CBS poll: Obama hits another new low on health care

posted at 7:45 pm on September 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Yeah, lots of poll posts today, but let’s enjoy it while we can.

President Obama’s approval rating on health care has dropped six points since July to 40 percent, and now more Americans, 47 percent, disapprove of his handling of health care, according to a new CBS News poll taken between Aug 27 – 31…

Americans are not only skeptical of Mr. Obama’s handling of health care, but also of the effectiveness of reform. Americans are more apt to say the middle class and small business would be hurt, not helped, by the plans currently under consideration…

One-third call themselves dissatisfied with the way the Obama administration is handling health care, and another 17 percent describe themselves as angry about it. Thirty-four percent are satisfied, and just 11 percent are enthusiastic…

Specifically, Americans predict Congress’ reform plans will cause costs to go up, quality of care to get worse, and the availability of doctors to decline. No more than one in five think Congress’ current plans would make any of those areas better.

The fascinating, and potentially important, detail: When asked about specific provisions of ObamaCare — i.e. the public option, statutory ceilings on premiums, guaranteeing insurance irrespective of preexisting conditions, etc. — people are widely supportive. I don’t know how to explain that except to think that (a) public ignorance about the plan really is as bad as CBS claims, which doesn’t say much for The One’s vaunted communications skills, or (b) the country’s now reached such an anti-government fervor that they’re fatally suspicious of even those programs whose particulars they agree with in principle. Either way, the plan as of this morning was for The One to draw a line in the sand next week for Congress on what he will and won’t support, presumably to sharpen the public’s attention on the details. (The public option isn’t a dealbreaker.) I’m intrigued by the fact that he’s willing to go that far but not offer a specific plan of his own, as Bob Dole advised him to do yesterday. His team’s been wary of that as a mistake Clinton made in 1994, but at this point what does Obama have to lose? He tried letting Congress take the lead and got a 40/47 split on this issue for this trouble. If he’s unwilling to push his own plan now, he must have deep doubts about his remaining credibility.

Via Greg Hengler, here’s Chris Matthews making a surprisingly good point while saluting Bill Clinton as the “voice of God” on health care. I made the same argument last night: Since the Democrats won’t get any credit from the right or right-leaning independents for abandoning ObamaCare, they might as well slam through a public option and please their base. Assuming, that is, that they’re willing to endure an endless series of procedural challenges in the Senate from Republicans if they try to use reconciliation. Which they may have no choice but to do, now that Teddy’s gone.

Is there a record for number of new poll lows in a month? If so, this guy has got to have it. It is almost becoming a fait accompli–new poll, new low. If it’s up, it’s only one point up and within measurement error.

I just think its funny that with minor opposition from R’s, the Democrats couldn’t get a ‘public option’ pushed through.

Most of the left thought that the public option WAS their compromise. They thought that was acceptable in the place of their desired single payer system from ‘go’.

San Fran Nan is in shock and disbelief that there is an issue with the ‘public option’. But the problem is the cost. Medicare is a ‘public option’, but no taxpayer has the option not to pay the claim.

It’s ironic that the lefts dumbing down of society has come back to bite them in the A$$! From what I have seen these dishonest control freaks are not only niave about the intestinal fortitude of the US populus, but just plain stupid and immature in their whole take from the rich mentality. ha ha ha ha I mean their trying to take away from people who worked for what they have. It may have worked in the past under the guise of helping the less fortunate in this country but now that the left has exited their trojan horse after so meny years people can see in broad daylight the unsavory scheme they have for this country. They seem like a bunch of egomaniacal kooks hell bent on fame and fortune.

To think he wanted this Marxist abortion passed and signed before the August recess.

The problem is this was never about healthcare, this was about the power grab. What he supports is the Marxist option and now he can’t get away with it.

Any sensible plan from the rat bastard traitor will include the following.

1. Higher taxes and new taxes after months of claiming that deficit neutral is possible by eliminating “inefficiencies” in the evil private insurance sector.

2. Federal funding of abortion.

3. Reduction of Medicare benefits.

4. The framework for “death panels” which is to say a central bureaucracy that does, indeed, get between Americans and their doctors.

Not necessary except for political purposes is the inclusion of a public plan.

Bottom line, the filthy liar wants wiggle room so that he can blame Congress when they ram through HR3200.

Bill Clinton is as close to being the “voice of God” as I am to Alpha Centauri. Matthews made no ‘good’ point. He was being as obtuse, delusional, partisan, and stupid as only he can get. If anyone tops him that way, it’s Olbermann (good old-fashioned German name, there).

I wonder if those tingles up Chrissy’s leg are from a stroke. He’s worse than that reporter who bowed to Obama, and almost as bad as Obama bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia.

I hope the opposition to Obamacare keeps growing. Polls mean little really; they’re more about making news than anything. Maybe I’m too optimistic here, but particulars that people favor are nice-to-have items they know won’t work in reality. Polls can be spun to achieve a desired result by phrasing questions the right way. Hell, you can do a poll that says most Americans claim Lincoln shot himself if you ask the right questions.

The part I take with more than a grain of salt is that Americans oppose Obama’s plan, which is good enough for me right now.

I’m getting really angry with the GOP and Conservative groups. Where the He1l is the Constitutional pushback on Obamacare?

While it’s good to attack the specifics of the proposals to expose the totalitarianism of the Left, the entire debate should be ended by challenging the Democrats to cite where in the Constitution they derive the authority for nationalizing health care.

If we can’t or won’t draw a Constitutional line in the sand here and now when will we if ever? The Constitution is our absolute best defense against the Progressive agenda. If we negotiate an unconstitutional bill we grant legitimacy to the concept and can expect the Left to keep pushing until they achieve 100% of their goal.

