School districts deluged with phone calls from parents angry about Obama’s speech

posted at 9:16 pm on September 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

Rod Dreher heard about it anecdotally this morning, but what he calls the righty “crazybomb” has now exploded with full force:

Schools don’t have to show it. But districts across the country have been inundated with phone calls from parents and are struggling to address the controversy that broke out after Education Secretary Arne Duncan sent a letter to principals urging schools to watch.

Districts in states including Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia, Wisconsin have decided not to show the speech to students. Others are still thinking it over or are letting parents have their kids opt out…

“As far as I am concerned, this is not civics education — it gives the appearance of creating a cult of personality,” said Oklahoma state Sen. Steve Russell. “This is something you’d expect to see in North Korea or in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.”

PTA council president Cara Mendelsohn said Obama is “cutting out the parent” by speaking to kids during school hours.

“Why can’t a parent be watching this with their kid in the evening?” Mendelsohn said. “Because that’s what makes a powerful statement, when a parent is sitting there saying, ‘This is what I dream for you. This is what I want you to achieve.’”

Presumptive answer to her question: Because far fewer kids (and parents) are going to want to watch in the evening. People get grumpy when an Obama speech on something important preempts the primetime schedule; does she really believe they’re going to turn off “CSI” to watch The One drone on about education? I think kids can handle 20 minutes alone with him. Besides, if the boss is right that the real threat here will be teachers using this as a pretext for more politicized lessons going forward, what does it matter if the kids watch Obama or not? It’s what comes later that’s the concern.

More from Politico:

“The gist is, ‘I want to see what the president has to say before you expose it to my child.’ Another said, ‘This is Marxist propaganda.’ They are very hostile,” said Patricia O’Neill, a Democrat who is vice president of the Montgomery County School Board, in a district that borders Washington, D.C. “I think it’s disturbing that people don’t want to hear the president, but we live in a diverse society.”…

Six districts contacted by POLITICO all said they would leave it to local school superintendents, principals and teachers whether to show the speech – but all said they would provide alternative activities for students whose parents didn’t want them to see the broadcast…

Obama isn’t the first president to be criticized this way. O’Neill recalled President George H. W. Bush made televised address to students in October 1991 as campaign season was heating up. A handful of Democrats denounced Bush’s address as pure politics. Bush asked students to “take control” of their education and to write him a letter about ways students could help him achieve his goals, strikingly similar to Obama’s messages.

Newsbusters remembered Bush’s address this morning — and also remembered that lefty darling Dick Gephardt was very concerned about it indeed (“The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president”). Reagan did it too, according to Tapper, although it’s unclear in both cases how widely televised the speeches were. The most amazing thing about this story to me is Tapper’s assertion that the White House was “caught flat-footed” by the outcry, which is certainly true given how quickly they moved to revise the prep materials. Do they not watch Glenn Beck or listen to Limbaugh? Is Andrew Sullivan really their primary source for how grassroots conservatives view the administration? They’re entitled to have as much contempt as they like for righty suspicions about creeping authoritarianism as government expands, but those suspicions are a fact of political life. Seven months into The One’s term, only a moron would fail to anticipate the reaction at this point.

I am more convinced than ever that getting rid of Obama will be a fight to the death and I mean that literally, with Sarah Palin in the middle of everything.

Obama’s #1 goal presently is to eliminate her. As we get closer to the 2010 midterms he will employ more drastic means to achieve this goal if he hasn’t got rid of her by then. Obama has too much on the line to fail. He is not going to allow a hockey mom bring him down and destroy everything that Far Left has planned in the last 40 years. Also George Soros will not allow him to fail, if you get what I mean.

I just worry that John Ziegler may be right. He claims that the Far Left knows it’s in a war while the right thinks it’s going to a picnic. What they do is bring a pocket knife to a gun fight. I pray that the right wises up and realizes how dangerous Obama and his Marxist friends are and they will resort to anything or any tactic or strategy to keep Obama in office.

