Guess who has a missile defense system?

posted at 2:57 pm on August 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Bush administration argued for increasing investment in missile defense systems to combat two growing threats — Iran and North Korea.  Barack Obama attacked this policy during the presidential campaign, and has offered to retreat on missile defense in Europe in exchange for Russian concessions on Iran, among other issues.  But Russia’s opposition to missile defense in Europe doesn’t appear to be matched by their increasing fear over North Korea’s missile development  — and its lousy aim:

Russia has deployed a missile defence system near its border with North Korea and is studying other measures to protect its population from stray missiles, Russia’s top general said on Wednesday. …

A series of missile launches and a nuclear weapon test by North Korea this year alarmed its neighbours, including South Korea, China and Japan.

“We are definitely concerned by the conditions under which tests are being carried out in North Korea, including nuclear devices,” the chief of Russia’s general staff Nikolai Makarov told journalists in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.

The US expressed alarm over Pyongyang’s missile activities as well, especially when they launched a long-range missile over Japan.  We had the opportunity to test our system in April, as the Taepodong-2 launch preparation was public and obvious.  Instead, we left our best and most expensive missile-tracking radar tied to the dock in Pearl Harbor.

The Russians have taken a more clear-eyed view of the threat from Kim Jong-Il, and not just the threat of aggression.  These missile launches usually fail, especially the longer-range rockets, and that creates a whole new level of threat for North Korea’s neighbors.  They want to knock down anything that goes astray before it hits Russian territory and lots of Russians — just the concern we should have for our allies in South Korea and Japan.

pseudonominus on August 27, 2009 at 3:21 PM

I have a completely different take on this, based on my lifelong belief that you can never trust a Ruskie.

To date the Norks have barely been able to launch a long range missile and hit the Pacific Ocean with any accuracy. Considering the Norks have been getting help with their missile development from the Iranians, one can conclude the Russians know the capabilities of those weapons and hardly feel threatened (maybe even supplied some of them).

But who better to use as an excuse to test and develop missile defense technology than the Norks?

Surely the Russians are testing their technology, but I think in the long run any missile defense technology will be used to defend incoming missiles from NATO or the US, who already have the wherewithall to strike inside Russia.

Seems like the Russians are ready to repeat history, if they intend to fund a massive missile defense system. Last time they bet the house on military spending and dropped most domestic spending, the Soviet Union collapsed from within.

Only yesterday I heard Putin say they needed to shore up their road and bridge infrastructure that is sorely in need of repair. Now he’s going to spend on missile defense. Go figure.

fogw on August 27, 2009 at 3:21 PM

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Obama’s breaking up NASA and our military, simultaneously, enhancing Russia’s space and missile options.

Obama/Soros has succeeded in transforming the DHS from its established purpose into an unchecked espionage force against American citizens. He has also reignited what used to be professional jealousies into a raging bonfire between the CIA and the FBI in order to meddle himself into their micromanager. Does Obama disdain Napolitano with the same contempt that he has for Hillary, that he would feel the need to micromanage DHS? He knows he’s incompetent, so he appoints czars to oversee the Director of this and the Secretary of that. Such debt. So many favors to repay.

Eric Holder himself has a conflict of interests and should not be the Director of the Department of Justice. His law firm defended and is yet defending the 9/11 Terrorists. Holder is prosecuting the government instead of the terrorists. Assbackwards, and so long as he’s in office, he’ll go all the way. And so long as Obama is not impeached, Holder stays put, preventing/impeding any impeachment procedure.

Pelosi has made her position clear, to destroy the CIA.

