Percentage of Israelis who say Obama is pro-Israel: Four
posted at 6:03 pm on August 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Israel Matzav. Actually, the poll asks whether he’s more pro-Israel than pro-Palestinian, not whether he’s pro-Israel in the abstract. But even so — four percent? Dude, the margin of error is 4.5 percent. He’s within the margin of error of zero.
A few more months of pushing ObamaCare and he might be there in America, too.
Fifty-one percent of Jewish Israelis consider Obama’s administration more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israel, according to the survey, while 35% consider it neutral and 10% declined to express an opinion. The poll of 500 people representing a statistical model of the Jewish Israeli population had a margin of error of 4.5%.
A much-cited Post poll published on June 19 that put the first figure at 6% had been cited by top officials in both the White House and the Prime Minister’s Office as the catalyst for recent American efforts to improve the American-Israeli relationship. But the new poll proves that those efforts have not improved Obama’s reputation among Israelis…
The May poll found that Israelis’ views of Obama’s predecessor in the White House, George W. Bush, were nearly the opposite. Some 88% of Israelis considered Bush’s administration pro-Israel, 7% said he was neutral and just 2% labeled him pro-Palestinian.
Note that the numbers here don’t turn (at least not exclusively) on Obama’s opposition to Israeli settlements: 41 percent of those surveyed said they’d be willing to freeze settlements for a year as part of a U.S.-brokered peace deal. In which case, what explains the abysmal result? Settlements + dithering on Iran + the Cairo pandering to Muslims + The One’s obsession with being the anti-Bush + his pro-Palestinian past + … anything I’m leaving out? I don’t think Blagojevich sunk as low as four percent in Illinois even at the height of his scandal. Great, great job, Barry. Exit question: Since we’re all about “smart power” now, how smart is it for Obama to have alienated literally the entire Israeli population ahead of peace negotiations? Every concession Netanyahu makes will be excruciatingly painful given the widespread assumption among his constituents that the game is fixed. Is there any way, short of a strike on Iran, that O boosts Israeli confidence in him back up to reasonable levels? (Answer: No.)
Update: Actually, it’s not fair to say he’s alienated everyone; 35 percent say he’s at least neutral between the two sides. It’d be more accurate to say virtually no one considers him a strong ally, which of course was exactly what he promised he’d be when he appeared before AIPAC during the campaign.

The two most left-wing, Israel-hating Jewish parties have 6% of the Knesset, which means that they have more Jewish support than 6%, since arab parties also have around 6% of the Knesset. The Precedent can’t even get the full support of these lunatics on the Jewish side. Wow.

I’m confused as to why there is such a disconnect between American Jews, who claim patronage for Israel yet support BHO, and Israeli Jews.
I would think that the ones who live here would have more information to make an intelligent decision on BHO’s middle east policies. Then again, they do vote democrap, over and over, and over.
So now, it’s come to this. So I ask, can they still claim patronage for Israel?