It was History teachers who developed the current California State History Standards and Objectives. If you have a problem with when something is taught take it up with them. It is not the fault of the School or local teachers that slavery doesn’t get taught until sometime in the 5th grade.
BTW I taught in 3 different districts in S. Cal before I left for Arizona in 2007. Conservatives at any of the Schools I taught in amounted to about 5% or less of the teaching staff and administrators. 60 – 70% diehard NEA liberals and the rest moderates. Students continually asked me why I didn’t birdwalk during class and talk about social issues etc. like their other teachers. My answer was always they were in my class to learn chemistry not what I thought about social issues.

Neither circumvented school superintendents around the country, going straight to union-affiliated school principals, to distribute a creepy study guide, which invariably had to be revised once the firestorm hit.

Apples and oranges: speeches by true Americans compared to a speech by a guy who hires Van Jones.

No offense to parents here, but why are your kids still in public schools? I don’t even have my own kids, but I am using my money to pay for my niece’s kid’s private school tuition. That is how strongly I believe we can NOT let our kids be indoctrinated by these rabid lefty teachers in the public schools. Unfortunately, my niece and her husband have had hard financial times here in MI and they would be stuck in public school without my help. She has a toddler and one on the way. NONE of those kids are going to be in public school if I have to start delivering pizza for extra cash to pay their tuition. And I am the daughter of a retired public teacher who is a reflex D voter, no matter what.

It is one thing to play the old tired game of “they did it too,” and another to ignore the fact that the “O” has lesson plans (government schools and he’s the commander in chief of the government schools?) And then there’s the issue of the “O” wanting that civilian army…

However, I do blame Bush for centralizing, what should be local control, with his “no child left behind.”

By the way, every major dictator “does it too.”

With my stepkids, we have no choice. Although hubby has joint custody, their mother has primary. So the school choice is up to her, although honestly if I thought she could afford it I think she would send them to private school herself.

As far as my own son — if I can afford it by the time he’s in school, I’ll most likely pay for him to go to private school since my school district is “in need of improvement.”

I think most parents would send their kids to private schools if better than the public systems. And here’s where I think that the public, after beating back state seizure of healthcare, need to make it clear that there be school vouchers and the ability to send your kids to the best school available.

All the same arguments being thrown around by the filthy lair can be revamped for this debate. School vouchers would give greater choice and portability. What do the public schools have to worry about if they are already providing the best product available?- vouchers would only serve to keep them honest. We have to do something now because doing nothing would be worse…. All the same arguments used for seizing healthcare can be used to get rid of the NEA’s stronghold on education.

My district in Michigan is also not showing the speech. Of course we live in a conservative county (OK nobody snicker -some parts of Michigan are conservative just not enough of the state to elect competent Senators). Here’s the direct quote from the e-mail:

“We will not be participating in the showing of the speech. Instructional time is very short during a school year and we want to make sure we value every second of the time we have to deliver curriculum. We will leave whether or not you want your children to see the speech up to you. Have a safe and happy labor day weekend.”

The Hitler Youth

Jungsturm Adolf Hitler

Hitler Youth Propaganda poster

In 1920, Adolf Hitler, authorized the formation of a Youth League of the National Socialist Workers’ Party (NSDAP) based upon the principles of an earlier German youth group known as as the Wandervögel. The Wandervögel (translated as “Migratory Bird”) were the German equivalent of the Boy Scouts of America and the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Wandervögel members had an idealistic, romantic notion of the past, yearning for simpler days when people lived off the land. Wandervögel members distinguished themselves by wearing shorts and hiking boots rather than the starched shirts and creased trousers of the middle class. They believed in the importance of rediscovering nature without any modern conveniences. They sang old German folk songs around the campfire and greeting each other by saying “Heil.”

This new Nazi Youth League attracted very few members at first, competing against numerous other well-established youth groups, and following the failed Munich Beer Hall Putsch and Hitler’s arrest, the Youth League of the NSDAP had been outlawed.

Adolf Hitler with one of the Hitler Youth boys

However with Hitler’s release from prison and the resurgence of the NSDAP, a new Nazi Youth Party was established and headed by Gustav Lenk. In May 1922 Lenk held a beer hall meeting in Munich, to officially proclaim the foundation of League. The Nazi Youth League was formally established small units were created in Nuremberg and other cities.

