Oh my: New Zogby poll shows Obama’s approval at … 42%

posted at 8:31 pm on August 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

It’s not quite as bad as it looks, but it’s plenty bad. Since last month, he’s down 13 points among Democrats, nine points among liberals, and 18 points among voters 18 to 29.

No public option, no peace?

Pollster John Zogby: President Obama is now firmly between a rock and a hard place. Democrats want a strong healthcare reform bill with a public option. Republicans and more conservative Democrats do not agree. If Obama fails to get a bill that his base supporters want, the entire Democratic Party risks alienating them; especially 18-29-year-old First Globals, who could very quickly become disenchanted with politics. Obama needs to enter the fray in a very public way, which may mean knocking heads with both wings of his own party.

He’s actually up slightly among likely voters in the last 10 days — coincidentally, while he’s been on vacation and off the television screen — but it’s the monthly trend that’s an eye-popper. Doesn’t this foretell a shift left, to win back Democrats, when he finally returns to D.C.? He’s already lost any little amount of trust conservatives and right-leaning independents might ever have had in him; just too much government, too soon, and no compromise “health-care co-op” is going to change that. All it’ll do is leave the left feeling they can’t trust him either, which means no money or organization next year and no one except wary centrists even somewhat pleased with health care. The smartest available move, it seems increasingly to me, is to push for a public option, make the left happy, and then throw the full weight of your propaganda machine into convincing centrists before the midterms that government health care is a genius idea. Sure, it’ll mean sacrificing a few Blue Dog seats to the GOP next year, but it looks like that’s a fait accompli anyway. And even if Republicans take back the House, they won’t have a veto-proof majority (or even control of the Senate) that they’d need to repeal ObamaCare, so the deed will be done. If you’re Barry O, you might as well get what you want, keep part of the public excited about you, and take your chances.

I love good news and this is good news.

Here I thought all my life being dedicated to the military (which liberals hate) was a manner to show my love for my country.

Good to see you Hawkdriver! We know why we all serve-God bless the USA. Be strong and fight the good fight. We’ve got your back at home.

indypat on September 1, 2009 at 8:43 AM

Since just when did you become a part of the Obama campaign advisory committee, Allahpundit?

Suggesting “the smartest available move” Obama could make?!

That constitutes “trash talk” in my book.

Between your nonsense and Krauthammer’s recent cynical screed (http://townhall.com/columnists/CharlesKrauthammer/2009/08/28/obamacare_the_only_exit_strategy) I’m just not sure what to make of such “pundits”…could it just be jockeying for journalistic position?

Don’t know, but to me, it stinks.

Lockstein13 on September 1, 2009 at 8:47 AM

Afro,

Please enlighten us with one example here in America of a state controlled by Democrats for a decade or longer, that isn’t in financial trouble… Just one example.

You call it the progressive movement, we look at the facts and call it an absolute failure for mankind. Democrats and some Republicans, have been throwing billions upon billions of tax payer dollars at poverty for my entire life (55,) but yet poverty is worse today than ever before. Democrats have been throwing billions upon billions of tax payer dollars at solving the problem of the homeless, but yet there are more homeless today than ever before.

Liberalism is a failed experiment; failed around the world; failed every time a country was stupid enough to implement such a plan.

Keemo on September 1, 2009 at 8:48 AM

Unlike some people who claim they love this country but whine all day when asked to cough up some money to take care of some of their fellow citizens who aren’t as fortunate as them.

Afrolib on August 31, 2009 at 10:22 PM

As “fortunate”.

Please. People who think 12 years of free public education is for suckers, people who know it’s more fun to go out drinking and drugging all night than get up to go to work in the morning, people who won’t work for “chump change” and people who are in this country illegally.

The safety net in this country is a hammock and the more $$$ we give to losers, the more entrenched in sloth they get and the more of them there are.

It’s the deficit. His popularity will slide because of the stimulus bill that really wasn’t a stimulus bill at all.

A lot of governors who objected to taking the money will be rewarded soon. What they warned about is very likely to happen, as DC starts yanking the chains.

AnninCA on September 1, 2009 at 8:40 AM

Good observation Ann. Obama is forcing state’s to defend themselves from the federal government. Watch as the people (state by state) start using such devices as the “recall” option on their elected representatives for a complete failure to represent the people, and a complete willingness to represent Liberalism. These Democrats (and some Republicans) went to DC for the purpose of representing their party rather than their constituents. The day of reckoning is coming.

Keemo on September 1, 2009 at 8:58 AM

The smartest available move, it seems increasingly to me, is to push for a public option, make the left happy, and then throw the full weight of your propaganda machine into convincing centrists before the midterms that government health care is a genius idea.

