Videos: Chris Matthews, not politicizing Kennedy’s death

posted at 12:55 pm on August 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We’ve been hearing warnings all day about how conservatives shouldn’t politicize Ted Kennedy’s death. One might think that those warnings should be directed not at Kennedy’s public political opponents, who have all conducted themselves with class, but with his allies in the media. Chris Matthews waited only hours to use the occasion to tinkle down his leg over the anger in town-hall forums prompted by the Barack Obama agenda, and likened it to the assassination of Ted’s older brother John (via Gateway Pundit and Newsbusters):

CHRIS MATTHEWS: You know there’s going to be a lot of talk about the tragic blessings of the Kennedy family, and the curse. And it’s all nonsense. These people were courageous risk takers. Kathleen Kennedy, the girl, the oldest daughter, she was killed with her lover traveling on a plane ride she never should have taken through terrible weather in Europe. Joe Kennedy, Jr. took a mission that nobody should have taken in a plane loaded with dynamite to go blow up the V-1 rocket sites. Jack Kennedy was killed in an open car in Dallas in the midst of the most hated–it’s like the mood we’re in right now.

Well, except for that pesky fact that John Kennedy was assassinated not by some “un-American” conservative angry at government expansion, but by an avowed Communist, as Mark Finkelstein points out at NB.

Lest you think those are isolated incidents, here’s Matthews again, not politicizing Kennedy’s death on the Today show:

MATTHEWS: He wanted to be his brother’s brother, and then he turned that torch over last year to Barack Obama. And the great thing about the Kennedys is that they always grew as a family. They tended to get better as they got older. Some families like the Long family of Louisiana dissipated. This family got better. The Kennedy commitment to civil rights was almost accidental. It began because of history — ’63 and Martin Luther King’s march. By Bobby, it became passion, by Teddy it became real. And then Teddy turns it over to the first African-American and says, “You got the ball.” Amazing history. Barack’s now the last brother.

Will anyone in the media call out Matthews for his shameless Obama shilling? I somehow doubt it.

GE,NBC and CNBC(forget MSNBC) all should be absolutely embarrassed by this bumbling idiot.

Hummer53 on August 26, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Good luck with that. They have no shame, and certainly no ethics.

Del Dolemonte on August 26, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Wow, Mathhews is a raging idiot.

Why do all these Dem presidents want to be a Kennedy? Clinton, now Obama with the whole Martha’s Vineyard thing, Obama even got the same dog as The Swimmer.

Did Obama write letters to the KGB while Bush was in office, too?

Oops…

reaganaut on August 26, 2009 at 6:14 PM

did they ever fly a flag at half mast for Mary Jo??

Ris4victory on August 26, 2009 at 6:22 PM

Really is a shame about Joe, Jr. Not only was he truly brave, but he was the son being groomed for the presidency, and for all we know, he might have had real talent. His experience of the war, like JFK’s, would have made him a hawk on defense. We would have been spared the absurdity of Camelot and the grotesqueness of the feckless Teddy becoming ‘the lion of the Senate.’

rockmom on August 26, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Interestingly, John F. Kennedy confided to some close friends that he didn’t feel he deserved his medals for his WW 2 service.

Del Dolemonte on August 26, 2009 at 6:23 PM

Piereson argues that Liberals lost it because they were never able process the fact that JFK was killed by a Communist and not some Ultra-right/Klansman/Bircher. To this day they still want it to be true.

That’s why Matthews compares Townhall-ers to Lee Harvey Oswald.

Noel on August 26, 2009 at 2:19 PM

Best post of the thread.

Also very similar to the meltdown they had after the 2000 election. It was inconceivable that their boy genius Algore could lose to a simpleton named Chimpy. So they created this myth that Gore had the Presidency “stolen” from him in Florida, while in reality the reason Gore lost was because he was rejected by the voters of his own home state.

Del Dolemonte on August 26, 2009 at 6:29 PM

When are Matthews ratings going to go down enough to get him canned? He is the biggest dipshiat on the air, with the possible exception of Olby.

I’m in that age bracket.

I think a lot of young voters would be conservative if we framed the debate on progressivism vs liberty.

You’ll have to remind me what our message was the last 4 years so I could use that as an example of how not to win younger voters.

Oswald was a commie. Chrissy, your an idiot. Sadly, most people watching you are as well.

Barack is now the last Kennedy brother?

I’m thinking the lily white Kennedy clan isn’t so hot about having a black guy in the house who isn’t a servant.