The growth of the League was slow at first, and in 1922 assistance came from the party newspaper the Völkischer Beobachter which now called for new members, declaring:

“We demand that the National Socialist Youth, and all other young Germans, irrespective of class or occupation, between fourteen and eighteen years of age, whose hearts are affected by the suffering and hardships afflicting the Fatherland, and who later desire to join the ranks of the fighters against the Jewish enemy, the sole originator of our present shame and suffering, enter the Youth League of the NSDAP…”

In May 1923, Lenk published the first Nazi youth magazine, Nationale Jungsturm, which proved to be a money loser and was subsequently diminished to being merely a supplement of the Völkischer Beobachter.

Gustav Lenk maintained strong convictions on exactly how the League should be managed, and soon had a falling out with the party and its leader Adolf Hitler.

Hitler greets members of the Arbeiterjugend

Hitler would tolerate no insurrection within the ranks and Lenk was soon discredited by the party on trumped up charges that he was a traitor and petty thief. Lenk had no recourse and was eventually removed from all party functions and replaced by Kurt Gruber.

Kurt Gruber, who impressed Hitler with his zeal and organizational talent was officially proclaimed as its first leader. On July 4,1926 at a Nazi party rally On Sunday, Gruber’s Greater German Youth Movement was renamed as the Hitler Jugend, with the official name being:

Hitler-Jugend, Bund deutscher Arbeiterjugend (Hitler Youth, League of German Worker Youth)

The Hitler Youth was born!

The Hitler Youth is born

When it originally began, the Hitler Youth was Munich-based only. In 1923, the organization had a little over one thousand members. In 1925, the membership grew to over 5,000. Five years later, national Hitler Youth membership stood at 25,000. By the end of 1932 (a few weeks before the Nazis came to power) it was at 107,956. At the end of 1933, the Hitler Youth had 2,300,000 members.

Kurt Gruber organized the corps under adult leaders, and the general membership comprised boys aged fourteen to eighteen. Gruber initiated new guidelines stipulating that all Hitler Youth members over age 18 had to be Nazi Party members; appointments to high ranking positions required Party approval and Hitler Youths must obey all commands issued by any Nazi Party leader.

Banne Flag of the Hitler Youth

By the end of 1927, a further requirement was that Hitler Youths turning 18 had to join the storm troopers. However, this resulted in a shortage of trained leaders within the upper echelons of the Hitler Youth. The Youth Committee of the NSDAP then worked out an arrangement with the SA allowing valuable members to stay in the Hitler Youth past age 18.

The basic unit of the Hitler Youth was the Banne, the equivalent of a military regiment. There were more than 300 throughout Germany, each of a strength of about 6000 youths. Every unit carried a flag of almost identical design, but the individual Bann was identified by its number, displayed in black on a yellow scroll above the eagle’s head. The flags measured 200 cm long by 145 cm high.

Baldur von Schirach

At the end of 1928, Gruber called for a meeting of the entire Hitler Youth leadership to streamline the organization. That meeting resulted in the addition of a new department for boys aged 10 to 14, later known as the Jungvolk. A separate branch was established for girls, later called the Bund Deutscher Mädel, the League of German Girls, or BDM.

By 1931 Gruber himself ran into difficulties with high ranking members within the NSDAP over his management of the Hitler Youth. He came under fire by SA leader Ernst Röhm who felt the Hitler Youth should be subordinated to the SA. Gruber was often criticized for slow growth of the Hitler Youth ranks when the rest of the party was seeing large increases in membership.

In October of 1931, under increased pressure from Hitler, and Rohm, Gruber resigned as leader of the Hitler Youth and was replaced by the newly appointed Reichsjugendführer (Reich’s Youth Leader) Baldur von Schirach.

The Nazis capitalized on the natural enthusiasm of young people, their craving for action and desire for peer approval, hoping, ultimately, each young person would come to regard his or her Hitler Youth or BDM unit as a home away from home,in some case as an alternative to their real home.

