Disgrace: State Dept ready to cut off millions in aid to Honduras over “military coup”

posted at 8:20 pm on August 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

This would be the same “coup” that was ordered by the country’s supreme court pursuant to its constitution and carried out with the support of the legislature, including members of Zelaya’s own party. Hillary’s held off on using that terminology until now because by law she’ll have to cut funding to Honduras once the formal assessment is made, but it looks like the moment of truth is at hand. It’s a travesty, but what do you expect? Obama’s hot to prove to the world’s tyrants that, unlike his cowboy predecessor, he’s a man they can do business with. And he’s invested enough political capital in this horrible decision by now — maneuvering to block Zelaya’s ouster before it happened, calling it “illegal” after it did, and slowly turning up the pressure ever since — that he’d lose face if he relented and embraced the new president. So here we are:

U.S. State Department staff have recommended that the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya be declared a “military coup,” a U.S. official said on Thursday, a step that could cut off as much as $150 million in U.S. funding to the impoverished Central American nation.

The official, who spoke on condition he not be named, said State Department staff had made such a recommendation to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has yet to make a decision on the matter although one was likely soon…

Diplomats said that the United States had held off making the formal determination to give diplomacy a chance to yield a negotiated compromise that might allow for Zelaya’s return to power.

Such efforts, however, appear to have failed for now and so the United States is taking steps — including its decision on Tuesday to cease issuing some visas at its embassy in Tegucigalpa — to raise pressure on the de facto government.

I hope The One trots Hillary out to make this announcement instead of doing it himself; that would fit nicely with his buck-passing on Holder’s CIA inquiry. For all the well deserved grief we’ve given him over Iran, nothing he’s said or done about that — yet — approaches the awfulness of his ass-backwards priorities on Honduras. Good work, Barry.

wildcat84 on August 27, 2009 at 8:27 PM

The bottom line on this: Obama wants Honduras to end up like Venezuela with Zelaya sitting on the throne.

When you put this with what Glenn Beck was discussing, it just all points in the same direction of having a communist for a president.

Isn’t anyone curious to know what was in Obama’s ‘missing’ thesis about Soviet Russia?

therightscoop on August 27, 2009 at 8:27 PM

Is the next demand from Obama going to be that Honduras remove all the members of it’s supreme court?

Will Obama demand that the Honduran legislature be replaced immediately?

Will Obama insist that Zelaya be made president for life?

I wonder what long term ‘good’ can come from the threats made by Obama? Is it even remotely possible that the people in Honduras might find Obama anything but a tyrant?

This comes on the heels of Ed’s story about the State dept suspending the visa program for Honduras.

As for that second scumbag, Hillary, making the announcement, she’ll be glad to. She already stood up publicly with Israel’s FM and delivered the reaming to him, and in that case, she had the jewish vote to lose. Here she has the Honduran-American vote to lose. Big deal.

We know what Obama is, and fight him every day. It will be good to see Hillary exposed for what she is if she goes along with this travesty. And it will be good for the typical American-hating lefty world citizens who got the President they wanted. Now they can see the consequences. I wonder who the Hondurans preferred, McCain or Obama?

Setting Honduras adrift in a sea of tinpot dictators ready and willing to destroy it…apparently being on the Soviet side of the Ribbentrop-Molotov treaty and dismissing Poland, insulting Poland (and the recently free Eastern European nations)…working overtime to become friends with dictatorships across the globe…and encouraging thugs and paid-minions to destroy this, our representative republic…along with all the other “antics” of the Obama Administration since January…

If I were an outside neutral observer, I’d get the notion that the United States has almost overnight become some sort of socialist repressive regime.

I fervently hope that the prayers of millions and millions of non-Americans in thousands of towns, villages and cities around the world are being said for our deliverance from this, our least sterling hour.

I firmly believe that Obama will do anything he needs to in order to cause Honduras’ government to fail. If the laws of Honduras can be used to legally oust a President for trying to rig and election and illegally extend his presidency and powers, then that bodes very poorly for his chances to effect the same thing in these United States.

The last thing that Obama wants is for the law to actually have meaning unless it is in support of his personal agenda. Remember that he stated publicly on more than one occasion that he believes the US Constitution to be a “..deeply flawed document”.

