DoJ drops investigation of Richardson

posted at 10:55 am on August 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What do Bill Richardson and the New Black Panther Party have in common?  Both got let off the hook by Attorney General Eric Holder and the Obama Department of Justice.  Holder, who recently announced a push to investigate and potentially prosecute CIA interrogators, will not prosecute the governor of New Mexico for his pay-for-play activities, which scotched his nomination for Secretary of Commerce:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and former high-ranking members of his administration won’t be criminally charged in a yearlong federal investigation into pay-to-play allegations involving one of the Democratic governor’s large political donors, someone familiar with the case said.

The decision not to pursue indictments was made by top Justice Department officials, according to a person familiar with the investigation, who asked not to be identified because federal officials had not disclosed results of the probe.

“It’s over. There’s nothing. It was killed in Washington,” the person told The Associated Press.

This marks the second time the DoJ has killed a prosecution for political allies of the administration.  This time, though, the connection is a lot more explicit.  Richardson was connected to Obama well enough to get a Cabinet appointment in the transition, later having to decline because of the federal probe into corruption in his administration in New Mexico.

And what were those pay-for-play problems?  Michelle reported them in her book Culture of Corruption, now at the top of the New York Times best-seller list for a fourth consecutive week:

The White House transition team knew about the pay-to-play scandal involving a California company, CDR Financial Products, well before Obama unwisely fêted Richardson’s ability to show “how government can act as a partner to support our businesses.” FBI and federal prosecutors launched their probe of CDR’s activities in New Mexico in the summer of 2008.

The feds had been digging into a nationwide web of favor-trading between financial firms and politicians overseeing local government bond markets. CDR was tied to a doomed bond deal in Alabama which, according to Bloomberg News, threatened to cause the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. CDR raked in nearly $1.5 million in fees from a New Mexico state financial agency after donating more than $100,000 to Richardson’s efforts to register Hispanic and American Indian voters and to pay for expenses at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, the news service reported. The state agency that awarded the money consisted of five Richardson appointees and five members of his gubernatorial cabinet. CDR made contributions both shortly before and after securing consultant work with the state of New Mexico. CDR’s president also contributed $29,000 to Obama’s presidential campaign.

Apparently, the Obama administration and the Holder DoJ condone this activity, while pursuing the people who keep America safe from attack.  It’s an interesting set of priorities, and unfortunately not much of a surprise.

So when do we get to hear protestations from House and Senate Democrats over the politicization of the DoJ? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Well you can’t rightly prosecute someone who is working as an adjunct diplomat for your administration a la Bill Clinton now can you?

Bill Richardson Hosting North Korean Diplomats 8/19/09

In yet another potential sign of warming relations between the United States and North Korea, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will host two of Kim Jong Il’s top diplomats in Santa Fe on Wednesday. The meeting with Richardson — who served as a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and who visited North Korea several times during the Clinton presidency — comes at the request of the diplomats, the State Department confirmed.

According to sources, Richardson will be all ears, but won’t be authorized to negotiate. The meeting follows Bill Clinton’s successful visit to Pyongyang, during which the former president secured the release of two imprisoned American journalists. Yesterday, Cinton briefed President Obama on his observations from the trip.

The specific request for Richardson has many observers hopeful that North Korea will actually have something of import to discuss, perhaps even about the possibility of scaling back its nuclear weapons program.

Actual quote from an Amazon.com review of Michelle’s book:

….As far as I can tell from skimming through the book, there is little in the way of actual fact, other than a snippet here and there, it is entirely made up of whole cloth. However, that has yet to stop Malkin from disgorging reams of trumped up misinformation from someplace other than factual sources.
I am not a “lib” but I certainly can identify ignorant and racially biased writing when I read it. (Caucasian 100% here!)
I may not be an “intellectual” but I am certainly intelligent and have read extensively all of my seventy years.
( I have also studied English Grammer that appears to be a subject that some reviewers missed somewhere along the line.)
Frankly, all I see in this diatribe of hate is abject fear of some great unknown “government” takeover of everything.
I have no problem in standing up at town meetings and reminding people that the “government” is US, that is, WE, not the faceless THEY that seems to be the bogey man about which the far right is so incensed.

Many of the so-called “facts” put forth in this book are easily checked and the conclusions stated by Malkin are also easily disproved.
It is a pity that she has to champion a cause that is inherently wrong-headed and, to the true and dedicated real patriots, utterly disgusting.

Wile E. Statist…. SUPER Genius. Barf.

Wait… tell me you guys aren’t surprised by this? After all, the Richardson administration in New Mexico has got to be a primer for all corrupt state governments nationwide!

His former Secretary of State has been indicted on umpteen counts of money laundering, etc., from a “voter education program.”

And one of the things the ObamaZombies have been trying to get Karl Rove with was his passing on of information regarding the New Mexico Attorney General’s failure to look into possible voter fraud which has been said to be so bad both sides AND the local paper were BEGGING for an investigation.

Hell, down here in my teeny neck o’ the woods, we had folks outside every frigging big store in town signing up voters in 2008 and I guarantee based on what I overheard, they were NOT concerned about citizenship, voter eligibility or anything else. Hell, they were giving out free ICE CREAM trying to drag in voters. They did not like the fact that our county is conservative (Bush came here twice!) and we continue to pay for it to this day.

