?  None of those came to pass, which is why Obama hopes you’ve forgotten all of that.
  • Politics – One might have thought Obama would have learned from the debacle of the stimulus package that he needed to lead, rather than follow Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.  Instead, he passed the buck on health-care reform and wound up losing control of the health-care debate.  Indeed, Obama made it worse by cheering on Pelosi and Reid, demanding that Congress bend to their wills and vote on an overhaul of 1/6th of the American economy with just a handful of days for debate.  This week, seven months after his inauguration, Obama’s press flacks announced with great fanfare that Obama would finally draft a proposal himself — as if he were President, or something!

Who could have warned us that a man who served seven years in the state legislature and three years in the Senate would not have been prepared for the toughest executive position in the Free World?  We did.  Repeatedly.  So did John McCain, and for that matter, so did Hillary Clinton.

Mark predicts that the follies of Porkulus will give us plenty of instances of incompetence from this administration in the coming months, and he’s almost certainly right.  I don’t think we’ll have to go that far, though, if the pattern of the first seven months continues.

Incompetence?

Would this not indicate that Obama HAD competence at one time?

The man has NEVER done anything, accomplished anything, other than spend other people’s money.

GarandFan on September 5, 2009 at 1:39 PM

Van Jones, the Green Jobs Czar, is just the latest example of fumbled vetting that has plagued this White House since the transition.

You are assuming that Jones was not vetted. Barack Obama has a strikingly similar background and was elected to the Presidency of the United States. Why should the White House have any concern about Jones? Plus, Jones gives them their ace advantage: the ability to lob racism bombs at any critics.

Ed, Ed, Ed, Ed, Ed, (and AP), I’m not going to say there’s not a feces load of incompetence in the Obama administration, but you both keep attributing to incompetence what is clearly calculated malice.

For example, the $787 failed to stimulate the economy because it was designed to pay off cronies and DAMAGE the economy. They didn’t speed up spending because that would be counterproductive to the purpose of the package.

Another example: No off-shore drilling or new nuclear power plants — is that incompetence or ideology? No. The radical fascist/communist plan is for us to get caught with our pants down when an Israeli attack on Iran sends the price of oil through the roof.

Bottom line: They want a massive crisis in this country to use as an excuse to usurp enough power to transform the country into Venezuela.

As David Horowitz said, it is ALL ABOUT POWER

I don’t think anybody is arguing the points you’ve made…all correct. The fact that Obama is a maxist pushing a radical agenda does not mean he’s not incompetent in trying to execute it. He’s selling socialism in the dumbest way possible…Obama’s fumbling and bumbling has almost completely shut his agenda down in 7 months. He’s struggling while completely owning 2/3s of the Government because he has not been able to deliver one single benefit to the country. And people have begun to notice.

AUINSC on September 5, 2009 at 2:11 PM

That’s the contradiction, though. If he delivered one single benefit to the country, THAT would indicate he’s incompetent at his goal — forcing the country into crisis.

He’s not trying to sell socialism at all. I almost wouldn’t mind it if he did. I’d much rather Obama get on TV and try to convince me that socialism/fascism is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I wouldn’t buy any of it, but at least I could admire him for being honest about his agenda.

But instead, he’s trying to manipulate circumstances such that he can force socialism/fascism on the USA whether we like it or not. And so far he’s done an excellent job. Government now owns banks, insurance, car companies and is driving us into unsustainable debt. AND he’s setting us up for a massive energy and security crisis.

Personally, I think it’s Soros pulling the strings, and Obama is just a useful idiot. But I see very few signs of incompetence at driving the country into the ground in order to “rescue” it by seizing power.

Obama theme: incompetence?

No. Incompetence carries no moral judgement. A deep abiding hate of America and everything American, malevolence, stupidity, belligerence, and nihilism – in that order. Incompetence is just a sub-theme.

MB4 on September 5, 2009 at 2:53 PM

One more thing about selling socialism by doing at least a little to benefit the country? Read about the Cloward-Piven strategy. That is the spirit of what he’s doing.

Now – note carefully this point:

One of the goals of Cloward-Piven is to destroy capitalism by overwhelming the government with welfare and other service demands. This throws the government into crisis. The radicals then “come to the rescue” by seizing enough power to reshape things the way they want.