Late to the discussion but that only works if you make the assumption that healthcare reform is the only thing dragging the filthy liar’s poll numbers down. I think the anti-Obama numbers are more reflective of a bigger pattern of bad stewardship, partisanship, and no clear message. Forcing through a public option on a party-line vote with questionable use of reconciliation will only make the moonbats happy for awhile. The bigger challenge is that he will ultimately, IMO, alienate more people than he brings back into his cult followers.

AnninCA on September 1, 2009 at 8:40 AM

Umm, what do you think a stimulus is?

A stimulus is a bunch of money set aside for political allies that doesn’t get spent until long after the recovery starts.

My understanding is this is part of the reason we moved to tax cuts a stimulus, as that money is immediately realized by people best qualified to spend it effectively, the people who earned it.

This low approval watch is interesting. What you people don’t realize is that once Obama’s potential challenger sticks his (or her) little head up, the Democratic machine will destroy them.

Obama’s approval is a result of being in the arena. No Republican has the guts to jump in the arena with him. That includes for the spineless Conservative pundits throwing bricks at the the grownups in the arena. It is very easy to throw bricks from the sidelines. Time to jump in. The water is great.

Once the cycle completes and the Republicans regain power, the low approval watch will continue from the Democrats as it did with Bush. This little Democrat-Republican game will continue and the victims will be the general public. You people celebrate a low approval of the President of the US like it is a NFL football game.

If you are not an Independent voter you are simply a pawn in the Left-Right/Liberal-Conservative little game and ripe for the picking by Conservative pundits who use you for ratings.

Liberals don’t attack them on race. Republicans attack Obama on race as witnessed at the tea parties, during the 2008 Palin campaign rallies, and current in the town halls.

I am not saying all Republicans are racists but certainly all racists are Republicans.

Your logic is impenetrable!

How can one reason with the unreasonable?

My question is this: do these commenters actually believe this nonsense? This much I think is true: even if they don’t believe it, the more they repeat it the more they embrace it. And if that’s the case we can never win over such fools with reason.

The sad part is that most of these liberal do-gooders don’t realize that the things they are advocating are detrimental to their own well-being and would be manifested ever more so in their children’s lives.

Goddamn America.

By the way…..How about this…Obama to address the entire nations’ Elementary schools LIVE on 9/8.

My kids will NOT be attending.

Surely this only applies to public school kids? He can’t get into the private schools too can he?

I hope that Allahpundit, Ed, or Michelle, or better yet, all of the above, will pick up on this little morsel.

If we cede this ground to the left, all is lost.

I guess that would be up to the particular school administration and/or teacher in a private setting.

It’s too bad that teaching the basics has given way to indoctrination in many of our schools. If we can’t reverse this trend, the future of a free America with individual rights paramount is in dire jeopardy.

Oh, bulls**t. I’m glad you get paid to do this by the hour, because I’d have NO respect for someone who trolls for free.

Hmmm Seems to me the REAL racists are the 90%+ blacks who will vote on skin color EVERY TIME, regardless of how bad they are getting f@#$*d. How can you get more racist than that?

Fishoutofwater on September 1, 2009 at 12:50 PM

Like the 80% of Blacks who voted against Micheal Steele in Maryland and voted for his White challenger for Senate? Of course let’s not let the facts bust the Fox News misinformation bubble you live in. Let’s just blame the “Mainstream Media” for Steele’s loss.

The GOP has a huge race problem. It can try to deny it or it can try to blame it on the “Liberal Mainstream Media” or whatever the latest Conservative whine is for the moment but it certainly can not be denied.

The GOP’s most popular commentator at the moment, Glenn Beck, is a race baiting Charlatan who is the White equivalent of Al Sharpton. The GOP poster girl, Sarah Palin uses terms such as “Real Americans” to promote it’s “Vote White” policy. The GOP teabagging resembles a KKK rally from the 1960s as does their national conventions.

Racism is a cancer that is destroying the GOP.

Thank you for confirming for me the campaign strategy Obama is going to employ in 2012 to get re-elected or perhaps in 2010 to save the Democratic Party from being eviscerated in the midterms.

The only thing I didn’t envision was the ‘race card’ would be pulled out of the deck so soon in the political proceedings. Perhaps this is a sign of how desperate Obama has become.

Where have all the bumper stickers gone?

Rockygold on September 1, 2009 at 5:08 PM

At some point Obama is going to have to get these poll takers on the phone and have a serious talk with them.
Do they want Obama and thus America, to fail or do they want Obama and America to succeed?!
