Wonderful: WWF ad on 9/11 also has a video version

posted at 9:48 pm on September 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Ace, you’ll like this even better than the print ad: Instead of just the two towers smoking, this time you actually get to see the planes go in. WWF is finally admitting that they did play some role in approving the print spot, issuing a joint statement with the ad agency, DDB, that “the inexperience of some professionals on both sides” is to blame. And yet:

Sergio Valente, president of DDB Brasil, said the ad was presented to the WWF in Brazil in December 2008 and approved; it then ran once in a small local paper.

“When I saw it, I said, ‘Stop running that ad,’” Mr. Valente said…

A DDB Brasil spokesperson in Sao Paulo said a video version of the ad being circulated on the internet was not done or authorized by the agency or the client. She said DDB execs first saw the video, which features slightly different copy, on the internet and don’t know who created it.

Really? So some wily amateur video producer out there happened to stumble across a print ad that only ran once in South America and was so taken with it that he churned out a slick animated version on his own dime? Humor me for a moment and assume that this is, in fact, the handiwork of DDB. If so, exactly how many “inexperienced professionals” contributed to — and approved — the spot?

Exit question: This is actually a perfect ad for next week’s 9/11 “day of service,” isn’t it? Here, as there, the identity of the perpetrators is basically irrelevant.

I’m not surprised. And I’m not watching the ad, either.

They got what they wanted…exposure. It’s not like their supporters have trouble with dancing on the graves of over 3000 people if it contributes to their cause.

Whereas I could easily see how donating to the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines could prevent another 9/11.

The link is that mans ability to do harm is nothing compared to nature’s ability to do harm. So we must obviously fight back against nature and concur it once and for all.

And as a side note, that ad makes me sick to my stomach.

Not only are the creators of this ad beyond sick, they’re not even logical. What do tsunamis have to do with preserving wildlife anyway? We could make America as green as a Christmas tree and preserve every living thing on the planet and it wouldn’t have any impact on whether a tsunami forms or not. It’s just stupid.

To think we could have stopped an earthquake that caused a Tsnami is preposterous.

We all know the one who can stop a Tsnami:

Job 38

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding,

Who set its measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the line on it?

“On what were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,

When the morning stars sang together
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who enclosed the sea with doors
When, bursting forth, it went out from the womb;

When I made a cloud its garment
And thick darkness its swaddling band,

And I placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,

And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther;
And here shall your proud waves stop’?

1. Yet another case of a local ad for a global client that ran once and then was entered into award shows. DDB Brasil didn’t seem to mind once the ad started winning at shows until the internet had a sh1t fit over it – THEN the ad agency backpedals and tried to blame the creative team for going rogue and acting alone. This happens all the time for “fake” ads like this one.

2. The One Show is indeed based in America, but the judges are culled from ad agencies all over the world. It’s one of the most difficult shows to win at. I’m really surprised they thought this sh*tty ad was worthy of even a merit.

3. There are hundreds and hundreds of ads out there in the world that would offend Americans. But, in the country they’re from, the way a certain subject matter is dealt with in order to get a message across is not considered offensive to that particular country. You can’t possibly expect the rest of the world to feel the same way you do or have the same sensitivities you do. That’s just dumb.

Starting with simple soft-bodied creatures this evolutionary innovation culminates in the “Cambrian explosion,” a burst of biological creativity unprecedented in earth’s history.

http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/Carboniferous_climate.html
North America was located along Earth’s equator then, courtesy of the forces of continental drift. The hot and humid climate of the Middle Carboniferous Period was accompanied by an explosion of terrestrial plant life. However by the Late Carboniferous Period Earth’s climate had become increasingly cooler and drier. By the beginning of the Permian Period average global temperatures declined by about 10° C.
Interestingly, the last half of the Carboniferous Period witnessed periods of significant ice cap formation over polar landmasses– particularly in the southern hemisphere. Alternating cool and warm periods during the ensuing Carboniferous Ice Age coincided with cycles of glacier expansion and retreat.

Earth’s climate and atmosphere have varied greatly over geologic time. Our planet has mostly been much hotter and more humid than we know it to be today, and with far more carbon dioxide (the greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere than exists today. The notable exception is 300,000,000 years ago during the late Carboniferous Period, which resembles our own climate and atmosphere like no other.

