US snubbing Poland for 70th anniversary of WWII?; Update: Former SecDef Perry attending?
posted at 6:40 pm on August 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
In less than a week, Poland will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the beginning of World War II. On September 1st, 1939, Germany launched a war that killed tens of millions of people after concocting a false provocation on the Polish border, with the Soviet Union invading from the other direction. The Polish nation all but disappeared for several years, and for decades after the end of the war, Poland had to live with the war’s Iron Curtain legacy. For many reasons, September 1st will be a day of somber reflection for Poland and eastern Europe.
Poland plans a remembrance ceremony in Gdansk, and the list of attendees makes this a high-profile diplomatic event, according to Polish broadcaster TVN News:
Poland will celebrate 70th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the WW2. Russian PM Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Lithuanian PM Andrius Kubilius, Finish PM Matti Vanhanen, Latvian PM Valdis Dombrovskis, Dutch PM Jan Peter Balkenende, Czech PM Jan Fischer, Estonian PM Andrus Ansip, Serbian PM Mirko Cvetkovic, Hungarian PM Gordon Bajnaj and Albanian PM Sali Berisha and also President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso confirmed his participation in the celebrations that shall take place on September 1st in Gdansk.
Events will start the day before with the special train the Solidarnosć Express visiting WW2 city battlegrounds. The ceremony proper begins at 4.45 in the morning, 70 years to the minute after the battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Westerplatte base. The most important people will attending in this commemoration ceremony, also veterans who will pay tribute to the defenders of Polish coast. At 15.00 Putin, Merkel and other bigwigs will pay their respects to the victims of war. Then the musicians of the Baltic Philharmonic will perform Britten’s “War Requiem”.
A few nations appear to have been left off of the list – including France and the UK, which had guaranteed Poland’s security but failed to initiate military action against the Germans until the invasion of France. Also missing is any mention of a representative from the US, despite American efforts to build a robust alliance and friendship with the Poles since their liberation from Soviet domination. Polonia News, a blog out of Poland with both English and Polish language versions, claims that the “snub” has Poles angry:
It is five days before the commemoration ceremony of the 70th anniversary, September 1st, of the outbreak of World War II in Poland and Washington has not yet announced who is going to represent the US administration.
Polish officials had been led to believe the US would be represented by Vice-President Joe Biden or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. But Prime Minister Donald Tusk seems to have lost all hope that the Obama administration will be sending a high-level official to the ceremony. The ceremony will be attended by Chancellor Merkel, Prime Minister Putin and heads of 12 other states.
Many Polish officials are astonished and see it as a snub but don’t say it out loud. Here are some of comments voiced recently: “I would not attach a great importance to the fact that one country will not be represented by a member of the current administration.” “There is a very long way from Washington to Poland.”
In a later post, the authors claim that the snub will endanger US-Polish relations:
The commentators think that this may be Obama’s reaction to recent open letter from Eastern Europe, signed by former officials from that region, as well as critique of runaway spending in the face of huge budget deficit. Europe, specifically Eastern Europe, took different route and decided to cut spending. And it worked.
Polish politicians and commentators noticed that Hillary Clinton has spent 11 days in Africa, while Polish soldiers die or get wounded in Afghanistan, but can’t spare a day to show a face for this important day for Poles. Just last week Polish government decided to spend nearly 300 million dollars on equipment for troops in that country. In Poland it is a lot of money.
Major Polish newspapers ask what else Poland can do for America? How many more officers should die in Afghanistan? How many more F-16s should they buy? Do they, Obama and Clinton, understand that US is about to commit another blunder?
There is no mention at all in the US media about the anniversary ceremonies in Gdansk, and not much in the European media, either. Any event that has that kind of guest list has to be a significant diplomatic event. Yet, the website for US embassy in Warsaw doesn’t mention it. It does have an entry noting the Congressional recognition of the invasion’s anniversary, but doesn’t mention any involvement in the anniversary’s remembrance in Gdansk, or that Poland will commemorate it at all.
It’s possible that the US, France, and UK simply weren’t invited, and that Poland wanted to make it an eastern European event, and that Polonia News has its information wrong. It does seem odd that the Western allies are not sending any high-ranking representatives, though, especially since we have worked hard to keep Poland politically oriented Westward rather than Eastward.
I have sent several requests to the White House and one to the State Department asking for clarification. The State Department refused to answer the question, leaving me a message that the White House would have to address this. I called the White House twice and e-mailed three people in the administration over the last two days, and got nowhere; everyone seems to be on vacation. When I hear from someone, I will update the post.
Update: According to Hot Air commenter Year of the Dingo, who’s living and posting in Poland (I checked the IP address), the US does have a representative … from the Clinton administration:
I happen to be living in Poland right now. One of the leading newspapers, Rzeczpospolita, is saying that William Perry will appear at Westerplatte at Gdansk. Polish commentators are saying, WTF?, he’s not even in any office.
I still remember watching the 60 anniversary of the Warsaw uprising back in 2004. The Polish people very much appreciated the appearance of Colin Powell at the ceremony.
Perry was last an official of the US in January 1997, more than twelve years ago. If that’s the best effort that the Obama administration can make, small wonder the State Department refused to comment.