Hitler Youth at a Nazi rally in 1936

Beginning in 1933, every year thereafter was to be given a special theme by the leadership of the Hitler Youth. 1933 was aptly named the “Jahr der Organization” or “the year of organization”.

Many of the HJ activities thus centered on such topics as administration, organization, structure, etc. As a reward for his previous years of service, On June 17th, 1933 Hitler elevated Baldur von Schirach to the new position of “Jugendführer des Deutschen Reiches” answerable only to him.

On December 1st, 1936, a law was enacted which made it mandatory for all German youths to be educated according to the philosophies of Nationalist Socialism from the age of 10 and higher. This was called the Reichsjugenddienstpflicht (mandatory youth service) and it essentially legalized the Hitler Youth movement and organization while also neutralizing nearly every other, non Hitler Youth affiliated youth movement.

Schirach’s goal in 1936 was to enroll the entire population of ten-year-olds throughout Germany into the Hitler Youth as a present for Hitler on his 47th birthday. 1936 became the “Year of the Jungvolk”

In 1937, a Hitler Youth rifle school was also established. About 1.5 million boys were trained in rifle shooting and military field exercises over the next few years with over 50,000 boys earning a marksmanship medal that required near perfect shooting at a distance of 50 meters.

Hitler Youth home in Litsmannstadt “Lodz”

Special Hitler Youth Paramilitary formations for boys eventually included: the Flieger-HJ in which aviation enthusiasts built gliders, participated in annual glider flying competitions, visited Luftwaffe facilities and went for rides in fighters and bombers; the Motor-HJ for boys 16 and older in which they acquired their driver’s license and learned to ride motorcycles; and the Marine-HJ in which they obtained sailing certificates, learned river navigation, and participated in naval exercises aboard German training ships.

In September 1938, the last peacetime Nuremberg rally was held. This event was called “Rally of Greater Germany” (Reichsparteitag Großdeutschland), and hosted nearly 700,000 members of various Nazi Party organizations over its weeklong festivities.

Der Sturmer article depicting Hitler Youth

On Saturday, September 10, over 80,000 Hitler Youths marched into the city stadium and performed military-style parade maneuvers, which they had been practicing for an entire year, ending with a grand finale in which they spelled out the name ‘Adolf Hitler’ in the grandstand.

On November 9 1938, a coordinated destruction broke out in cities, towns and villages throughout the Third Reich. In a single night, Kristallnacht saw the destruction of more than 2,000 Synagogues, and the ransacking of tens of thousands of Jewish businesses and homes.

Although predominantly perpetrated by Nazi SA Storm troopers, German women and children also participated in the riots and destruction of Jewish property. When von Schirach learned that Hitler Youth members had indeed engaged in such offensive actions, he issued an order officially forbidding Hitler Youth members from taking part in any similarly minded actions in the future.

By 1939 the Hitler Youth became the largest youth organization in the world with over 7.3 million strong within its ranks. A new law was issued on March 25, 1939, conscripting any remaining holdouts into the organization amid warnings to parents that unless their children were enrolled they would be forcibly removed and placed in the custody of state run orphanages.

Baldur von Schirach evacuating children from German cities

In 1940 Baldur von Schirach organized the evacuation of 5 million children from cities threatened by Allied bombing. Not wanting to be left out of the war, received Hitler’s permission to volunteer for the army and later that year, he joined the army and volunteered for service in France, where he was awarded the Iron Cross.

He was replaced by Artur Axmann as Reichsjugendführer who immediately began to reform the group into an auxiliary force which could perform war duties. The Hitler Youth became active in German fire brigades and assisted with recovery efforts to German cities affected from Allied bombing.

Artur Axmann

The Hitler Youth also assisted in such organizations as the Reich Postal Service, Reichsbahn, fire services, and Reich radio service, and served among anti-aircraft defense crews.

In 1942, the Hitler Youth established the W-E Lagers. These were special military training camps lasting three weeks in duration. By November of 1942, the Wehrmacht operated 120 W-E Lagers and the SS operated 42 such camps. If all of the Hitler Youth boys at their local school were 17, the whole class was sent to the W-E Lager as a single unit.

