WH deletes line about schoolkids helping Obama from speech prep materials
posted at 8:24 pm on September 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m guessing this won’t lead to any changes of heart among those fearful enough of Hopenchange brainwashing to pull their kid out of school next Thursday, but it does take a key talking point away from them.
As one of the preparatory materials for teachers provided by the Department of Education, students had been asked to, “Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. “
Today, after Republicans accused the White House of trying to indoctrinate school children with liberal propaganda the White House and the Department of Education changed the section to now read, “Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short‐term and long‐term education goals.”
“We changed it to clarify the language so the intent is clear,” said White House Spokesman Tommy Vietor…
“As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology,” Jim Greer, Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida said, “The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power.”
The Department of Education though did not “force” – as Greer claims – schools to do anything. Schools districts across the country have the option to choose if they show the President’s address to their students…
“The goal of the speech and the lesson plans is to challenge students to work hard in school, to not drop out and to meet short-term goals like behaving in class, doing their homework and goals that parents and teachers alike can agree are noble,” a White House spokesman tells ABC News, “This isn’t a policy speech. This is a speech designed to encourage kids to stay in school.”
In defense of The One’s critics , this isn’t the first time Team Barry has “inartfully” phrased something in a way that suggests an agenda vastly more ambitious than they claim to have. Remember during the transition when his website insisted that national service would be “required” of students before an outcry led them to delete it? Or the terms of use on the Cash for Clunkers website that seemed to imply dealers would be ceding control over their computers to the feds? Obama’s administration seems not to understand just how deep the suspicion about liberals’ statist aims runs on the right (and increasingly in the center) or else they’d police their rhetoric more closely for little mishaps like this.
And needless to say, swearing a personal oath of service to Obama isn’t as unthinkable as it might seem. Skip ahead to 3:55 of this left-wing classic and watch Demi follow the Leader.

It’s stupid to think the president is going to say something subversive or controversial to our kids. I’m sure the message will be good.
I resent him for using our kids as a means to boost his sagging popularity. This is a crass attention grab, nothing more.

Parents have the legal authority to decide what is appropriate for their children. School distracts are required to allow parents to opt-in, or opt-out of any cirriculum for their children. Those schools that don’t can be successfully sued.
There’s no controversy here. If parents don’t want their children to be part of it, they’re allowed to request an alternative activity or simply keep them out of school for that period of time.

I’m not buying it.
If the point of the speech, all along, was to be about “staying in school” then why is that phrase in NONE of the preparatory literature?
In fact why is NONE of this – “work hard in school, to not drop out and to meet short-term goals like behaving in class, doing their homework and goals that parents and teachers alike can agree are noble” discussed in the prepatory literature?
Oh sure, there’s talk about how the students can implement the “goals” Obama talks about. But it seems to me that if you’re trying to make a push to get kids to stay in school and earn an education and obey your parents that the study guides would include such topics as… knowing where your local library is… planning your time… helping others study…
Not vague platitudes and making posters to help explain the goals your going to achieve.
Might as well have the kids draw a poster of what they want from Santa because it’ll have the same effect and they’re just preparing the kids to fail.

Also, is this not the quintessential example of “centralization” as it’s applied to education? Central planning at its best. In addition to WHAT Obama says, it’s also alarming that a period of the school day revolves around the Chief Teacher and his day’s lesson plan.

What makes you think we need any defense? Everyone with a brain knows what The Precedent is trying to do and knows how un-American it is. There is absolutely no defense of The Precedent in this ridiculous charade. People should keep their kids from school on that day. Period.
The public schools don’t own the children. They are not allowed to do whatever they want to them (though they think they do). Anyone who doesn’t understand this needs to go into the corner and think long and hard about what sort of society they want to live in.
This stuff is creepy beyond words and anyone who tries to minimize it is insane.

Obama knows the idea is already out there in the schools and lots of those “letters” are already written.

