Harry Reid cheers unemployment in Las Vegas media!

posted at 11:36 am on August 31, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

That, I think, is a better takeaway than the “threat” meme resulting from Harry Reid’s bon mot with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which has been highly critical of the Senate Majority Leader.  Reid went out of his way to be rude to an advertising manager at the LVRJ during a luncheon, then tried clumsily to claw backwards a bit later.  Nevertheless, the LVRJ took Reid to task for his attack:

On Wednesday, before he addressed a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Reid joined the chamber’s board members for a meet-’n'-greet and a photo. One of the last in line was the Review-Journal’s director of advertising, Bob Brown, a hard-working Nevadan who toils every day on behalf of advertisers. He has nothing to do with news coverage or the opinion pages of the Review-Journal.

Yet, as Bob shook hands with our senior U.S. senator in what should have been nothing but a gracious business setting, Reid said: “I hope you go out of business.”

Later, in his public speech, Reid said he wanted to let everyone know that he wants the Review-Journal to continue selling advertising because the Las Vegas Sun is delivered inside the Review-Journal.

Does anyone dispute that this remark was rude, mean-spirited, and petty, especially considering Reid’s lofty position?   I doubt it.  However, Sherman Frederick at the LVRJ reads just a little too much into it:

But to fully capture the magnitude of Reid’s remark (and to stop him from doing the same thing to others) it must be called what it was — a full-on threat perpetrated by a bully who has forgotten that he was elected to office to protect Nevadans, not sound like he’s shaking them down. …

If he thinks he can push the state’s largest newspaper around by exacting some kind of economic punishment in retaliation for not seeing eye to eye with him on matters of politics, I can only imagine how he pressures businesses and individuals who don’t have the wherewithal of the Review-Journal.

Eh.  What was the threat?  Reid may wish on the next falling star that the LVRJ’s ad dollars dry up?  The US Senate has nothing to do with a local newspaper, so Harry Reid’s ability to threaten Frederick’s paper is extremely limited.  He might have friends in Nevada who can cause them trouble, but even these days, most politicians know better than to strongarm newspapers over editorial policy.  Buying them off works better, at least in Chicago.  Given Reid’s rapidly-dropping popularity in Nevada, I doubt that anyone would take that seriously as a threat outside of the LVRJ’s newsroom.

To me, it’s only slightly more sinister than the oft-expressed sentiment in the blogosphere that certain newspapers go out of business, with the New York Times at the top of the list.  As consumers, we probably have more power in the aggregate to effect that than Reid does with the LVRJ.

Susan Ferecchio has a better take at the Washington Examiner:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., could be facing one of the toughest re-election battles of his career and while he has pronounced himself ready and eager for the fight, there is evidence the pressure might be getting to him.

Reid last week fully antagonized the Las Vegas Review-Journal Newspaper, which has been critical of him, by reportedly telling its advertising director “I hope you go out of business” while the two shook hands at a Chamber of Commerce event. …

While Reid may perceive the paper’s treatment of him unfair, it employs more than 100 people. The unemployment rate in Las Vegas, meanwhile, jumped this month to more than 13 percent, according to the Sun.

That sounds like two better angles.  Reid is losing his cool and showing that the barbs are sticking to his flesh — and he wants to see people unemployed in Las Vegas.  One can make the latter argument about his entire legislative agenda of high spending, pork projects, and government control.

I’m certain I’ll get a lot of disagreement on this, so let’s poll Hot Air readers:

He’s the Senate Majority Leader.

Yeah, he probably can’t do too much to them, but who knows?

If you own or manage that newspaper, do you want to take that chance?

Particularly with this bandit cabal in the White House and in Congress?

Reid is an absolutely piece of rotten garbage and this is one of his milder crimes against the American people.

NoDonkey on August 31, 2009 at 11:47 AM

Don’t get me wrong, I think Harry Reid is a reprehensible douche, and if he was joking it was pretty mean-spirited, but… he doesn’t seem to have flipped his lid to the level that would have him saying things like that out loud to somebody who would be genuinely hurt by it if it actually happened.