13 year old Hitler Youth captured near Nartinzell

The year 1943 marked the military turning point for Hitler’s Reich. In January, the German Sixth Army was destroyed by the Soviets at Stalingrad and the call to arms amongst the ranks of the Hitler Youth was raised. The result was the formation of the 12th SS-Panzer Division Hitlerjugend.

The division was deployed during the Battle of Normandy to be deployed against the British and Canadian forces in the north of Caen. During the following months, the Hitlerjugend division earned itself a reputation for ferocity and fanaticism.

Towards the fall of 1944, many of the Hitler Youth were drafted into service digging anti-tank ditches around eastern German towns to stop the advancing Red Army, and in the west to stem the advance of the Allied forces. Hundreds of miles of trenches were frantically dug by young boys all over the country.

By September of the same year, the war had taken its toll on German youth. The Hitlerjugend division numbered only 600 surviving soldiers, and with little ammunition and no armor, thousands had of young lives were wasted in Normandy and Falaise. The division also participated in the failed Battle of the Bulge, and were later sent to Hungary where they participated in the failed attempt to recapture Budapest.

Member of the Hitler Youth captured by American soldiers

On May 8, 1945, numbering just 455 soldiers and one tank, the 12th SS-Panzer Division Hitlerjugend surrendered to the American 7th Army.

The Hitler Youth formed a major part of the last line of German defense, and were reportedly among the fiercest fighters. The city commander, General Helmuth Weidling, ordered Axmann to disband the Hitler Youth combat formations but the order was never carried out, and many more Hitler Youth died defending Berlin street by street from the ever-advancing Soviet army.

The Hitler Youth was disbanded by Allied authorities as part of the De-Nazification process and many of its leaders were put on trial by Allied authorities for corrupting the hearts and minds of millions of young Germans.

I thik it reached critical mass for two reasons. First- for many school systems this is the first day of class and wasting (yes wasting time) on a teachable moment simply wasn’t in the schedule. The second reason is that it just wasn’t a speech it was the overreach of lesson plans from the Dept. of Education to help the “schoochildren” better appreciate their time with dear leader.

I think the message of a mixed race young man who graduated high school, college, law school, elected to the US Senate and as POTUS is a good one. It should be inspiring to many youth in the country.

But the video needs to be previewed by the public WEEKS before airing with maybe a 5 minute LIVE pep talk.

barnone on September 4, 2009 at 8:42 AM

I really wouldn’t mind normally if a President were to address the students to encourage them to work hard and enlighten their minds, but when a President who made claims of wanting to build a ‘Civilian Army’ as well funded as the Department of Defense, among other comments he has said in the past sends out prep literature that asks children to ‘think differently’ and ‘think about what they can do for Obama’ on the eve of Involuntary Servitude Day, it gets a little creepy.

Here in the Midwest, the schools are going nuts. Some are not showing Obama’s speech, some are offering it, but not requiring it, but they are all in a panic from all of the phone calls they have been getting.

I’m guessing Obama will clean up the message, and make it sound like a ‘Go Team’ moment and try to point at the right and claim we are fear-mongering again.

It is seemingly a pattern, trying to isolate the right by invoking suspect behavior to get a response, then back off a little and claim the right is ‘crying wolf’.

Repeat until the masses are tired of hearing the right crying wolf, then go for the kill.

Presidents often heart school kids…

President Bush’s plea for American children to aid Afghan kids with dollar bills, was exemplary.

Mark Halperin even wrote…

“[he] suspects that Bush performed better on 9/11 after the first two hours than other presidents would have.”

What’s not to like folks, with Presidents having dialogs with school kids…?

Geezer on September 4, 2009 at 9:12 AM

Keep up the fight. After 30 years in the classroom, it is not really Obama that is the problem. It is the teachers. Obama’s message is pretty creepy, but not to kids. It is the lesson plan and activities afterwards that is the problem. Why would any of them need to help Obama? They need to learn to work on themselves.
I never saw a picture of Ronald Reagan in any of my schools. Same for Nixon or Bush I. There were plenty of JFK, Carter, and Clinton.
I can’t stress this enough for parents. Get involved in your child’s school and what goes on there. PTA isn’t enough. Check everything that your child brings home. Homework, announcements, text books, activity programs, etc. etc. Do not assume that if you leave your child in the school’s care that they are teaching them things that you want to be taught. Way too many of my teacher friends’ children had to be re-taught when they came home.
Why do you think so many folks have opted for home schooling? Why do you think the Libs are trying in CA to stop this trend? They need control of the kid’s minds.