Not privy to their war planning but I imagine they all game for scenarios in which the cavalry doesn’t arrive.
Although the Ukraine is strategically significant for many European states and their allies (Georgia is rather less so and rather less defensible), NATO isn’t under any obligation to defend either state as they are not members.
Poland is another story.
Grunchy Cranola on August 27, 2009 at 8:21 PM
Immediately following the invasion of Poland, there was a period of time, between there and the invasion of France, that was called the Phony War. People said they were at war, to fulfill their treaty obligations, but they weren’t actually fighting. The war actually began with the invasion of France. Perhaps that’s why the British and French aren’t there, because they certainly weren’t there for a long time after September 1st.
The United States, on the other hand, should send a representative to this. Most of the Poles remember Ronald Reagan and his famous, “Mr. Gorbechev, tear down this wall.” which they consider a prelude to the freedom they have now. Perhaps that’s why we’re not sending a high level official over there, Obama doesn’t want to be associated with Ronald Reagan.

What? You mean cutting government spending and easing the tax burden during a deep recession instead of taxing more, borrowing more, and feeding your socialist best buds with billions while taking over private industries works?
The eastern europeans were the kenesians, and we are supposed to be playing the role of capitalists here…..
who got the scripts mixed up? I want my ticket refunded!

Yes, you are right, but in a way, that’s my main point. Poland is always another story. It’s geography is it’s destiny, like the rest of us.
JiangxiDad on August 27, 2009 at 8:24 PM
It’s geography is it’s destiny, like the rest of us.
To some extent. On the other hand, Poland’s pphysical geography isn’t much different from the North German Plain. Without the grim political climate of the Phony War or the Cold War, the military relevance of the topography of the Low Countries or the Fulda Gap fades.
Grunchy Cranola on August 27, 2009 at 8:39 PM
I never imagined that the United States, as a matter of official policy, would be on the Soviet side of the Ribbentrop-Molotov treaty.
From Reagan in Berlin to this…?
Smart diplomacy? No. Stupidity, completely.

I can’t get really upset about this. We can’t insist that our leaders jet off to every little country in the world that commemorates some big event. Even if it’s an important historical event, there are only 365 days in a year and we just can’t make it to all of them.
Besides, unlike England, France, Russia, and Germany, we don’t have any kind of guilt complex that obligates us to make the pilgrimage to Poland.
joe_doufu on August 27, 2009 at 8:44 PM
William Perry? The SecDef who essentially told the newly free Baltic States early in the Clinton Administration that they were not good enough to join NATO?

Can someone please tell me why we keep snubbing our allies while snuggling up with our enemies? What is going on here?

Why should the US send someone? If it wasn’t for Pearl Harbor the US would have never entered WWII.
The US stood by and let Hitler and the Nazis ravage Europe for how long?
I’m not being ungrateful, the US saved Australia during WWII.

Why would Obama support Poland, after the fall of Communism, they went the other way. Our Fascist in chief obviously hates democracy.
To our brothers in Poland, be patient, we don’t like them any more than you do. They are trying to bring to us what you overcame. Stick with us, America is now awake. I, for one, thank you for your support, I will stand beside you anytime, I’m sure our guys in green do as well.

Drawing attention to that event will merely emphasize the similarities between Nazism and Obama’s socialistic powergrab.

Get over it, Poland. Our dear leader has a lot on his plate right now. He’s gotta get this health care thing passed, Teddy dies on him, this debt thing is getting outta hand, he’s losing points in the polls and Rahm’s brother is scaring all the old folks. WTF, get off his back.

For you Revolutionary War history buffs, don’t forget that two great Polish patriots Kazimierz Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko were great allies of the Americans, and Pulaski died here in America fighting for our freedom.

At the Tax Day Tea Party, while I was talking with Kevin Price, this gentleman from Poland came up to us. He began speaking with Mr. Price as well. I told the gentleman that I remember the Soviet oppression of Poland in the early 80s. He told me he was there.
But, about our current situation here in AmeriKKKa, he told me, “Just remember. It will get better”.
How Barack HUSSEIN Obama could snub the Pols is a disgrace. This
administrationregime is no longer a laughing matter. It needs to be brought down, by we, the people.

Obama is existentially liberal and he sees “equality” as the ultimate goal, both domestically, and internationally.
His policies, therefore, on both a domestic and international level are designed to weaken America – and our allies – , and by comparison, strengthen our competitors.
Policies toward allies such as Poland, Britain, Australia, etc. follow suit. This is why he “sucks up” to adversaries and “disses” allies.
aquaviva on August 28, 2009 at 12:41 AM
we won’t send anyone, nor have them over for hotdogs at our embassies to celebrate anything, unless they are ruled by tyrants.
photoboy74 on August 28, 2009 at 1:22 AM
Sorry, this commemorates something that gives the U.S.A. glory, World War II, and not a reason to apologize for our existence. Thus, the Obama administration doesn’t want to acknowledge it.
They only acknowledge our (as perceived by them) mistakes. They won’t admit that the U.S. is great or that it has ever done anything worth honor or remembrance.
This is all because The Democrats don’t want to remind voters of exactly how far away from it’s height of glory, might and power, that they, The Democrats, have taken this country.

