Rasmussen: Obama at 45%
posted at 10:12 am on September 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Getting on TV didn’t help. Staying away from TV doesn’t appear to be helping, either. Barack Obama has to wonder how exactly he will stop the bleeding after today’s Rasmussen tracking poll shows him hitting the lowest level of his presidency, at 45% approval. His approval number now falls within the margin of error of his strong disapproval rating, a proximity that will mean trouble for his legislative agenda:
Overall, 45% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. That’s down a point from yesterday and the lowest level of total approval yet measured for Obama. Fifty-three percent (53%) now disapprove. …
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 30% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -11[.]
Rasmussen also has a month-by-month analysis confirming that Obama has dropped precipitously over the summer. He had ridden as high as 57% in May, but now is under 50% for the entirety of their August polling. That includes some high-profile appearances in town halls and at Ted Kennedy’s wake, as well as significant cooling time on vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. Neither appears to have helped.
This latest tracking poll includes data taken Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, the first poll with all survey data after Ted Kennedy’s wake. As I wrote yesterday, Obama’s appearance at the memorial has not given him any sort of bump despite efforts by supporters to link Obama’s agenda to Kennedy. If anything, Obama has dropped faster than earlier in the month.
Congress has to be watching this decline with a great deal of trepidation. Those facing constituents next year had hoped to rely on a popular President to garner turnout and discourage competition. How many of them will be running away from Obama a year from now rather than with him?

White House contingency plans to get Obama`s ratings up:
a) Put Michelle on more magazine covers – each photo with a different “fantastic” new hair styling.
b) Buy another dog.
c) Find an opportunity for Obama to make another comment and have a “learning lesson” about race in America.
d) Obama takes vacation at beach and gets photos taken without shirt on.
e) Blame George Bush.
f) Blame Dick Cheney.
g) Have Obama go on Letterman, O`Brien and first show of Leno (whenever that is). Tell blame Bush and Cheney jokes.
h) New, improved high tech teleprompter.

If your political strength comes from a perception by voters that you are smart and can get the job done, then you can be forgiven a mistake (e.g, predicting that the “stimulus” would be effective). After all, everyone makes mistakes, the presidency is an incredibly difficult job, and Americans are willing to give almost anyone a second chance. A reputation for competence can be regained if mistakes are followed by successes.
But if your political strength comes from a perception by voters that you will transcend partisanship, unite the country, and change the culture in Washington, and then you govern from the extreme, attack critics as un-American, and get caught repeatedly saying one thing while doing another, there will be no forgiveness. Trust, once lost, is rarely regained
I believe Obama’s declining polls are not an indication that Americans are upset that the stimulus didn’t work and unemployment remains high, or that reforming healthcare is proving harder than advertised. Rather, I believe it reflects disillusionment that they were hoodwinked by a charlatan, a magnificent fraud.
If I’m right, the polls won’t rebound much when the economy does.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Poll numbers are not a zero sum game. There is probably a combination of those who are giving him low numbers because of incompetence and those that are giving him low numbers because he’s not what he claimed to be in the campaign.
The reality is that he needs to do something about these numbers fairly quickly. There is a tipping point where perception takes over from reality and he will never be able to recover- certainly never see approval ratings in the 60s again.

Gates and the Beer Summit – This was one example of “leadership” that Obama showed. A well publicized event. Someone earlier mentioned this as being a turning point, and I think it is correct. Very poorly handled because Obama had to try to make amends for shooting off his mouth. Also the mention sitting around with a beer is a turn off to some people. So we have a public spectacle of our President drinking beer in his shirt sleeves. This is not the image that people want to have of the leader of our country. Our President should be professional. Obama is not, and I think the Beer Summit gave a poor showing of him.
What other areas has Obama showed leadership? Pushing Cash for Clunkers – again, not something that was popular with a large majority of people. It didn’t stimulate the economy in a broad way, only very locally. There are still stories about the program and how dealers are not being paid. Leading on unpopular programs doth not make a popular man.
People want leadership from the Leader of our country, our President. We are not getting this with Obama. He will always have the support of the black community because he is a good example for them. “Look Johnny, a black man can become President”, says Johnny’s mother. You cannot take away that inspiration. If Obama can cayse the black community to work harder on a personal level, that is a good thing.
But for many other people, as the polls are showing, we are not getting the leadership that was expected. Nothing inspiring is even on the horizon. His speeches have had low viewership in the past few months. The excitement of the election and inauguration is long past. Now is the time to get to work, and he isn’t. He also isn’t taking responsibility and is pushing the blame on others. People innately know what makes a good leader, and as time goes on, the realization is taking place that he is lacking these qualities.

40% is usually a point that difficult to get any lower. If he tumbles below that, then the base has begun to wake up. After the past election, I’ll believe it when I see it. However, the rest of the country seems to be getting the memo.

I was working in DC in 1994. If you recall, the GOP had just taken back the House after 40 years of mismanagement by the Democrats. I got into an elevator with a woman who was clearly excited about the election outcome but quickly realized she was excited because Marion Barry had just been re-elected mayor. It was my first realization about how many dumb people vote.

While his numbers may be going down, I see no reason for “irrational exuberance” (was this Greenspan?) yet. There’s still a long, long way to Nov 2010. Many of the main losers are in safe districts (He may be a crook; but he’s our crook! – an ol’ Louisiana proverb, I think). But the pressure needs to continue. It’s always dangerous to corner a threatened animal. My fear is that the Dems will chance the reconciliation cramdown and hope the economy will improve in early 2010. That and other distractions like crucifying the CIA, fears of H1N1 pandemics, brokering a truce between Israel and Hamas, etc. Remember, the MSM will still downplay any poll reversals.

GarandFan on September 1, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Note, he’ll always have a strong 30% approval. Taking a list from someone else on another thread, that 30% consists of the blacks (who will never abandon their boy), leftists (who will never abandon their ideology), and MSM (who will never abandon their Frankenstein).
What will be interesting to see is the increasing reduction of the 15% of “somewhat favorables.” These are independents (Kool-Aid sippers who will give him the benefit of the doubt for a while) and frummers (the “conservative” intelligentsia who seem to believe Obama has all the answers). I bet the 15% levels off, slightly dropping until Thanksgiving. When Christmas hits and it’s lousy and the colder regions start getting their home heating bills, I think Obama is in for a very ugly January and February. He’ll still have the 30% strongly favorable, but the somewhat favorable will be at 5%.
This should be fun watching him fail. Too bad we all have to suffer for the stupidity of those independents who voted for him because it was the cool thing to do.

Obama doesn’t care about “stopping the bleeding” or about polls. He has never “won” a fair election yet, and he doesn’t plan on having to win 2012 in a fair election either. He didn’t “win” the Dem nomination nor did he “win” the GE fairly (ACORN — I’m looking at you). And as sure as he doesn’t give a blip about “reaching across the aisle” he also doesn’t give a good blip about the members of his own party. Obama cares only about himself. As long as he gets the “royal” treatment, rides on air force one & can go around saying how the WH is HIS house, it’s all good. The rest of us can go to halifax.