Bishop on August 26, 2009 at 8:24 PM

Where was that courage the night Mary Jo Kopechne drowned? Or the next day when DrunKennedy failed to report her murder to the authorities?

Jerricho68 on August 26, 2009 at 8:26 PM

Ed: Will anyone in the media call out Matthews for his shameless Obama shilling?

Does it really matter anymore? Chris Matthews could not be any more exposed as a hack. Ownly fawning cult members who think themselves “mainstream” due to their particular echo chamber of debate, only they are attentive to Chris for anything other than entertainment.

I suppose the real concern is this question, is he persuasive? Do any poll numbers move because of this guy? Probably toward the right.

exdeadhead on August 26, 2009 at 8:42 PM

Kennedy’s last brother? Where the hell is that birth certificate?

joedoe on August 26, 2009 at 2:24 PM

Chrissie’s a “birther”? Who knew?

ya2daup on August 26, 2009 at 8:52 PM

Maybe Matthews does belong in the Senate . Where else can you find such arrogant buffonery ?

borntoraisehogs on August 26, 2009 at 9:08 PM

Ted Kennedy, of all the brothers, became the great Senator…”

Some Rambling Liberal Media Nitwit

Well, um, that’s because two of his older brothers rose to higher positions and then were assassinated, and his oldest brother didn’t enter politics, Chris. WTF are you talking about, precisely?

On the other hand, it’s funny that Matthews gaffes his way into acknowledging that Teddy was the idiot of the four (‘of all the brothers’).

Jaibones on August 26, 2009 at 9:14 PM

I’m really sick of him inferring that conservatives are murderous. Seriously f’ing sick of it.

Slander.

MCGIRV on August 26, 2009 at 10:05 PM

Back in the Clinton era this guy was very watchable. MSNBC was watchable. If Matthews hadn’t developed brain rot or career suicide along the way he would have taken Tim Russert’s place. He knows it, and if he gets canned at MSNBC for dismal ratings he’s through completely on any other network (as is David Shuster I believe who’s flitted from Fox to CNN to his home now). So he appeals to the lowest faction of people who might possibly tune into that channel on purpose and not by accident. The TODAY show is bigtime for him.

Marcus on August 26, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Hey, I know Matt and Ann are big lefties, but I have to wonder if they didn’t dissolve into snickers after that piece was wrapping up. I have seen it twice now, and as soon as he calls Barack the “last brother” I start giggling. Not only is it a stupid thing to say, I looked at it the other way. “The Last Brother?” Referencing our first black president? How come that just sounds racist to me?

di butler on August 26, 2009 at 10:18 PM

Ha! Rush Limbaugh said if he had said that, there’d be calls for advertiser boycotts.

Liberals have become pathetic laughing-stocks. You can’t make this stuff up.

redridinghood on August 26, 2009 at 11:26 PM

In A slobbering Love Affair the author, Bernard Goldberg, described Chrissy *the sissy* as “clueless”.

Amen.

He also commented that Keith O. got into Cornell at 16. Where is Ann Coulter when people need her?

Ann?????

IlikedAUH2O on August 26, 2009 at 11:29 PM

No one watches Matthews- his ratings are so low that one could assume that the TV’s connected to his show are all MSNBC’s.

The Cable News Ratings have Chrissie at the bottom, or as Ross Perot would say – “way down there.”

“He wanted to be his brother’s brother.” ROFL…and this guy gets paid for talking.

The Last Brother…sounds like some 70′s blaxploitation flick.

ddrintn on August 27, 2009 at 12:26 AM

Don’t these characters at least have to be comprehensible? What kind of barbrastreisand was this pompous arse trying to sell? This was the language of unfiltered emotionalism; there wasn’t an idea within light years of his talking in tongues.
In observance of form I guess I should make the observation that NBC should be embarrassed.

thegreatbeast on August 27, 2009 at 2:11 AM

Chrissie is protecting Obama like if I protected Ronald Reagan…..after he commited a triple-axe murder.

It’s like that Iraqi minister who was saying the Americans have been defeated while you can see US soldiers in the background.

It’s unbelievable. I’ve never in my life witnessed such madness.

Is he under orders from management (who kidnapped his wife and kids)? I know assuming he is actually married to a woman (hetero) might be going to far given his kneepad-accessoried performance for O-man.

What drives this?

Sapwolf on August 27, 2009 at 3:51 AM

Barack’s now the last brother.

