Wow: Kennedy didn’t dabble in petty personal attacks, says David Shuster

posted at 6:30 pm on August 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m amused to find myself on Politico’s list of conservatives who couldn’t “hold their fire” on Teddy because I suggested that Democrats just might politicize his memorial service later this week. Laying aside the precedent of the Wellstone memorial, that’s not even an attack on Kennedy, it’s an attack on his colleagues — who are, in fact, already hard at work exploiting his death. The irony, however, is that I did hold my fire: I was planning to link this old Jonah Goldberg piece on TK’s vicious demagoguery of Robert Bork in Headlines but deleted it because I thought it might be a bit too acid for the occasion. After watching Shuster whitewash The Great Man’s record here, though, it’s back on the table. Even David Frum, who remembered Kennedy warmly today for his decency towards Ted Olson, felt compelled to note that he could barely stand the thought of him for 15 years after the Bork hearing, so loathsome was his behavior. I can only assume that this didn’t come out the way Shuster intended it, that what he really meant was, “When Teddy went for the throat, he saved it for important stuff like Supreme Court hearings.” Even MSNBC wouldn’t spin this hard for a lefty. Would it? Click the image to watch.

Laying aside the precedent of the Wellstone memorial, that’s not even an attack on Kennedy, it’s an attack on his colleagues — who are, in fact, already hard at work exploiting his death.

Well that might be somewhat objectionable if Kennedy hadn’t said this at the 2008 DNC…

And this is the cause of my life — new hope that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American — north, south, east, west, young, old — will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.

I’m amused to find myself on Politico’s list of conservatives who couldn’t “hold their fire” on Teddy because I suggested that Democrats just might politicize his memorial service later this week.

Allahpundit, in fairness to Politico, they didn’t mischaracterize what you said as attacking Kennedy. This is what the article says before you’re quoted:

Few – if any – others on the right were willing to attack Kennedy so directly so soon. Instead, they did so indirectly, teeing off against the Democrats who will eulogize Kennedy and the reporters who are covering it all. The fear: The Democrats and their allies in the press will use Kennedy’s death to ram through health care reform.

I think that’s a fair characterization of yours and others’ (accurate and appropriate) commentary.

It *does* seem inappropriate that it’s included in an article titled “Not all Kennedy critics hold fire,” especially when Breitbart seems to be the only one quoted who would fit that bill. And it’s not just a case of a poor headline, because the article also says, “But not every Kennedy foe was ready to forgive and forget.”

Teddy neither dabbled nor was he petty. He meant EVERYTHING he said and did, playing a cutthroat game. He gave us the verb “to bork” after all.

Shuster got it right. He simply refused to give America all the details.

So I bet the same will happen in a few days at TK’s rally memorial.

Janos Hunyadi on August 26, 2009 at 6:42 PM

They may be empty platitudes, but that wasn’t crr6′s point. The point is that Kennedy himself said that enacting universal health care was the cause of his life. Therefore, reminding people of that as he is eulogized is less of an exploitation.

Given that he said that this was the cause of his life (even if that’s an empty platitude), should his eulogies omit this fact?

Yes, it’s still exploitation by both Kennedy himself (since he’s the one who said it) and the Democrats who are bringing it up now, because they are trying to play on people’s sympathies to get a policy enacted. But it’s certainly less of an exploitation if he did in fact see it as the cause of his life.

I hope Teddy’s having a beer now with his paragons of virtue (Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Molotov, Brezhnev, Krushchev, Saddaamn H. (and maybe even Bin Laden). I do wish Teddy’s family comfort and condolences during these times, but I feel his family will get more than Mary Jo’s family ever received from the K gang and their sheeple.

In other news tonight….

A devastating explosion and fire have completely destroyed Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusettes. A new emplyee at the Ralph Kennedy Funeral Parlor and Crematorium is believed to be the initial cause of the catastrophe. It is reported that the tag tied to the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s toe had the notation:

Can’t
Readily
Embalm-
Massive
Alcohol
To
Excess

and was read by the new employee as “CREMATE”. The late Senator’s remains were then loaded into Oven Three and the controls were set to “Incenerate”. The first square mile surrounding “Oven Three” was instantly levelled in the resulting explosion with a massive fire ball and mushroom cloud consuming anything and everything in the area. The resulting gale force winds caused by the mass quantities of oxygen needed to fuel the Senator’s on going inferno are now sucking block after block of buildings into the heart of the fire causing total thermal run away. All roads leading inland are said to be in complete gridlock with terror and panic apparent in the eyes of the many citizens fleeing for their very lives. Several locals were seen carrying “The End Is Near” signs, while local radio stations were said to be playing “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” over and over. Martha’s Vineyard Fire Department spokesperson Jimmy Richards was quoted as saying, “We are now referring to the immediate area surrounding Oven Three as ‘Ground Zero’and currently can not get within five miles of that location. The situation is completely out of control but we do have it on good authority that the Senator should be pretty well consumed in the next 4 to 6 weeks. We’ll attempt to get close enough to get some water on him at that time.” More information will be released as it comes in.