“In 1857, one hundred educators answered a national call to unite as one voice in the cause of public education. At the time, learning to read and write was a luxury for most children—and a crime for many Black children. One hundred and fifty years later, public education and the profession of teaching are transformed. In 1966 we joined forces with the American Teachers Association. Since then, our voice has swelled to 3.2 million members, and what was once a privilege for a fortunate few is now an essential right for every American child, regardless of family income or place of residence.”

This is insane. Are your kids so weak, and is your influence over them so weak that they can’t hear the President speak for twenty minutes about the importance of doing your homework, without their minds being permanently corrupted? It borders on conspiracy theory to think that Obama is trying to control your kids minds, and borders on stupidity to think that he could. The worse message that could get into your kids at such a young age is that there is something deeply sinister about all authority figures. Is that what you want to teach them? Because from that comes distrust of teachers, coaches, police officers, and eventually….parents. You are using your children to express displaced outrage about your own politics rather than sincerely trying to protect them from a manufactured threat. Get a grip.

Perhaps you might want to read up on John McDonogh and his bequest of funds for education upon his death in the cities of Baltimore and New Orleans, in equal measure. What I find interesting is this: the NOLA public school system used the funds for buildings, whereas the Baltimore donation funded a single private school.

Compare and contrast the scholarship of students at the private McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD to the scholarship of students in the New Orleans Public School System.

There is simply no contest. The NOLA public school system is horrible. And yes, I grew up not far from New Orleans. I was thankful I never attended school there.

But of course the union thugs posing as teachers in the NEA will never admit that their performance almost never comes close to that of private schools. Never.

Remember how Obama killed a voucher program for the private school to which he now sends his own daughters? It was one of his first acts as President, btw. Think on that.

Have you never heard the saying, “Lie with dogs, and get up with fleas”?

Obama may not be directly planning to indoctrinate children. However, his surrogates in education have done it repeatedly over the past year. See the youtube vid that sven1077 linked to in his post at 1:51AM for a glaring example.

“…We have made the decision to not show the president’s talk during the school day. This decision was made to honor class time throughout the district, and because we have no opportunity for prior review to determine if it relates to curriculum, is appropriate for all age levels, and is non-partisan regardless of the political party in office…”

The “proof” that Obama WANTED to indoctrinate kids is in the lesson plan that they had to do the ol’ two step backwards from. The arrogance is palpable. It’s just another Cult of Personality attempt. And yes, my kids are strong enough to discern liberal crappola, but the majority of Americans are sadly idiots. And they don’t teach their kids, and the public schools don’t teach kids how to discern right from wrong.

I really don’t care what he says. It’s obvious, especially from the materials they had to remove, that this is a cult of personality thing. Good idea. And let’s ask all of their friends, and their friend’s parents what’s going to come out of their mouths before they speak.

I didn’t vote for Obama, but at the same time, I’m not going to bust an artery because he wants to tell my kid about the importance of homework and respecting their teachers. Alternatively, you are teaching your kids to hate the President, something they will find very confusing because they don’t know what “the public option” means or what the word “socialized’ means, nor do they care. I have always been an advocate of local control by elected school boards to make the best decisions with respect to how monies will be spent for the common good of the district.

I find your comparison with respect to allocations between the New Orleans school district in 1850 and the private McDonough School in Baltimore some 159 years hence; to be somewhat nebulous, since neither you nor I can be cognizant of the specific local requirements at that time.

Considering the recent effects of the hurricane Katrina, I believe the city of New Orleans, today; would be well advised to spend money on the improvement or replacement of damaged buildings and infrastructure.

