James Taranto: Cheney in 2012!
posted at 8:49 pm on September 1, 2009 by Allahpundit
Granted, his popularity’s up — relatively speaking — since he started going toe to toe with Obama on national security, and granted, he’s a change of pace when even Republicans like Alberto Gonzales are making excuses for Eric Holder’s investigation of the CIA. But (a) his net approval rating was still roughly -20 as of May, (b) he told Chris Wallace three days ago that he’s A-OK with CIA agents violating the interrogation rules he and Bush set out for them, and (c) his candidacy would end up being a referendum on the Bush years, which is just about the only way to fire up the liberal base enough to turn out in droves in 2012.
You guys wouldn’t seriously consider him in a three-way race with Romney and Huckabee. Would you?

1: I firmly believe someone unexpected will rise up to the leadership of the GOP, they’ll run and win in 2012.
2: much like Sarah Palin, VP Cheney can be very effective out of any elective office. In a future GOP administration, I’d love to see him as our Sec of Defence if he wanted the job.
Red State State of Mind on September 1, 2009 at 9:35 PM
I guess almost singlehandedly changing the face of the debate with her Death Panel post on Health Scare or her energy independence face book post are not her forte.
Yea I guess she should just stay in the kitchen and take care of the kids?

Well I am beyond caring about that. I am sick and tired of playing middle of the road. I know it’s not all that popular but this country needs a hard move back to the right at least for a while or we are done for it.

He’s already dispelled rumors about him running in 2012. Which suck because he would be a damn good POTUS.
Cr4sh Dummy on September 1, 2009 at 9:39 PM
If Cheney wanted to be president, he would have run in 2008.
I would have voted for him, no matter what year he decided to run.
However, he will not run. He is having so much fun beating on Obama and his minions.
kcarpenter on September 1, 2009 at 9:40 PM
I think it’s because that the women of the GOP that are discussed here really are conservative whereas their male counterparts just pretend to be. (for the most part)

Hmm lets see:
Romney
Huckabee

Do I vote for loser 1, loser 2 or loser 3…
The only way I would vote for any of the three is to avoid three more years of hope and change, but if the party leadership does something this dumb-ass, I will make them pay.

Dude, Palin is not what I’d call the cream of the crop. You’re saying she ‘personally’ negotiated the deal? What the hell does that mean? She came over to Canada, sat down with Harper and they hammered out the details? What a pile of crap. The people of Alaska managed to keep Ted Stevens in office for far longer than he deserved to be, so lets not grant Palin credibility based on the ‘intelligence’ of Alaskan voters.
Hold on now, I think Palin can see Canada from her backyard…

OMG, can we please stop nominating every “conservative” that doesn’t drool as the next Presidential candidate? Just STOP IT!
You are acting like being a Presidential candidate is the highest goal to which someone could or should aspire. As if that is the best way they could further the cause, as if President is some sort of godlike office.
Isn’t that sort of thinking what got us here in the first place?
Just because someone is TERRIFIC, and should be HEARD more frequently, and has A LOT TO OFFER, doesn’t mean he should be President. That kind of talk absolutely KILLS any kind of other conversation.
Less on September 1, 2009 at 10:00 PM

Agreed. Also, stop revisiting every also ran and failure whose time has passed. Look forward. Palin, like Cheney is great as a rabblerouser but she’s too damaged to run successfully. I like her but it just won’t happen.
Monica on September 1, 2009 at 10:04 PM
It should have been Cheney-Bush. I’ll bet Cheney would have held the line better domestically, and would have fought back a heckuva lot more effectively (obviously). He’d also have done a better job keeping the base happy.
So, now, damn skippy I’d support Cheney for President. Let it be a referendum on Bush’s administration. Or, more accurately, a comparison of Bush’s to Obama’s. With a helping of Cheney saying what he’d do different. I’d take my chances, especially if Palin was on the ticket. Mmmmm.
Cheney-Palin 2012: Gun-ownership isn’t a right, it’s a duty!
misterpeasea on September 1, 2009 at 10:05 PM
I’m very happy talking about how awesome Dick Cheney is, what a clear thinker, etc.
I think we should let him and Sarah Palin and all these other “toxic” conservatives just be the kind of folks that preach to the choir and energize us.
By tossing out Cheney/Palin 2012 we end up in a discussion about their electability, or appeal to moderates or other stupid stuff that may or may not be true but DEFINITELY isn’t helpful to the cause.
Right now the cause should be putting a STOP to everything we possibly can. Talking about possible Presidential candidates is us distracting ourselves, and makes us look like fools walking around saying “Are You My Mother?”

