Ted Kennedy, 1932-2009
posted at 7:32 am on August 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Ted Kennedy lost his battle with brain cancer last night and died at the age of 77. Kennedy, whose life was marked with tragedies and losses as well as self-inflicted scandals but also with legislative victories and power, had been ill for the last year, and had missed most of the 2009 session of Congress as a result:
Edward M. Kennedy, one of the most powerful and influential senators in American history and one of three brothers whose political triumphs and personal tragedies captivated the nation for decades, died late Tuesday at his home in Hyannis Port, Mass., at age 77. He had been battling brain cancer.
His family announced his death in a brief statement released early Wednesday. “We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,” the statement said. “We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all.” …
Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, was the last male survivor of a privileged and charismatic family that in the 1960s dominated American politics and attracted worldwide attention. His sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics, died two weeks ago, also in Hyannis Port. One sibling, former U.S. ambassador to Ireland Jean Kennedy Smith, is still alive.
As heir through tragedy to his accomplished older brothers — President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.), both of whom were assassinated — Edward Kennedy became the patriarch of his clan and a towering figure in the U.S. Senate to a degree neither of his siblings had been.
That last is a little unfair to John and Robert, who were both assassinated before their parents had died. Had they survived, John and and then Robert would almost certainly have assumed that role. Both deaths were American tragedies, but they were deeply personal tragedies for all of the Kennedys, and Ted had that role thrust upon him to a large extent through two assassins’ bullets.
As Michelle says, we will have plenty of time to analyze Kennedy’s life and work, but today is a day to give comfort to Kennedy’s family. They will be in my prayers.
Update: Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, issued this statement:
“It is with great sadness that Elaine and I note the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, one of the giants of American political life, a longtime Senate colleague, and a friend.
“No one could have known the man without admiring the passion and vigor he poured into a truly momentous life. We send our deepest expressions of sympathy to Vicki, his children, and the entire Kennedy family.”

I am not playing in the democrat double-bind anymore and I am not going to pretend that Tedster was anything other than a murdering scumball….
I am sad he’s gone he was the living embodiement of everything I hate about legacy liberalism and he was an awesome bellweather for what to oppose….
he got away with negligent homicide because he was a Kennedy…
that will be one family line I will not mourn when its candle flickers the last.

Since the Libtards don’t even wait for a conservative to die before they rip into him (Reagan, etc), why should we show any restraint with that manslaughtering bastard Kennedy? At least our comments are factual, whereas theirs are always full of the usual “progressive” (regressive?) lies and canards.
I hope Ted’s really alive and not dead. That way, when he wakes up inside his coffin underground and starts scratching at the lid, he’ll get a taste of what Mary Jo Kopechne went through, desperately trying to escape the flooding Tedmobile.

Don’t worry, Dems. Now that he’s dead I’m sure he’ll be voting in Massachusetts for many years to come.

Of course he did . . . however under Obamacare the rest of us peons in his age group would have received our “end of life counseling” and then left to die. The hypocricy of the left is frightening an disgusting.

The Kennedy Family has been both blessed and cursed. Perhaps those who believe in Karma are correct. I was a young 14 in Catholic school when JFK was elected. I signed up for the reserves as a result of the Cuban missle crisis. I went active regular Marine in as the SE Asian war looked imminent. I supported Goldwater in 64 but was too young to vote. I was a supporter of Bobby Kennedy 1968. He was going to end Johnson’s War. When RFK died I became a Republican and supported Nixon. I still am a republican. That was my rebellion aginnst my family. Through all the years I never particularly liked Ted Kennedy. Camelot was a dream in 1960. It never really materialized. The wolrd was a different place back then. Teddy was a jerk back then. His second wife settled him down in later years. Politically I never understood him. I believe he was sincere in his effort to bring about change for the better. Sure he went about it in way we republicans disagree with but he was honest and never led anyone down the garden path like the younger democrats of today do.
I respect his efforts. I hope he rests in peace. He has a lot to answer for to the creator. I am mature enough to let God judge him. I am not supposed to judge him and I will not. Those of you who disrespect his memory do cause me to pause and reflect how mean spirited some in my political party have become. It is a sad day when someone gloats over the tradedy of another. For those who do that maybe you should ask yourself this question today. WWJD?