American support for Israel is more important to Israeli Jews (for which it’s pretty much the only reason they’d much care about America’s President) and American Jews (who have other issues). American Jewish voters aren’t single-issue, and, on most fiscal, social, and international issues, lean left. Refugees of the Holocaust (and their descendants) have fond memories (and impressions) of FDR and Truman. Jews found themselves parts of movements that were dominated by the left, be they Trotskyism, civil rights, anti-war, or gay rights. They also live mostly in urban areas, surrounded by fellow leftists, often pursuing careers (or parts thereof) in entertainment, government, the arts, or academia; all of these categories are even more slavishly leftist than Jews in general. There’s a healthy suspicion of religion in politics, both due to the First Amendment, but also due to a history of government/religious persecution.
Of those who view Israel as a primary issue, some might be selective and compare Truman’s stance with that of George H.W. Bush. But others recognize that Democrats are less slavishly pro-Israel and figure that Israel and its neighbors can thus only progress towards peace under a Democrat. (There is something to that, as prior accords were reached under the last two Democrats, one accord starting with the actions of the least pro-Israel Republican, Bush 41. And Clinton came out after his failed and pretty much said that it was Arafat’s fault.) Heck, for people who believe this, Obama not being pro-Israel is seen as necessarily a bad thing. I’m not saying I agree, but it does explain part of the disconnect.
calbear on August 28, 2009 at 6:53 PM
Jews developed an irrational fear of a “Christian theocracy” being established under Republican administrations, beginning in the 1980s. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson are terrifying figures to most American Jews. Democrats have convinced them that these people control the Republican Party and Republicans eventually want to marginalize and ostracize the Jews. When George W. Bush declared in a 2000 Republican debate that his favorite philosopher was Jesus Christ, it scared the crap out of them. This stuff is WAY more visceral and important to them than what happens to Israel.
rockmom on August 28, 2009 at 6:55 PM
You forgot: (1) bundling East Jerusalem into the “settlements” category, which even the State Department never did, (2) giving Mary Robinson the MOF, which for some reason grated for two or three news cycles in Israel, (3) early dithering on Durban II, (4) the Gaza stimulus package, (5) the feeling on the Israeli left that he’s specifically gone out of his way to alienate them, and I’m probably forgetting several more.

Might I be so bold to submit that Israelis, through personal experience or through a special knowledge of their own pained history, understand first hand the cold reality of tyranny at the hands of a national socialism movement in their primary country of origin… NAZI Germany.
Almost all of them know that the socialists then took over the banks, the auto industry, the healthcare system, and energy. Then came the really bad stuff we all know about.
They also have experienced first hand, and long before we did, terrorism propigated by nations controlled by religious zealots, all adherents of Islam.
What they see here, I’m sure, is an American president going down the first road and giving comfort to those on the second one.
I’m not a Jew nor a blind supporter of Israel, but can’t discard or deny what they see. I stand with the 96%.

Chuck Schick on August 28, 2009 at 7:31 PM
Actually, the unfortunate truth is that Israel is very socialist, though that has been changing (for the better) over the recent years. Many of the founders were Jewish communists, ergo the kibbutzim – which were the purest implementations of socialism the planet has ever seen, on scales that were the most workable, and whose downfalls are very instructive on the basic flaws of socialism and show better than anything else why socialism can never work. Still, a sizeable percentage of Israeli Jews bend towards socialism. This poll reflects something much more problematic; a very serious fear of the state being physically annihilated. So much so that even many of the Israeli Jews who vote for parties that want to weaken the state are scared that The Precedent has plans for Israel that go far beyond anything they ever entertained. Israeli Jews recognize the anti-Western nature of The Precedent and even the self-haters among them cannot believe what they see coming.
That’s my view of it, anyway.

In other words, Obama’s base consists primarily of two groups: the unemployable and the unemployable.
52% of Americans get more money from the federal government than they pay in. And Obama got 52% of the vote. I don’t care what the polls say, he’s going to get at least a 10% higher percentage in 2012.
logis on August 28, 2009 at 8:24 PM
My pleasure, TXUS. I didn’t want to step on your point, which was an entirely reasonable conclusion to come to. I spent a couple of years on kibbutzim and learned everything I needed to know about socialism from that – the kibbutzim used to have the really whacko-left influences, such as children all being raised in a communal house, outside of the parents’ home – all sorts of truly crazy stuff. But even the died-in-the-wool socialists who built them could not sustain the socialist structures, as the later generations of kibbutzniks were just disgusted by the practices, which were unnatural, and then they ran them all to financial ruin – except for a couple or three – and that was the end of that. Now, most kibbutzim have been privatized and sold off, or at least have had to redesign themselves to take individualism into account (i.e. having individual accounts for everyone and having people pay for their own electricity and such), which was all a huge no-no before.
Interestingly, the kibbutzim turned out huge percentages of elite fighters (something like 10 times their representation among the top commando units and pilots) but I think that had a lot more to do with the fact that they were the farming communities than anything else.
