“One of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself”; Update: Audio added

posted at 8:48 am on August 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

As long as we’re on the subject of humor this morning, what kind of jokes did the late Ted Kennedy like to tell his closest friends?  One of Kennedy’s close friends, former editor of Newsweek and New York Times Magazine Ed Klein, tells the Diane Rehm Show that Chappaquiddick jokes were high up on the list (audio here, at 30:10):

I don’t know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, “have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?” That is just the most amazing thing. It’s not that he didn’t feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.

Jules Crittenden wonders (with a great deal of snark) if “you had to be there.”  Mark Hemingway is aghast:

EXCUSE ME? If that’s true it makes Kennedy kind of a monster. The odd thing is that if you listen to the whole show, the tone of everyone involved is nauseatingly haigographic and reverential. Klein apparently let his guard down a bit; after he lets it slip Kennedy liked to joke about the woman he killed you can actually hear in his voice that he’s trying to backpedal. The show actually cuts to a break as he’s trying to explain himself, and I seriously wonder if it wasn’t the producers trying to do Klein a favor. But I’m sorry, there appears to be little to that could explain this. It goes way beyond “you had to be there.”

If nothing else, it puts to rest the notion that Kennedy’s remorse balances out the undeniable cowardice of his actions at Chappaquiddick.  Even allowing for the best possible spin on his actions that day, what kind of person jokes about an incident that left a young woman dead in the back of his own car?  Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) got high marks from some for joking about his arrest for indecency and acknowledging his public humiliation, but the only thing that died in the X-rated theater was Reubens’ television show.

It does set free Kennedy’s critics to talk at length about Chappaquiddick and its proportion to Kennedy’s public life.  After all, if Kennedy thought it was a topic for humor in private, then it certainly is a valid topic for serious analysis of his life as well.

Update: Had the wrong audio link; it’s fixed now.

Update II: Here’s the audio:

Teddy was a vile monster. He will not be known for Health Care. He will be known for being a drunk and a murderer. I even know Democrats and liberals who are happy he is gone because he was such an embarassment.

How mortifying does that have to be for Mary Jo’s family?

That one statement, however, tells us pretty much everything we need to know about Senator Kennedy.

The saddest thing is that I have friends who are all sad that Ted Kennedy is dead. They were posting crap on Facebook about it. Of course, I countered with something about my sympathy button being curiously missing for a Libyan terrorist and the family of a virulent Anti-Semite. They didn’t really appreciate that….

The Democrats are way off base if they think people outside The Beltway are going to be inspired by this Professional Politican and wWorld-Class Drunck’s passing so that they can pass Government-run Healthcare. It might get them a couple of votes in the Northeast, but it will not work in the rest of the country. God rest Mary Jo’s soul.

Kennedy thought it was a topic for humor in private, then it certainly is a valid topic for serious analysis of his life as well.

How can you have a “serious analysis” of Kennedy’s life without factoring in Chappaquiddick? It colored his entire poltiical career and denied him the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his talented older brothers.

Plus, in the midst of this insane Kennedy worship and mafia-style funeral, Chappaquiddick provides balance that isn’t being covered by the networks as they gush about what a wonderful human being Kennedy was.

My brother was once the cause of a fatal car accident. It was a cause of incredibly poor decisions on his part, as well as the other driver, but he was more at fault. He has never forgotten what happened and has become a different (read: better) person because of it. Too bad the same can’t be said for Ted Kennedy. (and my brother didn’t leave the woman to drown in a car either)

mjk on August 28, 2009 at 8:56 AM

Don’t forget, Teddy also tried to undermine Reagan by talking directly to the Soviets in the mid-1980′s.

I held my breath yesterday. Today I’ll say it: I’m glad he’s finally food for worms.

