Dem Congresswoman spreading myths, too?

posted at 4:10 pm on August 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Does Linda Douglass know that Rep. Betsy Markey (D-CO) is spreading malicious myths about ObamaCare?  Has anyone flagged Markey to the White House yet?  The House Democratic caucus may need to be flagged after Markey’s local paper caught her admitting that Medicare benefits would have to be cut — for the greater good:

Some people, including Medicare recipients, will have to give up some current benefits to truly reform the nation’s health-care system, Rep. Betsy Markey told a gathering of constituents in Fort Collins on Wednesday.

Markey has repeatedly said during the August congressional recess that Medicare spending needs to be reined in to help pay for reforming the broader health-care system.

“There’s going to be some people who are going to have to give up some things, honestly, for all of this to work,” Markey said at a Congress on Your Corner event at CSU. “But we have to do this because we’re Americans.”

B-b-b-but President Obama said that was just a myth …..

The thing is rather than just try to cut fraud and abuse and allow for more privatization of the program, they will leave these old people out there with no alternatives. They can get supplemental insurance and they do. I know people who are spending hundreds a month on these plans to go along with the medicare, but it is almost impossible for them to just get regular health insurance anymore. Not at their age.

Christian Conservative on August 27, 2009 at 4:43 PM

If the Democrats are talking cuts in Medicare, which we all know is necessary since the program is, or will be in the next few years, bankrupt, now is the time to offer Medicare reforms. Personally, I would like to go to a fixed subsidy for seasoned citizens to buy health care on the free market. If the GOP offers a plan when we are back in power, the Dems will revert to the mode that we are hurting teh citizens. Now is the time to position medicare on a sustainable path.

I will click my heels together until this happens.

They could get rid of the S-CHIP programs for higher income people. They could make people wait longer to go on the program as well.

People forget that one of the reasons social security was created was to get people out of the work force so that the younger people could get jobs. If people could continue to work longer and if they could get health insurance as they get older, some of these costs could be contained.

Terrye on August 27, 2009 at 4:49 PM

I pay over $1500 a month for various insurance coverages already…and I’m not rich…not even close.

so NOW, in order to keep my private health insurance I will have to pay higher premiums (less people contributing to the plan) and pay higher taxes to cover other people on the public option??

Add the unsustainable national deficit, cap and trade, and the coming tax tsunami to cover these outrages….how exactly am I supposed to do all of this?

How in the hell is any of this going to work? There’s only so much blood in a turnip.

Does anyone else see a national collapse coming?

And, no, I won’t accept an argument from a lib that cutting is okay to provide more for the common good. That’s not the ways have ever worked and to now try changing the story is just crap.

Remember the old argument, “For the price of one B1 bomber we could…” As if there’s a special place where we can make an even trade of national defense for social justice. Any new argument about cuts for the greater good won’t wash; libs made their story and need to stick to it.

I want to hear libs defend this crap about cuts to Medicare. Any of you trolls care to take me up on it?