Average global temperatures in the Early Carboniferous Period were hot- approximately 20° C (68° F). However, cooling during the Middle Carboniferous reduced average global temperatures to about 12° C (54° F). As shown on the chart below, this is comparable to the average global temperature on Earth today!
Similarly, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Early Carboniferous Period were approximately 1500 ppm (parts per million), but by the Middle Carboniferous had declined to about 350 ppm — comparable to average CO2 concentrations today!
Earth’s atmosphere today contains about 380 ppm CO2 (0.038%). Compared to former geologic times, our present atmosphere, like the Late Carboniferous atmosphere, is CO2- impoverished! In the last 600 million years of Earth’s history only the Carboniferous Period and our present age, the Quaternary Period, have witnessed CO2 levels less than 400 ppm.

We are actually in an ice age climate today. However for the last 10,000 years or so we have enjoyed a warm but temporary interglacial vacation. We know from geological records like ocean sediments and ice cores from permanent glaciers that for at least the last 750,000 years interglacial periods happen at 100,000 year intervals, lasting about 15,000 to 20,000 years before returning to an icehouse climate. We are currently about 18,000 years into Earth’s present interglacial cycle. These cycles have been occurring for at least the last 2-4 million years, although the Earth has been cooling gradually for the last 30 million years.

Our Future Written in Stone
________________________________________
Today the Earth warms up and cools down in 100,000- year cycles. Geologic history reveals similar cycles were operative during the Carboniferous Period. Warming episodes caused by the periodic favorable coincidence of solar maximums and the cyclic variations of Earth’s orbit around the sun are responsible for our warm but temporary interglacial vacation from the Pleistocene Ice Age, a cold period in Earth’s recent past which began about 2 million years ago and ended (at least temporarily) about 10,000 years ago. And just as our current world has warmed, and our atmosphere has increased in moisture and CO2 since the glaciers began retreating 18,000 years ago, so the Carboniferous Ice Age witnessed brief periods of warming and CO2-enrichment.

What will our climate be like in the future? That is the question scientists are asking and seeking answers to currently. The causes of “global warming” and climate change are today being popularly described in terms of human activities. However, climate change is something that happens constantly on its own. If humans are in fact altering Earth’s climate with our cars, electrical powerplants, and factories these changes must be larger than the natural climate variability in order to be measurable. So far the signal of a discernible human contribution to global climate change has not emerged from this natural variability or background noise.

You don’t appear to know much about advertising.

The One Club is indeed based in NYC, but the judges are selected from ad agencies around the world.

Award shows are one of the main things that help art directors and copywriters advance their careers. Winning something gets their name out there and, hopefully, job offers from greener pastures. There are dozens of award shows based in many different countries.

Is the One Club not for profit? it may say so on the website, but the ridiculous entry fees they charge (or Cannes or the British D&AD shows) certainly make them a ton of money. It costs about 900$US to enter a single tv commercial into the Cannes show – over 4000 entries in 2009. There were over 22,000 submissions in all categories this year. You do the math. It’s a very lucrative business, these award shows.

Of course you can’t. But that’s like trying to downplay honor killings by saying “you can’t expect everyone else to agree with you that they’re wrong.” Of course not everyone thinks honor killings are wrong – that’s how they happen, that’s how they become part and parcel of a culture and gain a certain level of acceptance. But it takes a hefty dose of moral relativism to then propose that we not even condemn it because we can’t expect everyone else to agree with us.

People in different parts of the world have different values to me. Am I so lacking in confidence in my own values that I believe that these values are just as valid as my own? Of course not! I know damn well that there are people in other parts of the world who weren’t particularly upset by 9/11. Hell I know that some of the bastards even danced in the streets. A girl I know in England said the following to me on the day it happened: “Well I just think it’s great that they can show those greedy capitalist bastards that they’re not invincible.”

The point is, expressing outrage over such things is not the same as “expecting them never to do it.” I fully expect them to do it, because they’re scum. Put it this way. How much outrage do you think would result if an ad was released in this country which used graphic footage of people drowning in the tsunami in order to promote the war on terror?