BUT DON’T MISS THIS POINT The point is to use SOCIALISM (welfare demands, etc.) to create the crisis!! They’re not trying to sell socialism. They’re not even trying to destroy capitalism in order to usher in a “better” system. The whole point is to seize power. That’s even very openly what Alinsky says in his book Rules for Radicals. The whole point of the book is to teach people how to use community organizing to SEIZE POWER.

It’s all about power.

As Obamoleon was deceiving the neighboring children he was also tricking his own sheeple. The scapegoat was again Snowbush. Whenever anything went wrong it became usual to attribute it to SnowBush. In fact many of the claims begin to sound ridiculous to the objective mind. Of course, Squealer Rahm’s mission is to keep everything subjective in the minds of the sheeple.

The Democrat party was on the ropes, having been battered by Eugene McCarthy, Carter, and Clinton, only to be rescued by RINOs and weak-arsed, greedy Republican politicians.

Why, in the world, would anyone expect anything different from a person with no executive experience, very little legislative experience, and God only knows what sort of learning experience. We know he learned a great deal about life in America every Sunday for 20 years. We know that you meet a lot of problem solvers, being a community organizer.

If we had a working press corps, in this country, we’d know all of this stuff about Obama and he would have had a difficult time getting elected. Instead, we have a press corps that has covered up all his weaknesses (and continues to do so) and tries to make those pointing them out to be the villains.

Anyone who would pick Rahm Emanuel for a Chief of Staff has not clue how to legislate or administrate. Rahm Emanuel is effective at neither and his tactics, if you can call them that, are more successful in the mafia than they are in more polite circles of society.

2010 is around the corner so Obama could end up geting lucky, like Clinton, where he can do something successful in his final 2 years, rather than accomplishing nothing for 4 years.

The runaway deficit train of Congress and the WH is actually going to speed up. A cursory examination of the key economic indicators – employment, real estate, auto sales and bank balance sheets – clearly show that “green shoots” are dependent on continued USG largesse. Second quarter GDP actually declined by an annualized 6 percent, rather than the publicized decline of 1 percent, if one time government bailouts and stimuli are removed. Continuing declines in commercial and residential real estate, [at best] stagnation in employment-avg hours worked-income, forced deleveraging-savings-frugality will lock up any chance of recovery within the next 12 months. What do the Dems do as the Congressional elections approach in 2010? You guessed it – Porkulus II. The hundreds of pages of that Frankenstein legislation are probably being written in some dim, dank, underground hideaway as we speak. If you think ObamaCare and cap & tax have been contentious, just wait for that one to stride into public view.

boqueronman on September 5, 2009 at 7:23 PM

Incompetence or competence are both beside the point to a Marxist.

The point is to create chaos, out of which a new order will arise.

Some people still want to believe this is all politics as usual. It is not.

When one has the majority of the press in this country pandering, and glowing over such incompetence, it isn’t hard to fathom why Obama just keeps trudging along as he does.

Look at Biden, again claiming the stimulus created, or saved a million jobs. We all know that’s balderdash, but he says it, because he knows the media has his back. Yes, Fox is far, and away the best to watch right now. If it leans right…fine. We know a majority of the media leans left, but at least they’re watching the backs of the people, and not a corrupt administration.

Incompetence, yes. But it’s all done in the name of a suck up media, hell bent on protecting, defending, and pandering to a man, and not the constitution, or their integrity.

His handling of Detroit should not be left out of the incompetence discussion…With the auto-industry teetering on bankruptcy he raised mileage standards. Something that would costs billions in research, development, test and evaluation to implement. Essentially, he moved the goalpost on an exhausted team…Absolutely unprecedented! Furthermore, his lawyers and compliant judges allowed him to steal GM and Chrysler from bondholders and turn over large controlling shares to the parasites in the UAW…The bondholders should have been the secured debt-holders in a legal bankruptcy proceeding as opposed to the kangaroo courts that administered Chrysler and GM. This guy probably has had these ideas for years and like a teenager who finally gets the keys to the family sedan he was finally getting to put his grand plans to work. His actions have ceded market share to Japan and Korea by default and it won’t be coming back…Ford will probably survive but word has it that GM will survive only a few years as Obama’s bastard baby…
