Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on September 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama decided to hold a mass indoctrination session national speech for schoolchildren — er, excuse me, “schoochildren“ – on the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 8th. The White House wanted all schools to carry the live address in order to use it as a teaching moment. Instead, Obama may have made this a learning moment for himself to do a little research before scheduling an event.
Baseball Crank (link mine):
But I’m from New York. When I mentioned this speech to my wife, her immediate reaction was that Obama wasn’t looking at the calendar: the New York City schools, public and private, aren’t even in session yet the day after Labor Day. Obama’s effort to roll this into a massive PR blitz with the following day’s health care speech to a joint session of Congress will fail in my neck of the woods because nobody paid attention to the school calendar.
Moe Lane discovers that Boston and Los Angeles won’t be in session, either:
In Boston, where the union contract does not allow teachers to report to work until after Labor Day, classes will not begin until Thursday, Sept. 10, which allows for two training days before students arrive.
Los Angeles USD has its students arriving on September 9th, presumably for the same reason. Seattle also starts school on the 9th. Same for Buffalo, NY and Arlington NY, too. Same for Eugene, OR. And all of this only took me an hour to check.
I guess Obama won’t be talking about the importance of research in his speech.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Hmmm, well much like Solidarność, it may appear that some of these teachers unions are unhelpful in getting our children
indoctrinatededucated. Perhaps a little governmenttake overintervention is needed, just as with GM & Chrysler.See America, Dear Leader is bipartisan, not only is He willing to take on big business, He’s also willing to take on big union to further his goal of
consolidation of powermaking America better!Do it for the children’s sake!

Some states have their school districts on such tight academic standards that they cannot vary from the curriculum or they may sacrifice their own state scores.
As far as the LAUSD, the fewer days the schools are in session the better for the kids. That is one bad district.

Too funny. If you’re ten years old and this is your last day of freedom before school starts, the last place you would be is in front of the television listening to a political speech. I would have to be dragged inside kicking and screaming.

Since Mr. Obama is so brilliant and has such an astounding personal story, it must be that he only wanted to speak to specific children, in areas where the school has already started. No, I don’t really believe that but if he is too smart to be wrong, as the media constantly tells us, then there has to be another explanation.

D2Boston on September 4, 2009 at 8:40 AM
I suspect that Obama chose a day before any 9/11 remembrance ceremony so that his words would not be overshadowed by that event. Looks like his strategy backfired. However, as pointed out in comments above, it is virtually certain that sympathetic NEA teachers and principals will have their students watch and discuss a tape of the speech once their schools are up and running.
jwolf on September 4, 2009 at 8:41 AM
Can’t wait for the media spin on this one. This is why Obama and his drive-by cronies should’ve kept their traps shut last month when unemployment “dropped” to 9.4%. Now they look like even bigger jackasses.

Presidents come and go, but Old Glory remains our Star Spangled Banner.
First day at school, we began learning the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Obama will celebrate 60 years of Communist authoritarian rule over Red China, not at their Embassy but at OUR White House. This is the government that tortures its citizens, imprisons them over an IDEA CALLED LIBERTY, murders them and harvests their body parts for international export sales. Van Jones has gotta love it. Zelaya’s likely invited to attend along with all the officiating South American commie dictators.
Speaking of Honduras, on Bill Bennett’s Morning in America with Rick Santorum, a Leftist caller said that the Honduran Constitution lacked relevance and credibility because it was written not that long ago when the current non-dictatorial Honduran Constitutional Government was established during Reagan’s administration. So on one hand, a Constitution is meaningless because it isn’t old enough (Honduras) while on the other hand a Constitution is meaningless because it is too old (USA) to bear relevance any longer. All the while, Socialism is every bit as ancient as our Constitution since Rousseau was Washington’s contemporary, one in France, the other in America.

What I don’t get is why the silence? Our schools have been in session for a week and a half. My district sends blast faxes, blast voicemails, emails, flyers, phone calls for the most frivolous stuff…but nothing about this “program”. If its such a wonderful thing for our children to participate in and his message so innocuous, then why the silence from the school districts?
Hmmmmmmmm…

No variation tolerated.
Children do not have a 60-minute attention span. Never did.
This administration never wastes an opportunity to ravage innocence. Perhaps a profitable side effect of the 60-minute attention marathon is to test the pharmaceutical affect on the juvenile brain/behavior. There’s a huge Behavioral Science House Bill underway at the moment that no one’s noticed yet.

The scheduling is fitting. The same administration scheduled Cash 4 Clunkers during the time when most dealers were having sales in order to clear older models from their showroom floors in prep for the new year models.
In essence, Barry’s Team flooded the market with additional buyers, relieving the dealers from having to make any deep discounts.

Here in the Bay Area, most schools started last week. But when is the President’s speech? There’s a three-hour difference between D.C. and the West Coast; five hours for Alaska & Hawaii. How is this speech going to be carried “Live” during all school hours across the nation?
BTW, I asked DD#2, a junior in high school, if she’s heard anything about listening to the speech. She hadn’t. The most logical time for her to watch this speech would be during U.S. History class or if the school pulls all the classes together in the gym at one time. 1400 teens watching the President speak… Yeah, that will work. ;)