Not likely the last.

notropis on August 27, 2009 at 4:41 AM

There’s one more individual, sort of the liberal lion of the U.S. Senate, and that would be Ted Kennedy. If there’s one issue that Ted Kennedy likes more than any other, it’s taxes. In his mind, he’s the Robin Hood of the U.S. Senate. He’s going to steal from the rich and give to the poor. He talks about tax cuts or bonanzas for the rich and giveaways. He supports the inheritance tax in the name of social justice and says repealing it would benefit millionaires. He believes it’s that simple.

That’s what Ted Kennedy says about taxes. But what is the Kennedy record of actually paying taxes? Ted Kennedy of course is a millionaire. You’d think the inheritance tax would affect him. How has that worked out? The reality is that the Kennedys have set up dozens of trusts around the world to avoid paying the very tax that he says is important to pay in the name of social justice: the inheritance tax. What’s particularly ironic about this is, for a long time, their largest asset was Merchandise Mart, the real estate conglomerate. When they decided to set up a trust, where do they domicile that trust? Anybody want to guess? Was it Massachusetts, their home state? Florida? California? Delaware?

The Kennedys domiciled Merchandize Mart, with more than $600 million, on the Pacific Island nation of Fiji. Has Ted Kennedy ever been to Fiji? I don’t think there’s any record that he has. But they picked Fiji because it avoids IRS scrutiny, the sort that you would get if you domiciled the trust in the United States.

The reality today is that Ted Kennedy receives money from trusts established numerous times, from 1926, 1936, 1978, 1987, and 1997, and those trusts of course are designed to avoid paying the inheritance tax.

What does this actually mean in practical terms? Let me give you the bottom line. Ted Kennedy supports an inheritance tax of 49%. Forty-nine percent of what you have goes to the IRS after you die. Now, what rate did the Kennedys pay? The Kennedys have transferred $300 million, this is all according to their records, they have transferred $300 million from one generation to the other, and out of that, they have paid $132,000 in taxes, which is nowhere near 49%? Actually it’s .004 percent. The Kennedys, like a lot of other people on the left, love the idea of paying taxes for other people. When it comes to themselves, they’re not so interested.

MB4 on August 27, 2009 at 5:07 AM

The Last Brother? Shouldn’t Obama be called “First Brother”, or is that racist?
Chris Matthews is entitled to his opinion, since his isn’t a news program, but an analysis program, but his schoolgirl gushing over and homoerotic references to Obama is embarassing to say the least. Doesn’t anyone at MSNBC have the nerve to tell him to keep it under wraps? Maybe they’re hoping folks will tune in for the comic value of watching him reach down just a little further for his next glowing appraisal of his favorite politician.

Joe Jr. was flying anti-U boat patrols that helped keep the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico “American lakes”, but flying tens of thousand hours without dropping a single depth-charge was not heroic enough for him. the glory hunting moron would have volunteered for anything that would get him a medal.

It was not a high power rifle. The wounds were generated in a freakishly rare manor but entirely consistent with a single shooter.

Slowburn on August 27, 2009 at 7:33 AM

In military terms the Italian 6.5*52mm round is an intermediate battle charge. The Swedish 6.5*55mm is a little more throaty and rated to kill elk. Oswald actually made a good choice for caliber inadvertently because it has a lower recoil than a .30-06 or an 8mm Mauser would have engendered to the rapid suite of shots taken.

The “freakish wounds” are consistent with the intent of the Italians reducing the caliber and weight of the round. The theory when adpoted was similar to what eventually led the US to adopt the 5.56*45mm round as Infantry standard. You want wicked wounding and a higher potential for hydrostatic shock to the circulatory system.

Kennedy would have been in horrid shape even without the headshot because of the risk of a shockwave tearing his heart up.

Oswald is burning in hell….Ted will be able to ask him personally what happened soon.

Correction: Oswald was a Marxist-Socialist & admitted such on that well publicized television show he appeared on. So, not a communist, but a Marxist-Socialist.

Which, of course, means Ted was closer to Oswald’s politics than he was his brother’s.

I find his attempted obfuscation on the matter to be as specious as Ted reasoning he was doing patriotic work collaberating with the KGB in 1981 when his brother was a cold warrior par excellence….

Oswald went to Ivan land to live….

a true Marxist-Socialist would have known better even in the Duranty Potemkin Villaged 50s and 60s.

Yes. The rest of us are lifting the tabs up from the keyboard to clean underneath, using up an entire box of Q-Tips.

I thought I had fortunately avoided many of the spew-inducing comments like this one, but my luck ran out with this jerk.

The last Kennedy brother?

My only solace is that I can once again kid my friend who I warned about Matthews, way back in 2002 when he and some other people actually thought the guy was a journalist.
