Union payoff should get stripped from ObamaCare: Detroit News

posted at 8:05 am on August 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier in the week, we found out that unions have good reasons to conduct an Astroturf campaign on behalf of ObamaCare — in fact, ten billion good reasons.  The Detroit Free Press reported that HR3200 gives a $10,000,000,000 subsidy to union pension and benefit plans, a key component that had gone largely unremarked.  Later in the week, the Detroit News’ editorial board blasted the payoff and demanded its removal:

One reason the public so distrusts the health care plan being considered by Congress is that so many troublesome details keep bubbling out of the massive legislation.

The latest example is the $10 billion taxpayers will be asked to shell out to prop up the United Auto Workers’ retiree health insurance program. …

In effect, it would ask every taxpayer, regardless of whether they’ll have health insurance coverage themselves after they retire — and most won’t — to chip in to maintain the UAW’s coverage, which even after the union’s givebacks is still better than what the average American worker receives.

That’s one important point to remember.  Union health plans will be exempt from the limitations of ObamaCare, allowing unions to operate as insurers while forcing everyone else into government-approved plans in “exchanges”.  Instead of having the union pay for their own plans, taxpayers will subsidize them, while getting less themselves.

The Detroit News notes that the biggest beneficiary of this largesse will be the United Auto Workers, whose pension plans are in serious trouble.  This should be a showstopper anyway, as the American taxpayer has bailed out the UAW not once but twice, first in dumping billions of dollars into GM and Chrysler, and then in the politicized bankruptcies that gave the UAW large portions of both companies.

We’ve spent enough on the UAW, thank you very much.  As the editorial argues, it’s up to the UAW to adjust their pension plans to bring them into financial reality, not to the American taxpayers to subsidize their failure for a third time in a year.

Ed,
Thanks for posting this! My BlueDog congressman hasn’t mentioned that UAW will get $10 Billion if HR3200 passes. Perhaps he hasn’t read the bill – just in case, I’m going to mail him a copy of the DFP article.

UAW is just another Special Interest group Obama and Democrats cater to. Obama/Kennedy healthcare reform is not about providing care for the needy; it’s about paying back their supporters (UNIONS), G.E., and controlling the nation’s number one employer (health industry) and invading every aspect of our privacy.

Only if we allow them to get away with it. Nothing has to happen. As with all pension plans that go belly up (at least prior to this), the plan participants get very reduced benefits paid for by the pool of insurance payment imposed on other plans. Medical benifits in any plan can change and do the UAW should be no different. The Mob has pissed away union money for decades and these fools keep electing them to run the unions so screw them. We have to stop the Democrats from using the tax payers as piggy banks for their voting base.

OT sorta:
Barack Obama must abandon the Kennedy way, or he will fail

So Obama will have to make a choice: stick with the liberalism of Kennedy, or move to the centre, as Clinton did after the Republican landslide in 1994. Clinton revived his presidency, won approval for welfare reform, was re-elected, and warded off impeachment.

Kennedy and other liberals fumed at his apostasy, and that bloc is determined to keep the President from “pulling a Clinton”.

Clinton was a politician. Obama is a Marxist.

He will not move to the center. Expect the unexpected.

This is what they think at Huffpo:

It isn’t bailing out unions it’s helping your fellow citizens who took drastic benefit cuts to keep an American Corporation in business as well as millions of other feeder jobs.

The question should be why wouldn’t every American as well as these workers or fellow citizens want to make sure every person has health insurance and no one has to die or suffer because they don’t have the means to pay for the medical treatment they require.

Just so you know.

The latest example is the $10 billion taxpayers will be asked to shell out to prop up the United Auto Workers’ retiree health insurance program. …

Even, (or when this gets thrown out), of HR 3200, what we have to keep in mind is there are other UNREGULATED FUNDS that Obama can directly pay into the UAW fiasco—either through TARP or the 90% unused balance of the stimulus porkulus package. Not only should this provision be taken OUT OF THE BILL, but legislation should MUST be written in to forbid the UAW from recieving ANY TAXPAYER MONEY to save these rediculous and asinine pension plans.

And anyone who thinks it will ONLY be $10 billion wasn’t paying attention during Cash for Clunkers. Here’s a great quote from the Freep article.

John Sheils, vice president of the Lewin Group, a health care research firm owned by a United Healthcare subsidiary, said the money likely will run out in less than two years. Then, like with the recent cash-for-clunkers clamor, Congress could feel obligated to add money to the program.