Poland suffered horrendously and fought the axis and soviets bitterly. In Iraq Poland came though for us and sent a whole division. 1 out of every 8 German planes shot down in the Battle of Britain was down by polish pilots who kept p the fight. This is an outrage, plain and simple.
rob verdi on August 28, 2009 at 5:42 AM
Poland is more then World War II. It is a symbol the liberated nation of Eastern Europe who adored and wished to Emulate the United States. These are ideas Obama and his ilk, who have made a career demeaning this country cannot grasp. To show respect for Poland, a country which has a higher opinion of America then the left in America is simply too much for them.

The F…..g Russians slaughtered the Polish office corps when they took over their share of Poland after the Germans invaded, and the Russians are sending ex KGB man Prime Minister Putin. Others are sending heads of States and we send someone from a previous administration.
Is Mr.Vice not available?

Perhaps, just perhaps, the scene of this anniversary Gdansk is like holding up a crucifix to a vampire. No other city in Europe may be more of a nightmare to someone like Obama and his friends than Gdansk.
Gdansk was the scene in 1980 of Solidarność, the first NON-COMMUNIST workers trade union in the ship yard there.
If you remember it was lead by Lech Wałęsa.
That trade union was anti-government and was the catylist for the anti-Communist movement in Poland which was the pre-cursor to the Reagan tear down this wall speech, and the eventual fall of Obama and his groups beloved Communist Party in Soviet Union

Umm…
1941
10 April: U. S. destroyer DD-424 USS Niblack depth charges a German U-boat while rescuing survivors from a torpedoed Dutch freighter in the North Atlantic. This is the first attack by a U. S. Navy ship on an Axis ship in WWII.
21 May: U. S. freighter SS Robin Moor is sunk by U-69 in the south Atlantic, becoming the first American merchant ship to be sunk in WWII.
4 September: DD-145 USS Greer is attacked by U-652 while escorting a British convoy in the North Atlantic. No damage is sustained. This is the first Axis attack on a U. S. warship in WWII.
17 October: U-568 torpedoes DD-432 USS Kearny, killing 11 men. They are the first U. S. Navy casualties of WWII. Kearny makes it to Iceland for repair.
31 October: DD-245 USS Reuben James is sunk by U-562 south of Iceland, becoming the first U. S. Navy warship destroyed by the Axis in WWII.
6 November: U.S. cruiser CL-4 USS Omaha and a destroyer sieze the German blockade runner Odenwald in the South Atlantic.

As embarrassed as I am about these clowns, I can’t say I am surprised. They campaigned on pulling out of “imperialist mode” that Bush supposedly used. So basically, we are gonna crap on all of our allies, weaken our defense capabilities and ruin our economy. Sounds like a great plan.

First of all, thanks to Ed Morrissey for a mention of my site (PoloniaNews / pl-news.us) and the post. Unfortunately, I didn’t get my facts wrong. Poles did note that Hillary found time for a long stay in Africa. They are pissed off because just last week they had more casualties in Afghanistan. They also begin to think that Obama has some kind of quiet deal with Putin, and would like to ask about it. Not sending any current official allows Obama to avoid those questions.
In last few days Russian propaganda attacks Poland in horrible ways. One of them is an accusation that Poland allied with Hitler to attack Soviet Union. Also, they accuse Poland of war crimes during and after Polish-Soviet war of 1920, which Poland won.
When it comes to Ukraine, this time Poland will help this country with or without NATO (or US). Poles feel bad that they could not help their brothers (sometimes literally) in 1920s.

This administration, the One and all his sycophants, are so embarrassing to the American people. I cannot begin to express my continued astonishment at the lack of dignity, class, knowledge of any kind of historical background, and the resulting mind boggling levels of ineptitude they show on the international stage.
To the Western World: We, the American People, apologize for our Dear Leader’s shameful lack of class.
To Poland in particular: We Americans, extend our respect and apologize for the One’s inability to pay honor to your history in any even remotely reasonable way. Please know that many of us will stand with you in spirit on that 70th Anniversary, remembering your history, your fight, what you suffered, and most especially, what you were able to overthrow and overcome. We honor those memories, and a grateful at the opportunity to stand with you in remembrance of those who fought so long ago, to preserve our way of life.
Perhaps, at the bottom of it, that is the problem. Obama cannot understand our way of life, or those of us who would fight to keep it. Instead, he feels he must apologize for it. He makes me ill, and hasn’t even served a year out yet. How am I to last through the remainder of this idiot’s term without my head exploding?!