Harry Reid is behind in the polls and the state’s largest newspaper is extremely critical of his actions- Of course he wants the LVRJ wants them to fail the same way that Nixon wasn’t a fan of the Washington Post.

Think about it. If Reid is defeated next year it will be 2 for 2 of sitting Democrat Senate minority leaders defeated in their bids to stay in power. Perhaps Dems should just appoint a Kennedy to the position.

thomasaur on August 31, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Judging by the increasing instances of thuggery from the Democrats — with Osama Obama taking the lead — I think a threat to the LVRJ was implied, if not actually laid out on the table, in Reid’s remarks.

Surely one of the Child-President’s “czars” can work with Reid to insure that something bad happens to the paper….

Sometimes, I think Ed tends to bend over backwards to attribute more civility and/or decency to the left-wing goon squads than is actually present. It’s all well and good to look at politics as a kind of game, with everyone shaking hands and smiling at the end of the day, but the time when that was true has passed, if indeed it ever really existed.

I would take Reid’s words as an out-and-out threat, one he has the tools (thanks to the current administration) to carry out. And I would throw them back in his face at every opportunity. As long as the enemy plays hardball, we have to do the same.

MrScribbler on August 31, 2009 at 11:53 AM

Joking may be a little strong word to use. After all, Harry Reid isn’t a name that immediately comes to mind when one thinks of the great Las Vegas comedians. I think it more along the lines of a bitter remark that reflects the reality that the state’s largest newspaper is hurting his chances at re-election.

I can see the statement in the context of “my life would be easier without your paper” but let’s remember where he was. He was at a luncheon and he didn’t know the guy from the LVRJ. That’s not the time to be making ambiguous “jokes.”

The way I see it, Reid will be out in 2010. There’s probably an anti-incumbent feeling in Nevada right now. The governorship will go to a Democrat because of the shenanigans of Gibbons. He royally screwed up any chance for a Republican to win, as far as I’m concerned.

NathanG on August 31, 2009 at 12:02 PM

MirCat on August 31, 2009 at 12:06 PM

Thanks for posting this Ed! My takeaway is that Hary Reid proves he is the dumbest POS in DC. He goes after the largest newspaper in Nevada one year before reelection. Whether or not he meant it or has any influence over the paper’s continuity, to say this out loud gives an opponent and media in Nevada the opportunity to spin this any way they want. In this economic environment, wishing negative outcomes on your constituents is political suicide.

NebCon on August 31, 2009 at 12:13 PM

Ed’s off on this, although noted wankpaddle Reid didn’t make an explicit threat. This is nothing like private citizens on the internet wishing the NYT to go under. Why? Because Reid is an elected official, a Senator, and leader of the Demotards in the Senate. It’s as inappropriate as when Barry felt the heat of criticism and lowered his office and dignity (lack thereof) by personally naming and attacking private citizens for their opinions, viz., Rush Limbaugh.

If you’re a Senator, act like one. Tell the LVRJ that you don’t agree with their editorials. But don’t get in a four-year old huff and whine “I hope you go out of business.”

Rush can say “I hope he fails,” and I say it too. But we’re not Senators or Presidents. That gives us leeway Reid and Obastard don’t deserve… because they have powers in office dwarfing anything private citizens do, and moreover: They work for us. Something they choose to ignore.

What a dream to imagine Reid, Schumer and Dodd all sitting in their campaign headquarters on election night remembering their glory days and asking the question “what did we do to upset the serfs (aka mob)”

How crude and rude and typical of Reid.

I do not HOPE the New York Times goes out of business, I KNOW it will if they continue as they are now.

This knowledge gives me great joy.

Isn’t Reid the idiot that wants a 20 billion dollar high speed train from LA to Vegas? That would bleed about 500 million a year subsidy to operate it.

Ed,

Excellent post, as always, but maybe the next poll shouldn’t have the same color letters as is used in part of the background?