JiangxiDad on August 27, 2009 at 8:53 PM

This is despicable. I want you all to know that Obama has just reflated Zelaya and Chavez’s cause.

For the past 3 weeks, Zelaya was relegated to flying from leftist capital to leftist capital begging for attention, while Chavez turned to an increasingly restive domestic situation and an explosive diplomatic crisis with Colombia.

Chavez, Zelaya and their allies were already laying the groundwork in the media to discredit the coming elections so that they can pressure Honduras after the vote. This will just embolden them.

However, If Obama thinks he is going to pressure Honduras he’s got another thing coming. The Honduran people are committed to their democracy and won’t go down without a fight.

This isn’t over despite what Obama wants. FU Barry.

I tried as delicate as I could and it was like too much information. They weren’t expecting what I said and desperately wanted to go back inside their own little bubbles. I ended with saying that they needed to start looking into things themselves.

I know people are waking up,, but I wonder if they are waking up fast enough. My office workers just could not even grasp the thought that Obama wanted to take over our health care. Trying to explain the czars would have blown up their brains.

tarpon on August 27, 2009 at 8:24 PM

I agree. More people should be required to read the full FBI file on Frank Davis (Obama’s “mentor” and “good friend” who he spent many years being tutored by), and more closely examine all the weekly rants by ‘Rev.’ Wright that Obama listened to (he “bought all the tapes and always listened to them” so he said originally — when questioned later, he said he “never heard” any of Wright’s insanity) for decades.

Obama isn’t an American, not in his head, not in his ideals, not in his goals. His grandfather was under investigation by the U.S. military for having sold Navy classified documents to the U.S.S.R. and was very likely a Communist spy (not yet proven but highly suspected when he was alive).

Obama’s not an American, not in his mind, heart, reasoning nor ideals and beliefs. He assumes that the Presidency is an office by which he can take the U.S.A. and “change” it to something more suitable to his head, heart, reasoning and ideals and beliefs, which means, not America.

Bidens “test”?

BO failed.

Links to FBI files on Frank Marshall Davis, Obama’s “mentor” with whom he was instructed on the many ways of being Frank.

Nope. That comes when Putin drives his panzers into the Ukraine.

I apologize to all Hondurans for our current president, for all his czars and minions, and for their beastly wrong-headed policies with regard to your struggle to defend your democracy.

I didn’t vote for him, but I figure since he’s going around the world apologizing for stuff he had no hand in, I have just as much right to apologize for him. He is one sorry excuse for a president. My deepest, sincere apologies. I wish you victory and peace!

Hey man,, we still have about 41 more wonderful months to go!
That’s less than 3 1/2 years. Better than saying 4 more years!
If you look at weeks it’s a little sad,, about 180 weeks or so.
I went with 3 years worth of weeks and then just added 25 more weeks.
Now,, days, it gets big,,, that would be about 1260 glorious days left. Wonderful. Freaking wonderful isn’t it?? That’s over twice as long as those hostages were held in Iran!
But, if you want to look on the bright side, I read somewhere that it takes 20 years for an oak tree to mature. So,, no worries of having to sit around and wait for an oak tree to grow up before Obama goes! Of course,, this is assuming he doesn’t win a 2nd, 3rd or 4th term. And, well, ,,ya know,, if elections will be legal in 2012.

The change is unreal..
Remember when allies were cooperating to better Latin America? CIA / Mossad cooperation with Colombia comes to mind. Now alliances are being shredded – Disgrace is the right world.

I seriously doubt a CIA-Mossad cooperative venture bettered anything other than Israel.

Gimme a break!

Like I said earlier, I just hope Honduras and our other allies can hold out for the next 3 & 1/2 yrs till we get this pos communist administration out.

Nov 2010. Take the House, the rest falls apart. Remember this: He who owns the House, owns the checkbook. It’s a power that has never really been used. Even the Dems, who swore to use it to end the war in Iraq, did not cut the funding.

If (or should I say, when) we take the House in 2010, Barry ends up with no money. He’ll have to borrow cash to provide TP for the White House.