We don’t mourn for the dead, we mourn for the living.
Ted Kennedy was somebody’s son, brother, uncle, boss, friend and peer and those people have suffered a loss which deserves our empathy & sympathy, a loss they feel regardless of his legacy as a politician. I pray that God will bring them comfort.
His legacy as a politician neither earns nor is entitled to be re-written simply because he has passed. His allies will lionize his political career, and rightly so, because he was effective to their cause; his opponents will condemn his political career, and rightly so, because of the damage he did.
I won’t miss him being a United States Senator one bit.

Can they change the law now and go ahead with an appointment? It would seem to me that Kennedy’s death stopped the clock on that effort since, now, it would be changing the rules in the middle of the law that says a special election is required.

I want to apologize for my earlier comments in this thread. I do so not to take back any of the convictions I’ve held about this man for so many years (and to which I’ve been a witness), but I do so because it is the Christian thing to do. I am a Christian and a Catholic — and I am admittedly waaaaaaaay imperfect… my earlier outburst was a window into my own shortcomings.
It’s not up to me to declare the fate of Ted Kennedy’s soul — that’s the job of Almighty God. God and His Mercy are beyond our comprehension, and what a wonderful thing it would be if God’s Mercy could surround Ted Kennedy at this very moment. I can’t imagine that, given my feelings for the man, but I can hope for it because it bodes well for all of God’s children.
I apologize to Michelle, Ed, Allah and any other posters here if my earlier comments offended them.

Among the many despicable things Ted Kennedy did during his life, I’m spenidng this morning thinking about his appearance at the Democrat National Convention last summer.
Before that evening, my elderly Democrat mother wouldn’t have spit on Obama if he were on fire. Nor would have my in-laws. But there was something about the ailing Ted Kennedy appearing at the convention and urging people to vote for the next chapter of American greatness that hooked in the suspicious elderly Democrats.
I blame Ted Kennedy the most for putting Obama in the White House.

Fact of the matter is that he spent 47 years as a US Senator and didn’t do a whole hell of a lot else. It is a perfect time for criticism and analysis.

Brain cancer? The tumor probably starved.
And now the coverage is going to be unbearable. They have been preparing his grave for a while with this lion nonsense, figuring if they repeat something long enough people will actually buy it. The guy wasn’t a lion, unless the lion is the most overrated animal in the jungle, really a mental midget and a demagogue, then in that case I would agree.

Condolences to the Kennedy family. Though I’m not sure whether that’s any more appropriate now that he’s dead, than it was while he was still alive.

I am greatly consoled that Teddy must have known, well before he died, that this abortion of a health care bill was not able to be rammed, even through the House, in his lifetime.
With water being such a symbolic touchstone in Kennedy’s life, it seems most appropriate that he knew this bill was drowning in criticism and tanking in a huge way.

It’s also an example of how dangerous superficial personality cults are. Teddy really accomplished nothing, but since his brothers got shot, he inherited some of their personality worship, he benefited greatly off of the accomplishments of others and rarely his own, which really made his policies no surprise.

I don’t know if the Memorial Health Care is going to work that well. Ted Kennedy had the best health care on the planet. The health care bill as it stands now denies that kind of health care to most citizens. In fact, poor Ted should have been offered the glass of hemlock last year. Just because he wasn’t and chose to fight is exactly what we are all fighting for. This hasn’t changed our fight at all. In fact, I think it has been strengthend. None of our Congress critters can say that they want to give up their plans for the one they want to force on us. The argument hasn’t changed.

Ted Kennedy not only killed a woman, he cheated people out of their mineral and other natural resources by leasing their land and then refusing to pay the lease fees. The victims were compelled to sue.
Kennedy worked slavishly to bring socialism to the United States.

OK, let me state that death is rarely a good thing. It’s a shame the man never came to see a whole lot of truth in 77 years. I will also note that his family must be going through a difficult time as death of a loved-one is traumatic and my heart goes out to them.
But the man was a murderer… and he worked tirelessly to destroy this nation… and he has the blood of millions in SE Asia on his hands for abandoning our friends there in the early and mid 1970s. So, while I don’t exactly rejoice in his death, I’m not going to lionize him and pretend that he wasn’t a horrifically destructive man just because he is no longer alive.
As for WWJD? Well He did everything he could for Ted… but Ted never bothered to care.
Having titles was never of concern to the Lord and I don’t care what titles he had (appointed and elected, never earned, btw) either… as a man and as an American he failed miserably. Without the title (or name) he’d just be a drunk, womanizing, self-centered, betraying, traitorous murderer.
