Oh my: Obama hits 50% job approval in Gallup

posted at 3:38 pm on August 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Alternate headline: “Time for the daily ‘Obama’s polling hits new low’ post.” Watching his numbers crater as the ObamaCare debacle drags on reminds me of the end of “The Last Crusade,” where Indy can’t resist reaching for the grail even though he’s about to fall into the crevasse. The One needs a kindly father figure, preferably with a brogue of some sort, to look him in the eye and say, “Indiana? Let it go.”

Teddy could have been that father figure. Ah well. Context from the LA Times:

Should the slide continue, Obama will by no means be the first president to slide below 50% in the Gallup Poll, which has been tracking public approval of presidents since Harry S. Truman.

But Obama has reached his new low more quickly than most of his predecessors did, according to Gallup. The percentage of people voicing disapproval for the job the president is performing also stands at a near-high of 43%.

Slipping below 50% before November of the first year in office would represent “the third-fastest drop” since World War II, Gallup reports. Republican Gerald Ford slipped below 50% in his third month as president, Democrat Bill Clinton during his fourth month.

It took Republican President Eisenhower five years to fall below 50% in the public’s eye, Gallup notes. It took both Republican George Bushes about three years. It took Democrat Lyndon Johnson and Republican Richard Nixon more than two years.

Rasmussen’s got him at 50 percent today, too. Exit question: How much of a bounce will The One get from the “Do it for Teddy!” push on health care? He’s delivering one of the eulogies at Friday’s ubiquitously televised memorial service so he’s bound to pick up some residual goodwill points. But enough to rebound on ObamaCare? Democrat Mary Landrieu told a crowd at lunch yesterday — after the news about Kennedy had broken — that she probably won’t vote for a public option. If Camelot can’t get the Blue Dogs to hedge on the very day of Kennedy’s passing, how much influence will it have really?

Outside of Massachusetts and Capitol Hill, the Kennedy’s have absolutely no political clout.

The Ugly American on August 27, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Not true.

Many parts of the country still worship the Kennedy Boys.

California….and?

I think I read somewhere that these polls also have a heavier concentration of democrats in them than are reflected in the generic “who will you vote for in congress next year” poll results, so my question is, is he REALLY as high as 50%? I doubt it.

karenhasfreedom on August 27, 2009 at 10:45 PM

The people who worship JFK are his peers, and the greatest generation is loosing folks everyday, I heard 1,800 a day. None of them would recognize the Democrat Party today. Because it isn’t the Democrat Party anymore it’s the Progressive Party. Of course those are the same people probably using medicare today…so I am guessing Teddy dying is going to turn into a wash.

Dr Evil on August 27, 2009 at 11:15 PM

Unless Teddy won on American Idol, the kids probably know his brother used to be President….well if they went to private school and not the public school system….otherwise he is named after a band some of them heard of Dead Kennedys

Dr Evil on August 27, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Oh. Is that why they call him ZERO?

Turds only float for so long, then they sink to the bottom of the sea.

How does a man who was confirmed by the Pope but who backed ‘reproductive rights’ for women and who bashed Robert Bork with talk of ‘back alley abortions’ rate a Catholic requim mass?

DrW on August 27, 2009 at 4:01 PM

Huge amounts of money. Obviously.

Of Course with the submersible SS Obama,
we’re hoping: his dives equal ’1′ less than his surfaces!

Old Comrades:

Will any media outlet note that The One and Senator Kennedy never really worked together? The One spent less time in the Senate than He did respecting our troops last Memorial Day.

The ignorant:

Most of the public has no idea about the sick nature of this bunch of ‘leaders’. They read newspapers and watch the three networks. If MM had a major network and its viewers instead of us, His approval would sail below 20. Guaranteed.

Exit question: How much of a bounce will The One get from the “Do it for Teddy!” push on health care?

They will get a lot of bouncing around the cable channels as the MSM rushes to saturate the air with Camelot schtick.

Young people I meet don’t know the guy at all. The older ones who remember the era are the ones getting shafted on Healthcare

There are too many celebs currently and few are adored. That includes Obama except with the hard core. The economy has people soured on lovable rich celebrities, especially politicians perceived to be helping their rich buddies while letting the taxpayer hang by the thumb

Evidently, this news gave him a headache and now he;s got to take another week’s vacation.

kingsjester on August 28, 2009 at 6:15 AM

Only about half the American public voted for him to begin with so why is the fact that only half agree with him now even news?

jmckeone on August 28, 2009 at 8:31 AM

It doesn’t matter. Obama will never recover politically. Once you lose trust, you lose everything and that was lost when, after 6 months of a promise that the stimulus plan would help with creating jobs, it failed.

The only thing we can hope for is a tidal wave of conservatives to be elected in 2010 to begin to reverse the damage done.

Bingo! In a way, that’s exactly what “saved” Bill Clinton. He needed adult supervision with a R Congress.

It takes a village to build a tribe; Obama’s finding out his tribe is going AWOL!

Cybergeezer on August 28, 2009 at 8:45 AM

Good News! Obama’s popularity plummeting at a REDUCED PACE! (Somebody’s playing with the numbers.)

Cybergeezer on August 28, 2009 at 9:09 AM

He is a national DISGRACE

bluegrass on August 28, 2009 at 9:26 AM

Right. If the pollsters admit to 50%, it’s more likely 45% or lower.

anniekc on August 28, 2009 at 9:31 AM

Don’t believe any poll. It’s really in the mid 40′s and sinking.

a) eat a waffle
b) take a vacation
c) get a puppy
d) be perfectly clear

ted c on August 28, 2009 at 10:29 AM

Unemployment ain’t 9.4% it’s really 16-20%

His approval ain’t 50%, it’s really 40-42%

remember, we have to use MSM correction factors with any of his numbers.
Good news for Obama: take off 10%
Bad news for obama: add 10-12%
Economic forecasts: add 2 trillion
Budget neutral= lotsa dead grannies and plugs pulled (just not Joe’s)

ted c on August 28, 2009 at 10:32 AM

It takes a village to build an tribe idiot; Obama’s finding out his tribe is going AWOL sure trained him well.

FIFY

Unlike the liberal cities, us rural Californians are regular people, and most of us figured out the Socialism thing either before the election or soon after.

He’s tanking as more people figure out he’s a socialist. Somebody above said something about trust, which was on target. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. His whole campaign was a lie. How long does it take to trust a liar again, after you catch him at it? Particularly over something important? Obama doesn’t have that long.