I teach my kids to hate the ideas that are destroying America. But I’ve told them time and again the best way to deal with that is to always study the issues, vote and don’t be afraid to say what is right.

But you have heard of “peer pressure” haven’t you?

kirkill on September 4, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Presumptive answer to her question: Because far fewer kids (and parents) are going to want to watch in the evening. People get grumpy when an Obama speech on something important preempts the primetime schedule; does she really believe they’re going to turn off “CSI” to watch The One drone on about education

So what? That’s the whole point. This isn’t a decision the government gets to make. This whole exercise has no real educational value and is at best just another contribution to Obama’s hagiography.

I think kids can handle 20 minutes alone with him.

That’s not the point. Do really not see the principled argument here?

Beside’s, the Executive is one of three co-equal branches of government. You could make the case that if it’s OK for Obama, then It’s OK for Pelosi, Reid and Roberts to do the same. And why not Bonior or McConnell?

Geezer on September 4, 2009 at 11:14 AM

Well, buddy, here’s the deal.

I am from the New Orleans area. Don’t even go there on Katrina; the storm was a minor Cat III by the time it hit the city. Most of the damage in the city came from a levee breach that was caused by shoddy engineering and project management by the US Army Corps of Engineers. If you care to delve into that subject, have a look at this site.

Facts, not politics.

I also lived in Owings Mills, MD for almost 18 months several years ago, very close to the McDonogh School. It was the first time I had become aware of the dual nature of McDonogh’s bequest, having been previously aware of his donation to the New Orleans school system.

Buildings do not make a school. Dedicated teachers who are allowed to actually teach and uphold discipline in their classes make a school great. The principal of my alma mater in Louisiana – yes, a public school, but one that is increasingly becoming the exception – has held that job for over 30 years. I talked with him personally last October in regards to the things he and his staff had to do to ensure that classes went on in a parish that had suffered 99% destruction of residential homes due to Katrina’s flooding – not the USACoE fiasco flooding of the 17th St. Canal 36 hours *after* the storm passed, but the storm surge which accompanied the eye of the hurricane as it passed directly over the town, some 25 miles east (which was caused, in turn, by another USACoE disaster, the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, or MRGO). They managed to make do and hold classes for weeks with donations of tents.

My point in offering up the comparison between the Owings Mills school and the NOLA public school system was this: in MD, the investment was used to create a private school which flourishes to this day because of the high standards of scholarship which flourish in an educational setting which is free from the union-led excesses of the NEA. The NOLA schools, by comparison, are a textbook case of focusing on protecting teachers rather than teaching students.

For years, what made my public high school great is that we competed in sports and educational excellence with the private Catholic schools of the area. The competition kept us sharp. The NOLA system has no such competitive tension between it and private schools. But it does have some of the worst excesses of the teacher’s unions. Study the way that school system operates. I have.

You can look at how a live oak tree has grown over the years and surmise its condition against its local environment. The same goes for institutions such as schools.

If we are allowed to “opt out” of paying for education in a system we don’t want, and can take those funds and apply them to a system that we do want, we can afford it.

However, Obama and the NEA enjoy sticking their hands into our wallets much too much to allow such a heresy to stand.

Curiously, Hitler never “announced” the death camp/extermination of Jews.
The operation was completely secret and kept so by the Wannsee Protocol.
(It was only revealed to the world by Adolph Eichman.)
But NObama is like Hitler and a Fascist in that he’s trying to indoctrinate our nation’s children en masse, he’s nationalized several industries and he’s developing a cult of personality–common traits of many dictators, including Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jung-Il and Mao Tse Tung.
Given what he’s done or tried to do in the last 7 months, it’s not in the realm of “Code Pink wackos” to make a NObama-Hitler connection.

Just got an email from our new and excellent Catholic High School principal: I examined the teaching suggestions attached to the Education Secretary’s letter, which gave few details of what the specific content of the President’s speech would be. The documents attached to the Secretary’s letter contained a collection of instructional strategies which could be used to address the speech in classes. Given the absence of specific information on what this speech contains, and our already full curriculum for our first full day of school, we will not be airing the speech. I have emailed the Superintendent and informed the faculty of my decision.