Fair enough. I just find all the different versions of “reform” (the House version, Senate version, Blue Dogs version, and Obama’s forthcoming version) a bit surprising, at this stage of the game. I agree, though, that they wish they were pitching their plan, whichever one, to a different, more pliable, public.

venividivici on September 1, 2009 at 8:43 PM

Neither party wants to adhere to the law.
DerKrieger on September 1, 2009 at 8:40 PM

No, they don’t. Which is why I advocate a third party. But any possible third-place lacks tactics. For years the educational system has dodged teaching the Constitution in school, when I was once made to memorize the Bill of Rights and had to write them for a test. That teaching is replaced by ‘self-esteem’ classes or something nowadays.

Grass-roots: talk to family and friends to get them onboard. Find a local party that is conservative and research them. Amazingly, there’s a Conservative Party here in NY of all places.

Scary, isn’t it, we have to ‘sell’ the Constitution all over again?

Why aren’t we talking about H.R. 3400???

It’s the GOP’s alternative to this leftist debacle. It was introduced by Rep. Tom Price on July 30th and Pelosi has it buried in EIGHT different committees…while the President lies to the American people and says the GOP supports only the status quo and has no ideas.

Well…H.R. 3400 has ideas I support wholeheartedly, is only 67 pages long and would actually *gasp!* make health care more affordable and coverage more accessible.

The Empowering Patients First Act, or H.R. 3400, would allow:

* Individuals to choose their health insurance (no mandates)

* Deductibility of health insurance premiums regardless of who pays

* Employers to provide flexible health-insurance options to employees

* Health insurance coverage for low-income families (300 percent of the federal poverty level)

* Health insurance for high-risk individuals (pre-existing conditions)

* Sale of health insurance across state lines

* Expansion of Health Savings Accounts, or HSAs

* Individual membership association health insurance plan

* Association Health Insurance Plans

* Medical liability limitations (Tort reform)

It’s a great start… so… WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS?!??

Why aren’t they screaming about this every time a mic is put in front of them?

If they can’t promote their own dang legislation, it’ll be up to us to do so.

I have a better idea: Washington drops the entire notion of national health insurance and goes by the Constitution for once. My health insurance choices should NEVER involve the government on any level.

Remember Clinton went on to win in 1996 after suffering a total defeat on Hillarycare. But Bill is a master politician and understands you have to change your tactics when the landscape changes. As Obama is in over his head, I’d say he won’t change and will simply go down in flames, feeling morally superior the entire time.

If this Obamacrap gets passed, wait till they take a look at auto insurance and decide ‘something needs to be done’.

Liam on September 1, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Do you remember in “Cool Hand Luke” where they were paving the road and the bosses had planned for it to take all afternoon and the chain gang did it in about 20 minutes. The bosses kept looking at their watches trying to figure what to do next.
That’s what is happening to Obama’s handlers. It wasn’t suppose to go this way and they never made in continuity plans in case they failed.

So there’s a glimmer of hope yet for the masses of sheeples.

Some of their brains are starting to digest the horry story of what zerobambi is and are starting to have second thoughts.

Too bad they couldn’t exercise that damned gray matter last november.

They did exercise it. And passed out.

Michelle, why won’t the damn dog play with me anymore?”

“Barack, leave the dog alone…he’s watching Fox News!”

“DAMN!”

Clinton ‘triangulated’ and tacked Right. Obama is loathe to do the same. Thus, I agree with your point and hope that he follows the Carter path… into oblivion.

DrW on September 1, 2009 at 9:46 PM

place your bets on the Obama Resign In Protest poll above(aka Obama RIP)….

Ted, I’ll throw in a bowl of shredded wheat. Hillary will resign first.

Lightswitch on September 1, 2009 at 10:04 PM

Does anyone know what the break down is? If his overall approval is over 55% then there are probably a lot of Democrats in the poll, that might explain why people support stuff like the public option.

MARIE ANTOINETTE: Kingy dear–what is all that noise outside the palace?
***
KING LOUIS XVI: Just the peasants complaining about nothing to eat–and no health care. Ignore them–they’ll get tired and cold and go away soon.
***
MARIE ANTOINETTE: We don’t have any bread–maybe we could give them some cake.
***
KING LOUIS XVI: Don’t worry–I’ll raise their taxes and confiscate their hovels soon. It works every time.

MARIE ANTOINETTE: What’s that chopping sound??

Once they promise that only the rich and the military-industrial complex will be footing the bill, his numbers will go up.

I’m too cynical to believe that the sheeple out there are against this on principle, nor are tuned in enough to know that socialized medicine is failing in other countries.

Chris Matthews is truely in Love w/ Hussein the Clown and BJ Clinton

BigMike252 on September 2, 2009 at 1:01 AM

Why Obama hasn’t offered his own “plan” is not surprising. He’s never done any of the spade work (can I say that?) on ANY legislation of interest, from the state level to the U.S. Senate, so why start now? Let other do the work, including writing his speeches, all he has to do is stand up and babble them from his teleprompter and the world will be saved. Or not.

Meanwhile puppetmasters Axelrod and Emanuel laugh behind the curtain.

bradley11 on September 2, 2009 at 7:18 AM

As bad as Obama is ticking everyone off America may be starting to ask if we really need the office of President anyhow.

Jeff from WI on September 2, 2009 at 7:46 AM

Think about the last three DEM Presidents.

Carter, Clinton, Obama

You’ve got to start laughing at how absurd it is.