Have you ever worked with someone who has spent time in prison? I’ve only worked with a small sample, but they laugh at the wrong things. Their sense of humor is unsettling. Regular folks laugh at irony or a surprising unexpected viewpoint. Meanwhile ex-convicts seem to laugh at those situations where someone else gets hurt. Smash your thumb with a hammer, crash your car, someone hits
their head; bwaaahhhhhahaha.

Boy we really raped that waitress didn’t we; bwaahhahahah..

Even allowing for the best possible spin on his actions that day

You know, they say laughter is sometimes the best way to deal with a loss and this only shows how much Senator Kennedy was moved by the incident; so it’s no surprise he dedicated his life to this issue.

(This is my guess on the upcoming spin.)

It’s the political class. They are more concerned with getting along with each other and getting reelected than they are in doing what is right for America. Teddy Kennedy was in office for nearly half a century and that is significant enough for some news coverage but the way his life has been skewed by the media is absolutely disgusting.

Teddy Kennedy was a vile pig. All the Kennedys have an inbred sense of superiority that allows them to behave this way. You don’t have to look far to find examples of their depravity. Of course, our “always honest and dependable MSM” will whitewash and sanitize his history in an effort to educate us all to his magnificence.

I think that is still up for debate.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 28, 2009 at 8:57 AM

I was thinking the same thing this morning as I saw all the pomp and ceremony of the mafia-style funeral complete with generations of the family gathered in one place, the media pointing out all of Kennedy’s good works, and guest after guest lauding Kennedy’s life….

Well, one does not get to heavan through good works and I’m not sure that making jokes about what was a tragic situation shows the kind of remorse for one’s transgressions that leads to salvation. That, of course, is for God to sort out. In the meantime we are stuck with this disgusting revision of history.

highhopes on August 28, 2009 at 9:04 AM

Maybe humour was one of Kennedy’s only ways of dealing with it. Who knows. Again, none of you know him and none of you know anything about what he really did behind closed doors to help him get through it after it happened. For all the religious bullsh*t that gets thrown around here, you’re all aren’t acting very Christian – apparently you can’t do that toward a Democrat. God is watching you, and will sort you out when you die. Hooray.

I’m all for not forgetting this black mark on Kennedy’s life and he should have seen some jail time, but come the fu*k on, this is a little bit too much pi$$ being thrown on his grave.

If there is any measure of justice in the world, it is in knowing that as long as history is being recorded, Teddy The K and Chappaquiddick will be forever linked, as will his part in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.

This is why the nicest thing he ever did for the country was a couple of days ago, when he breathed his last breath and assumed room temperature.

The liberal Democrats can idolize this guy, worship at his tombstone, and say all the good and great things about him until their proverbial faces turn blue. But nothing is ever going to erase the fact that Teddy The K may have indeed gotten away with cold blooded murder while in this life.

Notice I say “while in this life”. He is now in the next, and over there, the rules are notably different, and justice is final.

Actually the “pi$$”, as you put it (I assume the “$$” are to honor the Kennedy fortune), is a necessary ingredient in this stew. It balances out the rose petals of adoration that the Left is stirring in. Really.

When someone on the Right dies, and Christians call for “restraint”…they are accused of wanting to “STIFLE FREE SPEECH!” Apparently the rules of the game are:
(1) When a major Leftist dies, Conservatives must shut up because they tend to be more Christian…and the Left is free to CANNONIZE the Leftist!
(2) When a major Conservative, Conservatives must not attempt to ask for restraint, lest they be accused of “whitewashing the truth!”…and the Left is free to DEMONIZE the Conservative!

I don’t think I’ll play.

You could see it coming a mile away. Why take responsibility for something when you can be the victim yourself?

PleasepleasePLEASE let them name this health care bill after Ted! I could have a flippin’ FIELD DAY with the iconography!!!

I might be persuaded to look more at this death care if they name it after Kennedy. Just show me proof that he went to any socialist country to get treatment that has government run health care. Just one bit of proof. They say he wanted government run health care, prove it.