I am so proud of this guy because, due to our location, he is going to get some blow-back.

(BTW, Hilter took power in 1933, but didn’t set up the death camps until 1941.)

We can’t say we didn’t warn them. Them being the blind sheeple with Obama tingles in their legs.

Oddly enough, I don’t recall Reagan’s speech being used by the Dept of Education as an opportunity to write letters to him, with answers to the question, “what are you going to do for your President?” and such mess…

Not oddly enough, your partisan memory is highly selective. Reagan discussed gun issues with the children.

Do you miss the common sense in that? Did he have a lesson plan to get the kids to think about what Obama said about education and write an essay on how fabulous he is?

You mean he dared discuss the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution? Scandalous, that…!

Wanderlust on September 4, 2009 at 12:31 PM

While we are at it, lets get transcripts of everything their teachers will say to them before they say it,

Silly non-argument.

and let’s read the scripts to all the movies and TV shows, before they watch them.

Not pertinent.
School children aren’t required by their school to watch movies and TV shows on school time, on school property.

And let’s ask all of their friends, and their friend’s parents what’s going to come out of their mouths before they speak.

More silliness.

I didn’t vote for Obama, but at the same time, I’m not going to bust an artery because he wants to tell my kid about the importance of homework and respecting their teachers.

That’s not what he’s going to say.
Nor should the POTUS have to say it.

Alternatively, you are teaching your kids to hate the President, something they will find very confusing because they don’t know what “the public option” means or what the word “socialized’ means, nor do they care. That effect of your cynicism is more damaging to them at this stage than anything that will come out of the President’s mouth.

pleaseandthankyou on September 4, 2009 at 10:55 AM

There’s no teaching of “hate” about it.
Political dissent and partisan differences with the current POTUS is perfectly natural in American home and school life.
48% of us didn’t vote for Obama, while he continues to pursue a purely partisan Leftist Liberal Democrat position as pResident.
Children need to be taught what’s appropriate for adults to do and for the President to commandeer the TV and the classroom to promote his DemocRat partisan program is inappropriate.
The fact that no other President has even done this should be a heads up to every one.
We elect a President.
We don’t have or want a dictator who abrogates all rights, including parental ones.

So I’m right. It’s not the principle of a POTUS addressing school children you object to, but the person. You couldn’t care less if Reagan or Bush or (hilarious thought) Palin addressed children directly about God, guns, and gays.

If anyone is “SCUM” around here, it’s unprincipled hysterics like you. Hitler = Obama?

What a fool you are.

On C-Span.
Participation was purely voluntary and on a school-by-school basis.
NObama’s Dear Leader address takes this all to a new level–a frightening, creepy, worship-your-dictator kind of level.
The USA is a nation of laws, not of men.
And that includes the President.

Oh, dear…here we go again. Love how you tried to put words in her mouth, silly guy. No logic, no argument of a position, just assumptions. Lovely.

Wanderlust on September 4, 2009 at 12:35 PM

That’s not what he’s going to say.

How do you know?

The fact that no other President has even done this should be a heads up to every one.

Are you actually an idiot or do you just play one on the internet? Reagan did the same and more. See above.

We don’t have or want a dictator who abrogates all rights, including parental ones.

Sigh.

I missed have missed those instructions from the DOE.

Sorry, who’s the fool?
Reagan didn’t issue an edict that all the nation’s schools listen to his program.
Nor did the Reagan White House issue lesson plans to go along with his speech.

Neither you nor NObama are fit to lick Ronald Reagan’s shoes!

No President before NObama has venture to lecture our nation’s schoolchildren about anything.
Curiouser and curiouser.

Jenfidel on September 4, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Your memory is selective Growfins and you forget all the names they called Reagan and GWB, and are you saying we should not do that with a leftist type president that we have now? I say leftist is because he supports the leftist who tried to hang on to power in Honduras. He also has appointed this Rev. Wright type guy called Van Jones who would probably support a more Soviet type of government then the one we have had the last two hundred years. Remember communist nations never have an illegal immigration problem because they have to build fences to keep their people in.