That $10 billion will turn into $50 billion+ in no time.

Meezles on August 29, 2009 at 9:28 AM

The theme continues, punish all taxpayers and reward the unions for their own gross negligence and fiduciary irresponsibility. Essentially, this provision would have all taxpayers paying union dues. The Detroit News should blast the UAW for the millions it spent in campaign contributions instead of applying those funds into their own programs.

In related news, the MSM will add union-haters to the list of those opposing this bill.

Spot on, and I would add that their ultimate objective, by doing the things you’ve outlined, is to ensure their power and control in perpetuity.

I can’t quote this enough as it is at the very foundation of their ideology: “The purpose of war is not to defeat the enemy, but to wipe them from the face of the earth.” — Vladimir Lenin

And, there is no doubt that they consider anyone who does not think like or agree with them, i.e., the vast majority of Americans, is the enemy.

We underestimate these people at our own peril.

Well, I am impressed. We canceled our Detroit News subscription two months ago after being customers in excess of 20 years. They unfortunately have turned into a local paper. With all that is going on in DC, nothing ever in the paper. I am impressed they actually did an article against the union.

Since the rubes on the right didn’t go to Princeton University, this is all over our collective heads. So take your medicine and bow our savior.

Hey, union goons need superior health care to keep their strength up to intimidate women and old people. Also to kick the occasional puppy & baby.

We probably have to keep reading.

Taxing the Many to Pay the Few

UAW spokespeople have roundly condemned the estimate of labor costs in excess of $70 per current worker hour. They assert these figures include the cost of current retiree pension and health benefits. They have done so, however, without marshalling evidence to support their case.
The Detroit automakers explain in their SEC filings that their benefit expenses are for current workers, not former employees. This is because they follow generally accepted accounting principles in preparing these estimates. If the figures did include current retiree benefits, the average hourly amount would be much higher than they actually report. UAW employees earn far more than most Americans do. Congress should not tax all Americans to bailout the Detroit automakers in order to preserve high earnings for a few…….James Sherk

Where’s Obama’s pledge to Joe the Plumber where he said he would “spread the wealth around”????

Lest anyone forgets, Andy Stern(SEIU), Paul Booth(AFSCME) and a whole host others in the Team Obama base are leftovers from Bill Ayers’ SDS/Weather Underground.

G Beck has only scratched the surface when it comes to SDS infiltration into the DC halls of power.

The “enemy” is inside the perimeter, and we are seriously in danger of being “over-run!”

Union people believe they work for the union and not the company that hands out the paychecks.

Back in college I worked at a grocery and belonged to the UFCW, and I SO resented paying their dues, and MANDATORALLY contributing to their sleazy charities, that the store management would require us to contribute to- I would try to utilize every benefit I could squeeze out of them and when it came time to strike, I stayed home from work, picked up my strike pay for six months, and then never went back. As did about 50% of the stores employees. The UFCW sent me hate mail for about four years. Little by little, most unions have given away all the workers rights to continue to pad their administrative pockets.

Outrageous but not surprising…we have got to retake America folks…I’m tired of bailing out the unions!

This makes me sick to my stomach.

Makes a nice question to be asked at town hall meetings. Not just a demand that the subsidy be removed, but why it was included and why the authors of the bill should be trusted when special interests are being subsidized at cost to the rest.

It’s liberalism 101 > actual equality = inequality, therefore actual inequality = equality. It makes perfect sense if you’re completely braindead & immoral. Maybe that’s why you dam conservatives have such a hard time with these concepts… you really need to get off you azzes and become braindead & immoral. Then you can gain the sacred ability to use the word ‘actual’ anyway you see fit. The word ‘actual’ becomes your weapon of choice. Especially when it has no ‘actual’ meaning other than to justify your ‘actual’ braindead concepts. There now, isn’t that easy? You can change reality, cover up corruption, remove all doubt… anything you want to do… just by inserting ‘actual’ into any argument.

Hey spineless mccain and the gop, let’s be bipartisan and help poor o out with his people killing, spirit killing bill.

The real question should be, why won’t the Dems & Obama make Tort Reform part of the HR3200? Why do they refuse to accept any suggestions from the GOP, like erasing state borders on health insurance and/or allow small business to pool together??

TN Mom on August 29, 2009 at 9:33 AM

Because they have no interest in improving health care or expanding coverage. They absolutely have no interest in lowering costs in spite of the talking points.

This is about control, and using the opportunity to pay off allies.