Outrage aside, I still just do not get how this ad has anything to do with protecting wildlife

RightWinged on September 2, 2009 at 10:11 PM

How much do you think a black woman breastfeeding a white baby had to do with Benetton clothing?

Sharke on September 2, 2009 at 10:51 PM

Oh now I get it… The terrorists only killed around 3000 people but the Americans driving their SUVs to work killed over 300,000 people. Gee Mr. Obvious I wonder why I couldn’t make the connection.

iceman1960 on September 2, 2009 at 10:52 PM

What kind of lunatic would approve this?!

Emily M. on September 2, 2009 at 10:27 PM

My guess is an idiot who doesn’t understand what the atrocities of 9/11/01 means to the folks that fund the WWF coffers. It’s absurd to blame the “Brazil WWF” because any ad campaign had to be vetted. Somebody in the US bought of on this idea.

My challenge: Federal contribution by employees (including military personnel contributions) to charities are through the Combined Federal Campaign. Find out how to exclude WWF from consideration. This ad campaign is truly that offensive.

Probably some low level WWF client approved it. Probably mid to late 20′s. Not too soaked in politics, certainly not that concerned with America or how any of you might react to an ad running in his/her own country.

There are plenty of occasions where an ad runs without any client knowledge. The creative team runs the ad once so they can enter it into award shows. The industry hasn’t figured out – or rather refuses to address this issue. The award shows would rather take the entry fees than have to do the leg work to determine if an ad is legit.

Dave Rywall on September 2, 2009 at 10:52 PM

Everything you say is true. Except I wouldn’t consider the creative team to be scum; just kind of stupid. Because it’s a stupid concept.

Bottom line is ads like this (not offensive in country A but offensive in country B who aren’t really ever meant to see the ads) will never stop being made.

SOMEWHERE GIULIANI BREATHES A SIGH OF RELIEF

Dave Rywall on September 2, 2009 at 10:56 PM

You can’t possibly expect the rest of the world to feel the same way you do or have the same sensitivities you do. That’s just dumb.

Dave Rywall on September 2, 2009 at 10:38 PM

So we Americans should feel free to run ads which feature bombs going off in Spanish subway stations or flaming SUVs crashing into the White Zone at Scottish airports, or even video games in which we suicide bomb civilians on Iraqi streets.

I’m sure that if any American brewer built an ad which looks at all like a Molson’s Canadian ad, you guys would be whining deeply about how uncultured we are.

Canadian guy takes beaver out and places it on bar, and trigger happy American wastes the critter just before the Canadian yells “Kill!”. The Canadian stares at his dead animal and says “Why’d you do that, eh?” The American replies, “That was my best beaver shot yet.”

WTF: I say we kill the f*cking planet before it kills us. We’ll show that bitch Gaia who’s boss. Whip some skull on me, Gaia, before I pop your coal sands out and skull f*ck you. You think we’re done with you? We’re going to cut every last one of your ancient canopy trees down to the roots, we’re going to pollute every last one of your pristine rivers, we’re going to harvest your oceans until they are as barren as Hillary Clinton’s loins. We’re going to pollute your air until it takes the consistency of semi-solid diarrhea. And then we’re going to leave you like a once-f*cked date without a callback and colonize the universe and DO THE SAME DAMN THING to every planet we touch because we are MANKIND and that is our goddamed destiny!

Oh, but I’m a member of the World Wrestling Federation, so I have that going for me.

I didn’t say the DDB Brasil creative team were smart. I’m just telling you you can’t possibly expect people around the world to give as much of a sh1t about what happens to your country as you do. The team made a stupid ad based on their limited worldview. The end.

But funny you should mention the Spain commuter train bombings in a discussion of how much people in one country care about things happening in another. Here at Hotair there were some pretty ignorant don’t give a shit reap what they sow comments about the Spain attacks.

Dave Rywall on September 2, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Brazil is a wonderful country (yes full disclosure Wasteland-Girl is from there.) but their current president ran for president on the “partido do trabalhador”. YES, the workers party or the communist party in Brazil. Sooooo even though he hasnt pulled a Chavez yet, I would imagine Soros and Obama are quite Chummy with him.