With all due respect there is nothing controversial in what the filthy liar says about healthcare either.
It’s not the words but the actions and ideas behind the words that we need to protect our kids from. The rat bastard traitor in the White House will deliver a message that sounds good on the surface but is full of crap about fighting global warming, demanding their parents drop dissent to healthcare for the little boys and girls unable to see a doctor, and whatever else the bastard can shoehorn into his propaganda. He grew up in a multi-racial environment that included white midwesterners, Muslims, and a bit of Polynesia thrown in as well. The rat bastard traitor cannot fathom what it really is like to grow up in America in any culture because his upbringing was so out of synch with what it means to be an American. Washington Times Op-ed—Outstanding Results on National Tests
by J. Michael Smith
HSLDA President
The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) estimates there are more than 1.5 million children being taught at home. Furthermore, the DOE estimates that homeschooling has been growing at 7 percent a year for the last 10 years.
Two related questions many people ask are, “Why has homeschooling become so popular?” and “What is motivating parents to take on this daunting responsibility?” In the most recent report by the DOE, parents gave three basic reasons for choosing home education: to provide religious or moral instruction, concerns about the school environment, and dissatisfaction with academic instruction at other schools.
Regarding the third reason, there is new research showing that the average homeschooler who takes standardized achievement tests is doing very well. The study, commissioned by the Home School Legal Defense Association and conducted by Brian Ray, an internationally recognized scholar and president of the nonprofit National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), is called “Progress Report 2009: Homeschool Academic Achievement and Demographics.”
The study included almost 12,000 homeschool students from all 50 states who took three well-known standardized achievements tests—the California Achievement Test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Stanford Achievement Test—for the 2007–08 academic year. The students were drawn from 15 independent testing services, making it the most comprehensive homeschool academic study to date.
The results reinforced previous homeschool studies conducted over a period of 25 years.
Five areas of academic pursuit were measured. In reading, the average homeschooler scored at the 89th percentile; language, 84th percentile; math, 84th percentile; science, 86th percentile; and social studies, 84th percentile. In the core studies (reading, language and math), the average homeschooler scored at the 88th percentile.
The average public school student taking these standardized tests scored at the 50th percentile in each subject area.
Beyond academics, there were significant results regarding achievement gaps. It is common knowledge that gender, as well as parents’ income and education levels will greatly affect a public school student’s academic results. Public schools have invested greatly to try to close these achievement gaps. The study, however, shows the achievement gaps found in public school were greatly diminished for the home educated.
For example, homeschooled boys scored at the 87th percentile and girls at the 88th. Household income had little impact on the results of homeschool students: Children of parents with an income between $35,000 and $49,000 scored at the 86th percentile, whereas children of parents with an income over $70,000 scored at the 89th percentile.
As one would expect, the education level of parents did affect the results. For example, homeschool students of parents without college degrees scored, on average, at the 83rd percentile for the core subjects. When one parent had a college degree, those students scored at the 86th percentile, and when both parents had a college degree, those students scored at the 90th percentile. There was virtually no difference, however, between the scores of students whose parents were certified teachers and those who were not.
In summary, the results were slightly better than the most recent large academic study regarding homeschoolers (the 1998 Rudner study), and the average homeschool test results continue to be 30-plus percentile points higher than their public school counterparts.
In my opinion, there are two main factors for these outstanding results: the educational environment where learning takes place, and the individualized, one-on-one instruction. Most homeschool students are directly taught by their parents, who love their children enough to make the sacrifice to stay at home to make sure their child is taught in a safe and loving learning environment. Second, one-on-one instruction emphasizes the best interests of the child rather than the best interests of the group.
In a sentence, homeschooling is a recipe for academic success.

I don’t understand why the rewrite is supposed to be reassuring. Students are still instructed to mediate on “what the President wants us to do” and “what is the President asking me to do?” It still gives in-the-tank teachers carte blanche to spend the entire day propagandizing about The One’s Oneness.
I don’t think that the speech is any worse than any of the drip drip drip indoctrination that happens the rest of the time in K-12 – a combination of “let’s all be multicultural and environmental” activities, “who wants to their share feelings” vapidness, and “you should feel guilty” instruction. In fact it might even be nice to inject an air of civic importance into the classroom.
But there’s something wrong when it feels *natural* for mid-level Dept. of Education bureaucrats to make helping the Dear Leader a goal you’re supposed to set for yourself. Allah’s wrong – it’s not tone-deafness. It’s a symptomatic slip borne of some pretty basic day to day dynamics. These people go months without encountering anyone who disagrees with them or any conversation that isn’t about Obama’s awesome awesomeness.

I just accidently pledged a little vomit into my mouth while watching that video. It should come with a warning. Clearly we need a bad commercial czar.

My thoughts exactly. When BO started seeing the flak about his original intent, he backed off and “clarified”. BS. The man doesn’t even have the courage of his convictions. What a weak man, can’t stand the heat, poor baby has to run away and say he is so misunderstood.

Of course parents can have their child(ren) exempted from watching His Most Exalted Excellency’s propaganda…but it does count for 100% of their grade. You wouldn’t want them to flunk out, would you?
Wasn’t it certain school districts in Florida that were forcing mandatory viewings of Al Gore’s schlock-umentary by students and their parent(s), or else the students’ grades would suffer?