Details as to why you think that?
Red State State of Mind on September 1, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Dick Cheney is great, but I think he is much more valuable driving the libs bonkers like he’s doing now. But, if it came down to him, ‘Pretty Boy’ Romney and ‘What the’ Huckabee…I’d gladly vote Cheney without having to hold my nose.
However, Cheney’s already stated that he has no interest in the Presidency, and I don’t blame him one bit. Now that Obama has pretty much worn out his welcome (in just under 8 months), everything about him is going to start to grate upon the nerves of all but the staunchest bootlickers. This rapid lurch to the left has made a lot of heads spin, even those that had Hope-Along Travesty pegged from the get-go. It’s going to take someone with a firm, commanding, adult-like presence (with the character and values to match) to show contrast to what Obama is not.
If Fred Thompson were to show more fire than 2008, he just might be able to do that. Problem is, he’ll be 70 in ’12, and even though 70 is the new 50 (or something), he also has a history of cancer which might be off-putting. Duncan Hunter also ran in ’08, and he was a conservative Rep. from California, so you know he’s tough. Neither of these gentleman can beat Romney’s GQ looks, or Huckabee’s high score on Guitar Hero, but they have substance to counter Obama’s lack thereof.
Left Coast Right Mind on September 1, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Look, if the GOP is gonna go down in ’12, they might as well go down with guns blazing. (and I’m not ready to concede that point anyway)
But if Johnny Mac ended his pathetic run with a whimper, they may as well have Cheney go out with a bang!
Please, GOP, no more mush.
Bruno Strozek on September 1, 2009 at 10:26 PM
Make that Liz Cheney and hell yeah I’d take her over Huck or Romney. Easily.
Dick is too closely associated with Bush and the mess at the end of his term (although signs seem to point he was not agreeing on much with Bush in his second term). Besides I doubt he has any interest in running anyways.

Short answer – yes.
steveegg on September 1, 2009 at 10:36 PM
If “no matter who we nominate” means “whether we nominate Romney or Pawlenty,” then yes, we can expect to lose.
The next Republican candidate for president better not look like the people in Washington now. It will take an outsider that stands on principle.
That leaves out Huckabee.
Better start reconsidering Palin.
Or, you can remember that the next election is still over 3 years away, and hope for someone like Palin to run. But Romney looks and sounds too much like all the usual politicians. He’s going nowhere.

Since Romney and Huckabee are both just fine with making compromises with socialism, Cheney would be the obvious best choice among the three.
Unfortunately, he’s too old, with a bad ticker, isn’t interested in the job, and has electability problems due to the Bush baggage.
Now, Lynn Cheney, on the other hand …

I like Dick Cheney a lot, but he carries too much baggage and he knows it. There is no way he would even think about running, especially with all the power he already commands by just opening his mouth when he feels like it. Liz Cheney, however, is a different story. I think she is eloquent and brilliant. And she is obviously thinking about doing something in the near future, what with all the public appearances she’s been making lately.

I don’t think Cheney has a prayer in hades of being elected, given the level of ignorance and gullibility among voters, but I’d sure love to see him run.
He’d force the other candidates to actually articulate some coherent policy, as opposed to cheap slogans, or risk looking like fools. Remember the VP debate with John Edwards?
Nichevo on September 2, 2009 at 1:29 AM
I would LOOOVE to be able to vote for Dick Cheney for president! Cheney would make MINCEMEAT of Obama in a debate– as he did with Edwards, and as he is doing now over national defense — that is, if Obama even showed up. I would bet good money that Obama would simply refuse to debate him.

The only thing I’d tap Palin on at this point is *maybe* energy guru… I’ve actually gained alot more respect for Cheney since Bush’s end of term then not. Although, I’m pretty sure he’s unelectable because he’s very uncharismatic. Lynn though… yeah she’s got her father’s brain and she comes off as very personable. I’d see her as a good vp choice with *maybe* Romney at this point. We’ll see how the next couple of years go and we can probably run Satan against Obama and win in a landslide.

It’s too hard to get the president on that since most of congress and the country seem to think he gets to do that.

Remember that Obama called Cheney out the day that Cheney was to give a speech at AEI.
He came out and stood up to Obama, and has won the debate that Obama started thus far.
Sarah Palin has been effective standing up against Obamacare and able to get activity to strip out provisions of the circulating bills. She feels she has to fight given her family’s background.
Romney of Romneycare?
Huckabee who put a surtax on already high taxes as Gov.?
Ethanol based Pawlenty?
The first two are FIGHTERS.
I will vote for a FIGHTER who stands up to these thugs and the Left on principle. I will not vote for those who seek to have government intrude in my health care, tax me on top of my taxes or supports welfare for big agriculture. Those three are part of the PROBLEM.
I barely agree with 60% of where Palin stands and yet I would vote for her over any 20th century Democrat any day of the week. Cheney stands up for our troops, stands up for our Nation and his Oath of Office was not left in DC.
I will vote for no more Leftist appeasers, no more Conservative Neville Chamberlains. RINOs need to go extinct due to their behavior in getting us into this mess with ever larger government for the last 30 years. They are part of the problem TOO. Give Americans a clear-cut choice that is stark, dynamic, and does not waffle one tiny bit for ‘electability’ as that has gotten us to 51% voter turnout and headed downwards since 1964.
Obama never had to deal with a street-fighter and still doesn’t know how to do it. He isn’t learning, at any great clip, either. And if Republicans can’t find them, then someone ELSE will.

I like Dick Cheney. I love his wife Lynn. Watching them at a whistle-stop in Zanesville, Ohio, in 2004, they made a lasting impression on me. That said, I don’t think he’s a viable candidate. And yes, his age has something to do with it. Quite frankly, the LAST THING the Republican Party needs to do right now — I mean, it would be just plain f@#$ing stupid at this point — is to trot out another rich old white guy to run for President.
manwithblackhat on September 2, 2009 at 8:42 AM
Dick Cheney won’t run for president. He’s king of the hill if he stays OUT of politics. Plus he said he wouldn’t and you can actually believe him.
I think we can run whoever and win. Carter II has run out the trust people once had in him. If he hits 42% unapproval, it’s bye bye Democratic House in ’10.