Richardson raided the Permanent Education Fund claiming our schools needed the money, yet, for some reason, we’ve got schools here in our town that are falling apart. Our district is cutting back services and scrambling trying to figure out how to handle the short fall. When El Gordo aka Gov. Richardson took office there was a SURPLUS in that fund, now statewide there’s not enough money to go around.

New Mexico today looks like Huey Long’s Louisiana and would make even the Daley years in Chicago look tame at times. While he flies around in a special plane and has meals prepared by special chefs for his visits from foreign dignitaries, the people of New Mexico hang on by the skin of their teeth.

CDR and the Democrats

The withdrawal of Bill Richardson recently made the headlines. In his case CDR gave money to Si SE Puede, a PAC formed to help pay Richardson’s expenses at the 2004 Democratic Convention. In exchange its argued that CDR received favorable treatment in regards to bids to do business for GRIP (Govenor Richardson’s Investment program) , bid rigging in short.

Another aspect of pay for play, and one more likely to land a politician in jail is CDR’s tactic of finding friends, fundraisers and associates of elected Democrats, and hiring them as “Consultants”. In New Mexico it was Richardson friend Mike Stratton who was hired by CDR. On a side note the Director of Si Se Puede Fred Duval was hired by UBS ,a Swiss bank, as a consultant. UBS was also one of several banks that ended up receiving a cut of the GRIP pie. The collusion of CDR, elected Democrat, and consultants that occurred in New Mexico is similar to other CDR linked scandals. In Philadelphia it was Ron White (now deceased) who received money and super bowl tickets from the company and was hired as a consultant. He was also an associate and fundraiser for Philly Mayor Sharpe. In Pennsylvania as a whole it was Alan Kessler who was the chief lobbyist for CDR and a top fundraiser for Ed Rendell. The most egregious example would be Mayor Larry Langford of Birmingham Alabama, who is accused in a 101 count indictment of using his friend William Blount and lobbyist Albert LaPierre to funnel money, jewelry, cloths, and watches into his hands in exchange for government favors while he was President of the Jefferson County Commission. Jefferson County, which includes Birmingham is on the precipice of the greatest municipal bankruptcy in history. There are also questions of CDR’s actions in Atlanta and several of municipalities and CDR is currently being sued by over 20 school districts and cities in addition to the criminal investigations.

Donations to Democrats
Over the past 16 years David Rubin, President of CDR, has managed to funnel 279,000 dollars to various candidates across the country. In total 95% of that money went to Democrats. Of those Democrats, Obama, Clinton, Ken Salazar, and Henry Waxman were some of the top beneficiaries. In addition he has spread 91,000 dollars to Democrats on a state and local level, with Ed Rendell, Governor of Pennsylvania being the top recipient. It should be noted that Rubin was on Rendell’s transition team when he became governor a couple years ago. And where was our former Chairmen for House Oversight and Government Reform Henry Waxman when all of this corruption was going on? Broken Promises exposed CDR in 2006 and the SEC had fined that company in 2007, why no headline grabbing hearings for the country to sick its teeth into? Oh wait CDR in addition to being pouring hundreds of thousands to the Democrats happens to be located in CA-30, that would be Waxman’s own district.

They aren’t even trying to hide the corruption anymore.

It’s sad when Sarah Palin has more cajones than these losers.

TXMomof3 on August 27, 2009 at 11:32 AM

Very. And thank heaven for her. But she can’t do ALL the heavy lifting. We need her for the most important things otherwise even her voice will start to wear thin if she addresses EVERYTHING. (I think she could easily be the next Rush btw, but that’s a blog entry for another day)

The longer the GOP stands by and hides behind her skirt, and the American people’s outrage while themselves remaining silent, the more my fears that if they DO regain control nothing much will change, and that they’ve learned nothing from this time in “exile.”

Steele was on the right track when he started to get mouthy over passing healthcare without R votes, but he and more importantly GOP contenders need to hammer home outrages like this. The RNC needs to run commercials NOW about how the country’s DOJ has no J in it unless you did favors for Obama.

Democrats’ silence is expected.
Republicans’ silence is sickening.

With the current outrage in America right now, there will NEVER be another time for R’s to speak out against such blatant abuses of power – there is literally nothihng to fear by doing so, and so much to gain.

The balls of this administration certainly give new meaning to “yes we can.” Can we get away with Chicago-style corruption on a massive federal scale?

All together now…

YES WE CAN

The GOP has to understand that they need to wake up and start acting like they have a pair. Sitting by and doing nothing is NOT a winning strategy.

Now hold on here…we need to take the advice of our old friend John McCain. Now is the time we can use his leadership and acknowledge this is not about Democrats or Republicans, we need to put down the arguments, apologize, realize that Ogabe and Holder do stand for and respect the constitution. We need to reach out with open arms and roll over on all our principals. Once we realize that the only way conservatism can stand up in the light is if we abandon those principals and fully embrace the ideals and actions of Holder and his corrupt agenda……then my friends and only then have we truly won.

The Jug-eared One is WITHOUT HONOR.

Eric Holder is WITHOUT HONOR.

Chicago on the Potomac indeed.