Overlooked Nugget: IG Report Confirms Nancy Pelosi Did in Fact Lie About Not Being Briefed on EITs
—Ace

The IG report belies House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s claims that she wasn’t told about all this. “In the fall of 2002, the Agency briefed the leadership of the Congressional Intelligence Oversight Committees on the use of both standard techniques and EITs. . . . Representatives . . . continued to brief the leadership of the Intelligence Oversight Committees on the use of EITs and detentions in February and March 2003. The [CIA] General Counsel says that none of the participants expressed any concern about the techniques or the Program . . . .” Ditto in September 2003.–Jennifer Rubin, “In Case You Had Any Doubts,” Commentary

“The Real CIA News,” WSJ

The two CIA papers don’t discuss enhanced interrogation, though the IG report suggests that KSM provided little of this information prior to his waterboarding. Some will argue that these details could have been elicited without enhanced techniques. We’ll never know. The question is whether Attorney General Eric Holder and his new special counsel intend to second-guess the decisions of CIA officials who were operating in the shadow of 9/11 and who, we now know, successfully unraveled terror plots and saved lives.
***

Which brings us to another salient part of the IG report: CIA officials well understood that they might be second-guessed years later by politicians. “During the course of this review, a number of Agency officers expressed unsolicited concern about the possibility of recrimination or legal action resulting from their participation. . . . officers expressed concern that a human rights group might pursue them for activities . . . they feared that the Agency would not stand behind them.” Another said, “Ten years from now we’re going to be sorry we’re doing this . . . [but] it has to be done.”

The outrage here isn’t that government officials used sometimes rough interrogation methods to break our enemies. The outrage is that, years later, when the political winds have shifted and there hasn’t been another attack, our politicians would punish the men and women who did their best to protect Americans in a time of peril.

Anyone can see that GITMO serves a specific need, and that our current prison system stateside is already overloaded, prisoners rioting, judges demanding that convicted felons be released prior to serving sentences, regardless of parole protocol, in order to lower prison population by 20+%.

And the Secret Service have made their position clear; it is the Department of Homeland Security that is enhancing the threats upon this presidential administration, not the Secret Service’s fault. They claim that the DHS follows the desires of politicians against the advice of traditional safety protocol.

Never to waste the opportunity that any crisis creates, what a convenient cover Teddy’s final services will provide the gathering power mongers with whom Emanuel privately arranges meetings.

National defense, Ramadan, and 9/11. Now we hear of Obama’s plot to assault Israel at the UN.

I cannot agree more with the comments on this post. We need to develop and deploy more anti-missile defense systems: Alaska, Hawaii, and elsewhere.

However:

we left our best and most expensive missile-tracking radar tied to the dock in Pearl Harbor.

We frequently leave our high end stuff out of sight. It’s one way that our opponents (and allies for that matter) can gather intell on our capabilities. It’s one of the best ways for us to gather intell on our adversaries. Make a move, then watch them react, and see what they can do.

Seems the Russians threaten us if we defend ourselves, the Russians threaten Israel for trying to defend themselves and Obama votes present.

ATTN all haters of the USA…..

Idiots in the USA have elected a self idolizing racist, who is busy creating czar positions for his Black radical friends and going on trips to apologize for the USA. The time is now to prepare the attack on their allies, and on them. If we sit back and wait, these elected officials will do the job for us, but why wait since they are giving us the green light to move now?

Update: Clown they elected president has declared war on terror over. ROFOL, Allah be praised.

So we are unable to use tools to defend ourselves because of the tool in the White House?

Super.

Smart power has been replaced by jackass power.

So you want to spend a huge chunk of money to fund military contractors so they can develop an unreliable way to protect Japanese and South Korean people from a threat that they’ll probably never face.

But you wont spend money to help Americans who absolutely, regularly face the threat of going broke due to our poor system of healthcare.

Defense contractors > poor people.

Nice priorities!

It should come as no surprise at all. The statists honestly believe that by appearing weak and defenseless that our enemies and the opportunists of the world will no longer hate us… because they do not fear us. They honestly believe that protecting our interests and our allies is an aggressive behavior that encourages foreign governments and Mohammedans to hate us and act on that hate.

It is only natural that these willfully ignorant statists would seek to limit or dismantle our military and defense capabilities… After all, what better way to make the world love us than for us all to buried under the same oppressive tyranny that they are.

Regards,
Max

Russia has deployed a missile defence system near its border with North Korea and is studying other measures to protect its population from stray missiles, Russia’s top general said on Wednesday. …

Cheese-N-Rice.

They are SHOOTING missiles toward us, and we won’t defend ourselves, but Russia is worried about getting hit with a stray?
